Abstract
Tetranuclear [2 × 2] square-grid-like LnIII clusters have been synthesized by reacting LnCl3·6H2O salts with bis[α-hydroxy(p-bromophenyl)methyl]phosphinic acid [R2PO2H, where R = CH(OH)PhBr] and pivalic acid. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show the formation of [Me4N]2[Ln4(μ2-η1:η1-PO2R2)8(η2-CO2But)4(μ4-CO3)] [Ln = Er (1), Dy (2), and Tb (3)]. Direct-current studies reveal significant ferromagnetic interactions between DyIII in 2 and TbIII in 3 and an antiferromagnetic interaction between ErIII in 1. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm a single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in both 0 and 1200 Oe applied magnetic fields for 2. Complexes 2 and 3 show single molecular toroic (SMT) behavior with a mixed magnetic moment.

Abstract
Two closely related yet distinctly different cationic clusters, [Dy52Ni44(HEIDA)36(OH)138(OAc)24(H2O)30]10+ (1) and [Dy112Ni76(HEIDA)44(EIDA)24(IDA)4(OH)268(OAc)48(H2O)44]4+ (2) (HEIDA=N-(2-hydroxyethyl)iminodiacetate), each featuring a multi-shell core of Platonic and Archimedean polyhedra, were obtained. Depending on the specific conditions used for the co-hydrolysis of Dy3+ and Ni2+, the product can be crystallized out as one particular type of cluster or as a mixture of 1 and 2. How the reaction process was affected by the amount of hydrolysis-facilitating base and/or by the reaction temperature and duration was investigated. It has been found that a reaction at a high temperature and/or for an extended period favors the formation of the compact and thermodynamically more stable 1, while a brief reaction with a large amount of the base is good for the kinetic product 2. By tuning these intertwining conditions, the reaction can be regulated toward a particular product.

Abstract
Synthesis of nonameric cationic clusters [Dy9(acac)16(μ3-OH)8(μ4-OH)2]OH·6H2O (1), [Dy8Tb (acac)16(μ3-OH)8(μ4-OH)2]OH·2H2O (2), and [Gd9(acac)16(μ3-OH)8(μ4-OH)2]OH·6H2O (3) (acac = acetylacetonate) is reported. The emission spectrum of 1 shows Dy(III) ion characteristic bands assignable to the 4F9/2 → 6HJ (J = 15/2 to 9/2) transitions. Emission due to both Dy(III) and Tb(III) ions is observed for 2 in the visible range, with Tb(III) specific bands appearing due to the 5D4 → 7FJ (J = 6, 4, and 3) transitions. Cluster 3 exhibits a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE), with -ΔSm values increasing with decrease in temperature and increase in field, reaching -ΔSmmax = 20.98 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K and 9 T. Isotropic magnetic coupling constants (Js) in 3 derived from density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the exchange interactions are antiferromagnetic and weak. Compound 3 possesses S = 7/2 ground state arising from the central Gd(III) ion along with several nested excited states due to competing antiferromagnetic interactions that yield reasonably large MCE values. Utilizing computed exchange coupling interactions, we have performed ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/POL_ANISO calculations on antiferromagnetic 1 and 2 to estimate the exchange interactions using the Lines model. For 2, Dy(III)···Tb(III) exchange interactions were extracted for the first time and were found to be weakly antiferromagnetically coupled.

Abstract
In this paper, we report the successful assembly of achiral {Ln6M} ([Ln6M(μ3-OH)8(acac)12(CH3O)x(CH3OH)y], Ln = La, M = Mn, Co, Fe) and chiral {Nd9Fe2} ([Nd9Fe2(μ4-O)(μ3-OH)14(acac)16(NO3)(CH3OH)2(H2O)3]) rare earth clusters using achiral rigid ligands and a transition metal doping strategy. {Ln6M} can be viewed as the fusion of two {Ln3M} tetrahedrons by sharing vertices. {Nd9Fe2} results from the fusion of four {Ln3M} tetrahedrons by vertice and edge sharing. The substitution of Ln with transition metal leads to changes in the coordination pattern around neighboring Ln, which triggers the switch of metal center chirality. This study demonstrates the potentiality of utilizing transition metal doping and rigid ligand to control the chirality of rare earth clusters. In addition, the photocatalytic CO2 activity of these transition metal-doped rare earth clusters has been studied.

Abstract
A linker design strategy is developed to attain novel polynuclear rare-earth (RE) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unprecedented topologies. We uncover the critical role of ortho-functionalized tricarboxylate ligands in directing the construction of highly connected RE MOFs. The acidity and conformation of the tricarboxylate linkers were altered by substituting with diverse functional groups at the ortho position of the carboxyl groups. For instance, the acidity difference between carboxylate moieties resulted in forming three hexanuclear RE MOFs with novel (3,3,3,10,10)-c wxl, (3,12)-c gmx, and (3,3,3,12)-c joe topologies, respectively. In addition, when a bulky methyl group was introduced, the incompatibility between the net topology and ligand conformation guided the co-appearance of hexanuclear and tetranuclear clusters, generating a novel 3-periodic MOF with a (3,3,8,10)-c kyw net. Interestingly, a fluoro-functionalized linker prompted the formation of two unusual trinuclear clusters and produced a MOF with a fascinating (3,8,10)-c lfg topology, which could be gradually replaced by a more stable tetranuclear MOF with a new (3,12)-c lee topology with extended reaction time. This work enriches the polynuclear clusters library of RE MOFs and unveils new opportunities to construct MOFs with unprecedented structural complexity and vast application potential.

Abstract
Nonanuclear lanthanide clusters Ln9 (Ln = Tb and Eu) based on p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H4TC4A) have been synthesized by the solvothermal reaction and were structurally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The framework of Ln9 can be termed as a sandglass-like structure whose two Ln4-TC4A polynuclear secondary building units are bridged by one octa-coordinate {Ln(μ3-O)8} unit. Efficient TC4A-to-Ln energy transfer was observed for Tb9 but not for Eu9. The luminescence quantum yield (QY) of Tb9 in the solid state at room temperature was determined to be 17.6%, while its highest QY in a methanolic solution (2 × 10-5 mol/L) is 59.2% upon excitation at 318 nm. The luminescence of Tb9 was quenched selectively by derivatives of p-nitrobenzene, as demonstrated by the results of photoluminescence and UV-vis titration experiments and supported by density functional theory calculations. We believe that the interactions between the analyte molecules and the pocket of Tb9 are primarily responsible for the observed quenching. As such, this work represents one of the few examples of utilizing structurally interesting lanthanide cluster complexes as a sensory platform for the recognition of meaningful analytes and portends the further development of lanthanide-calixarene-complex-based functional materials.

Abstract
A cubane-like complex dianion [Tb4(OH)4(tfa)6(hfac)4]2− was synthesized, accompanied by two counter cations of [Ni(hfac)(2pyIN)2]+, where Htfa, Hhfac, and 2pyIN stand for trifluoroacetic acid, 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione, and 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-pyridylimidazolin-1-oxyl, respectively. In the complex anion, each Tb ion was capped with hfac, and each Tb···Tb diagonal was bridged with tfa, thus forming an approximate Td symmetry, though the whole molecular formula was crystallographically independent in an orthorhombic Pbca space group. The ionic charge was −2 in total. The magnetic study revealed that the complex ions were magnetically isolated from each other. Practically no 4f–4f superexchange interaction was operative, while the 2p–3d ferromagnetic coupling seemed to be appreciable, as anticipated from the proposed magnetostructural relationship.

Abstract
A series of tetranuclear lanthanide-based clusters [Ln4(dbm)6(L)2(CH3OH)4]·2CH3OH (Ln(III) = Gd (1), Dy (2), and Ho (3); H3L = 2-[(2-(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide)methyl]-2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, Hdbm = dibenzoylmethane) and octanuclear lanthanide-based clusters [Ln8(HL)10(CH3O)4(CH3OH)2]·6CH3OH (Ln(III) = Gd (4), Dy (5)) were assembled using a polydentate Schiff-base ligand H3L and two different β-diketone salts via a solvothermal method, and their structures and magnetic properties have been characterized. Interestingly, β-diketones play an important role in assembling and affecting the structures of Ln4 to Ln8 clusters. This is the first use of β-diketone to affect the structures of polynuclear Ln(III)-based clusters from linear-shaped Ln4 clusters to Ln8 clusters. Magnetic studies revealed that antiferromagnetic interactions exist in clusters 1-Gd4 and 4-Gd8. More importantly, clusters 1-Gd4 and 4-Gd8 display significant cryogenic magnetic refrigeration properties (-ΔSm = 24.88 J kg-1 K-1 for 1-Gd4 and -ΔSm = 32.52 J kg-1 K-1 for 4-Gd8); the results show that cluster 4-Gd8 exhibits a larger magnetocaloric effect than 1-Gd4. Cluster 2-Dy4 shows remarkable single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior (ΔE/kB = 67.5 K and τ0 = 3.06 × 10-7 s) under a zero dc field, and 5-Dy8 exhibits a field-induced SMM-like behavior (ΔE/kB = 39.83 K and τ0 = 2.12 × 10-7 s) under a 5000 Oe dc field.

Abstract
The unique family of coordination polymers [Ln4(OH)2(piv)10(H2O)2]∞ of 11 lanthanides (Ln = La-Er) has been prepared by a simple solution method based on controlled hydrolysis. The ribbon-like polymeric structure consisting of connected tetranuclear clusters and supported by pivalate ligands and a framework of H-bonds has been revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. While the compounds demonstrate similar PXRD patterns and unit cell parameters, the joint single-crystal XRD and pair distribution function data suggest the significant local structure change along the lanthanide series. The compounds exist as two packing polymorphs (α and β) with similar ribbon geometry, but different supramolecular arrangement of the ribbons. Dehydration of either polymorph does not disturb the tetranuclear core but leads to a translational symmetry loss along the ribbon and a transformation of the 3D-ordered crystal into a 2D-ordered mesostructure. Rehydration of the mesostructure leads to the β polymorph (except La and Ce), allowing the deliberate switching between the polymorphs via dehydration-rehydration evidenced by means of powder X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, and density functional theory calculations. Ab initio calculations reveal significant magnetic anisotropy of Ln3+ ions with ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions within tetranuclear [Ln4(OH)2(piv)10(H2O)2] species. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated antiferromagnetic coupling, slow magnetic relaxation for Dy, Ho, and Er complexes, and field-induced single-chain magnetism for the Dy compound.

Abstract
Three new supramolecular coordination polymers, namely [Zn(1,3-BDC)(HL)]n (Polymer 1), [Zn3(1,3,5-BTC)2(HL)2(H2O)2]n (Polymer 2), and [Zn9(5-SO3-1,3-BDC)2(L)8(OH)4]n (Polymer 3), were synthesized under solvothermal conditions, based on 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-3-amine (HL) along with 1,3-benzenedicarboxylate (1,3-BDC) and its derivatives, such as 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (1,3,5-BTC) and 5-sulfo-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate (5-SO3-1,3-BDC). Polymers 1–3 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Polymer 1 exhibited a two-dimensional (2D) 4-connected sql net. The neighboring 2D nets were further linked into a 3D supramolecular network by hydrogen-bonding interactions. Polymer 2 displayed a 3D (4, 4, 4)-connected network, which was further stabilized by R22(14) and S(9) hydrogen-bonding rings along with π–π interactions. The 2D sheet structure of Polymer 3 was constructed by novel quasi-linear nonanuclear Zn(II) units, which further extended into a 3D supramolecular structure by hydrogen-bonding interactions. The solid-state photoluminescence properties of Polymers 1–3 were also investigated.

Abstract
To explore the influences of the subtle structural variations in the ligand backbones on the single-molecule magnetic properties of dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes, three ligands-H2 L1 (H2 L1 =N1 ,N3 -bis(salicylaldehyde)diethylenetriamine), H2 L2 (H2 L2 =N1 ,N3 -bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine), and H2 L3 (H2 L3 =N1 ,N3 -bis(5-chlorosalicyladehyde)diethylenetriamine)-were synthesized and employed to prepare the expected dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes. The three ligands differ in terms of the substituents at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde moieties. The reactions of Dy(NO3 )3 ⋅6 H2 O, pivalic acid, and the ligands H2 L1 , H2 L2 , and H2 L3 generated complexes with the formulae [Dy2 (L1 )2 (piv)2 ] (1), [Dy2 (L2 )2 (piv)2 ] (2), and [Dy2 (L3 )2 (piv)2 ]⋅ 2 MeCN (3), respectively. The purposeful attachment of the functional groups with varied sizes at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde backbones resulted in slight differences in the Dy-O-Dy bond angles and the Dy⋅⋅⋅Dy bond lengths in 1-3; consequently, the three complexes exhibited distinct magnetic properties. They all showed slow magnetization relaxation with energy barriers of 40.32 (1), 31.67 (2), and 33.53 K (3). Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on complexes 1-3 to rationalize the slight discrepancy observed in the magnetic behavior. The calculated results satisfactorily explained the experimental outcomes.

Abstract
In an attempt to investigate the influence of many variables on the synthesis of lanthanide coordination polymers (Ln-CPs) assembled from the ligand 3,3-dimethylcyclopropane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid, three different Ln-CPs with formulae [La9(μ4-dcd)12(μ3-O)2(H)] n (1), [Gd4(μ4-dcd)6(H2O)] n (2), and [Gd2(μ3-OH)2(μ3-dcd)(μ2-ac)2(H2O)] n (3) (dcd = 3,3-dimethylcyclopropane-1,2-dicarboxylate, ac = acetate) have been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, thermal analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and single X-ray diffraction techniques. 1 represents the first report of the three-dimensional (3D) Ln-CPs based on nonanuclear lanthanide clusters, although it shows extremely low gas uptakes. 2 exhibits one of the previously reported 3D lanthanide wheel cluster-like frameworks. 3 characterizes a novel one-dimensional ladder-like chain [Gd4(OH)4] n decorated with mixed ligand ribbons. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurement reveals that the shortest Gd···Gd distance in 3 induces the antiferromagnetic interactions between adjacent Gd3+ cations within the hydroxyl-bridged binuclear unit. Remarkably, magnetic investigation for 2 indicates a unique metamagnetic transition from the antiferromagnet to ferromagnet. Furthermore, magnetic studies for 2 also exhibit the presence of significant magnetocaloric effect with a large magnetic entropy change.

Abstract
A novel pentadecanuclear lanthanide hydroxy cluster [{Ln15(μ3-OH)20(PepCO2)10(DBM)10Cl}Cl4] (Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2)) featuring the first example with peptoids as supporting ligands was prepared and fully characterized. The solid-state structures of 1 and 2 were established via single-crystal X-ray crystallography. ESI-MS experiments revealed the retention of the cluster core in solution. Although OH groups are present, 1 showed intense red fluorescence with 11(1)% absolute quantum yield, whereas the emission intensity and the quantum yield of 2 were significantly weaker. In vitro investigations on 1 and 2 with HeLa tumor cells revealed an accumulation of the clusters in the endosomal-lyosomal system, as confirmed by confocal microscopy in the TRLLM mode. The cytotoxicity of 1 and 2 toward the HeLa cells is moderate.
