Solid-State Structural Transformation and Photoluminescence Properties of Supramolecular Coordination Compounds

The combination of strong coordination bonds and hydrogen bonding interactions were used to generate a series of supramolecular coordination materials (SCMs), which was achieved by reacting a bis-pyridyl amide ligand, namely N-(4-pyridyl)nicotinamide (4PNA) with copper(II), zinc(II), and cadmium(II) benzoates. The SCMs were structurally characterized using X-ray diffraction and the key intermolecular interactions were identified via Hirshfeld surface analysis. The role of solvent molecules on the supramolecular architecture was analyzed by synthesizing the SCMs in different solvents/solvent mixtures. A solvent-mediated solid-state structural transformation was observed in copper(II) SCMs and we were able to isolate the intermediate form of the crystal-to-crystal transformation process. The luminescence experiments revealed that complexation enhanced the fluorescence properties of 4PNA in the zinc(II) and cadmium(II) SCMs, but a reverse phenomenon was observed in the copper(II) SCMs. This work demonstrated the tuning of supramolecular assembly in coordination compounds as a function of solvents for generating SCMs with diverse properties.

Photophysical and Chiroptical Properties of the Enantiomers of N,N'-Bis(1-phenylpropyl)-2,6-pyridinecarboxamide and their Chiral 9-Coordinate Ln3+ Complexes

The R,R and S,S enantiomers of N,N'-bis(1-phenylpropyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide, L(Et), react with Ln3+ ions (Ln = La, Eu, Gd, and Tb) to give stable [Ln((R,R)- and (S,S)-L(Et))3]3+ in anhydrous acetonitrile solution, as evidenced by various spectroscopic measurements, including NMR and luminescence titrations. In addition to the characteristic Eu3+ and Tb3+ luminescence bands, the steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectra of the aforementioned complexes show the residual ligand-centered emission of the 1ππ* to 3ππ* states, indicating an incomplete intersystem crossing (ISC) transfer from the 1ππ* to 3ππ* and ligand-to-Ln3+ energy transfer, respectively. The high circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity of [Eu(L(Et))3]3+ confirms that using a single enantiomer of L(Et) induces the preferential formation of one chiral [Eu(L(Et))3]3+ complex, consistent with the [EuL 3]3+ complexes formed with other ligands derived from a 2,6-pyridine dicarboxamide moiety. Furthermore, the CPL sign patterns of complexes with (R,R) or (S,S) enantiomer of L(Et) are consistent with the CPL sign pattern of related [LnL 3]3+ complexes with the (R,R) or (S,S) enantiomer of the respective ligands in this family.

Design of chiral Co(ii)-MOFs and their application in environmental remediation and waste water treatment

The present work reports construction of Co-MOFs with amide based bispyrazole ligand and different carboxylic acids which have potential applications in CO₂ adsorption and photocatalytic waste water treatment.

The btp [2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine] binding motif: a new versatile terdentate ligand for supramolecular and coordination chemistry

Ligands containing the btp [2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine] motif have appeared with increasing regularity over the last decade. This class of ligands, formed in a one pot ‘click’ reaction, has been studied for various purposes, such as for generating d and f metal coordination complexes and supramolecular self-assemblies, and in the formation of dendritic and polymeric networks, etc. This review article introduces btp as a novel and highly versatile terdentate building block with huge potential in inorganic supramolecular chemistry. We will focus on the coordination chemistry of btp ligands with a wide range of metals, and how it compares with other classical pyridyl and polypyridyl based ligands, and then present a selection of applications including use in catalysis, enzyme inhibition, photochemistry, molecular logic and materials, e.g. polymers, dendrimers and gels. The photovoltaic potential of triazolium derivatives of btp and its interactions with anions will also be discussed.

Healable luminescent self-assembly supramolecular metallogels possessing lanthanide (Eu/Tb) dependent rheological and morphological properties

Herein we present the use of lanthanide directed self-assembly formation (Ln(III) = Eu(III), Tb(III)) in the generation of luminescent supramolecular polymers, that when swelled with methanol give rise to self-healing supramolecular gels. These were analyzed by using luminescent and (1)H NMR titrations studies, allowing for the identification of the various species involved in the subsequent Ln(III)-gel formation. These highly luminescent gels could be mixed to give a variety of luminescent colors depending on their Eu(III):Tb(III) stoichiometric ratios. Imaging and rheological studies showed that these gels prepared using only Eu(III) or only Tb(III) have different morphological and rheological properties, that are also different from those determined upon forming gels by mixing of Eu(III) and Tb(III) gels. Hence, our results demonstrate for the first time the crucial role the lanthanide ions play in the supramolecular polymerization process, which is in principle a host-guest interaction, and consequently in the self-healing properties of the corresponding gels, which are dictated by the same host-guest interactions.

Self-assembly formation of a healable lanthanide luminescent supramolecular metallogel from 2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (btp) ligands

The self-assembly and rheological studies of self-healing Eu(iii) luminescent metallogels from a btp (2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine) ligand is described.

Quantifying the formation of chiral luminescent lanthanide assemblies in an aqueous medium through chiroptical spectroscopy and generation of luminescent hydrogels

Herein we present the synthesis and the photophysical evaluation of water-soluble chiral ligands (2·(R,R) and 2·(S,S)) and their application in the formation of lanthanide directed self-assembled structures. These pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic amide based ligands, possessing two naphthalene moieties as sensitising antennae, that can be used to populate the excited state of lanthanide ions, were structurally modified using 3-propanesultone and caesium carbonate, allowing for the incorporation of a water-solubilising sulfonate motif. We show, using microwave synthesis, that Eu(iii) forms chiral complexes in 1 : 3 (M : L) stoichiometries (Eu·[2·(R,R)]₃ and Eu·[2·(S,S)]₃) with these ligands, and that the red Eu(iii)-centred emission arising from these complexes has quantum yields (Φ_tot) of 12% in water. Both circular dichroism (CD) and circular polarised luminescence (CPL) analysis show that the complexes are chiral; giving rise to characteristic CD and CPL signatures for both the Λ and the Δ complexes, which both possess characteristic luminescence dissymmetry factors (g_lum), describing the structure in solution. The self-assembly process was also monitored in situ by observing the changes in the ligand absorption and fluorescence emission, as well as in the Eu(iii) luminescence. The change, fitted using non-linear regression analysis, demonstrated high binding affinity for Eu(iii) which in part can be assigned to being driven by additional hydrophobic effects. Moreover, using CD spectroscopy, the changes in the chiroptical properties of both (2·(R,R) and 2·(S,S)) were monitored in real time. Fitting the changes in the CD spectra allowed for the step-wise binding constants to be determined for these assemblies; these matched well with those determined from both the ground and the excited state changes. Both the ligands and the Eu(iii) complexes were then used in the formation of hydrogels; the Eu(iii)-metallogels were luminescent to the naked-eye.

The application of chiroptical spectroscopy (circular dichroism) in quantifying binding events in lanthanide directed synthesis of chiral luminescent self-assembly structures

The binding of asymmetrical and optically pure tridentate ligands containing one carboxylic group and 2-naphthyl as an antenna to lanthanide ions was studied in CH₃CN.

The binding of asymmetrical and optically pure tridentate ligands (L = 1(S) and 1(R)) containing one carboxylic group and 2-naphthyl as an antenna to lanthanide ions (M = La(iii) and Eu(iii)) was studied in CH₃CN, showing the successive formation of M:L, M:L₂ and M:L₃ stoichiometric species in solution. The europium complexes EuL₃ were also synthesised, structurally characterised and their photophysical properties probed in CH₃OH and CH₃CN. The changes in the chiroptical properties of both 1(S) and 1(R) were used (by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy) to monitor the formation of these chiral self-assemblies in solution. While circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) showed the formation of Eu(1(S))₃ and Eu(1(R))₃ as enantiomers, with high luminescence dissymmetry factors (g_lum), fitting the CD changes allowed for binding constants to be determined that were comparable to those seen in the analyses of absorbance and luminescence changes.

Recent Highlights in the use of Lanthanide-directed Synthesis of Novel Supramolecular (Luminescent) Self-assembly Structures such as Coordination Bundles, Helicates and Sensors

In this short review, we focus on the recent developments within the field of coordination chemistry where mono- or multimetallic supramolecular self-assemblies are formed by employing structurally defined organic ligands, taking advantage of the high coordination requirements of the lanthanides. Such synthesis results in the formation of both structurally complex and beautiful self-assemblies. Moreover, as the lanthanide ions possess both unique magnetic (e.g. GdIII and DyIII) and luminescent properties, either in the visible (EuIII, SmIII and TbIII) or near-infrared regions (YbIII, NdIII, ErIII), these physical features are usually transferred to the self-assemblies themselves, allowing the formation of highly functional structures, such as coordination networks, as well as molecular bundles and helicates. Hence, examples of the use of lanthanide-directed synthesis of luminescent sensors, some of which are formed on solid surfaces such as gold (flat surface or nanoparticles), and imaging agents are presented. Moreover, we demonstrate that by using chiral organic ligands, lanthanide-directed synthesis can also give rise to the formation of enantiomerically pure self-assemblies, the structure of which can be probed using circularly polarized luminescence.
