Theoretical Study on the Structures, Electronic Properties, and Aromaticity of Thiophene Analogues of Anti-Kekulene

We predict the geometries, electronic properties, and aromaticity of thiophene analogues of anti-kekulene with six to nine thiophene rings 1–4, together with those of cyclobutadithiophenes (CDTs) and anti-kekulene as reference compounds, using density functional theory calculations. Investigation of the simplest reference compounds, CDTs, reveals that the local aromaticity of their thiophene rings is influenced by their fused position (b- or c-bond) to the four-membered ring (4MR). A thiophene ring fused at the b-position (b-TR) retains its aromatic character to some extent, whereas the aromatic character of one fused at the c-position is attenuated. The 4MR with two fused b-TRs retains a strong anti-aromatic character. Thiophene analogues of anti-kekulene with six to eight thiophene rings 1–3 favor bowl-shaped structures, in contrast to the planar structure of anti-kekulene, because of the shorter distances of the sulfur bridges. Compound 4, with nine thiophene rings, adopts a planar structure. The local aromaticity and anti-aromaticity of the thiophene ring and 4MR are significantly attenuated in 1–4 compared with the reference compounds, the CDTs and anti-kekulene. This can be attributed to the considerable contribution of the quinoidal electronic structure in 1–4. The present study provides new insight into the aromatic and electronic nature of systems containing cyclobutadienothiophene.

Theoretical study of electronic and nonlinear optical properties of novel graphenylene-based materials with donor-acceptor frameworks

A new functionalized graphenylene-based structure was designed by adsorbing of alkali metals M₃ and superalkali M₃O (M = Li, Na, K) on graphenylene (BPC) surface. The spectral data show that the spectral properties of the M₃O@BPC system are very similar because the two-dimensional material plays a major role in the main transition. However, for M₃@BPC system, the spectral shapes of the three systems show significant changes compared to each other because the different alkali metals play a major role in the main transition process. The calculation results show that the introduction of superalkali does not significantly increase the first polarizability; however, the introduction of alkali metals can obtain considerable nonlinear optical materials. For M₃@BPC system, the first hyperpolarizability increases significantly when heavier alkali metal is introduced into the two-dimensional structure, which is found to be 866,290.9 au for K₃@ BPC. A two-level model and first hyperpolarizability density can explain the large first polarizability of these systems.

Chemisorption-Induced Formation of Biphenylene Dimer on Ag(111)

We report an example that demonstrates the clear interdependence between surface-supported reactions and molecular-adsorption configurations. Two biphenyl-based molecules with two and four bromine substituents, i.e., 2,2'-dibromobiphenyl (DBBP) and 2,2',6,6'-tetrabromo-1,1'-biphenyl (TBBP), show completely different reaction pathways on a Ag(111) surface, leading to the selective formation of dibenzo[e,l]pyrene and biphenylene dimer, respectively. By combining low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, we unravel the underlying reaction mechanism. After debromination, a biradical biphenyl can be stabilized by surface Ag adatoms, while a four-radical biphenyl undergoes spontaneous intramolecular annulation due to its extreme instability on Ag(111). Such different chemisorption-induced precursor states between DBBP and TBBP consequently lead to different reaction pathways after further annealing. In addition, using bond-resolving scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we determine with atomic precision the bond-length alternation of the biphenylene dimer product, which contains 4-, 6-, and 8-membered rings. The 4-membered ring units turn out to be radialene structures.

Symmetry and Combinatorial Concepts for Cyclopolyarenes, Nanotubes and 2D-Sheets: Enumerations, Isomers, Structures Spectra & Properties

This review article highlights recent developments in symmetry, combinatorics, topology, entropy, chirality, spectroscopy and thermochemistry pertinent to 2D and 1D nanomaterials such as circumscribed-cyclopolyarenes and their heterocyclic analogs, carbon and heteronanotubes and heteronano wires, as well as tessellations of cyclopolyarenes, for example, kekulenes, septulenes and octulenes. We establish that the generalization of Sheehan’s modification of Pólya’s theorem to all irreducible representations of point groups yields robust generating functions for the enumeration of chiral, achiral, position isomers, NMR, multiple quantum NMR and ESR hyperfine patterns. We also show distance, degree and graph entropy based topological measures combined with techniques for distance degree vector sequences, edge and vertex partitions of nanomaterials yield robust and powerful techniques for thermochemistry, bond energies and spectroscopic computations of these species. We have demonstrated the existence of isentropic tessellations of kekulenes which were further studied using combinatorial, topological and spectral techniques. The combinatorial generating functions obtained not only enumerate the chiral and achiral isomers but also aid in the machine construction of various spectroscopic and ESR hyperfine patterns of the nanomaterials that were considered in this review. Combinatorial and topological tools can become an integral part of robust machine learning techniques for rapid computation of the combinatorial library of isomers and their properties of nanomaterials. Future applications to metal organic frameworks and fullerene polymers are pointed out.

Topological Characterization and Graph Entropies of Tessellations of Kekulene Structures: Existence of Isentropic Structures and Applications to Thermochemistry, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and Electron Spin Resonance

Tessellations of kekulenes and cycloarenes are of considerable interest as nanomolecular belts in trapping and transportation of heavy metal ions and chloride ions, as they possess optimal electronic features and pore sizes. A class of cycloarenes called kekulenes have been the focus of several experimental and theoretical studies from the stand point of aromaticity, superaromaticity, chirality, and novel electrical and magnetic properties. In the present study, we investigate the entropies and topological characterization of different tessellations of kekulenes through topological computations of superaromatic structures with pores. We introduce the self-powered vertex degree-based topological indices and then derive the graph entropy measures for three different tessellations (zigzag, armchair, and rectangular) via various molecular descriptors that we derive here. Several applications to computing the molecular properties are pointed out. We demonstrate the existence of isentropic and yet nonisomorphic tessellations of kekulenes for the first time. The two tessellations are predicted to be quite close in energy with comparable energy gaps. Graph theory-based PPP methods with parameters derived from higher levels of theory are proposed to be promising tools for the predictions of relative stabilities of kekulene tessellations. We show that the developed techniques can be applied in the general context of artificial intelligence for the machine generation of nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance spectroscopic patterns as well as in robust computations of thermochemistry of a large combinatorial libraries of tessellations of kekulenes through the generation of bond-equivalence classes.

Extension and Quantification of the Fries Rule and Its Connection to Aromaticity: Large-Scale Validation by Wave-Function-Based Resonance Analysis

The Fries rule is a simple, intuitive tool to predict the most dominant Kekulé structures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which is valuable for understanding the structure, stability, reactivity, and aromaticity of these conjugated compounds. However, it still remains an empirical hypothesis, with limited qualitative applications. Herein, we verify, generalize, and quantify the Fries rule based on the recently developed resonance analysis of the DFT wave functions of over 1500 PAH and fullerene molecules with over a billion Kekulé structures. The extended rules, counting the numbers of electrons within all rings (not just sextets), are able to rank the relative importance of all Kekulé structures for all considered systems. The statistically meaningful quantification also opens a way to evaluate ring aromaticity based on the resonance theory, which generally agrees well with conventional aromaticity descriptors. Furthermore, we propose a purely graph-based aromaticity indicator nicely applicable to PAHs and fullerenes, with no need of any quantum chemistry calculations, so that it can make valuable predictions for molecular properties that are related to local aromaticity.

Graphenylene and inorganic graphenylene nanopores for gas-phase 4He/3He separation: kinetic and steady-state considerations

Selective membrane-based separation of light isotopes is considered to be possible based on the quantum phenomena. In this regard, the role of two mass-dependent effects, quantum tunneling and zero-point energy (ZPE), is realized to be consequential for selective separation of helium isotopes using appropriate membranes. In the present study, the efficiency of two analogous nanoporous membranes, graphenylene (GP) and inorganic graphenylene (IGP), for gas phase separation of 3He and 4He has been theoretically investigated. Since the performance of the studied membranes is extremely influenced by the close competition between both quantum tunneling and zero-point energy (ZPE) effects, high precision in the calculations is required to provide more realistic theoretical predictions. The current study attempts to provide such predictions by applying domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled cluster theory (DLPNO-CCSD) to obtain the accurate helium-pore interaction potential, based on which the tunneling rates, as well as the exact (anharmonic) bound levels for the vibration of helium in the pore plane, are calculated. From the analysis of the obtained results, the performance of the GP and IGP nanopores has been investigated in both kinetic competition and steady-state conditions in the temperature range of 10-200 K. The results of this study indicate that harmonic oscillator approximation significantly overestimates the efficiency of the studied nanopores for helium isotope separation. Based on our accurate calculations, both GP and IGP nanopores provide almost similar selectivities in kinetic competition conditions (Stot4/3 ≈ 3 at T = 50 K); however, the predicted permeance for GP (10-8 mol m-2 s-1 bar-1) is about 100 times higher than that predicted for IGP under the same conditions. Under steady-state conditions, IGP has been shown to be more efficient than GP, since it provides acceptable values of separation factor at higher temperatures.

Single-atom metal-modified graphenylene as a high-activity catalyst for CO and NO oxidation

Herein, the adsorption behaviors and interactions of different gas species on single-metal atom-anchored graphenylene (M–graphenylene, M = Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) sheets were investigated by first-principles calculations.

Electrostatic Topographical Viewpoint of π-Conjugation and Aromaticity of Hydrocarbons

A molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) topographical study has been conducted for a variety of conjugated hydrocarbons at B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory to understand their π-conjugation features and aromaticity. The value of MESP minimum (V_m) is related to the localized and delocalized distribution of π-electron density. The V_m values are located interior to the rings in polycyclic benzenoid hydrocarbons (PBHs), whereas they lie outside the boundary of the rings in antiaromatic and in fused systems consisting of aromatic and antiaromatic moieties. The V_m points lie on top and bottom of the π-regions in linear polyenes and annulenes, while a degenerate distribution of CPs around the midpoint region of triple bonds is observed in alkynes. The eigenvalues λ₁, λ₂, and λ₃ of the Hessian matrix at V_m(MESP minima) are used to define the aromatic character of the cyclic structures. The eigenvalues follow the trend λ₁ ≫ λ₂ > λ₃ ≅ 0 in PBHs, λ₁ > λ₂ > λ₃ ≅ 0 in linear polyenes, and λ₁ > λ₂ > λ₃ ≠ 0 in antiaromatic systems. The difference in the aromatic character of PBHs from that of benzene is related to the deviations Δλ₁, Δλ₂, and Δλ₃. The total deviation ∑_i=1³Δλ_i is found to be ≤ 0.011 au for all aromatic systems and lies between 0.011 and 0.035 au for all nonaromatic systems. For antiaromatic systems, its value is found to be above 0.035 au. Further, ∑_i=1³Δλ_i gives a direct interpretation of Clar's aromatic sextet structures for PBHs. In summary, MESP topography mapping is a powerful technique to quantify the localized and delocalized π-electron distribution in a variety of unsaturated hydrocarbon systems.

Theoretical Study on the Geometry, Aromaticity, and Electronic Properties of Benzo[3,4]cyclobutathiophenes and Their Homologues

The geometry, aromaticity, and electronic properties of benzo[3,4]cyclobutathiophenes (BCTs) and their homologues have been examined theoretically using density functional theory calculations. The harmonic oscillator measure of aromaticity and nucleus-independent chemical shift analyses revealed the aromaticity characteristics of the two regioisomers benzo[3,4]cyclobuta[1,2-b]thiophene and benzo[3,4]cyclobuta[1,2-c]thiophene. When the aromaticity of one of the six-π-electron rings increases, it concomitantly decreases in the other ring. The anti-aromaticity of the four-membered ring varies depending on the π-electron density of the shared bond with the thiophene ring. This leads to a large difference of the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap between the isomers. Linear BCT homologues show medium diradical characters and the smallest E_Gap values. In the angular and branched homologues, the π-electrons of central benzene rings are localized avoiding the shared bonds, which results in a nonaromatic character. These data were compared to those of the parent hydrocarbons. Because of the diene character of the thiophene ring, the number and position of annulated thiophenocyclobutadieno moieties significantly influence the aromaticity and E_Gap values of BCT homologues. The present study does not only provide insight into the aromaticity and the properties of organic compounds containing four-membered rings but also affords helpful design guidelines of novel organic semiconductors.

Combinatorial Enumeration of Isomers of Superaromatic Polysubstituted Cycloarenes and Coronoid Hydrocarbons with Applications to NMR

We have employed combinatorial techniques based on character cycle indices, Pólya's theory, and Euler totem function to enumerate isomers of polysubstituted cycloarenes and coronoid hydrocarbons which have been receiving considerable attention because of their superaromaticity, ring currents, and interesting magnetic properties. Systematic enumeration and construction of tables of polysubstituted isomers such as fluoro-chloro superaromatic hydrocarbons are considered as they are of interest in the study of environmental pollutants and toxicity. Isomers of fluoro-chloro polysubstituted donut shaped circumkekulenes, circumseptulenes, circumoctulenes, etc., are enumerated in addition to other cycloarenes, polycyclic circumcoronaphenes and coronoids. Applications to ¹³C NMR, proton NMR and multiple quantum NMR spectroscopies of these superaromatic species are considered.

Biphenylene and Phagraphene as Lithium Ion Battery Anode Materials

We present results of density functional theory calculations on the lithium (Li) ion storage capacity of biphenylene (BP) membrane and phagraphene (PhG) which are two-dimensional defected-graphene-like membranes. Both membranes show a larger capacity than graphene, Li₂C₆ and Li_1.5C₆ compared to LiC₆. We find that Li is very mobile on these materials and does not interact as strongly with the membranes. In the case of BP we also investigated the possible volume expansion on Li insertion. We find a 11% expansion, which is very similar to the one found in graphite. Our findings show that both membranes are suitable materials for lithium ion battery anodes.

Lithium storage on carbon nitride, graphenylene and inorganic graphenylene

We present results of density functional theory calculations on the lithium (Li) ion storage capacity of three different two dimensional porous graphene-like membranes.

Antiaromaticity in nonbenzenoid oligoarenes and ladder polymers

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and fully-conjugated ladder polymers are leading candidates for organics electronics, as their inherent conformational rigidity encourages electron delocalization. Many of these systems consist of fused benzenoid or heterocyclic aromatic rings. Less frequently, however, PAHs are reported with character that alternates between the aromaticity of benzene fragments and the antiaromaticity of a nonbenzenoid moiety. This chapter will focus on recent work published on the theory, synthesis, and properties of two such systems: [N]phenylenes containing 4π-electron cyclobutadienoid character, and diaryl[a,e]pentalenes containing 8π-electron pentalenoid character.
