Palladium PEPPSI-IPr Complex Supported on a Calix[8]arene: A New Catalyst for Efficient Suzuki–Miyaura Coupling of Aryl Chlorides. Catalysts 2020. Abstract
We report here the synthesis and characterization of a new calix[8]arene-supported PEPPSI-IPr Pd polymetallic complex. This complex, showing greater steric hindrance around the Pd centers compared with previous calix[8]arene-based catalysts, demonstrated high reactivity and selectivity for the Suzuki–Miyaura coupling of aryl chlorides under mild conditions. Along with this good performance, the new catalyst showed low Pd leaching into the final Suzuki–Miyaura coupling products, indicative of a heterogeneous-type reactivity. This rare combination of good reactivity towards challenging substrates and low metal leaching offers great promise at both academic and industrial levels.

Abstract
Nanoformulated calix[8]arenes functionalized with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-palladium complexes were found to be efficient nano-reactors for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of water soluble iodo- and bromoaryl compounds with cyclic triol arylborates at low temperature in water without any organic co-solvent. Combined with an improved one-step synthesis of triol arylborates from boronic acid, this remarkably efficient new tool provided a variety of 4'-arylated phenylalanines and tyrosines in good yields at low catalyst loading with a wide functional group tolerance.

Abstract
Benzyloxycalix[8]arene supported catalysts bearing N-heterocyclic carbene palladium complexes on each subunit were readily synthesized. Intermediates and catalysts were fully characterized, allowing for a fine control of their structure. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of a calix[8]arene bearing eight well-defined NHC palladium complexes. The macrocyclic structure of calix[8]arenes allowed for a scalable and chromatography-free catalyst synthesis under homogeneous conditions, while the catalytic reaction proceeded under heterogeneous conditions, just by changing the nature of the solvent. Indeed, when used as a suspension in ethanol, a high TON and TOF were obtained through a large panel of functionalized brominated substrates in C-C Suzuki-Miyaura couplings, with low metal contamination after simple filtration.

Abstract
A series of gold(I) and gold(III) complexes containing bulky bis-N,N'-(9-alkylfluorenyl) heterocyclic carbene (R F-NHC) ligands have been prepared in high yields from appropriate imidazolinium, imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts. In all complexes, the carbene ligand provides high steric protection of the Au-X bond trans to the carbenic C atom. Irrespective of the metal oxidation state, the complexes showed high efficiency in a tandem 3,3-rearrangement/Nazarov reaction of an enynyl acetate. One of the AuIII complexes, [AuCl3 (R F-NHC)], was further found to be suitable for the efficient cyclisation of a propargylcarboxamide. Furthermore, unlike related NHC-gold(I) complexes based on conventional bulky N-heterocyclic carbenes (notably, 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr), 1,3-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) and 1,3-(bis-tert-butyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (ItBu)), the studied [AuI Cl(R F-NHC)] complexes catalysed the conversion of a 1,6-enyne in the presence of indole into a single product; this arises from the embracing character of the ligand, which prevents indole addition on one of the catalytic intermediates. A structure/selectivity relationship was established for all carbenes tested that took into account percent buried volumes and topographic steric maps. The results illustrate the high potential of confining NHCs in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The preparation and coordination chemistry of 5,17-bis(3-methyl-1-imidazol-2-ylidene)-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene (1) is described. Starting from the bis(imidazolium) pro-ligand 1·2HI, the free carbene 1 was readily generated in solution through deprotonation using K[O(t)Bu] and its reactivity with rhodium(i) dimers [Rh(COD)Cl]2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and [Rh(CO)2Cl]2 investigated. Dinuclear complexes were isolated in both cases, where the calix[4]arene-based NHC ligand adopts a bridging μ(2)-coordination mode, and in one case characterised in the solid-state by X-ray diffraction. Using instead an isolated and well-defined (mononuclear) silver transfer agent, generated by reaction of 1·2HI with Ag2O in the presence of a halide extractor, reactions with [Rh(COD)Cl]2 and [Rh(CO)2Cl]2 produced cationic dinuclear complexes bearing μ(2)-1 and μ(2)-Cl bridging ligands. The structural formulation of the novel dinuclear adducts of 1 was aided through spectroscopic congruence with model complexes, containing monodentate 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (I(i)Pr2Me2).

Abstract
Two N-heterocyclic carbene precursors having their nitrogen atoms substituted by the expanded 9-ethyl-9-fluorenyl group, namely imidazolinium chloride 6 and imidazolium chloride 7, have been synthesized in high yields from fluorenone (1).

Abstract
A C(4)-bound palladium-N-heterocyclic carbene (4) was selectively obtained from the C(2)-unsubstituted imidazolium salt 3. The higher stability of the C(4) versus the C(2)-bound carbene complex due to pyridine chelation assistance allowed this mesoionic compound to be obtained.
