Shall We Tune? From Core-Shell to Cloud Type Nanostructures in Heparin/Silica Hybrids

Heparin plays multiple biological roles depending on the availability of active sites strongly influenced by the conformation and the structure of polysaccharide chains. Combining different components at the molecular scale offers an extraordinary chance to easily tune the structural organization of heparin required for exploring new potential applications. In fact, the combination of different material types leads to challenges that cannot be achieved by each single component. In this study, hybrid heparin/silica nanoparticles were synthesized, and the role of silica as a templating agent for heparin supramolecular organization was investigated. The effect of synthesis parameters on particles compositions was deeply investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) reveals a different supramolecular organization of both components, leading to amazing organic-inorganic nanoparticles with different behavior in drug encapsulation and release. Furthermore, favorable biocompatibility for healthy human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) and tumor HS578T cells has been assessed, and a different biological behavior was observed, ascribed to different surface charge and morphology of synthesized nanoparticles.

A Sensitive Fluorescent Immunoassay for Prostate Specific Antigen Detection Based on Signal Amplify Strategy of Horseradish Peroxidase and Silicon Dioxide Nanospheres

A simple, sensitive, and fluorescent immunoassay for the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) based on horseradish peroxidase and silicon dioxide nanospheres as a signal amplification strategy has been described. In the design, the primary antibody (Ab₁) of PSA was first immobilized on the 96-well plates via physical adsorption between polystyrene and hydrophobic groups of the antibody molecule. The silicon dioxide nanospheres (SiO₂ NSs), with large surface area and good biocompatibility, were loaded with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and horseradish peroxidase-labeled secondary antibodies (HRP-Ab₂) as signal amplification systems. In the presence of PSA, a sandwich-type immunocomplex composed of Ab₁-Ag-HRP-Ab₂ had been formed. Fluorescence technology was employed to obtain the response signal of the immunoassay in the L-tyrosine and H₂O₂ systems. Experiment results showed that a strong and stable fluorescent signal at 416 nm (excitation wavelength: 325 nm) was observed, and the changes in fluorescent intensity were related to the levels of PSA. Under the optimal conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity was linear with the logarithm of PSA concentration from 0.03 to 100 ng·mL^-1, with a detection limit of 0.01 ng·mL^-1 (at a signal/noise ratio of 3). In contrast to other fluorescent immunoassays, the sandwich-type immunoreaction based on the high binding ELISA plates has the advantages of being simple, stable, and easy to operate, high selectivity, small sample quantity, etc., which can be widely used in the selective detection of a variety of targets, from DNA to proteins and small molecules. Such fluorescent immunoassays should be feasible for the fields of molecular diagnosis and other life science fields in the future.

Amino-Modified Silica as Effective Support of the Palladium Catalyst for 4-Nitroaniline Hydrogenation

The article describes the synthesis of aminoorgano-functionalized silica as a prospective material for catalysis application. The amino groups have electron donor properties which are valuable for the metal chemical state of palladium. Therefore, the presence of electron donor groups is important for increasing catalysts’ stability. The research is devoted to the investigation of silica amino-modified support influence on the activity and stability of palladium species in 4-nitroaniline hydrogenation process. A series of catalysts with different supports such as SiO2, SiO2-C3H6-NH2 (amino-functionalized silica), γ-Al2O3 and activated carbon were studied. The catalytic activity was studied in the hydrogenation of 4-nitroaniline to 1,4-phenylenediamine. The catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and chemisorption of hydrogen by the pulse technique. The 5 wt.% Pd/SiO2-C3H6-NH2 catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity for 4-nitroaniline hydrogenation with 100% conversion and 99% selectivity with respect to 1,4-phenylenediamine.

Shape-Adaptable 2D Titanium Carbide (MXene) Heater

Prior to the advent of the next-generation heater for wearable/on-body electronic devices, various properties are required, including conductivity, transparency, mechanical reliability, and conformability. Expansion to two-dimensional (2D) structure of metallic nanowires based on network- and mesh-type geometries has been widely exploited for realizing these heaters. However, the routes led to many drawbacks such as the low-density cross-bar linking, self-aggregation of wire, and high junction resistance. Although 2D carbon nanomaterials such as graphene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have shown their potentials for the purpose, CVD-grown graphene with sufficiently high conductivity was limited due to its poor processability for large-area applications, while rGO fabricated with a complex reduction process involving the use of toxic chemicals suffered from a low electrical conductivity. In this study, we demonstrate a simple and robust process, utilizing electrostatic assembling of negatively charged MXene flakes on a positively treated surface of substrate, for fabricating a metal-like 2D MXene thin film heater (TFH). Our TFH showed a high optical property (>65%), low sheet resistance (215 Ω/sq), fast electrothermal response (within dozens of seconds) with an intrinsically high electrical conductivity, and mechanical flexibility (up to 180° bending). Its capability for forming a firm and stable ionic-type interface with a counterpart surface allows us to develop a shape-adaptable and patchable thread heater (TH) that can be shaped on diverse substrates even under harsh conditions of conventional sewing or weaving processes. This work suggests that our shape-adaptable MXene heaters are potentially suitable not only for wearable devices for local heating and defrosting but also for a variety of emerging applications of soft actuators and wearable/flexible healthcare monitoring and thermotherapy.

An Easy Route to Wettability Changes of Polyethylene Terephthalate⁻Silicon Oxide Substrate Films for High Barrier Applications, Surface-Modified with a Self-Assembled Monolayer of Fluoroalkylsilanes

Inorganic⁻organic multilayer films consisting of polymers coated with thin inorganic oxidic layers (e.g., SiOx) ensure very high barrier performances against gas and vapor permeation, what makes them packaging materials suitable for sophisticated technical applications, including the encapsulation of photovoltaic devices or quantum dots, barrier films for optical displays, and transparent greenhouse screens. In these fields, surface coating or texturing of the multilayer protective films are effective technologies to improve their self-clean ability, thus reducing the required maintenance and ensuring longer durability and better performances. In this work, we used the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) technique to modify the surface and wetting properties of commercial polyethylene terephthalate-silicon oxide substrate (PET-SiOx) films developed for technical applications requiring a combined high barrier and transparency. The selected surface modifier was the 1H,1H,2H,2H-per-fluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS). The reagent mixture composition was optimized for the lowest water and oil wettability, as well as the highest self-cleaning capacity and performance stability. In particular, for the used PET-SiOx film the best FDTS/film surface for both the lowest water and oil wettability was found to be equal to 26.5 mM/dm², which changes the surface behavior from very hydrophilic (static water contact angle (CAw) = 21.5°) to hydrophobic (CAw = 101°), and gives a significant increment of the static oil contact angle (CAo) from 27° to 60°. Interestingly, the results demonstrated that the SAM reaction occurred also on the uncoated the PET side. After the SAM treatment, a small increase of the water vapor permeability is observed, probably due to a crack or defect onset of the SiOx coating of the SAM modified films. On this point, atomic force measurements demonstrated an increment of the SiOx coating layer roughness after the SAM treatment execution. Finally, the transparency changes of the SAM treated films, measured in the wavelength range 400⁻800 nm, were always small, so that the results were acceptable for the films' use in applications where high transparency is required.

Magneto-Structural and Antimicrobial Properties of Sodium Doped Lanthanum Manganite Magnetic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications: Influence of Silica Coating

Coating of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) is usually a requirement prior to their utilization in biomedical applications. However, coating can influence the magneto-structural properties of MNPs thereby imparting their applications. The present work highlights the combustion synthesis of Na-doped lanthanum manganites (LNMO) and the influence of silica coatings on the magneto-structural properties, colloidal stability and antimicrobial properties of LNMO MNPs with their biomedical applications in mind. The crystalline perovskite structure was the same both for the bare and silica coated LNMO samples while there was a slight increase in crystallite size after coating. The FTIR spectral analysis, reduction in agglomeration of the particles and the elemental composition of the coated nanoparticles confirmed the presence of silica. The magnetization values of 34 emu/g and 29 emu/g recorded for bare and coated LNMO samples, respectively show that LNMO MNPs retained its ferromagnetic behaviour after silica coating. The pH dependent zeta potentials of the coated sample is-22.20 mV at pH 7.4 (physiological pH) and-18 mV at pH 5.0 (cell endosomal pH). Generally, silica coating reduced the antibacterial activity of the sample except forBacillussppwhere the antibacterial activity was the same with the bare sample. These results showed that while silica coating had marginal effect on the crystalline structure, size and magnetization of LNMO MNPs, it reduced the antibacterial activity of LNMO MNPs and enhanced greatly the colloidal stability of LNMO nanoparticles. Covalent biofunctionalization of cellulose acetate with thermostable chimeric avidin

A stable, bioactive cellulose acetate (CA) surface was developed by functionalizing the surface with highly thermostable avidin form. The CA films were first functionalized with a mixture of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane to introduce free amino groups onto the surface of CA films. Free amino groups were functionalized with glutaraldehyde to obtain an activated surface for covalent biomolecule immobilization. A genetically engineered, high-affinity biotin-binding protein chimeric avidin, ChiAVD(I117Y), was used for biofunctionalization of the surface. The chimeric avidin protein has an increased stability in chemically harsh conditions and at high temperature when compared to wt (strept)avidin. The biological activity, i.e., biotin-binding capacity, of the immobilized protein was probed by [(3)H]-biotin. The activity of the chimeric avidin on functionalized CA films was fully retained over the three months' study period. The biotin-binding capacity of the immobilized chimeric avidin was compared to that of immobilized streptavidin, chicken avidin, and rhizavidin and significant differences between proteins were detected. The developed material offers a valuable platform for the development of inexpensive in vitro diagnostics and also supports biosensing applications that are required to operate under demanding conditions.
