Synthesis, X-ray Studies and Photophysical Properties of Iridium(III) Complexes Incorporating Functionalized 2,2':6',2″ Terpyridines and 2,6-Bis(thiazol-2-yl)pyridines

A series of iridium(III) triimine complexes incorporating 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (terpy) and 2,6-bis(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine (dtpy) derivatives were successfully designed and synthesized to investigate the impact of the peripheral rings (pyridine, thiazole) and substituents (thiophene, bithiophene, EDOT) attached to the triimine skeleton on their photophysical properties. The Ir(III) complexes were fully characterized using IR, 1H, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray analysis. Their thermal properties were evaluated using TGA measurements. Photoluminescence spectra of [IrCl3L1-6] were investigated in solution at 298 and 77 K. The experimental studies were accompanied by DFT/TDDFT calculations. The photophysical properties of the synthesized triimine ligands and Ir(III) complexes were studied in detail by electronic absorption and emission. In solution, they exhibited photoluminescence quantum yields ranging from 1.27% to 5.30% depending on the chemical structure. The experimental research included DFT/TDDFT calculations. The photophysical properties of the synthesized triimine ligands and Ir(III) complexes were conducted using electronic absorption and emission techniques. Mononuclear Rare-Earth Metalloligands Exploiting a Divergent Ligand

Rare-earth tris-diketonato [RE(dike)3pyterpy] metalloligands can be prepared reacting at room temperature [RE(dike)3dme] (dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane; dike = tta with Htta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone and RE = La, 1; Y, 2; Eu, 3; Dy, 4; or dike = hfac with Hhfac hexafluoroacetylacetone, and RE = Eu, 5; Tb, 6; Yb 7) with 4'-(4‴-pyridil)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (pyterpy). The molecular structures of 1, 5, 6, and 7 have been studied through single-crystal X-ray diffraction showing mononuclear neutral complexes with the rare-earth ion in coordination number nine and with a muffin-like coordination geometry. [RE(tta)3pyterpy] promptly reacts with [M(tta)2dme] with formation of [Mpyterpy2][RE(tta)4]2 (M = Zn, RE = Y, 8; M = Co, RE = Dy, 9). Consistently, [Zn(hfac)2dme] reacts at room temperature with 2 equiv of pyterpy yielding [Znpyterpy2][hfac]2 10 that easily can be transformed by reaction with 2 equiv of [Eu(hfac)3] in [Znpyterpy2][Eu(hfac)4]2 11 that has been structurally characterized. Finally, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 metalloligands react at room temperature in few minutes with [PtCl(μ-Cl)PPh3]2 yielding the heterometallic molecular complexes [RE(dike)3pyterpyPtCl2PPh3] (dike = tta, RE = La, 12; Y, 13; Eu; 14; dike = hfac, RE = Eu, 15; Yb, 16).

Dynamic Interfaces in Self-Healable Polymers

It is well-established that interfaces play critical roles in biological and synthetic processes. Aside from significant practical applications, the most accessible and measurable quantity is interfacial tension, which represents a measure of the energy required to create or rejoin two surfaces. Owing to the fact that interfacial processes are critical in polymeric materials, this review outlines recent advances in dynamic interfacial processes involving physics and chemistry targeting self-healing. Entropic interfacial energies stored during damage participate in the recovery, and self-healing depends upon copolymer composition and monomer sequence, monomer molar ratios, molecular weight, and polymer dispersity. These properties ultimately impact chain flexibility, shape-memory recovery, and interfacial interactions. Self-healing is a localized process with global implications on mechanical and other properties. Selected examples driven by interfacial flow and shape memory effects are discussed in the context of covalent and supramolecular rebonding targeting self-healable materials development.

Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Organometallic BODIPY-Ru(II) Dyads: Redox and Photophysical Properties with Singlet Oxygen Generation Capability†

A series of Ru(II)-acetylide complexes (Ru1, Ru2, and Ru1m) with alkynyl-functionalized borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) conjugates were designed by varying the position of the linker that connects the BODIPY unit to the Ru(II) metal center through acetylide linkage at either the 2-(Ru1) and 2,6-(Ru2) or the meso-phenyl (Ru1m) position of the BODIPY scaffold. The Ru(II) organometallic complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, CHN, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analyses. The Ru(II)-BODIPY conjugates exhibit fascinating electrochemical and photophysical properties. All BODIPY-Ru(II) complexes exhibit strong absorption (εmax = 29,000-72,000 M-1 cm-1) in the visible region (λmax = 502-709 nm). Fluorescence is almost quenched for Ru1 and Ru2, whereas Ru1m shows the residual fluorescence of the corresponding BODIPY core at 517 nm. The application of the BODIPY-Ru(II) dyads as nonporphyrin-based triplet photosensitizers was explored by a method involving the singlet oxygen (1O2)-mediated photo-oxidation of diphenylisobenzofuran. Effective π-conjugation between the BODIPY chromophore and Ru(II) center in the case of Ru1 and Ru2 was found to be necessary to improve intersystem crossing (ISC) and hence the 1O2-sensitizing ability. In addition, electrochemical studies indicate electronic interplay between the metal center and the redox-active BODIPY in the BODIPY-Ru(II) dyads.

Polarity-Induced Morphological Transformation with Tunable Optical Output of Terpyridine-Phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-Based Ligand and Its Zn(II) Complexes with I-V Characteristics

Self-assembled nanostructures obtained from various functional π-conjugated organic molecules have been able to draw substantial interest due to their inherent optical properties, which are imperative for developing optoelectronic devices, multiple-color-emitting devices with color-tunable displays, and optical sensors. These π-conjugated molecules have proven their potential employment in various organic electronic applications. Therefore, the stimuli-responsive fabrication of these π-conjugated systems into a well-ordered assembly is extremely crucial to tuning their inherent optical properties for improved performance in organic electronic applications. To this end, herein, we have designed and synthesized a functional π-conjugated molecule (TP) having phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole with terpyridine substitution at the 2 position and its corresponding metal complexes (TPZn and (TP)2Zn). By varying the polarity of the self-assembly medium, TP, TPZn, and (TP)2Zn are fabricated into well-ordered superstructures with morphological individualities. However, this medium polarity-induced self-assembly can tune the inherent optical properties of TP, TPZn, and (TP)2Zn and generate multiple fluorescence colors. Particularly, this property makes them useful for organic electronic applications, which require adjustable luminescence output. More importantly, in 10% aqueous-THF medium, TPZn exhibited H-type aggregation-induced white light emission and behaved as a single-component white light emitter. The experimentally obtained results of the solvent polarity-induced variation in optical properties as well as self-assembly patterns were further confirmed by theoretical investigation using density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, we investigated the I-V characteristics, both vertical and horizontal, using ITO and glass surfaces coated with TP, TPZn, and (TP)2Zn, respectively, and displayed maximum current density for the TPZn-coated surface with the order of measured current density TPZn > TP > (TP)2Zn. This observed order of current density measurements was also supported by a direct band gap calculation associated with the frontier molecular orbitals using the Tauc plot. Hence, solvent polarity-induced self-assembly behavior with adjustable luminescence output and superior I-V characteristics of TPZn make it an exceptional candidate for organic electronic applications and electronic device fabrication.

Preparation of spiroborate supramolecular and peapod polymers containing a photoluminescent ruthenium(ii) complex

The immobilization of functional metal complexes onto polymer supports remains one of the most important research areas. In this study, we prepared spiroborate supramolecular and peapod polymers containing a cationic photoluminescent ruthenium(ii) complex. The supramolecular polymer was obtained by mixing spiroborate cyclic trimer bearing homoallyl group and a ruthenium(ii) tris(bipyridyl) complex, and was further converted into the corresponding peapod polymer by olefin metathesis polymerization. The structure of these polymers was determined by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analyses, and atomic force microscopy. The absorption and emission behaviors of the ruthenium(ii) complex were almost the same for the free form and the supramolecular polymer in the mixed solvent of N,N-dimethylformamide and chloroform, although the emission intensity decreased when the chloroform portion was increased. On the other hand, the hypsochromism was observed upon the emission of the ruthenium(ii) complex in the peapod polymer, probably due to the rigidochromic effect of the tight encapsulation by the peapod structure.

Novel fluorescent probe for sequential recognition of Zn2+ and pyrophosphate in aqueous based on aggregation-induced emission

A new fluorescent probe (E)-4-(4-([2,2':6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)styryl)-1-dodecylpyridin-1-ium (TPy-SD), with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property in aqueous solution, has been synthesized and characterized. The new probe, TPy-SD exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Zn²⁺ with a relatively low detection limit (1.76 × 10^-7 M). The addition of Zn²⁺ is thought to disrupt the AIE property of TPy-SD, thereby leading to a fluorescence blue shift. Interestingly, the complex of probe TPy-SD with Zn²⁺ (Zn (II) TPy-SD), with molar ratio of 1:1, can be used as a simple, sensitive, and rapid means for the detection of pyrophosphates (PPi) in solution (water/DMSO = 99:1). As evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescence emission spectroscopy, this detection is thought to be due to the strong affinity between PPi and Zn²⁺, which brings out Zn²⁺ from the coordination cavity of chemical sensor TPy-SD, thus realizing the detection and recognition of PPi. Therefore, the new AIE fluorescent probe can be used as a dual probe for the detection of cations and anions.

Field-Induced Single-Ion Magnet Behavior in Nickel(II) Complexes with Functionalized 2,2':6'-2″-Terpyridine Derivatives: Preparation and Magneto-Structural Study

Two mononuclear nickel(II) complexes of the formula [Ni(terpyCOOH)₂](ClO₄)₂∙4H₂O (1) and [Ni(terpyepy)₂](ClO₄)₂ MeOH (2) [terpyCOOH = 4'-carboxyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine and terpyepy = 4'-[(2-pyridin-4-yl)ethynyl]-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine] have been prepared and their structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are mononuclear compounds, where the nickel(II) ions are six-coordinate by the six nitrogen atoms from two tridentate terpy moieties. The mean values of the equatorial Ni-N bond distances [2.11(1) and 2.12(1) Å for Ni(1) at 1 and 2, respectively, are somewhat longer than the axial ones [2.008(6) and 2.003(6) Å (1)/2.000(1) and 1.999(1) Å (2)]. The values of the shortest intermolecular nickel-nickel separation are 9.422(1) (1) and 8.901(1) Å (2). Variable-temperature (1.9-200 K) direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 reveal a Curie law behavior in the high-temperature range, which corresponds to magnetically isolated spin triplets, the downturn of the χ_MT product at lower temperatures being due to zero-field splitting effects (D). Values of D equal to -6.0 (1) and -4.7 cm^-1 (2) were obtained through the joint analysis of the magnetic susceptibility data and the field dependence of the magnetization. These results from magnetometry were supported by theoretical calculations. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 and 2 in the temperature range 2.0-5.5 K show the occurrence of incipient out-phase signals under applied dc fields, a phenomenon that is characteristic of field-induced Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior, which herein concerns the 2 mononuclear nickel(II) complexes. This slow relaxation of the magnetization in 1 and 2 has its origin in the axial compression of the octahedral surrounding at their nickel(II) ions that leads to negative values of D. A combination of an Orbach and a direct mechanism accounts for the field-dependent relation phenomena in 1 and 2.

Hourglass-Shaped Nanocages with Concaved Structures Based on Selective Self-Complementary Coordination Ligands and Tunable Hierarchical Self-Assembly

Three-dimensional (3D) structures constructed via coordination-driven self-assemblies have recently garnered increasing attention due to the challenges in structural design and potential applications. In particular, developing new strategy for the convenient and precise self-assemblies of 3D supramolecular structures is of utmost interest. Introducing the concept of self-coordination ligands, herein the design and synthesis of two meta-modified terpyridyl ligands with selective self-complementary coordination moiety are reported and their capability to assemble into two hourglass-shaped nanocages SA and SB is demonstrated. Within these 3D structures, the meta-modified terpyridyl unit preferably coordinates with itself to serve as concave part. By changing the arm length of the ligands, hexamer (SA) and tetramer (SB) are obtained respectively. In-depth studies on the assembly mechanism of SA and SB indicate that the dimers could be formed first via self-complementary coordination and play crucial roles in controlling the final structures. Moreover, both SA and SB can go through hierarchical self-assemblies in solution as well as on solid-liquid interface, which are characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It is further demonstrated that various higher-order assembly structures can be achieved by tuning the environmental conditions.

New Self-Healing Metallosupramolecular Copolymers with a Complex of Cobalt Acrylate and 4′-Phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine

Currently, the chemistry of self-healing polymers is aimed not only at obtaining materials with high self-healing efficiency, but also at improving their mechanical performance. This paper reports on a successful attempt to obtain self-healing copolymers films of acrylic acid, acrylamide and a new metal-containing complex of cobalt acrylate with a 4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine ligand. Samples of the formed copolymer films were characterized by ATR/FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, DSC and TGA, SAXS, WAXS and XRD studies. The incorporation of the metal-containing complex directly into the polymer chain results in an excellent tensile strength (122 MPa) and modulus of elasticity (4.3 GPa) of the obtained films. The resulting copolymers demonstrated self-healing properties both at acidic pH (assisted by HCl healing) with effective preservation of mechanical properties, and autonomously in a humid atmosphere at room temperature without the use of initiators. At the same time, with a decrease in the content of acrylamide, a decrease in the reducing properties was observed, possibly due to an insufficient amount of amide groups to form hydrogen bonds through the interface with terminal carboxyl groups, as well as a decrease in the stability of complexes in samples with a high content of acrylic acid.

Substituents make a difference: 6,6″-modified terpyridine complexes with helix configuration and enhanced emission

A series of complexes L22-M (L2: 6,6″-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine, M: Mn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺) were synthesized by coordinating p-methoxyphenyl 6,6″-substituted terpyridine ligand with first-row transition metal ions and characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, and X-ray single crystal diffraction techniques. Single-crystal structures demonstrated that the steric hindrance of p-methoxyphenyl substituents endowed complexes L22-M with obvious longer coordination bond lengths and larger bond angles and dihedral angles compared with unmodified L12-M (L1: 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine). The chiral helix geometry was observed for L22-M, in which 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine moiety dramatically twisted to a spiral form in comparison to the nearly coplanar structure of the parent L12-M, resulting in plentiful intramolecular and intermolecular π-π interactions. Also, the appealing racemic (P and M) double helix packed structure for 6,6″-modified bisterpyridine complex L22-Cu was formed in the crystal. The consequent appealing charge transfer (CT) emission for L22-Zn in the solution and solid were investigated via UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. This work afforded a new method to achieve intriguing chiral geometry and CT optical properties via the subtle design and modification of terpyridine ligands.

Novel Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers with 1-Thioxophosphole Main-Chain Units and Remarkable Photoinduced Changes in Their Resonance Raman Spectra

New low-bandgap unimers, with the central thiophene-(1-thioxophosphole)-thiophene (TPT) ring sequence and 2,2':6',2″-terpyridin-4'-yl (tpy) end groups connected to the central unit via conjugated linkers of different size, are prepared and assembled with Zn(II) and Fe(II) ions to metallo-supramolecular polymers (MSPs) that are studied regarding their properties. The most interesting feature of Zn-MSPs is the luminescence extended deep into the NIR region. Fe-MSPs not only show the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) manifested by the MLCT band (an expected feature) but also an as-yet-undescribed remarkable phenomenon: specific damping of the bands of the TPT sequence in the resonance Raman spectra taken from solid Fe-MSPs using the excitation to the MLCT band (532 nm). The damping is highly reversible at the low laser power of 0.1 mW but gradually becomes irreversible as the power reaches ca. 5 mW. The revealed phenomenon is not shown by the same Fe-MSPs in solutions, nor by Fe-MSPs containing no phosphole units. A hypothesis is proposed that explains this phenomenon and its dependence on the irradiation intensity as a result of the interplay of three factors: (i) enhancement of the MLCT process by excitation radiation, (ii) the electron-acceptor character of the 1-thioxophosphole ring, and (iii) morphological changes of the lattice and their dependence on the population of new structures in the lattice.

Photoinduced Processes in Rhenium(I) Terpyridine Complexes Bearing Remote Amine Groups: New Insights from Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Photophysical properties of two Re(I) complexes [ReCl(CO)3(R-C6H4-terpy-κ2N)] with remote amine groups, N-methyl-piperazinyl (1) and (2-cyanoethyl)methylamine (2), were investigated. The complexes show strong absorption in the visible region corresponding to metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) and intraligand-charge-transfer (1ILCT) transitions. The energy levels of 3MLCT and 3ILCT excited-states, and thus photoluminescence properties of 1 and 2, were found to be strongly affected by the solvent polarity. Compared to the parent chromophore [ReCl(CO)3(C6H5-terpy-κ2N)] (3), both designed complexes show significantly prolonged (by 1–2 orders of magnitude) phosphorescence lifetimes in acetonitrile and dimethylformamide, contrary to their lifetimes in less polar chloroform and tetrahydrofuran, which are comparable to those for 3. The femtosecond transient absorption (fsTA) measurements confirmed the interconversion between the 3MLCT and 3ILCT excited-states in polar solvents. In contrast, the emissive state of 1 and 2 in less polar environments is of predominant 3MLCT nature.

Push-Pull Effect of Terpyridine Substituted by Triphenylamine Motive—Impact of Viscosity, Polarity and Protonation on Molecular Optical Properties

The introduction of an electron-donating triphenylamine motive into a 2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (terpy) moiety, a cornerstone molecular unit in coordination chemistry, opens new ways for a rational design of photophysical properties of organic and inorganic compounds. A push-pull compound, 4′-(4-(di(4-tert-butylphenyl)amine)phenyl)-2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (tBuTPAterpy), was thoroughly investigated with the use of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that solvent parameters have an enormous influence on the optical properties of this molecule, acting as knobs for external control of its photophysics. The Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) process introduces a remarkable solvent polarity effect on the emission spectra without affecting the lowest absorption band, as confirmed by DFT simulations, including solvation effects. The calculations ascribe the lowest absorption transitions to two singlet ICT excited states, S₁ and S₂, with S₁ having several orders of magnitude higher oscillator strength than the “dark” S₂ state. Temperature and viscosity investigations suggest the existence of two emitting excited states with different structural conformations. The phosphorescence emission band observed at 77 K is assigned to a localized ³terpy state. Finally, protonation studies show that tBuTPAterpy undergoes a reversible process, making it a promising probe of the pH level in the context of acidity determination.

A Supramolecular Hydrogel Based on Copolymers of Acrylic Acid and Maleic Anhydride Derivatives with Terpyridine Motifs

A kind of terpyridine derivative (NH₂-Tpy) in which the amino was incorporated by a short alkyl chain was synthesized. Through grafting of terpyridine units into the hydrophilic copolymers of maleic anhydride and acrylic acid PAAMa via the reaction of the amino groups in NH₂-Tpy and the maleic anhydride units, a series of gelator polymers—P1, P2, and P3—containing different contents of terpyridine units was synthesized. Under coordination of Ni²⁺ and terpyridine ligands in linear polymers, the supramolecular hydrogels H1, H2, and H3 with different cross-linking degrees were prepared. The linear polymers P1–P3 had a strong absorption peak at about 290 nm in the UV-vis spectra which was attributed to π–π* transition, and there was a new peak at about 335 nm led by the metal-to-ligands charge transfer (MLCT) when coordinated with Ni²⁺ ions. According to the rheological behaviors, the storage modulus (G′) was larger than the loss modulus (G′′). These hydrogels showed typical gel-like characteristics when the terpyridine content of the hydrogels exceeded 10%, and the hydrogels showed liquid-like characteristics when the terpyridine content of the hydrogels was less than 7%. The results of the micromorphological investigation of the xerogels from SEM illustrated the metal–terpyridine coordination cross-linking could have an important influence on the microstructures of the resulting hydrogels. Furthermore, these hydrogels based on supramolecular cross-links exhibited reversible solution–gel transition at different environmental temperatures. At the same time, the equilibrium swelling of the supramolecular hydrogels was 8.0–12.3 g/g, which increased with the decrease in the content of the terpyridine units in the resulting hydrogels.

Design and Self-Assembly of Macrocycles with Metals at the Corners Based on Dissymmetric Terpyridine Ligands

Terpyridine-based discrete supramolecular architectures with metal ions in the corners have rarely been reported. Herein, we report two dissymmetric terpyridyl ligands LA and LB decorated at the 5-position and 4-position of terpyridine respectively. The complexes constructed by the self-assembly of LA and LB with Zn(II) exhibit hand-circle-like structures. Moreover, all Zn(II) are successfully fixed in the corners. A series of dimeric to hexameric macrocycles is obtained by head-to-tail connections with changing concentration. This work will pave the way for preparation of more elaborate self-assembled structures based on dissymetric ligands.

Stars and stripes: hexatopic tris(3,2':6',3''-terpyridine) ligands that unexpectedly form one-dimensional coordination polymers

The hexatopic ligands 1,3,5-tris(4,2':6',4''-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (1), 1,3,5-tris(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (2), 1,3,5-tris{4-(4,2':6',4''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (3), 1,3,5-tris{4-(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (4) and 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris{4-(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (5) have been prepared and characterized. The single crystal structure of 1·1.75DMF was determined; 1 exhibits a propeller-shaped geometry with each of the three 4,2':6',4''-tpy domains being crystallographically independent. Packing of molecules of 1 is dominated by face-to-face π-stacking interactions which is consistent with the low solubility of 1 in common organic solvents. Reaction of 5 with [Cu(hfacac)2]·H2O (Hhfacac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione) under conditions of crystal growth by layering resulted in the formation of [Cu3(hfacac)6(5)] n ·2.8nC7H8·0.4nCHCl3. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals an unusual 1D-coordination polymer consisting of a series of alternating single and double loops. Each of the three crystallographically independent Cu atoms is octahedrally sited with cis-arrangements two N-donors from two different ligands 1 and, therefore, cis-arrangements of coordinated [hfacac]- ligands; this observation is unusual among compounds in the Cambridge Structural Database containing {Cu(hfacac)2N2} coordination units in which the two N-donors are in a non-chelating ligand.

Organic-Ru2+ Cluster Initiated Dendritic-faced Metallo-Octahedron and Its Unpredictable Photoactivity

Stoichiometrically Controlled Assembly of Lanthanide Molecular Complexes of the Heteroditopic Divergent Ligand 4'-(4-Pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine N-Oxide in Hypodentate or Bridging Coordination Modes. Structural, Magnetic, and Photoluminescence Studies

Mononuclear rare-earth tris-β-diketonato complexes RE(tta)₃dme [RE = Y (1), La (2), Dy (3), or Eu (4); Htta = 2-thenoylacetone; dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane] react cleanly at room temperature in a 1:1 molar ratio with the heteroditopic divergent ligand 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine N-oxide (pyterpyNO) to yield RE₂(tta)₆(pyterpyNO)_n, where n = 2 for RE = Y (5), Dy (6), or Eu (7) and n = 3 for RE = La (8). The crystal structure of 5 revealed a dinuclear compound with two pyterpyNO's bridging through the oxygen atom in a hypodentate mode leaving the terpyridine moieties uncoordinated. Using a metal:pyterpyNO molar ratio of 2 for RE = Y (9), Dy (10), or Eu (11), it was possible to isolate the molecular complexes RE₄(tta)₁₂(pyterpyNO)₂, while using a 5:3 molar ratio, the product La₅(tta)₁₂(pyterpyNO)₃ (12) can be obtained. ⁸⁹Y nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed two different yttrium centers at room temperature for 9. An X-ray diffraction study of 10 showed a symmetrical tetranuclear structure resulting from the coordination of two Dy(tta)₃ fragments to the two hypodentate terpyridines of the dinuclear unit and presenting two different coordination sites for metals with coordination numbers of 8 and 9. Magnetic studies of 6 and 10 revealed the presence of an antiferromagnetic interaction between the two Dy(III) atoms bound by the NO bridges. These compounds displayed a slow relaxing magnetization through Orbach (6) and Raman (10) processes in the absence of an applied magnetic field; the rate increased upon application of a 1 kOe field. 7 and 11 showed a bright red emission typical of Eu³⁺. The two complexes have similar emission properties mainly determined by the employed β-diketonato ligands.

Designing narcissistic self-sorting terpyridine moieties with high coordination selectivity for complex metallo-supramolecules

Coordination-driven self-assembly is a powerful approach for the construction of metallosupramolecules, but designing coordination moieties that can drive the self-assembly with high selectivity and specificity remains a challenge. Here we report two ortho-modified terpyridine ligands that form head-to-tail coordination complexes with Zn(II). Both complexes show narcissistic self-sorting behaviour. In addition, starting from these ligands, we obtain two sterically congested multitopic ligands and use them to construct more complex metallo-supramolecules hexagons. Because of the non-coaxial structural restrictions in the rotation of terpyridine moieties, these hexagonal macrocycles can hierarchically self-assemble into giant cyclic nanostructures via edge-to-edge stacking, rather than face-to-face stacking. Our design of dissymmetrical coordination moieties from congested coordination pairs show remarkable self-assembly selectivity and specificity.

Ru(II)-Based Metallo-Supramolecular Polymer with Tetrakis(N-methylbenzimidazolyl)bipyridine for a Durable, Nonvolatile, and Electrochromic Device Driven at 0.6 V

Low-voltage operation, high durability, and long memory time are demanded for electrochromic (EC) display device applications. Metallo-supramolecular polymers (MSPs), composed of a metal ion and ditopic ligand, are one of the recently developed EC materials, and the ligand modification is expected to tune the redox potential of MSP. In order to lower the redox potential of MSP, tetrakis(N-methylbenzimidazolyl)bipyridine (L_Bip) was designed as an electronically rich ligand. Ru-based MSP (polyRu-L_Bip) was successfully synthesized by 1:1 complexation of RuCl₂(DMSO)₄ with L_Bip. The molecular weight (M_w) was high (8.8 × 10⁶ Da) enough to provide a simple ¹H NMR spectrum, of which the proton peaks could be assigned by the comparison with the spectrum of the corresponding mono-Ru complex. The redox potential (E_1/2) between Ru(II/III) was 0.51 V versus Ag/Ag⁺, which was much lower than the redox potential of previously reported Ru-based MSP with bis(terpyridyl)benzene (0.95 V vs Ag/Ag⁺). The polymer film exhibited reversible, distinct color changes between violet and light green-yellow upon applying very low potentials of 0 and 0.6 V vs Ag/Ag⁺, respectively. The appearance and disappearance of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption by the electrochemical redox between Ru(II/III) were confirmed using in situ spectro-electrochemical measurement. A solid-state EC device with polyRu-L_Bip was revealed to have large optical contrast (ΔT 54%), fast response time (1.37 s for bleaching and 0.67 s for coloration), remarkable coloration efficiency (571 cm²/C), and high durability for the repeated color changes more than 20,000 cycles. The device also showed a long optical memory time of up to 19 h to maintain 40% to the initial contrast under the open circuit conditions. It is considered that the stabilization of the Ru(III) state by L_Bip suppressed the self-coloring to Ru(II) inside the device.

Synthesis and Characterization of Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers Based on Benzodipyrrolidone

A simple route to the preparation of benzodipyrrolidone (BDP) based monomeric building blocks containing 2,2':6',2″-terpyridines is reported from a common precursor 4'-(4-pinacolatoboronphenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine via Suzuki coupling reaction. Self-assembly polymerization with ruthenium (II) ions under mild conditions yielded a series of novel metallo-supramolecular polymers with weak donor-acceptor (D-A) structures based on benzodipyrrolidone. The structure of the bridge connected BDP with terpyridine have a significant impact on the wavelength and intensity of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) absorption peak. The resulting metallo-polymers exhibited strong double absorption bands around 315 nm and 510 nm involved in π-π* transitions and ICT or metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption bands. The forming of D-A structure and coordination with ruthenium (II) ions is favorable to narrow the energy gap and the energy gaps of the resulting metallo-supramolecular polymers are 2.01 and 1.62 eV, respectively.

Terpyridine-Based 3D Metal-Organic-Frameworks: A Structure-Property Correlation

Design, synthesis, and applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the most salient fields of research in modern inorganic and materials chemistry. As the structure and physical properties of MOFs are mostly dependent on the organic linkers or ligands, the choice of ligand system is of utmost importance in the design of MOFs. One such crucial organic linker/ligand is terpyridine (tpy), which can adopt various coordination modes to generate an enormous number of metal-organic frameworks. These frameworks generally carry physicochemical characteristics induced by the π-electron-rich (basically N-electron-rich moiety) terpyridines. In this minireview, the construction of 3D MOFs associated with symmetrical terpyridines is discussed. These ligands can be easily derivatized at the lateral phenyl (4'-phenyl) position and incorporate additional organic functionalities. These functionalities lead to some different binding modes and form higher dimensional (3D) frameworks. Therefore, these 3D MOFs can carry multiple features along with the characteristics of terpyridines. Some properties of these MOFs, like photophysical, chemical selectivity, photocatalytic degradation, proton conductivity, and magnetism, etc. have also been discussed and correlated with their frameworks.

Functionalised Terpyridines and Their Metal Complexes—Solid-State Interactions

Analysis of the weak interactions within the crystal structures of 33 complexes of various 4′-aromatic derivatives of 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (tpy) shows that interactions that exceed dispersion are dominated, as expected, by cation⋯anion contacts but are associated with both ligand–ligand and ligand–solvent contacts, sometimes multicentred, in generally complicated arrays, probably largely determined by dispersion interactions between stacked aromatic units. With V(V) as the coordinating cation, there is evidence that the polarisation of the ligand results in an interaction exceeding dispersion at a carbon bound to nitrogen with oxygen or fluorine, an interaction unseen in the structures of M(II) (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ru and Cd) complexes, except when 1,2,3-trimethoxyphenyl substituents are present in the 4′-tpy.

Design and Synthesis of Luminescent Lanthanide-Based Bimodal Nanoprobes for Dual Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Optical Imaging

Current biomedical imaging techniques are crucial for the diagnosis of various diseases. Each imaging technique uses specific probes that, although each one has its own merits, do not encompass all the functionalities required for comprehensive imaging (sensitivity, non-invasiveness, etc.). Bimodal imaging methods are therefore rapidly becoming an important topic in advanced healthcare. This bimodality can be achieved by successive image acquisitions involving different and independent probes, one for each mode, with the risk of artifacts. It can be also achieved simultaneously by using a single probe combining a complete set of physical and chemical characteristics, in order to record complementary views of the same biological object at the same time. In this scenario, and focusing on bimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and optical imaging (OI), probes can be engineered by the attachment, more or less covalently, of a contrast agent (CA) to an organic or inorganic dye, or by designing single objects containing both the optical emitter and MRI-active dipole. If in the first type of system, there is frequent concern that at some point the dye may dissociate from the magnetic dipole, it may not in the second type. This review aims to present a summary of current activity relating to this kind of dual probes, with a special emphasis on lanthanide-based luminescent nano-objects.

Self-Assembly of Metallo-Supramolecules with Dissymmetrical Ligands and Characterization by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Asymmetrical and dissymmetrical structures are widespread and play a critical role in nature and life systems. In the field of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, it is still in its infancy for constructing artificial architectures using dissymmetrical building blocks. Herein, we report the self-assembly of supramolecular systems based on two dissymmetrical double-layered ligands. With the aid of ultra-high-vacuum, low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-LT-STM), we were able to investigate four isomeric structures corresponding to four types of binding modes of ligand LA with two major conformations complexes A. The distribution of isomers measured by STM and total binding energy of each isomer obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the most abundant isomer could be the most stable one with highest total binding energy. Finally, through shortening the linker between inner and outer layers and the length of arms, the arrangement of dissymmetrical ligand LB could be controlled within one binding mode corresponding to the single conformation for complexes B.
