Photorenewable Azobenzene Polymer Brush-Modified Nanoadsorbent for Selective Adsorption of LDL in Serum

The elevated concentration of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is recognized as a leading factor of hyperlipidemia (HLP), and selective adsorption of serum LDL is regarded as a practical therapy. Based on the superior structure-function characteristics of stimuli-responsive materials, a photorenewable nanoadsorbent (SiO₂@Azo@Gly) with high selectivity and reusability was developed using azobenzene as the functional ligand. Its principle was certified by the preparation of silicon nanoparticles with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP)-initiating groups via a sol-gel reaction and their subsequent grafting of azobenzene polymer brushes by surface-initiated ATRP, followed by modification with glycine. Immobilization of carboxylated azobenzene polymer brushes onto the nanoparticles endowed SiO₂@Azo@Gly with high adsorption selectivity and reusability. The advanced nanoadsorbent exhibited excellent LDL adsorption capacity at about 27 mg/g and could be regenerated by illumination with high efficiency (circulations ≥ 5); this was further verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. SiO₂@Azo@Gly also demonstrated superior adsorption efficiency and selectivity in serum from HLP patients, the respective adsorption capacities of LDL, triglyceride, and total cholesterol were about 15.65, 24.48, and 28.36 mg/g, and the adsorption to high-density lipoprotein (cardioprotective effect) was only about 3.66 mg/g. Green regeneration of the nanoadsorbent could be achieved completely through a simple photoregeneration process, and the recovery rate was still 97.9% after five regeneration experiments.

Azobenzene-modified Ag/Ag2O/CN photocatalysts with photoresponsive performance for controllable photodegradation of tetracyclines

In this work, an Azo@Ag/Ag₂O/CN composite photocatalyst with light-responsive performance was successfully prepared by precipitation and emulsion polymerization. Azo@Ag/Ag₂O/CN exhibits cis-trans isomerism under different light exposures.

Ultrasensitive separation of methylprednisolone acetate using a photoresponsive molecularly imprinted polymer incorporated polyester dendrimer based on magnetic nanoparticles

We developed an approach for the use of polyester dendrimer during the imprinting process to raise the number of recognized sites in the polymer matrix and improve its identification ability. Photoresponsive molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized on modified magnetic nanoparticles involving polyester dendrimer which uses the reactivity between allyl glycidyl ether and acrylic acid for the high-yielding assembly by surface polymerization. The photoresponsive molecularly imprinted polymers were constructed using methylprednisoloneacetate as the template, water-soluble azobenzene involving 5-[(4, 3-(methacryloyloxy) phenyl) diazenyl] dihydroxy aniline as the novel functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker. Through the evaluation of a series of features of spectroscopic and nano-structural, this sorbent showed excellent selective adsorption, recognition for the template, and provided a highly selective and sensitive strategy for determining the methylprednisoloneacetate in real and pharmaceutical samples. In addition, this sorbent according to good photo-responsive features and specific affinity to methylprednisoloneacetate with high recognition ability, represented higher binding capacity, a more extensive specific area, and faster mass transfer rate than its corresponding surface molecularly imprinted polymer.

Thermo-Responsive Molecularly Imprinted Hydrogels for Selective Adsorption and Controlled Release of Phenol From Aqueous Solution

In this study, thermo-responsive molecularly imprinted hydrogels (T-MIHs) were developed as an effective potential adsorbent for selectively adsorption phenol from wastewater. During the process, N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAm) was used as thermal responsive monomer. The obtained materials were characterized in detail by fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). A series of static adsorption studies were performed to investigate the kinetics, specific adsorption equilibrium, and selective recognition ability of phenol. Reversible adsorption and release of phenol were realized by changing temperatures. Three type of phenols, namely 3-chlorophenols (3-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) were selected as model analytes to evaluate the selective recognition performance of T-MIHs. The T-MIHs have good selectivity, temperature response, and reusability, making them ideal in applying in the controlled separation and release of phenol pollutants.

Nanosized Difunctional Photo Responsive Magnetic Imprinting Polymer for Electrochemically Monitored Light-Driven Paracetamol Extraction

Herein, a novel photoresponsive magnetic electrochemical imprinting sensor for the selective extraction of paracetamol from biological samples was designed. In particular, nanosized photoresponsive molecular imprinted polymers were prepared on the surface of magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles through living radical polymerization of azobenzene. The introduction of a magnetic-controlled glassy carbon electrode makes the immobilization and removal of nanosized photoresponsive molecular imprinted polymers on the magnetic-controlled glassy carbon electrode surface facilely operational. With the photoresponsive property, the sensor undergoes reversible release and uptake of paracetamol upon alternative irradiation at 365 and 440 nm basing on a configurational change of azobenzene monomer in the photoresponsive molecular imprinted polymers receptor sites. Simultaneously, these processes are monitored by the photoresponsive changes of electrochemical signal from paracetamol. Two linear ranges from 0.001 to 0.7 mmol L^-1 (R² = 0.96) and 0.7 to 7 mmol L^-1 (R² = 0.95) for paracetamol determination were obtained with a quantification limit of 0.000 86 mmol L^-1 and a detection limit of 0.000 43 mmol L^-1. The recoveries of paracetamol in the urine as determined by photoresponsive molecular imprinted polymers extraction were varied between 87.5% and 93.3%. As a consequence, combining photocontrolled selective extraction, interfacial stability from magnetic adsorption, and specifically electrochemical response, the photoresponsive molecular imprinted polymers sensor shows significant advantages for simultaneous separation, enrichment, and detection of trace paracetamol in biological samples.

Preparation of Photoirradiation Molecular Imprinting Polymer for Selective Separation of Branched Cyclodextrins

In the present study, photoirradiation molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with azobenzene was used as a functional monomer for the selective separation of the branched cyclodextrins. The functional monomer 4-methacryloyloxy azobenzene (MAA) and the molecular template 6-O-α-d-maltosyl-β-cyclodextrin (G2-β-CD) were implemented for the molecular imprinting. The core-shell structure of photoirradiation MIP was visualized by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). With Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), we identified that G2-β-CD was imprinted into the polymer and removed from the MIP. The binding association constant (K_a) and the maximum number of the binding site (N_max) were 1.72 × 10⁴ M^-1 and 7.93 μmol·g^-1 MIP, respectively. With alternate irradiation at 365 and 440 nm light, the prepared MIP reversibly released and rebound to the G2-β-CD, which resulted in the nearly zero amount of G2-β-CD in the solution. The HPLC results indicated that the purity of G2-β-CD could reach 90.8% after going through MIP. The main finding of our study was that the photoirradiation of MIP was an easy and effective method for the selective separation of the branched cyclodextrins.

Molecular imprinting: perspectives and applications

This critical review presents a survey of recent developments in technologies and strategies for the preparation of MIPs, followed by the application of MIPs in sample pretreatment, chromatographic separation and chemical sensing.

Hydrophilic Hollow Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Microparticles with Photo- and Thermoresponsive Template Binding and Release Properties in Aqueous Media

A facile, general, and efficient approach to prepare hydrophilic hollow molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) microparticles with photo- and thermoresponsive template binding and release behaviors in aqueous media is described, which includes the preparation of uniform "living" silica submicrospheres bearing surface atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP)-initiating groups (i.e., alkyl halide groups) via a one-pot sol-gel method, their subsequent grafting of azobenzene (azo)-containing MIP shell and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PNIPAAm-b-PHEMA) brushes via successive surface-initiated ATRP, and final removal of the silica core. The successful synthesis of such hydrophilic hollow MIP microparticles was confirmed with SEM, FT-IR, water dispersion stability, and static contact angle studies. They proved to show apparently higher template binding capacities than the corresponding solid ones and obvious photo- and thermoresponsive template binding properties in aqueous solutions. Moreover, their pronounced light- and temperature-controlled template release in aqueous media was also demonstrated. In particular, the introduction of PNIPAAm-b-PHEMA brushes onto hollow MIP microparticles imparted them with high surface hydrophilicity both below and above the lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAAm, which paves the way for their applications in such areas as controlled drug/chemical delivery and smart bioanalysis.

Review of the recent progress in photoresponsive molecularly imprinted polymers containing azobenzene chromophores

Photoresponsive molecularly imprinted polymers (PMIPs) containing azobenzene have received wide research attention in recent years and made notable achievements. This article reviews the recent developments on PMIPs containing azobenzene. Topics include the following: (i) brief introduction of azobenzene, molecularly imprinted polymers, and PMIPs containing azobenzene; (ii) progress in functional monomers, cross-linkers, and polymerization conditions; (iii) preparation methods, properties, applications, as well as advantages and disadvantages of conventional PMIPs; (iv) substrate, preparation method, and applications of photoresponsive surface molecularly imprinted polymers; and (v) some perspectives for further development of PMIPs containing azobenzene.

Metal complex modified azo polymers for multilevel organic memories

Multilevel organic memories have attracted considerable interest due to their high capacity of data storage. Despite advances, the search for multilevel memory materials still remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we present a rational design and synthesis of a class of polymers containing an azobenzene-pyridine group (PAzo-py) and its derivatives, for multilevel organic memory storage. In this design, a metal complex (M(Phen)Cl2, M = Cu, Pd) is employed to modify the HOMO-LUMO energy levels of azo polymers, thereby converting the memory state from binary to ternary. More importantly, this approach enables modulating the energy levels of azo polymers by varying the coordination metal ions. This makes the achievement of high performance multilevel memories possible. The ability to tune the bandgap energy of azo polymers provides new exciting opportunities to develop new materials for high-density data storage.

Preparation of protein imprinted polymer beads by Pickering emulsion polymerization

We present a new method for preparation of protein-specific polymer beads based on surface molecular imprinting in Pickering emulsion. In the first step, adult human hemoglobin (Hb) was adsorbed on silica nanoparticles. The protein-coated silica particles were then used to stabilize an oil-in-water emulsion (Pickering emulsion) composed of cross-linking monomer in the oil phase. After free radical polymerization of the oil phase, the protein-silica particles were removed to leave Hb-imprinted sites on the polymer surface. The protein-imprinted polymer microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and their selectivity was investigated by protein binding analysis. The new synthetic method based on Pickering emulsion polymerization produced easily accessible Hb binding sites on the surface of spherical polymer particles, which are useful for protein separation, purification and analysis.

Fabrication and evaluation of artemisinin-imprinted composite membranes by developing a surface functional monomer-directing prepolymerization system

Inspired by a surface functional monomer-directing prepolymerization system, a straightforward and effective synthesis method was first developed to prepare highly regenerate and perm-selective molecularly imprinted composite membranes of artemisinin (Ars) molecules. Attributing to the formation of the prepolymerization system, Ars molecules are attracted and bound to the membrane surface, hence promoting the growth of homogeneous and high-density molecular recognition sites on the surface of membrane materials. Afterward, a two-step-temperature imprinting procedure was carried out to prepare the novel surface functional monomer capping molecularly imprinted membranes (FMIMs). The as-prepared FMIMs not only exhibited highly adsorption capacity (11.91 mg g(-1)) but also showed an outstanding specific selectivity (imprinting factor α is 4.50) and excellent perm-selectivity ability (separation factor β is 10.60) toward Ars molecules, which is promising for Ars separation and purification.

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years 2004-2011

Herein, we present a survey of the literature covering the development of molecular imprinting science and technology over the years 2004-2011. In total, 3779 references to the original papers, reviews, edited volumes and monographs from this period are included, along with recently identified uncited materials from prior to 2004, which were omitted in the first instalment of this series covering the years 1930-2003. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by sections describing fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting including the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing efforts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented. Current trends and areas of rapid development are discussed.

Molecularly imprinted polymer microspheres containing photoswitchable spiropyran-based binding sites

A versatile approach for the preparation of photoswitchable molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) is proposed where the selective recognition and the photoresponsive function are assumed by two different monomers. As a proof of concept, MIP microspheres were synthesized by precipitation polymerization for recognizing terbutylazine, a triazine-type herbicide. Formation of the selective binding sites was based upon H-bonding interactions between the template and the functional monomer methacrylic acid, whereas a polymerizable spiropyran unit was incorporated into the polymer matrix to provide light-controllable characteristics. A trifunctional monomer, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, was used as a cross-linker. The imprinted particles exhibited considerable morphological differences compared to their nonimprinted counterparts as observed by scanning electron microscopy. The imprinting effect was confirmed by equilibrium rebinding studies. The photoresponsiveness of the polymer particles was visualized by fluorescence microscopy and further characterized by spectroscopy. The template binding behavior could be regulated by alternating UV and visible light illumination when analyte release and uptake was observed, respectively. Binding isotherms fitted by the Freundlich model revealed the photomodulation of the number of binding sites and their average affinity. This facile synthetic approach may give an attractive starting point to endow currently existing highly selective MIPs with photoswitchable properties, thereby extending the scope of spiropyran-based photoresponsive smart materials.

Molecularly Imprinted Hydrogels for Affinity-controlled and Stimuli-responsive Drug Delivery

The performance of smart or intelligent hydrogels as drug-delivery systems (DDSs) can be notably improved if the network is endowed with high-affinity receptors for the therapeutic molecule. Conventional molecular imprinting technology aims to create tailored binding pockets (artificial receptors) in the structure of rigid polymers by means of a template polymerization, in which the target molecules themselves induce a specific arrangement of the functional monomers during polymer synthesis. Adaptation of this technology to hydrogel synthesis implicates the optimization of the imprinting pocket to be able to recover the high-affinity conformation when distorted by swelling or after the action of a stimulus. This chapter analyzes the implementation of the molecular imprinting technology to the synthesis of both non-responsive and responsive loosely cross-linked hydrogels, and provides recent examples of the suitability of the imprinted networks to attain affinity-controlled, activation-controlled or stimuli-triggered drug and protein release.

Structure, enhancement and white luminescence of multifunctional Lu₆O₅F₈:20%Yb³⁺,1%Er³⁺(Tm³⁺) nanoparticles via further doping with Li⁺ under different excitation sources

A series of Lu6O5F8:20%Yb(3+),1%Er(3+)(Tm(3+)),x%Li(+) (0 ≤ x ≤ 12) nanoparticles with average size from 20 to 320 nm upon increasing Li(+) concentration were prepared by a coprecipitation method. The detailed crystal structure of Lu6O5F8 as a new matrix is firstly analysed via retrieved refinement of the powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, the corresponding Powder Diffraction File card information was also obtained through indexing the XRD pattern of the host. Upconversion under excitation at 980 nm, downconversion with Xe lamp as excitation source and cathodoluminescence properties of Lu6O5F8:20%Yb(3+),1%Er(3+)(Tm(3+)),x%Li(+) (0 ≤ x ≤ 12) nanoparticles were compared and studied. It is worthwhile pointing out that according to the effects of Li(+) on emission intensity ratio, white UC emission was achieved in the Lu6O5F8:6%Yb(3+),0.3%Er(3+),0.4%Tm(3+),5%Li(+) compared to Li(+) free sample with the same activator concentration. The reasons behind this behavior were presented and discussed. All in all, Li(+) ion would be a wonderful luminescence intensifier for lanthanide ions, and the multifunctional lanthanide ion-doped Lu6O5F8 nanoparticles have potential application in photoluminescence areas and field emission display devices.

Preparation of thermal-responsive magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers for selective removal of antibiotics from aqueous solution

A novel thermal-responsive magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (TMMIPs), maghemite/silica/poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (γ-Fe(2)O(3)/SiO(2)/P (NIPAm-co-AAm-co-EGDMA)), were developed as a potential effective adsorbent for selectively remove sulfamethazine (SMZ) exist in aquatic environments, which has been recognized as a warranting considerable issue. Free radical polymerization of NIPAm, AAm and EGDMA was performed in dimethyl sulfoxide/water (DMSO/H(2)O) (v/v=9/1) with 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator to coat γ-Fe(2)O(3)/SiO(2)/3-(methacryloxyl) propyl trimethoxysilane (MPS) microspheres through the capture of oligomers with the aid of vinyl groups on their surfaces. The unique aspect of TMMIPs was that they combined molecular recognition, magnetic separation and thermo-responsiveness. The got material was characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR and VSM. Batch mode adsorption studies were carried out to investigate the specific adsorption equilibrium, kinetics, and selective recognition ability of TMMIPs. Reversible recognition and release of template molecule were realized by changing environmental temperatures. Several other antibiotics were selected as model analytes to evaluate the selective recognition performance of TMMIPs. The TMMIPs have good temperature response, selectivity and reusability, making them possible in applying for antibiotics separation and controlled release.

Photoresponsive surface molecularly imprinted poly(ether sulfone) microfibers

In the present study, photoresponsive surface molecularly imprinted poly(ether sulfone) microfibers are prepared via nitration reaction, the wet-spinning technique, surface nitro reduction reaction, and surface diazotation reaction for the selectively photoregulated uptake and release of 4-hydrobenzoic acid. The prepared molecularly imprinted microfibers show selective binding to 4-HA under irradiation at 450 nm and release under irradiation at 365 nm. The simple, convenient, effective, and productive method for the preparation of azo-containing photoresponsive material is also applied to the modification of polysulfone and poly(ether ether ketone). All three benzene-ring-containing polymers show significant photoresponsibility after the azo modification.

Azobenzene-containing molecularly imprinted polymer microspheres with photo- and thermoresponsive template binding properties in pure aqueous media by atom transfer radical polymerization

A facile, general, and highly efficient approach to obtain azobenzene (azo)-containing molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) microspheres with both photo- and thermoresponsive template binding properties in pure aqueous media is described for the first time, which involves the first synthesis of "living" azo-containing MIP microspheres with surface-immobilized alkyl halide groups via atom transfer radical precipitation polymerization (ATRPP) and their subsequent modification via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm). The successful grafting of poly(NIPAAm) (PNIPAAm) brushes onto the obtained MIP microspheres was confirmed by FT-IR, SEM, water dispersion stability and static contact angle studies, and template binding experiments. The introduction of PNIPAAm brushes onto the azo-containing MIP microspheres significantly improved their surface hydrophilicity and imparted thermoresponsive properties to them, leading to their pure water-compatible and thermoresponsive template binding properties. In addition, the binding affinity of the imprinted sites in the grafted azo-containing MIP microspheres was found to be photoresponsive toward the template in pure water, and this photoregulation process proved to be highly repeatable under photoswitching conditions.

Light responsive polymer membranes: a review

In recent years, stimuli responsive materials have gained significant attention in membrane separation processes due to their ability to change specific properties in response to small external stimuli, such as light, pH, temperature, ionic strength, pressure, magnetic field, antigen, chemical composition, and so on. In this review, we briefly report recent progresses in light-driven materials and membranes. Photo-switching mechanisms, valved-membrane fabrication and light-driven properties are examined. Advances and perspectives of light responsive polymer membranes in biotechnology, chemistry and biology areas are discussed.
