Abstract
Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

Abstract
Large discrete supertetrahedral clusters of metal chalcogenides are rare due to the difficulty of crystallizing solids in which the negative charge of the cluster is balanced by the positive charges of the countercations. Here, we describe a discrete ligand-free T3 supertetrahedral cluster, [Ga10S16(SH)4]6-, which was successfully synthesized in the presence of the superbase 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) using the neutral surfactant polyethyleneglycol (PEG)-400 as the reaction solvent. Protonated DBUH+ cations are incorporated into the crystal structure of the product, which can be formulated as [C9H17N2]6[Ga10S16(SH)4]. This compound, which represents the first example of a discrete ligand-free T3 cluster of gallium sulfide, was fully characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance. The results presented here indicate that the use of surfactants as solvents offers potential for the preparation of new compounds containing supertetrahedral clusters.

Abstract
Metal chalcogenide supertetrahedral Tn clusters are of current interest for their unique compositions and structures, which rely highly on the structure-directing agents. Herein, we report four novel Tn cluster-based indium and gallium sulfides, namely, [NH(CH3)3]4In4S10H4 (1), (NH3)4Ga4S6 (2), [NH3CH2CH3]5(NH2CH2CH3)2Ga11S19 (3), and [NH3CH2CH2OH]6Ga10S18·2NH2CH2CH2OH (4). All four compounds were solvothermally synthesized in mixed amine-ethanol solutions or deep eutectic solvent (DES), where ammonia/amine molecules play significant structure-directing roles in the speciation and crystal growth. (1) Being protonated, the trimethylamine and ethanolamine molecules surround the T2-[In4S10H4]4- clusters (for 1) and [Ga10S18]n6n- open framework (for 4), respectively, compensating for the negative charge of the inorganic moieties. (2) With the lone pair of electrons, the ammonia molecules in 2 coordinate directly to corner Ga3+ ions of the {Ga4S6} cage to give a neutral T2-(NH3)4Ga4S6 cluster. (3) For compound 3, part of the ethylamine molecules act as terminating ligands for the T1 and T3 units in the [Ga11S19(NH2CH2CH3)2]n5n- layer, while the rest act as interlamellar countercations upon protonation. Theoretical studies reveal the contributions of N, C, and H to the density of states (DOS) for 2 and 3 because of their hybrid structures that combine the ammonia/amine ligands with sulfide moieties together.

Abstract
Discrete supertetrahedral Tn chalcogenido clusters, which can be regarded as the smallest semiconductor quantum dots with precise chemical composition, have attracted considerable attention due to their outstanding photoluminescent, photoelectric, and photo/electrocatalytic properties. Such discrete molecular clusters are suitable for solution processing towards functional materials and can be used as precursors for constructing open-framework chalcogenides. Traditionally they were synthesized hydro(solvo)thermally with molecular solvents (e. g. water or organic amines), while until recently imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) were found suitable for their preparation acting as reactive solvent and stabilizer for molecular clusters. We discuss herein recent advances in the syntheses, crystal structures, and selected properties of discrete supertetrahedral Tn chalcogenido clusters obtained in ILs. In particular, the enhanced photocatalytic properties of monodispersed Tn clusters in solvents are highlighted.

Abstract
An indium selenide [Bmmim]6[In10Se16Cl4]·(MIm)2 (Bmmim = 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium, MIm = 1-methylimidazole) cluster has been synthesized and characterized. The discrete T3 cluster could be stably dispersed in dimethyl sulfoxide, exhibiting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity at least six times that of the pristine in the solid state due to the exposure of more active sites.

Abstract
A mixed-valent hexadecanuclear manganese cluster, [MnII2MnIII14(trz)14(thetach)4(μ3-O)8(H2O)10](ClO4)6 (Mn16), containing two MnII and 14 MnIII ions, is constructed from mixed in situ generated ligands, 1,2,3-triazole (Htrz) and 1,3,5-tri(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (H3thetach). Remarkably, both ligands were not initially added into the reaction system, and their formations involve the in situ ligand decomposition and subsequent condensation reactions. The core of Mn16 is an elongated torus comprised of eight Mn atoms and four [Mn2O2] subunits bridged by oxo or alkoxide. The high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) of Mn16 dissolved in CH3CN indicates its structure remains intact as +3 and +4 species. Temperature and field dependent magnetization revealed predominantly antiferromagnetic exchange interactions within the cluster. The work provides one-pot synthesis of high-nuclearity manganese clusters using the ligands generated by in situ reactions in a tandem fashion.

Abstract
A series of photo-electroactive 2-D In–Sn–Q ternary compounds are prepared using metal–phenanthroline complex templates. The 2-D network joint of In–Sn–Q is a (In/Sn)3Q3 six-membered ring, which is different from the Sn3S4 pseudosemicube of most 2-D Sn–Q binary compounds.

Abstract
ABSTRACTColloidal β-In2S3 quantum dots stabilized in water by a number of polymers or sodium polyphosphate and mercaptoacetate were synthesized. An increase in the stabilizer content was found to result in a decrease in the average dot size from 20–30 to 5–10 nm and formation of a narrow absorption band centered at 290 nm. The position and spectral width of the band were found to be independent on stabilizer concentration, synthesis temperature and molar In:S ratio. The band was assumed to belong to a molecular cluster smaller than 1 nm which is a precursor for formation of larger regular indium sulfide quantum dots.
