Abstract
Cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes [Pt(ppy)Cl(CNAr)] (ppy = 2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N; Ar = C6H4-2-I 1, C6H4-4-I 2, C6H3-2-F-4-I 3, and C6H3-2,4-I2 4) bearing ancillary isocyanide ligands were obtained by the bridge-splitting reaction between the dimer [Pt(ppy)(μ-Cl)]2 and 2 equiv any one of the corresponding CNAr. Complex 2 was crystallized in two polymorphic forms, namely, 2 I and 2 II, exhibiting green (emission quantum yield of 0.5%) and orange (emission quantum yield of 12%) phosphorescence, respectively. Structure-directing non-covalent contacts in these polymorphs were verified by a combination of experimental (X-ray diffraction) and theoretical methods (NCIplot analysis, combined electron localization function (ELF), and Bader quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM analysis)). A noticeable difference in the spectrum of non-covalent interactions of 2 I and 2 II is seen in the Pt···Pt interactions in 2 II and absence of these metallophilic contacts in 2 I. The other solid luminophores, namely, 1, 3 I-II, 4, and 4·CHCl3, exhibit green luminescence; their structures include intermolecular C-I···Cl-Pt halogen bonds as the structure-directing interactions. Crystals of 1, 2 I, 3 I, 3 II, 4, and 4·CHCl3 demonstrated a reversible mechanochromic color change achieved by mechanical grinding (green to orange) and solvent adsorption (orange to green).

Abstract
A new phosphorescent iridium(III) complex, bis[2',6'-difluorophenyl-4-formylpyridinato-N,C4']iridium(III) (picolinate) (IrC), was synthesized, fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, and utilized for the detection of CN(-) on the basis of the widely known hypothesis of the formation of cyanohydrins. The solid-state structure of the developed IrC was authenticated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Notably, the iridium(III) complex exhibits intense red phosphorescence in the solid state at 298 K (ΦPL = 0.16) and faint emission in acetonitrile solution (ΦPL = 0.02). The cyanide anion binding properties with IrC in pure and aqueous acetonitrile solutions were systematically investigated using two different channels: i.e., by means of UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence. The addition of 2.0 equiv of cyanide to a solution of the iridium(III) complex in acetonitrile (c = 20 μM) visibly changes the color from orange to yellow. On the other hand, the PL intensity of IrC at 480 nm was dramatically enhanced ∼5.36 × 10(2)-fold within 100 s along with a strong signature of a blue shift of the emission by ∼155 nm with a detection limit of 2.16 × 10(-8) M. The cyanohydrin formation mechanism is further supported by results of a (1)H NMR titration of IrC with CN(-). As an integral part of this work, phosphorescent test strips have been constructed by impregnating Whatman filter paper with IrC for the trace detection of CN(-) in the contact mode, exhibiting a detection limit at the nanogram level (∼265 ng/mL). Finally, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were performed to understand the electronic structure and the corresponding transitions involved in the designed phosphorescent iridium(III) complex probe and its cyanide adduct.

Abstract
On reaction of 2,2'-bipyridine with iridium(iii), an "aggregation induced phosphorescence (AIP)" active "rollover" complex, [Ir(PPh3)2(bipy-H)(Cl)(H)] (bipy-H = κ(2)-N,C-2,2'-bipyridine) or [Ir(bipy-H)], is obtained. The emission colour changes from bluish-green to yellowish-orange and vice versa after repeated protonation and deprotonation of [Ir(bipy-H)], respectively, which unequivocally supports its reversible nature. [Ir(bipy-H)] is sensitive to acids with different pKa values. Tuning of the emission properties can be achieved in the presence of acids with different pKas. This behaviour allows the complex, [Ir(bipy-H)], to function as a phosphorescent acid sensor in both solution and the solid state, as well as a chemosensor for detecting acidic and basic organic vapours. The protonated form, [Ir(bipy-H)H(+)], which is generated after protonation of [Ir(bipy-H)] can be used as a solvatochromic probe for oxygen containing solvents, and also shows vapochromic properties. The emission, absorption and (1)H NMR spectra of [Ir(bipy-H)] under acidic and basic conditions demonstrate its reversible nature. DFT based calculations suggest that changes in the electron affinity of the pyridinyl rings are responsible for all these processes.

Abstract
Fluorescent CdS QDs surface functionalized with organic functional unit, N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-cysteine (L), has been synthesized using simple wet chemical approach in a single step. The as-prepared L-CdS QDs showed good fluorescence at 542 nm. Fluorescence sensor studies of L-CdS QDs showed selective fluorescence switching (542-600 nm) for Cu(2+) ions and quenching for Hg(2+) ions in aqueous solution. High selectivity of L-CdS QDs for Cu(2+) ions have been confirmed by interference studies. Interestingly, L-CdS QDs showed enhancement in the fluorescence intensity (4-fold) upon reducing pH from 2.0 to 10.0 without changing λmax. Importantly, selective fluorescent switching and quenching for Cu(2+) and Hg(2+) was observed from 2.0 to 10.0 pH range. The practical application of L-CdS QDs fluorescence sensing for Cu(2+) and Hg(2+) have also been demonstrated in real samples such as river, pond, tap and ground water.

Abstract
A novel neutral iridium(III) complex-based phosphorescent probe (Ir-2) for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been designed and synthesized by incorporating a benzeneboronic acid pinacol ester (bpe) moiety into 3-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-7-hydroxy-coumarin (Bthc) as a cyclometalated ligand (Bthc-bpe). The photophysical behavior of Ir-2 was investigated by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and quantum mechanical calculations. The absorption spectra of the complex Ir-2 are dominated by the cyclometalated ligand; thus it shows an intense absorption band in the visible region at 460 nm with a molar extinction coefficient (ε) of about 3 × 10(4) M(-1) cm(-1), which is rarely found for typical polypyridine iridium(III) complexes. The complex Ir-2 displays efficient phosphorescent emission at 560 nm at room temperature originating from a mixed triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)MLCT, dπ(Ir) → π* (Bthc-bpe)) and triplet intraligand ((3)ILCT, π-π* (Bthc-bpe)) excited states as suggested by the DFT computational studies. Upon reaction with H2O2, the complex displays an emission decrease induced by an intense intermolecular aggregation due to the cleavage of the bulky benzeneboronic acid pinacol ester substituent, indicating that Ir-2 could act as an ON-OFF-type phosphorescent probe for H2O2. Additionally, selectivity studies reveal that the complex Ir-2 possesses high selectivity toward H2O2 over other reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Abstract
"United we stand, divided we fall."--Aesop. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a photophysical phenomenon shown by a group of luminogenic materials that are non-emissive when they are dissolved in good solvents as molecules but become highly luminescent when they are clustered in poor solvents or solid state as aggregates. In this Review we summarize the recent progresses made in the area of AIE research. We conduct mechanistic analyses of the AIE processes, unify the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM) as the main cause for the AIE effects, and derive RIM-based molecular engineering strategies for the design of new AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Typical examples of the newly developed AIEgens and their high-tech applications as optoelectronic materials, chemical sensors and biomedical probes are presented and discussed.
