Highly trans-1,4 selective (co-)polymerization of butadiene and isoprene with quinolyl anilido rare earth metal bis(alkyl) precursors

Rare-Earth Metal Complexes Supported by A Tridentate Amidinate Ligand: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Comparison in Isoprene Polymerization

To systematically investigate the dependence of the initiating group and metal size on polymerization performance, a family of rare-earth metal bis(alkyl)/bis(benzyl)/bis(amide) complexes supported by a monoanionic tridentate amidinate ligand [(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC(Ph)N(C6H4-2-OMe]- (HL) were synthesized and well-characterized. Treatment of rare-earth metal tris(alkyl)/tris(benzyl)/tris(amide) complexes Y(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)3 or Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 or Ln[N(SiHMe2)2]3(THF)x (Ln = Sc, x = 1; Ln = Y, La, Sm, Lu, x = 2) with 1 equiv of HL gave the corresponding mono(amidinate) rare-earth metal bis(alkyl)/bis(benzyl)/bis(amide) complexes [(2,6-iPr2C6H4)NC(Ph)N(C6H4-2-OMe)]Y(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 (1), [(2,6-iPr2C6H4)NC(Ph)N(C6H4-2-OMe)]Y(CH2SiMe3)2(THF) (2), and [(2,6-iPr2C6H4)NC(Ph)N(C6H4-2-OMe)]Ln[N(SiHMe2)2]2(THF)n (Ln = Y, n = 1 (3); Ln = La, n = 1 (4); Ln = Sc, n = 0 (5); Ln = Lu, n = 0 (6); Ln = Sm, n = 0 (7)) in good isolated yields. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the presence of excess AlMe3 and on treatment with 1 equiv of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], these complexes could serve as precatalysts for cationic polymerization of isoprene, in which the dependence of the polymerization activity and regioselectivity on the initiating group and metal size was observed.

Rare-Earth-Metal Complexes Bearing an Iminodibenzyl-PNP Pincer Ligand: Synthesis and Reactivity toward 3,4-Selective Polymerization of 1,3-Dienes

A PNP-pincer ligand provides a versatile ligation framework, which is highly useful in organometallic chemistry and catalytic chemistry. In this work, by a de novo strategy, a simple and efficient synthetic pathway, has been developed to prepare the new iminodibenzyl-based PNP pincer proligand ^imin-RPNP(Li or H) (R = isopropyl, phenyl). By employing salt metathesis or direct alkyl elimination, we successfully synthesized a series of iminodibenzyl-PNP rare-earth-metal (Ln = Sc, Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu) complexes and characterized them by NMR and X-ray diffraction analyses. Upon addition of a borate and triisobutylaluminum (TIBA), the rare-earth-metal complexes 2-Y, 2-Dy, 2-Ho, 2-Er, and 2-Tm bearing the ^imin-PhPNP ligand exhibited unexpectedly high 3,4-selectivity (up to 95%) for the polymerization of 1,3-dienes (isoprene and myrcene); in particular, the chosen yttrium complex 2-Y promoted the 1,3-diene polymerization in a living manner. A computational study suggested that the sterically congested configuration around the metal center imposed by the ^imin-RPNP ligand might be the main reason for this unusual selectivity.

Amido-trihydroquinoline ligated rare-earth metal complexes for polymerization of isoprene

In combination with a borate, the amido-trihydroquinoline ligated rare-earth metal complexes (Ln = Y, Lu) showed moderate catalytic activities for isoprene polymerization to generate 1,4-enriched polyisoprenes.

Side-Arm Assisted Anilido-Imine Based Rare-Earth Metal Complexes for Isoprene Stereoselective Polymerization

Anilido-imine ligands o-C₆H₄(NHAr₁)(CH=NAr₂), in which Ar₁ is 2,6-diisopropylbenzyl group and Ar₂ contains fluorine (HL₁) or methoxyl (HL₂) group on ortho-position of phenyl substituent, were synthesized for constructing rare-earth metals based complexes of 1a–1c (HL₁ based Sc, Lu, Y) and 2a–2c (HL₂ based Sc, Lu, Y). Based on their NMR spectra and X-ray single-crystal structures, the side-arm group of -F and -OMe is identified to chelate to the corresponding central metal. The twisted angles between two planes formed by chelated heteroatoms (N, N, F for HL₁ and N, N, O for HL₂) are observed, in which the largest dihedral angle (53.3°) for HL₁-Y and the smallest dihedral angle (44.32°) for HL₂-Sc are detected. After being activated by AlⁱBu₃ and [Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄], these catalysts showed great activity for isoprene polymerization. Bearing the same ligand HL₁, smaller scandium based complex 1a and middle size of lutetium based 1b provided lower cis-1,4-selectivity (57.3% and 64.2%), larger yttrium complex 1c displayed high cis-1,4-selectivity (84%). Chelating by crowded HL₂, small size of scandium complex 2a provided impressive trans-1,4-selectivity (93.0%), middle lutetium based 2b displayed non-selectivity and larger yttrium complex 2c showed clear cis-1,4-selectivity (83.3%). Moreover, 2a/AlⁱBu₃ system showed the quasi-living chain transfer capability.

Unsymmetrical diarylamido-based rare-earth alkyl complexes: their synthesis and catalytic performance in isoprene polymerization

A family of rare-earth complexes bearing diarylamido-based pincer ligands with phosphino-, phenylthio- and quinolino-sidearms have been synthesized and fully characterized. Upon activation by [Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄], the scandium (P-Sc and S-Sc) and yttrium complexes (P-Y and S-Y) could catalyze the polymerization of isoprene with cis-1,4 selectivity (up to 98.8%), while the lutetium analogues P-Lu and S-Lu produced trans-1,4 selective polyisoprene (up to 83.3%). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to clarify the mechanisms for the metal-dependent stereoselective (cis to trans) polymerization of isoprene catalyzed by P-Sc, P-Y and P-Lu, suggesting that kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable insertion-isomerization during chain propagation is the key reason for P-Lu catalyzed trans-stereoselective isoprene polymerization.
