Solvothermal synthesis, crystal structure, and properties of lanthanide-organic frameworks based on thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid

A series of viologen complexes containing thiophene and Br- dual fluorescent chromophores for continuous visual sensing of pH and Hg2

The mercury ion (Hg2+) is a typical high-toxicity substance that can cause severe damage to the environment and human bodies. For the detection of Hg2+, there are still significant challenges in the detection range and limit of detection (LOD). In this study, three viologen-based fluorescent probes are developed, CdCl4(Btybipy) (1), ZnBr4(Btybipy) (2), CdBr4(Btybipy) (3) (Btybipy = bis-1-thiophen-3-ylmethyl-[4,4']-bipyridinyl) through conventional solvent methods for detecting pH and Hg2+. Reversible discoloration and fluorescence response behaviour in the pH range of 4-12.8 is demonstrated by viologen-based fluorescent probes, which exhibit "ON-OFF-ON" signal changes. Compared with complex 1, it is surprising to find that complexes 2-3 display both fluorescence enhancement and fluorescence quenching simultaneously with the addition of different concentrations of Hg2+ (0-20 and 25-400 μM). There is broad linearity in the range of 0-20 and 50-300 μM with LODs of 2.14 and 3.13 nM, respectively. This occurrence of dual-signal modes is attributed to the participation of Br- and the thiophene S atom as dual chromophores in the coordination reaction of Hg2+. Dual-signal mode output, high sensitivity, wide detection range, and low LODs are exhibited by these fluorescent probes. The unique coordination reaction between Br- and the thiophene S atom with Hg2+ can provide a potential strategy for the exploitation of promising sensing platforms for monitoring Hg2+.

Dual-Ligand Strategy Employing Rigid 2,5-Thiophenedicarboxylate and 1,10-Phenanthroline as Coligands for Solvothermal Synthesis of Eight Lanthanide(III) Coordination Polymers: Structural Diversity, DFT Study, and Exploration of the Luminescent Tb(III) Coordination Polymer as an Efficient Chemical Sensor for Nitroaromatic Compounds

Lanthanide coordination polymers (Ln-CPs) are potential chemosensors when fabricated to depict a detectable change in optical properties on interaction with target analytes. This work investigates the interaction of nitroaromatic compounds with Ln-CPs leading to induced changes in fluorescence emission intensity, a crucial strategy to develop a selective and sensitive system for the sensing of nitroaromatics. Approaching toward this objective, solvothermal reactions of 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic (2,5-TDC) acid, 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-Phen), and Ln(NO₃)₃·xH₂O are carried out to assemble eight Ln(III) coordination polymers [Ln₂(2,5-TDC)₃(1,10-Phen)₂(H₂O)₂] [Ln = Pr (1), Nd (2)], {[Tb(2,5-TDC)_1.5(1,10-Phen)(H₂O)]·DMF} (3), and [Ln(2,5-TDC)_1.5(1,10-Phen)]·xH₂O (Ln = Tb (4), Dy (5), Ho (6), Er (7), and Yb (8)); x = 0 for CP 4, 5, 6, and 8 and x = 1 for CP 7 with two different space groups and dimensions. The as-synthesized polymers 1-8 are characterized by powder X-ray crystallography, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The structure-corroborated density functional theory (DFT) studies are done on the selected CPs to investigate the interactions between different structural motifs of the assembled CPs. The luminescence properties of CP 4 are explored in detail and are found to be highly sensitive for the detection of p-nitrotoluene as indicated by the most intensive fluorescence quenching with the lowest limit of detection (0.88 ppm) and high quenching constant (4.3 × 10⁴ M^-1). Other nitro compounds (viz., o-nitrobenzaldehyde, m-nitroaniline, picric acid, m-dinitrobenzene, p-nitrophenol, and p-nitroaniline) are also screened for potential sensing by CP 4.

A novel ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on lanthanide-functionalized MOF for Hg2+ detection

Post-synthesis modification is an effective strategy for the preparation of rare earth organic framework materials and the derivation of high-performance functional materials. Here, we report the preparation of a dual emission Ln-MOF material (Eu-Ca-MOF) using Ca-MOF as the parent framework and introducing Eu³⁺ ions into its channels through post-synthesis modification. Eu-Ca-MOF has good photoluminescence properties and can be used as a ratiometric fluorescence sensor (I₃₈₁/I₅₉₀) to detect Hg²⁺ ions in water sensitively. The characteristic of Eu-Ca-MOF obtained is that when the material is dispersed in an aqueous solution containing Hg²⁺ ions, the characteristic emission of the ligand at 381 nm is enhanced, while the characteristic emission of Eu³⁺ at 590 nm is quenched. The peak-to-height ratio of the two emissions can be used to achieve highly sensitive detection of Hg²⁺ ions even in the presence of other potentially competing analytes. In addition, Hg²⁺ induces Eu-Ca-MOF to produce a significant ratiometric luminescence response, which changes its luminescence color from red to blue, which is beneficial to visual analysis of naked eyes. At the same time, Eu-Ca-MOF has a wider detection range (0.02-200 μM), and a lower limit detection (2.6 nM) for Hg²⁺ ions. The lanthanide compounds prepared by post-synthetic modification provide an effective synthesis strategy for photoluminescent materials.

Expanding uranyl dicyanoaurate coordination polymers into the second and third dimensions

The solvothermal synthesis and characterization of a three-dimensional, interpenetrated uranyl dicyanoaurate coordination polymer, K2(UO2)2(UO2)2(Au(CN)2)2(O)2(NO3)4, from UO2(NO3)2·6H2O and KAu(CN)2 is described. The structure contains a three-dimensional (3D) lattice of planar tetranuclear uranyl–oxo–nitrate clusters connected by dicyanoaurate linkers, with the rotation of the clusters providing the increased dimensionality. The material undergoes a reversible single-crystal to single-crystal transformation on exposure to water vapour, which is taken up in the channels of the 3D system. A second uranyl dicyanoaurate coordination polymer of the form [UO2(DMSO)3(H2O)(Au(CN)2)][Au(CN)2] was structurally characterized as a linear chain of dicyanoaurate units connected by gold–gold bonds with pendant uranyl–water–DMSO adducts that are hydrogen bonded into a two-dimensional sheet. Both materials exhibit emission arising from both the uranyl moiety and the gold(I) centre and represent the first multidimensional uranyl–dicyanoaurate coordination polymers.

A Europium-based MOF Fluorescent Probe for Efficiently Detecting Malachite Green and Uric Acid

Lanthanide (such as Tb and Eu) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used in fluorescent probes because of their multiple coordination modes and brilliant fluorescence characteristic. Many lanthanide MOFs were applied in detecting metal ions, inorganic anions, and small molecules. However, it's rarely reported that Ln-MOF was devoted to detecting malachite green (MG) and uric acid (UA). We prepared a europium-based metal-organic framework (Eu-TDA) (TDA = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid group). Luminescence studies demonstrated that Eu-TDA can rapidly detect MG and UA with excellent selectivity and sensitivity, where individual quenching efficiency K_sv (MG: 5.8 × 10⁵ M^-1; UA: 4.15 × 10⁴ M^-1) and detection limit (MG: 0.0221 μM; UA: 0.689 μM) were regarded as the excellent MOF sensors for detecting MG and UA. The quenching of Eu-TDA's fluorescence emission by MG and UA was likely due to the spectral overlap, energy transfer, and competition. Among 11 metal cations and 14 anions, Eu-TDA can quickly and effectively recognize MG and UA with highly selective and sensitive properties. Our method possesses potential application in detecting UA in human blood and MG in the fishpond.

Luminescent and magnetic bifunctional coordination complex based on a chiral tartaric acid derivative and europium

A new mononuclear europium complex incorporating the (+)-di-p-toluoyl-D-tartaric acid (D-H2DTTA) ligand, namely, catena-poly[tris{μ2-3-carboxy-2,3-bis[(4-methylphenyl)carbonyloxy]propanoato}tris(methanol)europium(III)], [Eu(C20H17O8)3(CH3OH)3] n , (I), has been synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The structure analysis indicates that complex (I) crystallizes in the trigonal space group R3 and exhibits an infinite one-dimensional chain structure, in which the Eu3+ ion is surrounded by six O atoms from six D-HDTTA− ligands and three O atoms from three coordinated methanol molecules, thus forming a tricapped trigonal prism geometry. The D-H2DTTA ligand is partially deprotonated and adopts a μ1,6-coordination mode via two carboxylate groups to link adjacent Eu3+ ions, affording an infinite one-dimensional propeller-shaped coordination polymer chain along the c axis, with an Eu...Eu distance of 7.622 (1) Å. Moreover, C—H...π interactions lead to the formation of helical chains running along the c axis and the whole structure displays a snowflake pattern in the ab plane. The circular dichroism spectrum confirms the chirality of complex (I). The solid-state photoluminescence properties were also investigated at room temperature and (I) exhibits characteristic red emission bands derived from the Eu3+ ion (CIE 0.63, 0.32), with a reasonably long lifetime of 0.394 ms, indicating effective energy transfer from the ligand to the metal centre. In addition, a magnetic investigation reveals single-ion magnetic behaviour. The spin-orbit coupling parameter (λ) between the ground and excited states is fitted to be 360 (2) cm−1 through Zeeman perturbation. Therefore, complex (I) may be regarded as a chiral optical-magneto bifunctional material.

Magnetic, luminescence, topological and theoretical studies of structurally diverse supramolecular lanthanide coordination polymers with flexible glutaric acid as a linker

Bismuth(iii)-thiophenedicarboxylates as host frameworks for lanthanide ions: synthesis, structural characterization, and photoluminescent behavior

Three bismuth-2,5-thiophenedicarboxylates (Bi-TDC) and two europium-2,5-thiophenedicarboxylates (Eu-TDC) were synthesized under ambient conditions. The structures were determined through single crystal X-ray diffraction, and three of the phases were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Reactions of bismuth nitrate, 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate, and pyridine in an acidic solution of acetic acid and ethanol yield Hpy[Bi(TDC)2(H2O)]·1.5H2O (1), whereas reactions in a water/ethanol mixture produce a minor phase, [Hpy]3[Bi2(TDC)4(HTDC)(H2O)]·xH2O (2) along with a major product, (Hpy)2[Bi(TDC)2(HTDC)]·0.36H2O (3). The structures of 1-3 are all built from anionic Bi-TDC chains that are further bridged through additional TDC linkages into interpenetrated 2D sheets. Addition of an aqueous lanthanide solution to the reaction mixtures that yielded 1 and 2-3 resulted in the formation of doped phases, Hpy[Bi1-xLnx(TDC)2(H2O)]·1.5H2O (Bi1-xLnx-1), where Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, and Yb, and (Hpy)2[Bi0.99Eu0.01 (TDC)2(HTDC)]·0.36H2O (Bi0.99Eu0.01-3). Using europium nitrate rather than the bismuth precursor resulted in the formation of two homometallic europium based phases, [Eu(TDC)(NO3)(H2O)]n (4) and [Eu2(TDC)3(H2O)9]·5H2O (5), which adopt an extended 3D network and an interpenetrated 2D structure, respectively. Photophysical measurements were carried out for 1 and the lanthanide containing phases and quantum yield and lifetime values were determined for the visible light emitters. Herein, the structural chemistry, spectroscopic properties, and luminescence of the bismuth phases, their lanthanide doped analogs, and the europium compounds are presented.

Novel antitumor adamantane-azole gold(I) complexes as potential inhibitors of thioredoxin reductase

Gold complexes that could act as antitumor agents have attracted great attention. Heterocyclic compounds and their metal complexes display a broad spectrum of pharmacological properties. The present study reports the preparation and characterization of four novel gold(I) complexes containing tertiary phosphine and new ligands 5-adamantyl-1,3-thiazolidine-2-thione, 3-methyladamantane-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione. Spectroscopic data suggest that gold is coordinated to the exocyclic sulfur atom in all cases, as confirmed by X-ray crystallographic data obtained for complex (1) and supported by quantum-mechanical calculations. The cytotoxicity of the compounds has been evaluated in comparison to cisplatin and auranofin in three different tumor cell lines, colon cancer (CT26WT), metastatic skin melanoma (B16F10), mammary adenocarcinoma (4T1) and kidney normal cell (BHK-21). The gold complexes were more active than their respective free ligands and able to inhibit the thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) enzyme, even in the presence of albumin. Molecular modeling studies were carried out to understand the interaction between the compounds and the TrxR enzyme, considered as a potential target for new compounds in cancer treatment. The docking results show that the adamantane ring is essential to stabilize the ligand-enzyme complex prior the formation of covalent bond with gold center. The structure of the new gold compounds was established on the basis of spectroscopic data, DFT calculations and X-ray diffraction. TrxR inhibition was evaluated and the results correlated with the assays in tumor cells, suggesting the TrxR as possible target for these compounds.
