Abstract
Ion-specific effects on aqueous solvation of monovalent counter ions, Na+ ${^+ }$ , K+ ${^+ }$ , Cl- ${^- }$ , and Br- ${^- }$ , and two model polyelectrolytes (PEs), poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDADMA) were here studied with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the OPLS-aa force-field which is an empirical fixed point-charge force-field. Ion-specific binding to the PE charge groups was also characterized. Both computational methods predict similar response for the solvation of the PEs but differ notably in description of ion solvation. Notably, AIMD captures the experimentally observed differences in Cl- ${^- }$ and Br- ${^- }$ anion solvation and binding with the PEs, while the classical MD simulations fail to differentiate the ion species response. Furthermore, the findings show that combining AIMD with the computationally less costly classical MD simulations allows benefiting from both the increased accuracy and statistics reach.

Abstract
The hydration structure of No2+, the divalent cation of nobelium in water, was investigated by ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. First, a series of benchmark calculations were performed to validate the density functional theory (DFT) calculation methods for a molecule containing a No atom. The DFT-MD simulation of the hydration structure of No2+ was conducted after the MD method was validated by simulating the hydration structures of Ca2+ and Sr2+, whose behavior was previously reported to be similar to that of No2+. The model cluster containing M2+ (M = Ca, Sr, or No) and 32 water molecules was used for DFT-MD simulation. The results showed that the hydration distance of No2+ was intermediate between those of Ca2+ and Sr2+. This trend in the hydration distance is in good agreement with the elution position trend obtained in a previous radiochemical experiment. The calculated No-O bond lengths in the optimized structure of [No(H2O)8]2+ was 2.59 Å, while the average No-O bond length of [No(H2O)8]2+ in water by DFT-MD was 2.55 Å. This difference implies the importance of dynamic solvent effects, considering the second (and further) coordination sphere in the theoretical calculation of solution chemistry for superheavy elements.

Abstract
A novel model of hydration for the chloride and iodide ions in water is proposed, which overcomes the limitations of conventional radial models. A new approach, based on a representation of the halide lone pairs, highlighted a subset of first shell water molecules featuring preferential strong interactions with the ion lone pairs, giving rise to tetrahedral hydration structures in both Cl- and I- aqueous solutions. By adopting a novel descriptor correlated to the halide-water interaction energy, we were able to split the conventional first solvation shell into a tight first hydration shell, composed of water molecules strongly interacting with the ions via hydrogen bonds, and a loose first shell containing molecules that are only slightly perturbed by the halide electrostatic charge. The picture emerging from our findings indicates that lone pairs play an important role in the description of systems where hydrogen bonds are the main interactions taking place in the solvation process.

Abstract
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful experimental tool to probe the local structure in materials with the core hole excitations. Here, the oxygen K-edge XAS spectra of the NaCl solution and pure water are computed by using a recently developed GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, based on configurations modeled by path-integral molecular dynamics with the deep-learning technique. The neural network is trained on ab initio data obtained with strongly constrained and appropriately normed density functional theory. The observed changes in the XAS features of the NaCl solution, compared to those of pure water, are in good agreement between experimental and theoretical results. We provided detailed explanations for these spectral changes that occur when NaCl is solvated in pure water. Specifically, the presence of solvating ion pairs leads to localization of electron-hole excitons. Our theoretical XAS results support the theory that the effects of the solvating ions on the H-bond network are mainly confined within the first hydration shell of ions, however beyond the shell the arrangement of water molecules remains to be comparable to that observed in pure water.

Abstract
Electron transfer reactions can be strongly influenced by solvent dynamics. We study the photoionization of halides in water as a model system for such reactions. There are no internal nuclear degrees of freedom in the solute, allowing the dynamics of the solvent to be uniquely identified. We simulate the equilibrium solvent dynamics for Cl-, Br-, I-, and their respective neutral atoms in water, comparing quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) methods. On the basis of the obtained configurations, we calculate the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra rigorously based on the MD snapshots and compare them in detail with other theoretical and experimental results available in the literature. We find our EXAFS spectra based on QM/MM MD simulations in good agreement with their experimental counterparts for the ions. Classical MD simulations for the ions lead to EXAFS spectra that agree equally well with the experiment when it comes to the oscillatory period of the signal, even though they differ from the QM/MM radial distribution functions extracted from the MD. The amplitude is, however, considerably overestimated. This suggests that to judge the reliability of theoretical simulation methods or to elucidate fine details of the atomistic dynamics of the solvent based on EXAFS spectra, the amplitude as well as the oscillatory period need to be considered. If simulations fail qualitatively, as does the classical MD for the aqueous neutral halogen atoms, the resulting EXAFS will also be strongly affected in both oscillatory period and amplitude. The good reliability of QM/MM-based EXAFS simulations, together with clear qualitative differences in the EXAFS spectra found between halides and their atomic counterparts, suggests that a combined theory and experimental EXAFS approach is suitable for elucidating the nonequilibrium solvent dynamics in the photoionization of halides and possibly also for electron transfer reactions in more complex systems.

Abstract
In this work, we discuss the use of scaled charges when developing force fields for NaCl in water. We shall develop force fields for Na+ and Cl- using the following values for the scaled charge (in electron units): ±0.75, ±0.80, ±0.85, and ±0.92 along with the TIP4P/2005 model of water (for which previous force fields were proposed for q = ±0.85 and q = ±1). The properties considered in this work are densities, structural properties, transport properties, surface tension, freezing point depression, and maximum in density. All the developed models were able to describe quite well the experimental values of the densities. Structural properties were well described by models with charges equal to or larger than ±0.85, surface tension by the charge ±0.92, maximum in density by the charge ±0.85, and transport properties by the charge ±0.75. The use of a scaled charge of ±0.75 is able to reproduce with high accuracy the viscosities and diffusion coefficients of NaCl solutions for the first time. We have also considered the case of KCl in water, and the results obtained were fully consistent with those of NaCl. There is no value of the scaled charge able to reproduce all the properties considered in this work. Although certainly scaled charges are not the final word in the development of force fields for electrolytes in water, its use may have some practical advantages. Certain values of the scaled charge could be the best option when the interest is to describe certain experimental properties.

Abstract
Understanding multi-component transport behavior through hydrated dense membranes is of interest for numerous applications. For the particular case of photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction cells, it is important to understand the multi-component transport behavior of CO2 electrochemical reduction products including mobile formate, acetate and ethanol in the ion exchange membranes as one role of the membrane in these devices is to minimize the permeation of these products. Anion exchange membranes (AEM) have been employed in these and other electrochemical devices as they act to facilitate the transport of common electrolytes (i.e., bicarbonates). However, as they act to facilitate the transport of carboxylates as well, thereby reducing the overall performance, the design of new AEMs is necessary to improve device performance through the selective transport of the desired ion(s) or electrolyte(s). Here, we investigate the transport behavior of formate and acetate and their co-transport with ethanol in two types of AEMs: (1) a crosslinked AEM prepared by free-radical copolymerization of a monomer with a quaternary ammonium (QA) group and a crosslinker, and (2) Selemion® AMVN. We observe a decrease in diffusivities to carboxylates in co-diffusion. We attribute this behavior to charge screening by the co-diffusing alcohol, which reduces the electrostatic attraction between QAs and carboxylates.

Abstract
Most classical nonpolarizable ion potential models underestimate the solubility values of NaCl and KCl in water significantly. We determine Lennard-Jones parameters of Na+, K+, and Cl- that reproduce the solubility as well as the hydration free energy in dilute aqueous solutions for three water potential models, SPC/E, TIP3P, and TIP4P/2005. The ion-oxygen distance in the solution and the cation-anion distance in salt are also considered in the parametrization. In addition to the target properties, the hydration enthalpy, hydration entropy, self-diffusion coefficient, coordination number, lattice energy, enthalpy of solution, density, viscosity, and number of contact ion pairs are calculated for comparison with 17 frequently used or recently developed ion potential models. The overall performance of each ion model is represented by a global score using a scheme that was originally developed for comparison of water potential models. The global score is better for our models than for the other 17 models not only because of the quite good prediction for the solubility but also because of the relatively small deviation from the experimental value for many of the other properties.

Abstract
Three-dimensional models for the aqueous solvation structures of chloride, bromide, and iodide are reported. K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and Minuit X-ray absorption near edge (MXAN) analyses found well-defined single shell solvation spheres for bromide and iodide. However, dissolved chloride proved structurally distinct, with two solvation shells needed to explain its strikingly different X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectrum. Final solvation models were as follows: iodide, 8 water molecules at 3.60 ± 0.13 Å and bromide, 8 water molecules at 3.40 ± 0.14 Å, while chloride solvation included 7 water molecules at 3.15 ± 0.10 Å, and a second shell of 7 water molecules at 4.14 ± 0.30 Å. Each of the three derived solvation shells is approximately uniformly disposed about the halides, with no global asymmetry. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations simulating the chloride XANES spectra following from alternative solvation spheres revealed surprising sensitivity of the electronic state to 6-, 7-, or 8-coordination, implying a strongly bounded phase space for the correct structure during an MXAN fit. MXAN analysis further showed that the asymmetric solvation predicted from molecular dynamics simulations using halide polarization can play no significant part in bulk solvation. Classical molecular dynamics used to explore chloride solvation found a 7-water solvation shell at 3.12 (-0.04/+0.3) Å, supporting the experimental result. These experiments provide the first fully three-dimensional structures presenting to atomic resolution the aqueous solvation spheres of the larger halide ions.

Abstract
Herein, Ca K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is developed as a means to characterize the local environment of calcium centers. The spectra for six, seven, and eight coordinate inorganic and molecular calcium complexes were analyzed and determined to be primarily influenced by the coordination environment and site symmetry at the calcium center. The experimental results are closely correlated to time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations of the XAS spectra. The applicability of this methodology to complex systems was investigated using structural mimics of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of PSII. It was found that Ca K-edge XAS is a sensitive probe for structural changes occurring in the cubane heterometallic cluster due to Mn oxidation. Future applications to the OEC are discussed.

Abstract
About 35 years after its first suggestion, QM/MM became the standard theoretical approach to investigate enzymatic structures and processes. The success is due to the ability of QM/MM to provide an accurate atomistic picture of enzymes and related processes. This picture can even be turned into a movie if nuclei-dynamics is taken into account to describe enzymatic processes. In the field of organic chemistry, QM/MM methods are used to a much lesser extent although almost all relevant processes happen in condensed matter or are influenced by complicated interactions between substrate and catalyst. There is less importance for theoretical organic chemistry since the influence of nonpolar solvents is rather weak and the effect of polar solvents can often be accurately described by continuum approaches. Catalytic processes (homogeneous and heterogeneous) can often be reduced to truncated model systems, which are so small that pure quantum-mechanical approaches can be employed. However, since QM/MM becomes more and more efficient due to the success in software and hardware developments, it is more and more used in theoretical organic chemistry to study effects which result from the molecular nature of the environment. It is shown by many examples discussed in this review that the influence can be tremendous, even for nonpolar reactions. The importance of environmental effects in theoretical spectroscopy was already known. Due to its benefits, QM/MM can be expected to experience ongoing growth for the next decade. In the present chapter we give an overview of QM/MM developments and their importance in theoretical organic chemistry, and review applications which give impressions of the possibilities and the importance of the relevant effects. Since there is already a bunch of excellent reviews dealing with QM/MM, we will discuss fundamental ingredients and developments of QM/MM very briefly with a focus on very recent progress. For the applications we follow a similar strategy.

Abstract
Herein, we report on the structure and dynamics of the aqueous Ca(2+) system studied by using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. Our detailed study revealed the formation of well-formed hydration shells with characteristics that were significantly different to those of bulk water. To facilitate a robust comparison with state-of-the-art X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) data, we employ a 1st principles MD-XAFS procedure and directly compare simulated and experimental XAFS spectra. A comparison of the data for the aqueous Ca(2+) system with those of the recently reported Zn(2+), Fe(3+), and Al(3+) species showed that many of their structural characteristics correlated well with charge density on the cation. Some very important exceptions were found, which indicated a strong sensitivity of the solvent structure towards the cation's valence electronic structure. Average dipole moments for the 2nd shell of all cations were suppressed relative to bulk water.
