Abstract
The solvothermal reaction of FeCl2 ⋅ 4H2O and H4TBC[4] in a basic dmf/EtOH solution affords an [FeIII 18] Keplerate conforming to a stellated cuboctahedron. Magnetic and heat capacity measurements reveal spin frustration effects arising from the high symmetry. A crossover between inverse and direct magnetocaloric effects is observed at ~10 K for applied-field changes lower than 3 T.

Abstract
Different combinations of organomagnesium reagents and zinc bromide react with either 1,3-dimethoxy-4-tert-butylcalix[4]areneH2 (L(OMe)2H2) or trialkoxycalix[4]arenes (L(OR)3H) (R = n-Pr, n-pentyl) to afford mixed-metal calix[4]arene systems. Intriguing molecular structures are formed and the systems are capable of the ring opening polymerisation of ε-caprolactone under N2, air, or as melts.

Abstract
Phosphate ester bonds are widely present in nature (e. g. DNA/RNA) and can be extremely stable against hydrolysis without the help of catalysts. Previously, we showed how the combination of phosphoryl and calix[4]arene moieties in the same organic framework (LPO ) allows isolation of single lanthanide (Ln) metal ions as [LnIII (LPO )2 ](O3 SCF3 )3 . Here we report how by controlling the reaction conditions a new hydrolyzed phosphoryl-calix[4]arene ligand (H3 LHPO ) is formed as a result of LnIII -mediated P-OEt bond cleavage in three out of the eight possible sites in LPO . The chelating nature of H3 LHPO traps the LnIII species in the form of [LnIII (LHPO )((EtO)2 P(O)OH)]2 dimers (Ln=La, Dy, Tb, Gd), where the Dy derivative shows slow magnetization relaxation. The strategy presented herein could be extended to access a broader library of hydrolyzed platforms (Hx LHPO ; x=1-8) that may represent mimics of nuclease enzymes.

Abstract
The reaction of MnCl2·4H2O, H8L (2,2'-bis-p-tBu-calix[4]arene) and NEt3 in a dmf/MeOH solvent mixture results in the formation of a mixed valent decametallic cluster of formula [MnII6MnIII4(L)2(μ3-OH)4(μ-OH)4(MeOH)4(dmf)4(MeCN)2]·MeCN (3). Complex 3 crystallises in the monoclinic space group P21/n with the asymmetric unit comprising half of the compound. Structure solution reveals that the bis-calix[4]arene ligands are arranged such that one TBC[4] moiety in each has undergone inversion in order to accommodate a [MnIII4MnII6] metallic skeleton that describes three vertex-sharing [MnIII2MnII2] butterflies. The structure is closely related to the species [MnIII6MnII4(L)2(μ3-O)2(μ3-OH)2(μ-OMe)4(H2O)4(dmf)8]·4dmf (4), the major difference being the oxidation level of the Mn ions in the core of the compound. DFT calculations on the full structures reveal that replacing the MnIII ions in 4 for MnII ions in 3 results in a significant decrease in the magnitude of some antiferromagnetic exchange contributions, a switch from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic in others, and the loss of significant spin frustration.

Abstract
The methylation of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene in the distal 1,3-phenolic sites provides the ligand H2L = {p-tert-butylcalix[4](OMe)2(OH)2arene} that enables construction of heteroleptic mononuclear lanthanide complexes. The reaction of (N(nBu)4)(acac) (Hacac = acetylacetone), MIIICl3 and H2L under Schlenk conditions results in the formation of a family of (N(nBu)4)[MIIIL(acac)2] complexes where M = Y (1), Gd (2), Tb (3) and Dy (4). The metal ions are eight-coordinate in distorted square-antiprismatic coordination geometries, resulting in slow relaxation of the magnetisation for the Tb derivative.

Abstract
Reaction of 2,2'-bis-p-tBu-calix[4]arene (H8L) with MnCl2·4H2O, GdCl3·6H2O and 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (H2pdm) affords [MnIIIMnIIGdIII(H3L)(pdmH)(pdm)(MeOH)2(dmf)]·3MeCN·dmf (3·3MeCN·dmf) upon vapour diffusion of MeCN into the basic dmf/MeOH mother liquor. 3 crystallises in the tetragonal space group P41212 with the asymmetric unit comprising the entire cluster. The highly unusual core contains a triangular arrangement of MnIIIMnIIGdIII ions housed within a [MnIIIMnIIGdIII(OR)4]4- partial cubane. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation data reveal best fit parameters JMn(II)-Mn(III) = +0.415 cm-1, JMn(III)-Gd(III) = +0.221 cm-1, JMn(II)-Gd(III) = -0.258 cm-1 and DMn(III) = -4.139 cm-1. Theoretically derived magnetic exchange interactions, anisotropy parameters, and magneto-structural correlations for 3 are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract
A new topological design of fluorescent probes for sensing copper ion is disclosed. The calix[4]arene-oxacyclophane (Calix-OCP) receptor, either wired-in-series in arylene-alt-ethynylene conjugated polymers or standing alone as a sole molecular probe, display a remarkable affinity and selectivity for Cu(II). The unique recognition properties of Calix-OCP system toward copper cation stem from its pre-organised cyclic array of O-ligands at the calixarene narrow rim, which is kept in a conformational rigid arrangement by a tethered oxacyclophane sub-unit. The magnitude of the binding constants (Ka = 5.30 - 8.52 × 104 M-1) and the free energy changes for the inclusion complexation (-ΔG = 27.0 - 28.1 kJmol-1), retrieved from fluorimetric titration experiments, revealed a high sensitivity of Calix-OCP architectures for Cu(II) species. Formation of supramolecular inclusion complexes was evidenced from UV-Vis spectroscopy. The new Calix-OCP-conjugated polymers (polymers 4 and 5), synthesized in good yields by Sonogashira-Hagihara methodologies, exhibit high fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF = 0.59 - 0.65). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to support the experimental findings. The fluorescence on-off behaviour of the sensing systems is tentatively explained by a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism.

Abstract
The macrocyclic ligand calix[4]arene (L1) and its sulphur-containing analogue thia[4]calixarene (L2) are promising precursors for functional molecular materials as they offer rational functionalization with various organic groups. Here, we present the first example of lanthanide-based coordination polymers built from the macrocyclic thiacalix[4]arene backbone bearing four carboxylic moieties, namely, ligand H4L3. The combination of H4L3 with the Tb3+ and Dy3+ cations led to the formation of 1D ladder-type coordination polymers with the formula [LnIIIHL3DMF3]·(DMF) (where DMF = dimethylformamide and Ln = Tb or Dy, denoted as HL3–Tb and HL3–Dy), which resulted from the coordination of the lanthanide cations with the partially deprotonated ligand HL33− that behaved as a T-shape connector. The coordination sphere around the metal was completed by the coordinated DMF solvent molecules. By combining both Tb3+ and Dy3+ cations, isostructural heterobimetallic solid solutions HL3–Tb1−xDyx were also prepared. HL3–Tb and HL3–Dy showed visible light photoluminescence originating from the f–f electronic transitions of pale green emissive Tb3+ and pale yellow emissive Dy3+ with efficient sensitization by the functionalized thia[4]calixarene ligand HL3. In the HL3–Tb1−xDyx solid solutions, the Tb/Dy ratio governed both the emission colour as well as the emission quantum yield, which reached even 28% at room temperature for HL3–Tb. Moreover, HL3–Dy exhibited a slow magnetic relaxation effect related to the magnetic anisotropy of the dodecahedral Dy3+ complexes, which were well isolated in the crystal lattice by expanded organic spacers. The single crystals of the two isostructural Tb3+- and Dy3+-based coordination polymers (HL3–Tb and HL3–Dy) were structurally characterized, and their photophysical properties were investigated, together with their corresponding solid solutions.![]()

Abstract
Calix[4]arenes (C[4]s) are versatile platforms for the construction of polymetallic clusters containing paramagnetic metal ions. Synthetic modification at the C[4] methylene bridge allows for the design of bis-C[4]s that, depending on the linker employed, can be used to either dictate which clusters can be formed or direct the assembly of a new metal-organic polyhedron (MOP). The assembly resulting from the latter approach displays thermal stability and uptake of N2 or H2 gas, confirming that this is a viable route to the synthesis of new, functional supramolecular architectures.

Abstract
Methylene-bridged calix[4]arenes have emerged as extremely versatile ligand supports in the formation of new polymetallic clusters possessing fascinating magnetic properties. Metal ion binding rules established for this building block allow one to partially rationalise the complex assembly process. The ability to covalently link calix[4]arenes at the methylene bridge provides significantly improved control over the introduction of different metal centres to resulting cluster motifs. Clusters assembled from bis-calix[4]arenes and transition metal ions or 3d-4f combinations display characteristic features of the analogous calix[4]arene supported clusters, thereby demonstrating an enhanced and rational approach towards the targeted synthesis of complex and challenging structures.

Abstract
The Schiff base ligand N1,N3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine (H(2)valdien) and the co-ligand 6-chloro-2-hydroxypyridine (Hchp) were used to construct two 3d-4f heterometallic single-ion magnets [Co(2) Dy(valdien)2 (OCH(3))(2) (chp)(2)]⋅ClO(4)⋅5 H(2)O 1 and [Co(2) Tb(valdien)(2) (OCH(3))(2)(chp)(2)]⋅ClO(4)⋅(2) H(2)O⋅CH(3)OH(2). The two trinuclear [Co(III) 2 Ln(III)] complexes behave as a mononuclear Ln(III) magnetic system because of the presence of two diamagnetic cobalt(III) ions. Complex 1 has a molecular symmetry center, and it crystallizes in the C2/c space group, whereas complex 2 shows a lower molecular symmetry and crystallizes in the P(2)1/c space group. Magnetic investigations indicated that both complexes are field-induced single-ion magnets, and the Co(III)(2)-Dy(III) complex possesses a larger energy barrier [74.1(4.2) K] than the Co(III)(2) -Tb(III) complex [32.3(2.6) K].

Abstract
Six new Fe–Ln clusters composed of a Fe12Ln4 core derived from two monocarboxylate ligands have been successfully obtained with a step-by-step strategy. Magnetic analyses suggest that 1–6 show different magnetic properties, and 2 and 6 display SMM-like behaviors.
