Abstract
Nitrogen-containing hydrothermal carbon (N-HTC) materials of spherical particle morphology were prepared by means of hydrothermal synthesis with glucose and urotropine as precursors. The molar ratio of glucose to urotropine has been varied to achieve a continuous increase in nitrogen content. By raising the ratio of urotropine to glucose, a maximal nitrogen fraction of about 19 wt % could be obtained. Decomposition products of both glucose and urotropine react with each other; this opens up a variety of possible reaction pathways. The pH has a pronounced effect on the reaction pathway of the corresponding reaction steps. For the first time, a comprehensive analytical investigation, comprising a multitude of analytical tools and instruments, of a series of nitrogen-containing HTC materials was applied. Functional groups and structural motifs identified were analyzed by means of FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric MS, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Information on reaction mechanisms and structural details were obtained by electronic structure calculations that were compared with vibrational spectra of polyfuran or polypyrrole-like groups, which represent structural motifs occurring in the present samples.

Abstract
Using elliptical iron glycolate nanosheets as precursors, elliptical Fe3O4/C core-shell nanorings (NRs) [25 ± 10 nm in wall thickness, 150 ± 40 nm in length, and 1.6 ± 0.3 in long/short axis ratio] are synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal route. The surface-poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)-protected-glucose reduction/carbonization/Ostwald ripening mechanism is responsible for Fe3O4/C NR formation. Increasing the glucose/precursor molar ratio can enhance carbon contents, causing a linear decrease in saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercivity (Hc). The Fe3O4/C NRs reveal enhanced low-frequency microwave absorption because of improvements to their permittivity and impedance matching. A maximum RL value of -55.68 dB at 3.44 GHz is achieved by Fe3O4/C NRs with 11.95 wt % C content at a volume fraction of 17 vol %. Reflection loss (RL) values (≤-20 dB) are observed at 2.11-10.99 and 16.5-17.26 GHz. Our research provides insights into the microwave absorption mechanism of elliptical Fe3O4/C core-shell NRs. Findings indicate that ring-like and core-shell nanostructures are promising structures for devising new and effective microwave absorbers.

Abstract
In situ core-shell coating was used to improve the electrochemical performance of Si-based anodes with polypyrrole-Fe coordination complex. The vast functional groups in the organometallic coordination complex easily formed hydrogen bonds when in situ modifying commercial Si nanoparticles. The incorporation of polypyrrole-Fe resulted in the conformal conductive coating surrounding each Si nanoparticle, not only providing good electrical connection to the particles but also promoting the formation of a stable solid-electrolyte-interface layer on the Si electrode surface, enhancing the cycling properties. As an anode material for Li-ion batteries, modified silicon powders exhibited high reversible capacity (3567 mAh/g at 0.3 A/g), good rate property (549.12 mAh/g at 12 A/g), and excellent cycling performance (reversible capacity of 1500 mAh/g after 800 cycles at 1.2 A/g). The constructed novel concept of core-shell coating Si particles presented a promising route for facile and large-scale production of Si-based anodes for extremely durable Li-ion batteries, which provided a wide range of applications in the field of energy storage of the renewable energy derived from the solar energy, hydropower, tidal energy, and geothermal heat.

Abstract
A straightforward technique for functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) nanoparticles was developed. Iron oxide nanoparticles were deposited on MWCNT surfaces by a deposition-precipitation method using Fe(3+)/Fe(2+) salts precursors in basic solution. The characterizations by HRTEM, XRD, SEM/EDX, AAS and TPR analyses confirmed the successful formation of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles on the MWCNT surface. Fe(3)O(4)/MWCNT hybrid composites were analysed in vitro by incubation with mesenchymal stem cells for 1, 3 and 7 days, either in the presence or absence of a static magnetic field. Analysis of cell proliferation was performed by the MTT assay, quantification of cellular stress was performed by the Lactate Dehydrogenase assay and analysis of cell morphology was performed by actin immunofluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. Results demonstrate that the introduction of magnetite into the MWCNT structure increases biocompatibility of oxidized MWCNTs. In addition, the presence of a static magnetic field further increases Fe(3)O(4)/MWCNT influence on cell behaviour. These results demonstrate this novel Fe(3)O(4)/MWCNT hybrid composite has good potential for tissue engineering applications.
