Ultrathin hierarchical hydrogel-carbon nanocomposite for highly stretchable fast-response water-proof wearable humidity sensors

Wearable humidity sensors play an important role in human health monitoring. However, challenges persist in realizing high performance wearable humidity sensors with fast response and good stretchability and durability. Here we report wearable humidity sensors employing an ultrathin micro-nano hierarchical hydrogel-carbon nanocomposite. The nanocomposite is synthesized on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films via a facile two-step solvent-free approach, which creates a hierarchical architecture consisting of periodic microscale wrinkles and vapor-deposited nanoporous hydrogel-candle-soot nanocoating. The hierarchical surface topography results in a significantly enlarged specific surface area (>107 times that of planar hydrogel), which along with the ultrathin hydrogel endow the sensor with high sensitivity and a fast response/recovery (13/0.48 s) over a wide humidity range (11-96%). Owing to the wrinkle structure and interpenetrating network between the hydrogel and PDMS, the sensor is stable and durable against repeated 180° bending, 100% strain, and even scratching. Furthermore, encapsulation of the sensor imparts excellent resistance to water, sweat, and bacteria without influencing its performance. The sensor is then successfully used to monitor different human respiratory behaviors and skin humidity in real time. The reported method is convenient and cost-effective, which could bring exciting new opportunities in the fabrication of next-generation wearable humidity sensors.

Probing and Manipulating Noncovalent Interactions in Functional Polymeric Systems

Noncovalent interactions, which usually feature tunable strength, reversibility, and environmental adaptability, have been recognized as driving forces in a variety of biological and chemical processes, contributing to the recognition between molecules, the formation of molecule clusters, and the establishment of complex structures of macromolecules. The marriage of noncovalent interactions and conventional covalent polymers offers the systems novel mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties, which are highly dependent on the binding mechanisms of the noncovalent interactions that can be illuminated via quantification. This review systematically discusses the nanomechanical characterization of typical noncovalent interactions in polymeric systems, mainly through direct force measurements at microscopic, nanoscopic, and molecular levels, which provide quantitative information (e.g., ranges, strengths, and dynamics) on the binding behaviors. The fundamental understandings of intermolecular and interfacial interactions are then correlated to the macroscopic performances of a series of noncovalently bonded polymers, whose functions (e.g., stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing capacity, universal adhesiveness) can be customized through the manipulation of the noncovalent interactions, providing insights into the rational design of advanced materials with applications in biomedical, energy, environmental, and other engineering fields.

Multifunctional Printable Micropattern Array for Digital Nucleic Acid Assay for Microbial Pathogen Detection

The digital nucleic acid assay is a precise, sensitive, and reproducible method for determining the presence of individual target molecules separated in designated partitions; thus, this technique can be used for the nucleic acid detection. Here, we propose a multifunctional micropattern array capable of isolating individual target molecules into partitions and simultaneous on-site cell lysis to achieve a direct DNA extraction and digitized quantification thereof. The multifunctional micropattern array is fabricated by the deposition of a copolymer film, poly(2-dimethylaminomethyl styrene-co-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pDH), directly on a microfluidic chip surface via the photoinitiated chemical vapor deposition process, followed by hydrophobic microcontact printing (μCP) to define each partition for the nucleic acid isolation. The pDH layer is a positively charged surface, which is desirable for the bacterial lysis and DNA capture, while showing exceptional water stability for more than 24 h. The hydrophobic μCP-treated pDH surface is stable under aqueous conditions at a high temperature (70 °C) for 1 h and enables the rapid and reliable formation of thousands of sessile microdroplets for the compartmentalization of an aqueous sample solution without involving bulky and costly microfluidic devices. By assembling the multifunctional micropattern array into the microfluidic chip, the isothermal amplification in each partition can detect DNA templates over a concentration range of 0.01-2 ng/μL. The untreated bacterial cells can also be directly compartmentalized via the microdroplet formation, followed by the on-site cell lysis and DNA capture on the compartmentalized pDH surface. For Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella enteritidis, and Staphylococcus aureus cells, cell numbers ranging from 1.4 × 10⁴ to 1.4 × 10⁷ can be distinguished by using the multifunctional micropattern array, regardless of the cell type. The multifunctional micropattern array developed in this study provides a novel multifunctional compartmentalization method for rapid, simple, and accurate digital nucleic acid assays.

Large-pore-size membranes tuned by chemically vapor deposited nanocoatings for rapid and controlled desalination

Though membranes with pore size larger than 1 μm are much desired to increase the permeate flux of membrane distillation (MD), the vulnerability of large-pore-size membranes to pore wetting results in the penetration of saline water and consequent failure of MD operation. We report modification of large-pore-size membranes by chemically vapor deposited nanocoatings to achieve both high salt rejection and high permeate flux. The chemical vapor modification not only led to enhanced surface hydrophobicity and increased liquid entry pressure in membranes, but also significantly improved membrane wetting resistance at high temperature. Membranes with 1.0 and 2.0 μm pore size were successfully used for MD desalination with salt rejection higher than 99.99% achieved. Enlarging the pore size from 0.2 μm to 2.0 μm contributed to 48-73% enhancement in the permeate flux of the modified membranes. The modified large-pore-size membranes maintained the high permeate flux at elevated saline concentration and extended the operation time.

Recent Advances in Bioinspired Gel Surfaces with Superwettability and Special Adhesion

Engineering surface wettability is of great importance in academic research and practical applications. The exploration of hydrogel-based natural surfaces with superior properties has revealed new design principles of surface superwettability. Gels are composed of a cross-linked polymer network that traps numerous solvents through weak interactions. The natural fluidity of the trapped solvents confers the liquid-like property to gel surfaces, making them significantly different from solid surfaces. Bioinspired gel surfaces have shown promising applications in diverse fields. This work aims to summarize the fundamental understanding and emerging applications of bioinspired gel surfaces with superwettability and special adhesion. First, several typical hydrogel-based natural surfaces with superwettability and special adhesion are briefly introduced, followed by highlighting the unique properties and design principles of gel-based surfaces. Then, the superwettability and emerging applications of bioinspired gel surfaces, including liquid/liquid separation, antiadhesion of organisms and solids, and fabrication of thin polymer films, are presented in detail. Finally, an outlook on the future development of these novel gel surfaces is also provided.

Overview of Carbon Nanotubes for Biomedical Applications

The unique combination of mechanical, optical and electrical properties offered by carbon nanotubes has fostered research for their use in many kinds of applications, including the biomedical field. However, due to persisting outstanding questions regarding their potential toxicity when considered as free particles, the research is now focusing on their immobilization on substrates for interface tuning or as biosensors, as load in nanocomposite materials where they improve both mechanical and electrical properties or even for direct use as scaffolds for tissue engineering. After a brief introduction to carbon nanotubes in general and their proposed applications in the biomedical field, this review will focus on nanocomposite materials with hydrogel-based matrices and especially their potential future use for diagnostics, tissue engineering or targeted drug delivery. The toxicity issue will also be briefly described in order to justify the safe(r)-by-design approach offered by carbon nanotubes-based hydrogels.

Vapor deposition of polyionic nanocoatings for reduction of microglia adhesion

Polyionics have great potential in improving the performance of neural probes by regulating microglial response. With the shrinkage of microelectrode size and increase in device complexity, challenges arise during liquid-based synthesis of polyionic compounds on neural probes. Nanocoatings of polyionics, with highly crosslinked bulk structure and abundant ionic functional groups on the surface, were synthesized using a process combining chemical vapor deposition and free radical polymerization. Both conformal surface engineering of neural microelectrodes and facile tailoring of surface ionic composition was achieved using this single-step vapor-based method. Adhesion of microglia was reduced on all the polyionic modified surfaces after a seven-day in vitro test, and polyionics with mixed charges presented much lower microglial adhesion than surfaces with single charges. Laminin adsorption on polyionics with mixed charges was significantly reduced due to the surface electrical neutrality and the enhanced wettability. These findings provide valuable information towards the development of neural probes with enhanced biocompatibility and signal stability.

Polymer Thin Films and Surface Modification by Chemical Vapor Deposition: Recent Progress

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) polymerization uses vapor phase monomeric reactants to synthesize organic thin films directly on substrates. These thin films are desirable as conformal surface engineering materials and functional layers. The facile tunability of the films and their surface properties allow successful integration of CVD thin films into prototypes for applications in surface modification, device fabrication, and protective films. CVD polymers also bridge microfabrication technology with chemical and biological systems. Robust coatings can be achieved via CVD methods as antifouling, anti-icing, and antihydrate surfaces, as well as stimuli-responsive or biocompatible polymers and novel nanostructures. Use of low-energy input, modest vacuum, and room-temperature substrates renders CVD polymerization compatible with thermally sensitive substrates and devices. Compared with solution-based methods, CVD is particularly useful for insoluble materials, such as electrically conductive polymers and controllably crosslinked networks, and has the potential to reduce environmental, health, and safety impacts associated with solvents. This review discusses the relevant background and selected applications of recent advances by two methods that display and use the high retention of the organic functional groups from their respective monomers, initiated CVD (iCVD) and oxidative CVD (oCVD) polymerization.

Vapor deposition routes to conformal polymer thin films

Vapor phase syntheses, including parylene chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and initiated CVD, enable the deposition of conformal polymer thin films to benefit a diverse array of applications. This short review for nanotechnologists, including those new to vapor deposition methods, covers the basic theory in designing a conformal polymer film vapor deposition, sample preparation and imaging techniques to assess film conformality, and several applications that have benefited from vapor deposited, conformal polymer thin films.

Biomimetic water-collecting materials inspired by nature

Nowadays, water shortage is a severe issue all over the world, especially in some arid and undeveloped areas. Interestingly, a variety of natural creatures can collect water from fog, which can provide a source of inspiration to develop novel and functional water-collecting materials. Recently, as an increasingly hot research topic, bioinspired materials with the water collection ability have captured vast scientific attention in both practical applications and fundamental research studies. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of water collection in various natural creatures and present the fabrications, functions, applications, and new developments of bioinspired materials in recent years. The theoretical basis related to the phenomenon of water collection containing wetting behaviors and water droplet transportations is described in the beginning, i.e., the Young's equation, Wenzel model, Cassie model, surface energy gradient model and Laplace pressure equation. Then, the water collection mechanisms of three typical and widely researched natural animals and plants are discussed and their corresponding bioinspired materials are simultaneously detailed, which are cactus, spider, and desert beetles, respectively. This is followed by introducing another eight animals and plants (butterfly, shore birds, wheat awns, green bristlegrass, the Cotula fallax plant, Namib grass, green tree frogs and Australian desert lizards) that are rarely reported, exhibiting water collection properties or similar water droplet transportation. Finally, conclusions and outlook concerning the future development of bioinspired fog-collecting materials are presented.

Carbon nanotubes hybrid hydrogels in drug delivery: a perspective review

The use of biologics, polymers, silicon materials, carbon materials, and metals has been proposed for the preparation of innovative drug delivery devices. One of the most promising materials in this field are the carbon-nanotubes composites and hybrid materials coupling the advantages of polymers (biocompatibility and biodegradability) with those of carbon nanotubes (cellular uptake, stability, electromagnatic, and magnetic behavior). The applicability of polymer-carbon nanotubes composites in drug delivery, with particular attention to the controlled release by composites hydrogel, is being extensively investigated in the present review.

Formation of heterogeneous polymer films via simultaneous or sequential depositions of soluble and insoluble monomers onto ionic liquids

In this paper, we studied the formation of heterogeneous polymer films on ionic liquid (IL) substrates via the simultaneous or sequential depositions of monomers that are either soluble or insoluble in the liquid. We found that the insoluble monomer 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl acrylate (PFDA) only polymerizes at the IL surface, while the soluble monomer ethylene glycol diacrylate (EGDA) can polymerize at both the IL surface and within the bulk liquid. The polymer chains that form within the bulk liquid entrap IL as they integrate into the polymer film formed at the IL surface, resulting in heterogeneous films that contain IL on the bottom side. Varying the order in which the soluble and insoluble monomers were introduced into the system led to different film structures. When the insoluble monomer was introduced first, a film formed at the surface and the soluble monomer then diffused through this film and polymerized within the bulk, leading to a sandwich structure. When the soluble monomer was introduced first, a layered film was formed whose structure followed the order in which the monomers were introduced. When the two monomers were introduced simultaneously, the soluble monomer polymerized in the bulk while a copolymer film formed at the surface. This study provides an understanding of how to control the composition of layered polymer films deposited onto IL substrates in order to develop new composite materials for separation and electrochemical applications.
