Abstract
Photochemical methods are increasingly being used in organic synthesis. They are especially useful for preparing many compounds that are not readily accessible through thermal or enzymatic reactions. The supramolecular strategy has proved highly promising in recent years for manipulating the stereochemical outcome of chiral photoreactions through relatively strong and long-lasting noncovalent interactions in both ground and excited states. Among the numerous chiral photochemical reactions, photocyclodimerization of 2-anthracenecarboxylate (AC) is the most comprehensively studied supramolecular chiral photoreaction and has essentially become a benchmark reaction for evaluating supramolecular photochirogenesis. Cyclodextrin (CD) derivatives were the earliest and are the most widely applied chiral host for mediating photoreactions. Herein, we use CD-mediated photocyclodimerization of AC as an example to introduce the operation process of supramolecular chiral photoreactions. The protocol includes the following contents: (i) the preparation, purification and characterization of β-CD derivatives; (ii) methods for investigating the host-guest inclusion behavior between AC and β-CD derivatives; (iii) the photochemical reaction operation flow under different solvent and temperature conditions; (iv) chiral high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses of the product distribution and enantioselectivity. The protocol is introduced by using representative examples of the synthesis of β-CD derivatives and the manipulation of environmental factors that give excellent regio- and enantioselectivities in the photocyclodimerization of AC. The synthesis and purification of β-CD derivatives require 3-5 d of work. The photoirradiation of AC with β-CD derivatives can be done within 1 h. The product analysis requires 5 h.

Abstract
Asymmetric catalysis is a major theme of research in contemporary synthetic organic chemistry. The discovery of general strategies for highly enantioselective photochemical reactions, however, has been a relatively recent development, and the variety of photoreactions that can be conducted in a stereocontrolled manner is consequently somewhat limited. Asymmetric photocatalysis is complicated by the short lifetimes and high reactivities characteristic of photogenerated reactive intermediates; the design of catalyst architectures that can provide effective enantiodifferentiating environments for these intermediates while minimizing the participation of uncontrolled racemic background processes has proven to be a key challenge for progress in this field. This review provides a summary of the chiral catalyst structures that have been studied for solution-phase asymmetric photochemistry, including chiral organic sensitizers, inorganic chromophores, and soluble macromolecules. While some of these photocatalysts are derived from privileged catalyst structures that are effective for both ground-state and photochemical transformations, others are structural designs unique to photocatalysis and offer insight into the logic required for highly effective stereocontrolled photocatalysis.

Abstract
Several sulfoxide- and sulfone-bridged β-cyclodextrin (CD) dimers were synthesized for mediating the enantiodifferentiating [4+4] photocyclodimerization of 2-anthracenecarboxylic acid (AC). The complexation behavior of these chiral hosts with AC was investigated by UV-vis, circular dichroism, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopies and certified the formation of 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 host-guest complexes. The product distribution and enantioselectivity of the photoreaction turned out to be a critical function of the chemical structure of bridged CDs. Comparing to the sulfur-bridged 2AX -3GX β-CD dimer 7, the conversion of the photolyzes with sulfoxide-bridged was significantly improved, and the ee of cyclodimer 2 was remarkably increased from -82.8% with 7 to -96.7% with the sulfoxide-bridged 2AX -3GX β-CD dimer 8. The relative yields and ee values of the slipped cyclodimers 5 and 6 were greatly enhanced in the presence of 6 M CsCl. The reaction selectivity is susceptible to the pH variation of the aqueous buffer solution, demonstrating that the supramolecular photochirogenesis is controlled by multidimensional factors, including the chemical structure of the chiral host, solvent, and pH conditions.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins are well known supramolecular hosts used in a wide range of applications. Monosubstitution of native cyclodextrins in the position C-6 of a glucose unit represents the simplest method how to achieve covalent binding of a well-defined host unit into the more complicated systems. These derivatives are relatively easy to prepare; that is why the number of publications describing their preparations exceeds 1400, and the reported synthetic methods are often very similar. Nevertheless, it might be very demanding to decide which of the published methods is the best one for the intended purpose. In the review, we aim to present only the most useful and well-described methods for preparing different types of mono-6-substituted derivatives. We also discuss the common problems encountered during their syntheses and suggest their optimal solutions.

Abstract
Bulk metals lack chirality. Recently, metals have been sculptured with metastable chirality varying from the micro- to nano-scale. The manipulation of molecular chirality could be novelly performed using metals composed of chiral lattices at atomic scales (i.e., chiral nanoparticles or CNPs) if one could fundamentally understand the interactions between molecules and the chiral metal lattices. The incorporation of chiral ligands has been generally adapted to form metal CNPs. However, post-fabrication removal of chiral ligands usually causes relaxation of the metastable chiral lattices to thermodynamically stable achiral structures, and thus the coexisting chiral ligands will unavoidably disturb or screen the interactions of interest. Herein, a concept of metal CNPs that are free of chiral ligands and consist of atomically chiral lattices is introduced. Without chiral ligands, shear forces applied by substrate rotation along with the translation of incident atoms lead to imposing the metastable chiral lattices onto metals. Metal CNPs show not only the chiroptical effect but the enantiospecific interactions of chiral lattices and molecules. These two unique chiral effects have resulted in the applications of enantiodifferentiation and asymmetric synthesis. Prospectively, the extension in composition space and constituent engineering will apply alloy CNPs to enantiodiscrimination, enantioseperation, bio-imaging, bio-sensing, and asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract
Tri-cavity hosts consisting of one pillar[5]arene (P5) sandwiched by two β-cyclodextrins (CDs) were synthesized, and their diastereoseparation was successfully accomplished. Photocyclodimerization of 2-anthracenecarboxylate with these hybrid hosts demonstrated the critical dependence of stereoselectivity on the absolute configuration of the central P5 and the conjugating positions on the β-CD, and gave the non-classical HT photodimers in up to 87% ee.

Abstract
Visible-light-driven photocatalytic supramolecular enantiodifferentiating dimerization of 2-anthracenecarboxylic acid (AC) through triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA), mediated by the Schiff base Pt(II) complex (Pt-1, Pt-2, and Pt-3) was studied. The host concentration and the temperature effects on the stereoselectivity were comprehensively investigated. Increasing the concentration of sensitizers/hosts significantly enhanced the conversion of the photoreaction but led to reduced enantioselectivities of the chiral photodimers 2 and 3 when the photoreaction was triggered by a 532 nm laser, which was in contrast with the results obtained by direct irradiation of AC with a 365 nm light-emitting diode (LED) lamp, due to the aggregation of the sensitizer/host in water. The cyclization of AC through triplet-triplet annihilation displayed significant temperature dependency when Pt-3 was employed as the sensitizer/host. Increasing the temperature from 0 °C to 30 °C with 5% equiv. of Pt-3 led to a great increase of the ee of 2 from 2.1% to 31.6%. However, hardly any temperature dependency was observed when the photodimerization was mediated by other sensitizers and/or hosts, or the photoreaction was triggered directly with a 365 nm LED lamp.

Abstract
A photo-responsive supramolecular assembly was successfully constructed through the stoichiometric 2 : 1 non-covalent association of two 4-(anthracen-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (1) units in one γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) cavity, followed by the subsequent coordination polymerization of the γ-CD·1 2 (1 2 = two 1) inclusion complex with Eu(iii). Interestingly, owing to the photodimerization behavior of anthracene units and the excellent luminescence properties of Eu(iii), the Eu3+⊂γ-CD·1 2 system showed multicolor fluorescence emission from cyan to red by irradiation for 0-16 minutes. Moreover, white light emission with CIE coordinates (0.32 and 0.36) was achieved at 4 min. Importantly, white light-containing multicolor emission could be obtained in water, solid films and living cells. Especially, the Eu3+⊂γ-CD·1 2 system could tag living cells with marvelous white fluorescence and display no obvious cytotoxicity. Thus, this supramolecular assembly offers a new pathway in the fields of tunable photochromic fluorescent ink and cell labelling.

Abstract
Mixing γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD), cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) and tetraammonium-bearing axles together led to a spontaneous formation of γ-CD-CB[6]-cowheeled [4]pseudorotaxanes. The well-defined unsymmetrical cavities thus formed enhance the binding affinity towards chiral amines by factors of several hundreds and show remarkably improved chiral discrimination.

Abstract
Chiral slipped 5,8:9',10'-cyclodimers were preferentially produced over classical 9,10:9',10'-cyclodimers upon supramolecular photocyclodimerization of 2-anthracenecarboxylate (AC) mediated by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). This photochirogenic route to the slipped cyclodimers, exclusively head-to-tail (HT) and highly enantioselective, has long been overlooked in foregoing studies but is dominant in reality and is absolutely supramolecularly activated by 2:2 complexation of AC with β-CD. The intricate structural and photophysical aspects of this higher-order complexation-triggered process have been comprehensively elucidated, while the absolute configurations of the slipped cyclodimers have been unambiguously assigned by comparing the experimental and theoretical circular dichroism spectra. In the 2:2 complex, two ACs packed in a dual β-CD capsule are not fully overlapped with each other but are only partially stacked in a slipped anti- or syn-HT manner. Hence, they do not spontaneously cyclodimerize upon photoexcitation but instead emit long-lived excimer fluorescence at wavelengths slightly longer than the monomer fluorescence, indicating that the slipped excimer is neither extremely reactive nor completely relaxed in conformation and energy. Because of the slipped conformation of the AC pair in the soft capsule, the subsequent photocyclodimerization becomes manipulable by various internal or external factors, such as temperature, pressure, added salt, and host modification, enabling us to exclusively obtain the slipped cyclodimers with high regio- and enantioselectivities. In this supramolecularly driven photochirogenesis, the dual β-CD capsule functions as a chiral organophotocatalyst to trigger and accelerate the nonclassical photochirogenic route to slipped cyclodimers by preorganizing the conformation of the encapsulated AC pair, formally mimicking a catalytic antibody.

Abstract
Supramolecular photochirogenesis is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary area of science at the boundary of photochemistry, asymmetric synthesis and supramolecular chemistry. The major advantage of supramolecular photochirogenesis over the conventional molecular one is entropic in origin, being achieved by preorganizing substrate(s) in the ground state and manipulating subsequent photochemical transformation by weak but non-transient interactions in chiral supramolecular media. The chirality transfer often becomes more efficient through the cooperative non-covalent interactions and the confinement by host in both ground and excited states. Thus, all of the ground- and excited-state events, including complexation stoichiometry and affinity, chiroptical properties, photophysical behaviour and photochemical reactivity, jointly play pivotal roles in supramolecular photochirogenesis. This may appear to cause complication but in reality expands the range of manipulable factors and available experimental/theoretical tools for elucidating the mechanism and controlling photochirogenic processes both thermodynamically and kinetically, from which some new concepts/methodologies unique to supramolecular photochemistry, such as non-sensitizing catalytic photochirogenesis and wavelength-controlled photochirogenesis, have already been developed. In this review, we will discuss the recent progress and future perspective of supramolecular photochirogenesis.

Abstract
The design of artificial catalysts able to compete with the catalytic proficiency of enzymes is an intense subject of research. Non-covalent interactions are thought to be involved in several properties of enzymatic catalysis, notably (i) the confinement of the substrates and the active site within a catalytic pocket, (ii) the creation of a hydrophobic pocket in water, (iii) self-replication properties and (iv) allosteric properties. The origins of the enhanced rates and high catalytic selectivities associated with these properties are still a matter of debate. Stabilisation of the transition state and favourable conformations of the active site and the product(s) are probably part of the answer. We present here artificial catalysts and biomacromolecule hybrid catalysts which constitute good models towards the development of truly competitive artificial enzymes.

Abstract
The conformational properties and aggregation behavior of two selectively modified cyclomaltooligosaccharides (cyclodextrins, CDs) containing a double-linked 1,8-dimethylnaphthalene cap-like moiety at the secondary face, namely, 2(I),3(I)-O-(1,8-dimetylnaphthalene-α,α'-diyl)-per-O-Me-α- and -γ-cyclodextrins (NmαCD and NmγCD, respectively), in water and in organic solvents were investigated. Both CD derivatives self-associated in water to form dimer species, but the characteristics of the dimerization process and of the resulting dimer strongly depended on the size of the macrocycle. Dimerization constants, thermodynamic parameters upon association, and information about the preferred conformations of the monomer and dimer CD structures were obtained by using NMR, UV-vis, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence, and circular dichroism experimental techniques, as well as molecular mechanics (MM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The complexation of 1,8-di(methoxymethyl)naphathalene (oNy) and the heteroassociation of both NmCDs with their permethylated CD partners (mCDs), lacking the aromatic cap, were examined. In addition, the influence of the size of the chromophore moiety on the thermodynamics of self-association was also assessed by comparison of the results obtained for the new naphthalene derivatives with those of the 2(I),3(I)-O-(1,2-xylylene)-modified CD analogues (XmCDs).

Abstract
Enantiodifferentiating geometrical photoisomerizations of (Z)-cyclooctene and (Z,Z)-1,3-cyclooctadiene were performed by using the pyromellitate-linked cyclodextrin network polymer, termed "cyclodextrin nanosponge (CDNS)", as a supramolecular sensitizing host. The photochirogenic behavior of the nanosponges incorporating β- or γ-cyclodextrin was significantly different from that reported for the conventional sensitizer-appended monomeric cyclodextrins, affording chiral (E)-cyclooctene and (E,Z)-cyclooctadiene in enantiomeric excesses critically dependent on the solution pH and solvent composition employed, revealing the active roles of chiral void spaces of CDNS in the photochirogenic reaction.
