Nanoscale semiconductor-insulator-metal core/shell heterostructures: facile synthesis and light emission

Surface Modification of ZnO Nanotubes by Ag and Au Coatings of Variable Thickness: Systematic Analysis of the Factors Leading to UV Light Emission Enhancement

Surface modification by plasmonic metals is one of the most promising ways to increase the band-to-band excitonic recombination in zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures. However, the metal-induced modulation of the UV light emission depends strongly on the production method, making it difficult to recognize the mechanism responsible for charge/energy transfer between the semiconductor and a metal. Therefore, in this study, the ZnO/Ag and Au hybrids were produced by the same, fully controlled experimental approach. ZnO nanotubes (NTs), fabricated by a template-assisted ALD synthesis, were coated by metals of variable mass thickness (1-6.5 nm thick) using the electron beam PVD technique. The deposited Ag and Au metals grew in the form of island films made of metallic nanoparticles (NPs). The size of the NPs and their size distribution decreased, while the spacing between the NPs increased as the mass of the deposited Ag and Au metals decreased. Systematic optical analysis allowed us to unravel a specific role of surface defects in ZnO NTs in the processes occurring at the ZnO/metal interface. The enhancement of the UV emission was observed only in the ZnO/Ag system. The phenomena were tentatively ascribed to the coupling between the defect-related (DL) excitonic recombination in ZnO and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at the Ag NPs. However, the enhancement of UV light was observed only for a narrow range of Ag NP dimensions, indicating the great importance of the size and internanoparticle spacing in the plasmonic coupling. Moreover, the enhancement factors were much stronger in ZnO NTs characterized by robust DL-related emission before metal deposition. In contrast to Ag, Au coatings caused quenching of the UV emission from ZnO NTs, which was attributed to the uncoupling between the DL and LSP energies in this system and a possible formation of the ohmic contact between the Au metal and the ZnO.

Effect of Magnetic Field on Photoresponse of Cobalt Integrated Zinc Oxide Nanorods

Cobalt integrated zinc oxide nanorod (Co-ZnO NR) array is presented as a novel heterostructure for ultraviolet (UV) photodetector (PD). Defect states in Co-ZnO NRs surface induces an enhancement in photocurrent as compared to pristine ZnO NRs PD. Presented Co-ZnO NRs PD is highly sensitive to external magnetic field that demonstrated 185.7% enhancement in response current. It is concluded that the opposite polarizations of electron and holes in the presence of external magnetic field contribute to effective separation of electron-hole pairs that have drifted upon UV illumination. Moreover, Co-ZnO NRs PD shows a faster photodetection speed (1.2 s response time and 7.4 s recovery time) as compared to the pristine ZnO NRs where the response and recovery times are observed as 38 and 195 s, respectively.

Photocatalytic Activity and Fluorescence of Gold/Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Formed by Dithiol Linking

Monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with average diameters of 2-4 nm have been covalently attached to zinc oxide nanorods using dithiol ligands. Electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy show that ozone treatment or annealing at 300 or 450 °C increases the average diameter of the AuNPs to 6, 8, and 14 (±1) nm, respectively, and decomposes the organic layers to various degrees. These treatments locate the AuNPs closer to the nanorods. Heating and subsequent ozone exposure changes the color of the as-prepared nanocomposite powder from blue to purple due to oxidation of the outer layer of the AuNPs, and heating to 300 °C changes it to pink due to oxygen desorption. ZnO nanorods have a bimodal photoluminescence spectrum that consists of an ultraviolet excitonic peak and a visible, surface defect-related peak. Ozone treatment and annealing of the nanocomposite decreases the intensities of both peaks due to quenching by the AuNPs, but the visible peak is affected less. The photocatalytic efficiency of the nanocomposites toward oxidative degradation of rhodamine B has been measured and follows the order 300 °C > 450 °C > ozone treated ≈ as-prepared ≈ bare ZnO. The greater efficiency of the annealed samples likely arises from decreased electron-hole pair recombination rates.

Self Powered Highly Enhanced Dual Wavelength ZnO@CdS Core-Shell Nanorod Arrays Photodetector: An Intelligent Pair

On the face of the impending energy crisis, developing low-energy or even zero-energy photoelectronic devices is extremely important. A multispectral photosensitivity feature of a self-powered device provides an additional powerful tool. We have developed an unprecedented high performance dual wavelength self-powered ZnO@CdS/PEDOT:PSS core-shell nanorods array photodetector through a simple aqueous chemical method wherein a suitable band alignment between an intelligent material pair, i.e. ZnO and CdS, has been utilized. Besides a noteworthy advantage of the devices being that they show a very sharp and prominent dual wavelength photosensitivity, both the ultraviolet and visible light sensitivity (ratio of current under illumination (Iphoto)/current under dark (Idark)) of the device are two orders of higher magnitude than those of pristine ZnO, attaining values of 2.8 × 10(3) and 1.07 × 10(3), respectively. At the same time, temporal responses faster than 20 ms could be achieved with these solution-processed photodetectors. The present study provides a very important direction to engineer core-shell nanostructured devices for dual wavelength high photosensitivity.

Oxide nanowires for spintronics: materials and devices

Spintronics, or spin-based data storage and manipulation technology, is emerging as a very active research area because of both new science and potential technological applications. As the characteristic lengths of spin-related phenomena naturally fall into the nanometre regime, researchers start applying the techniques of bottom-up nanomaterial synthesis and assembly to spintronics. It is envisaged that novel physics regarding spin manipulation and domain dynamics can be realized in quantum confined nanowire-based devices. Here we review the recent breakthroughs related to the applications of oxide nanowires in spintronics from the perspectives of both material candidates and device fabrication. Oxide nanowires generally show excellent crystalline quality and tunable physical properties, but more efforts are imperative as we strive to develop novel spintronic nanowires and devices.
