Interfacial Passivation Enormously Enhances Electroluminescence of Triphenylphosphine Cu4 I4 Cube

Defect is one of the key factors limiting optoelectronic performances of organic-inorganic hybrid systems. Although high-efficiency bidentate ligands based electroluminescent (EL) clusters reported, until present, only few EL clusters based on monodentate ligands are realized since their structural instability induces more surface/interface defects. Herein, this bottleneck is first overcome in virtue of interfacial passivation by electron transporting layers (ETL). Through using TmPyPB with meta-linked pyridines as ETL, photoluminescent (PL) and EL quantum efficiencies of the simplest monophosphine Cu4 I4 cube [TPP]4 Cu4 I4 are greatly improved by ≈2 and 23 folds, respectively, as well as ≈200 folds increased luminance, corresponding to a huge leap from nearly unlighted (<20 nits) to highly bright (>3000 nits). The passivation effect of TmPyPB on surface defects of cluster layer is embodied as preventing interfacial charge trapping and suppressing exciton nonradiation.

Emission and Luminescent Vapochromism Control of Octahedral Cu4 I4 Complexes by Conformationally Restricted P,N Ligands

A conformationally restricted P,N-ligand capable of the design of polynuclear copper(I) complexes was synthesized via the reaction of primary pyridylphosphine, paraformaldehyde, and benzhydrylamine. The reaction of the ligand with copper(I) iodide leads to the tetranuclear copper(I) complex with the octahedral type of copper-iodide core. Different orientation of coordination bonds of the ligands relative to the P,N₂ -heterocyclic fragments and to the Cu₄ I₄ cores leads to the existence of two types of conformers of the complex with "compact" or "stretched" geometry of the Cu₄ I₄ cluster. This lability of the complex allowed for obtaining two crystalline phases displaying green or red luminescence. The TDDFT computations along with XRD structural analysis gave a strong interpretation of the green emission belonging to the "compact" form of the complex and belonging of the red emission to the "stretched" form. Moreover, both crystalline phases demonstrate the strong vapochromic responses of luminescence on the vapors of wide range of solvents.

Silver-Rich Hybrid Framework Iodide Based on [Ag8I6]2+ Clusters Displays Low-Temperature Dual Emission and Luminescence Thermochromism

Cluster-based framework metal iodides have diverse structures and excellent luminescence properties, and show promising applications in sensing and solid-state lighting. However, the design and synthesis of these materials remain great challenges because excess I^- ions introduced into the synthesis systems decrease the condensation degree of M-I units. In this work, a new strategy is developed to control the condensation behavior of Ag-I units, and a new silver-rich cluster-based framework iodide [DabcoAg₈I₆(SPh)₂]_n (1) (Dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane) has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions in the presence of silver thiophenolate (AgSPh)_n. Compound 1 features a three-dimensional (3-D) cluster-based framework with a pillared layer structure composed of cationic [Ag₈I₆]²⁺ clusters bridged by SPh^- and Dabco, and displays low-temperature dual emission and luminescence thermochromism.

Pyrene-Based Fluorescent Porous Organic Polymers for Recognition and Detection of Pesticides

Eating vegetables with pesticide residues over a long period of time causes serious adverse effects on the human body, such as acute poisoning, chronic poisoning, and endocrine system interference. To achieve the goal of a healthy society, it is an urgent issue to find a simple and effective method to detect organic pesticides. In this work, two fluorescent porous organic polymers, LNU-45 and LNU-47 (abbreviation for Liaoning University), were prepared using π-conjugated dibromopyrene monomer and boronic acid compounds as building units through a Suzuki coupling reaction. Due to the large π-electron delocalization effect, the resulting polymers revealed enhanced fluorescence performance. Significantly, in sharp contrast with the planar π-conjugated polymer framework (LNU-47), the distorted conjugated structure (LNU-45) shows a higher specific surface area and provides a broad interface for analyte interaction, which is helpful to achieve rapid response and detection sensitivity. LNU-45 exhibits strong fluorescence emission at 469 nm after excitation at 365 nm in THF solution, providing strong evidence for its suitability as a luminescent chemosensor for organic pesticides. The fluorescence quenching coefficients of LNU-45 for trifluralin and dicloran were 5710 and 12,000 (LNU-47 sample by ca. 1.98 and 3.38 times), respectively. Therefore, LNU-45 serves as an effective "real-time" sensor for the detection of trifluralin and dicloran with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Two 6/10-connected Cu12S6 cluster-based organic frameworks: crystal structure and proton conduction

Nowadays, although the exploration of proton conductive materials has ranged from traditional sulfonated polymers to novel crystalline solid materials such as MOFs, COFs, and HOFs, research on crystalline cluster-based organic framework materials is very limited. Here, a pair of homologues Cu(i)-based organic framework containing a Cu12S6 cluster, [Cu12(MES)6(H2O)3]n (1) and {[Cu12(MPS)6(H2O)4]·6H2O}n (2) (H2MES = 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate acid and H2MPS = 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate acid), were hydrothermally synthesized under the same conditions and fully investigated for their proton conduction. Their structures were characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analyses, and PXRD measurements. The two MOFs show significant structural differences in the topological fashions. MOF 1 has a three-dimensional network and can be simplified into two topology types: a 10-connected gpu structure with a Schläfli symbol (312·426·57) and a 3,12-connected new topology with a point symbol {3·42}2{310·418·519·614·74·9}. MOF 2 also has a three-dimensional framework and topology as a 6-connected pcu primitive cubic network with a Schläfli symbol {412·63}. The two MOFs show different proton conduction parameters, but both indicate temperature-dependent proton conductive features. Intriguingly, the two MOFs exhibit high water stability and their proton conductivities are 3.63 × 10-5 and 2.75 × 10-5 S cm-1 under 333 K and 98% RH, respectively. The suggested mechanism for the synthesis for 1 and 2, and their proton conductivity performance comparison has been discussed in detail. In addition, Hirshfeld surface and fingerprint analysis on the two MOFs were computed to compare contacts between the molecules, which is essential for analyzing the relationships between their hydrogen bonds and proton conductivity properties.

Four new Cu6S6 cluster-based coordination compounds: synthesis, crystal structures and fluorescence properties

A hexagonal prismatic Cu₆S₆ cluster exhibits excellent near-infrared fluorescence properties due to its short Cu-Cu bonds, however, the construction of Cu₆S₆ cluster-based compounds with extended structures is still a challenge. Here, four new Cu₆S₆ cluster-based coordination compounds, formulated as Cu₃(pymt)₃ (1), {(CuCN)₂[Cu₃(mpymt)₃]}_n (2), {(CuSCN)[Cu₃(mpymt)₃]}_n (3) and {(CuCN)₂[Cu₃(dmpymt)₃]·CH₃CN}_n (4) (Hpymt = pyrimidine-2-thiolate, Hmpymt = 4-methyl-pyrimidine-2-thione and Hdmpymt = 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine-2-thione), have been synthesized through the reactions of mercaptopyrimidine derivatives and CuCN or CuSCN under solvo-thermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 is a zero-dimensional Cu₆(pymt)₆ molecule containing a distorted pseudo-hexagonal prismatic Cu₆S₆ core. Compounds 2 and 4 with isomorphic frameworks but different organic linkers show a rare three-dimensional framework with nor topology constructed from Cu₆(mpymt)₆ units and one-dimensional chiral [Cu(CN)]_n chains; compared with compound 2, a more hydrophobic one-dimensional channel in compound 4 is observed due to the increase of the methyl groups on the pyrimidine ligand, in which acetonitrile molecules are filled in the channels of compound 4. Compound 3 shows a rare two-dimensional layer constructed from Cu₆(mpymt)₆ units and one-dimensional puckered (CuSCN)_n chains. For the first time, Cu₆S₆ clusters are connected to one-dimensional inorganic CuCN (or CuSCN) chains through mercaptopyrimidine derivatives to obtain extended arrays in compounds 2-4. The crystals of compounds 1-4 in the solid state all show apparent red light emission. Compound 4 shows sensitive luminescence quenching response to nitrobenzene (NB), and the corresponding quenching constant (K_sv) and detection limit are 2.06 × 10³ M^-1 and 9.27 ppm, respectively. This study provides a new strategy to construct Cu₆S₆ cluster-based coordination polymers that have great potential in various applications such as luminescence sensing.

Luminescent polymorphic aggregates of trinuclear Cu(I)-pyrazolate tuned by intertrimeric CuNPy weak coordination bonds

Five luminescent polymorphic aggregates of trinuclear Cu(i)-pyrazolate, namely [anti-Cu3L3]2 (1), [syn-Cu3L3·C2H5OH]2 (2), [anti-Cu3L3·C2H5OH]n (3), [anti-Cu3L3·0.5C7H8]n (4) and [syn-Cu3L3·C8H10]n (5) (HL = 4-(pyridin-4-ylthio)-3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole), were reported. The trimeric Cu3L3 fragments present syn- and anti-conformations dependent on the dangled direction of 4-pyridyl groups on the two sides of the Cu3Pz3 plane (Pz = pyrazolate). Intertrimeric NPyCu weak coordination bonds associate these Cu3L3 fragments together to form dimeric or polymeric structures, which are further stabilized by crystallized solvent molecules or intertrimeric CuCu interactions. The solvated complexes (3-5) may be transformed into the unsolvated complex 1 by evacuation of the crystallized solvents upon heating. All these complexes emit from green to yellow under UV irradiation, which originated from the triplet excited states of metal to ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) mixed with intertrimeric CuCu interactions. This work provides a novel kind of supramolecular aggregate based on Cu3Pz3 beyond the classical π-acidbase adducts and metallophilicity-dependent dimers/oligomers.

Pressure-induced phosphorescence enhancement and piezochromism of a carbazole-based cyclic trinuclear Cu(i) complex

Interest in piezochromic luminescence has increased in recent decades, even though it is mostly limited to pure organic compounds and fluorescence. In this work, a Cu3Pz3 (Cu3, Pz: pyrazolate) cyclic trinuclear complex (CTC) with two different crystalline polymorphs, namely 1a and 1b, was synthesized. The CTC consists of two functional moieties: carbazole (Cz) chromophore and Cu3 units. In crystals of 1a, discrete Cz-Cu3-Cu3-Cz stacking was found, showing abnormal pressure-induced phosphorescence enhancement (PIPE), which was 12 times stronger at 2.23 GPa compared to under ambient conditions. This novel observation is ascribed to cooperation between heavy-atom effects (i.e., from Cu atoms) and metal-ligand charge-transfer promotion. The infinite π-π stacking of Cz motifs was observed in 1b and it exhibited good piezochromism as the pressure increased. This work demonstrates a new concept in the design of piezochromic materials to achieve PIPE via combining organic chromophores and metal-organic phosphorescence emitters.

Visible-light excited luminescent trigonal prismatic metallocages from a template-directed assembly

Trigonal prismatic metallocages based on Cu₃Pz₃ and Cu₂I₂/Cu₂Br₂ with 24-component were assembled via a template-directed strategy. They showed rare visible-light responsive red emissions based on Cu₂I₂/Cu₂Br₂ coordination chromophores.

Luminescent Thermochromic Silver Iodides as Wavelength-Dependent Thermometers

Luminescent thermochromic materials with a dramatic shift of emission band under different temperatures are highly desirable in temperature sensing fields. However, the design of the synthesis of such compounds remains a great challenge. In this work, two new luminescent thermochromic silver iodides, (emIm)Ag₃I₄ (1) and (emIm)Ag₂I₃ (2) (emIm = 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazole), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a [Ag₃I₄]^- anionic layer, while compound 2 possesses an infinite [Ag₂I₃]^- chain structure, both of which are charge balanced by emIm⁺ cations. Particularly, they display luminescent thermochromism with a significant wavelength shift of emission maximum with temperature change. They represent rare examples of infinite layered or chain silver iodides that show luminescent thermochromism. Furthermore, the results indicate that compounds 1 and 2 are promising wavelength-dependent luminescent thermometers.

Coinage-Metal-Based Cyclic Trinuclear Complexes with Metal-Metal Interactions: Theories to Experiments and Structures to Functions

Among the d¹⁰ coinage metal complexes, cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTCs) or trinuclear metallocycles with intratrimer metal-metal interactions are fascinating and important metal-organic or organometallic π-acids/bases. Each CTC of characteristic planar or near-planar trimetal nine-membered rings consists of Au(I)/Ag(I)/Cu(I) cations that linearly coordinate with N and/or C atoms in ditopic anionic bridging ligands. Since the first discovery of Au(I) CTC in the 1970s, research of CTCs has involved several fundamental areas, including noncovalent and metallophilic interaction, excimer/exciplex, acid-base chemistry, metalloaromaticity, supramolecular assemblies, and host/guest chemistry. These allow CTCs to be embraced in a wide range of innovative potential applications that include chemical sensing, semiconducting, gas and liquid adsorption/separation, catalysis, full-color display, and solid-state lighting. This review aims to provide a historic and comprehensive summary on CTCs and their extension to higher nuclearity complexes and coordination polymers from the perspectives of synthesis, structure, theoretical insight, and potential applications.

A supersalt-type copper(i)-thiolate cluster with applications for mechano/thermochromism and the oxygen evolution reaction

A new copper(i)-thiolate (Cu-S) cluster with a CsCl unit (1, [Cu₁₂(μ₄-SCH₃)₆(NH₃)₁₂][Cu₁₂(μ₄-SCH₃)₆Cl₁₂]) exhibited interesting mechanochromic and thermochromic luminescence properties. Additionally, heteroatom-rich 1 could also be used as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media. The supersalt-type Cu-S cluster for the first time realized mechano/thermochromic and electrocatalytic applications.

Constructing multi-cluster copper(i) halides using conformationally flexible ligands

Conformationally flexible ligands were used to trap various Cu(i)-halide clusters in one system to obtain multi-cluster copper(i)-halides with distinctive temperature-dependent luminescence.

"Quick-Silver" from a Systematic Study of Highly Luminescent, Two-Coordinate, d10 Coinage Metal Complexes

A systematic study is presented on the physical and photophysical properties of isoelectronic and isostructural Cu, Ag, and Au complexes with a common amide (N-carbazolyl) and two different carbene ligands (i.e., CAAC = (5 R,6 S)-2-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-6-isopropyl-3,3,9-trimethyl-2-azaspiro[4.5]decan-2-ylidene, MAC = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-5,5-dimethyl-4-keto-tetrahydropyridylidene). The crystal structures of the (carbene)M^(I)(N-carbazolyl) (M^CAAC) and (MAC)M^(I)(N-carbazolyl) (M^MAC) complexes show coplanar carbene and carbzole ligands and C-M-N bond angles of ∼180°. The electrochemical properties and energies for charge transfer (CT) absorption and emission compounds are not significantly affected by the choice of metal ion. All six of the (carbene)M(Cz) complexes examined here display high photoluminescence quantum yields of 0.8-1.0. The compounds have short emission lifetimes (τ = 0.33-2.8 μs) that fall in the order Ag < Au < Cu, with the lifetimes of (carbene)Ag(Cz) roughly a factor of 10 shorter than for (carbene)Cu(Cz) complexes. Detailed temperature-dependent photophysical measurements (5-325 K) were carried out to determine the singlet and triplet emission lifetimes (τ_fl and τ_ph, respectively) and the energy difference between the singlet and triplet excited state, Δ E_S1-T1. The τ_fl values range between 20 and 85 ns, and the τ_ph values are in the 50-200 μs regime. The emission at room temperature is due exclusively to E-type delayed fluorescence or TADF (i.e., T1→ΔS1→S0+hν ). The emission rate at room temperature is fully governed by Δ E_S1-T1, with the silver complexes giving Δ E_S1-T1 values of 150-180 cm^-1 (18-23 meV), whereas the gold and copper complexes give values of 570-590 cm^-1 (70-73 meV).

The π-acidity/basicity of cyclic trinuclear units (CTUs): from a theoretical perspective to potential applications

Cyclic trinuclear units (CTUs) based on Au(i), Ag(i) and Cu(i) cations, featuring near planar nine-membered coordination rings, represent an important class of metal-organic π-acids/bases with highly adjustable π-acidity/basicity. Their superior π-acidity/basicity coupled with Lewis-acidic and metalmetal bonding sites offers excellent attraction for a wide range of acidic/basic species, and usually followed by noticeable changes of luminescence or charge transfer behaviors. A series of representative cases from the past two decades have been selected herein for such cyclic trinuclear units in both oligomeric and polymeric systems. Their fascinating and profound potential applications related to π-acidity/basicity are highlighted, including molecular absorption and separation, luminescence sensing and detection, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), metal-organic field-effect transistors (MOFETs), molecular wires, and catalysis. The challenges in improving the performance for practical application will also be discussed.

Photoluminescent Phosphinine Cu(I) Halide Complexes: Temperature Dependence of the Photophysical Properties and Applications as a Molecular Thermometer

Luminescent thermometers have attracted much attention, because of their fast response, high sensitivity, and noninvasive operation, relative to other traditional thermometers. The extensive studies on the temperature-dependent luminescent properties of Cu(I) complexes make this low-cost metal source a promising candidate as a component of thermometers. Herein, we prepared three luminescent phosphinine Cu(I) complexes whose emission lifetimes are precisely dependent on the temperature variations. For practical utilization, sensor films have been fabricated by doping these Cu(I) complexes into the matrices of polyacrylamide. These films not only exhibit excellent linear correlations between the temperature and emission lifetime over the wide range of 77-337 K, but also show high sensitivity (with the best one to -6.99 μs K^-1). These are essential factors for the application in luminescent molecular thermometers. Moreover, the emission mechanism for these Cu(I) complexes are rationalized by the combination of experimental and theoretical results.

Hydrosoluble Cu(i)-DAPTA complexes: synthesis, characterization, luminescence thermochromism and catalytic activity for microwave-assisted three-component azide-alkyne cycloaddition click reaction

New hydrosoluble and air-stable Cu(i) halide compounds, viz. [CuX(DAPTA)3] (1) and (2), and [Cu(μ-X)(DAPTA)2]2 (3) and (4) (X = Br or I, in this order), have been prepared by reacting Cu(i) halide (i.e., bromide or iodide) with 3,7-diacetyl-1,3,7-triaza-5-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (DAPTA) under mild conditions. They represent the first examples of Cu(i) halide complexes bearing the DAPTA ligand, which have been fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H, 13C{1H} and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopies, ESI-MS+ and, for 4, also by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses. Complexes 1-4 are efficient catalysts for the one-pot microwave assisted three-component (terminal alkyne, organic halide and NaN3) Huisgen cycloaddition reaction in aqueous media to afford the corresponding disubstituted triazoles. The catalysis proceeds with a broad alkyne substrate scope and according to "click rules". Photophysical studies of compound 4 showed an unusual reversible thermochromic behaviour exhibiting a blue emission at 298 K due to the halide-to-ligand charge transfer (3XLCT) and a red emission at 77 K because of the {Cu2I2} unit.

Evaluation of Ligands Effect on the Photophysical Properties of Copper Iodide Clusters

Luminescent materials based on copper complexes are currently receiving increasing attention because of their rich photophysical properties, opening a wide field of applications. The copper iodide clusters formulated [Cu₄I₄L₄] (L = ligand), are particularly relevant for the development of multifunctional materials based on their luminescence stimuli-responsive properties. In this context, controlling and modulating their photophysical properties is crucial and this can only be achieved by thorough understanding of the origin of the optical properties. We thus report here, the comparative study of a series of cubane copper iodide clusters coordinated by different phosphine ligands, with the goal of analyzing the effect of the ligands nature on the photoluminescence properties. The synthesis, structural, and photophysical characterizations along with theoretical investigations of copper iodide clusters with ligands presenting different electronic properties, are described. A method to simplify the analysis of the ³¹P solid-state NMR spectra is also reported. While clusters with electron-donating groups present classical luminescence properties, the cluster bearing strong electron-withdrawing substituents exhibits original behavior demonstrating a clear influence of the ligands properties. In particular, the electron-withdrawing character induces a decrease in energy of the unoccupied molecular orbitals, that consequently impacts the emission properties. The modification of the luminescence thermochromic properties of the clusters are supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study demonstrates that the control of the luminescence properties of these compounds can be achieved through modification of the coordinated ligands, nevertheless the role of the crystal packing should not be underestimated.

A pillared-layered copper(i) halide-based metal–organic framework exhibiting dual emission, and piezochromic and thermochromic properties with a large temperature-dependent emission red-shift

We report a new copper halide-based compound [Cu₆I₆Br₂C₁₆H₃₂N₄] (1) with a 3D 2-fold interpenetrated framework structure. Upon excitation at 290 nm and 350 nm, compound 1 shows dual emission at ca. 500 nm and ca. 530 nm. As the temperature decreased from 300 K down to 6 K, the luminescent properties of compound 1 show large red shifts of 120 nm and 72 nm, respectively.

A luminescent supramolecular Cu2I2(NH3)2-sandwiched Cu3(pyrazolate)3 adduct as a temperature sensor

A highly luminescent supramolecular Cu₂I₂(NH₃)₂-sandwiched Cu₃(pyrazolate)₃ π-acid⋯base adduct, stabilized by intermolecular Cu₃⋯I (π-acid⋯base), Cu⋯Cu and N⋯H interactions, is reported as a temperature sensor in a wide range.
