Abstract
Covering: 1976 to December 2023Chloranthaceae is comprised of four extant genera (Chloranthus, Sarcandra, Hedyosmum, and Ascarina), totaling about 80 species, many of which have been widely used as herbal medicines for diverse medical purposes. Chloranthaceae plants represent a rich source of structurally interesting and diverse secondary metabolites, with sesquiterpenoids and diterpenoids being the predominant structural types. Lindenane sesquiterpenoids and their oligomers, chemotaxonomical markers of the family Chloranthaceae, have shown a wide spectrum of bioactivities, attracting significant attention from organic chemists and pharmacologists. Recent achievements also demonstrated the research value of two unique structural types in this plant family, sesquiterpenoid-monoterpenoid heterodimers and meroterpenoids. This review systematically summarizes 682 structurally characterized terpenoids from 22 Chloranthaceae plants and their key biological activities as well as the chemical synthesis of selected terpenoids.

Abstract
Covering: 1925 to July 2023Among the sesquiterpenoids with rich structural diversity and potential bioactivities, lindenane sesquiterpenoids (LSs) possess a characteristic cis, trans-3,5,6-carbocyclic skeleton and mainly exist as monomers and diverse oligomers in plants from the Lindera genus and Chloranthaceae family. Since the first identification of lindeneol from Lindera strychnifolia in 1925, 354 natural LSs and their oligomers with anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and anti-infective activities have been discovered. Structurally, two-thirds of LSs exist as oligomers with interesting skeletons through diverse polymeric patterns, especially Diels-Alder [4 + 2] cycloaddition. Fascinated by their diverse bioactivities and intriguing polycyclic architectures, synthetic chemists have engaged in the total synthesis of natural LSs in recent decades. In this review, the research achievements related to LSs from 1925 to July of 2023 are systematically and comprehensively summarized, focusing on the classification of their structures, chemical synthesis, and bioactivities, which will be helpful for further research on LSs and their oligomers.

Abstract
Simmons-Smith cyclopropanation is a widely used reaction in organic synthesis for stereospecific conversion of alkenes into cyclopropane. The utility of this reaction can be realized by the fact that the cyclopropane motif is a privileged synthetic intermediate and a core structural unit of many biologically active natural compounds such as terpenoids, alkaloids, nucleosides, amino acids, fatty acids, polyketides and drugs. The modified form of Simmons-Smith cyclopropanation involves the employment of Et2Zn and CH2I2 (Furukawa reagent) toward the total synthesis of a variety of structurally complex natural products that possess broad range of biological activities including anticancer, antimicrobial and antiviral activities. This review aims to provide an intriguing glimpse of the Furukawa-modified Simmons-Smith cyclopropanation, within the year range of 2005 to 2022.

Abstract
The asymmetric total synthesis of three lindenane sesquiterpenoid oligomers, shizukaol J, trichloranoid C and trishizukaol A, has been accomplished concisely in 15, 16 and 18 longest linear steps, respectively. The expeditious construction of molecular architectures was facilitated by Nelson's catalytic asymmetric ketene-aldehyde cycloaddition, a sequence of allylic alkylation/reduction/acidic cyclization to forge a lactone, and a double aldol condensation cascade to construct the 5/6 bicyclic system. Diastereoselective nucleophilic substitution promoted by a phase transfer catalyst constructed the C11 quaternary stereogenic center, thus prompting synthetic efficacy toward shizukaol J. The synthesis of trichloranoid C and trishizukaol A was achieved after a cascade involving furanyl diene formation and a Diels-Alder reaction, as well as a one-pot sequence involving furan oxidation and global deprotection. Furthermore, our biological evaluation revealed that two compounds exhibited unexpected toxicity against tumor cell lines.

Abstract
Natural disesquiterpenoids represent a small group of secondary metabolites characterized by complex molecular scaffolds and interesting pharmacological profiles. In the last decade, more than 400 new disesquiterpenoids have been discovered and fully characterized, pointing out once more the "magic touch" of nature in the design of new compounds. The perfect blend of complex and unique architectures and biological activity has made sesquiterpene dimers an attractive and challenging synthetic target, inspiring organic chemists to find new and biomimetic approaches to replicate the efficiency and the selectivity of natural processes under laboratory conditions. In this work, we present a review covering the literature from 2010 to 2020 reporting all the efforts made in the total synthesis of complex natural disesquiterpenoids.

Abstract
The methylenation reagent 1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl methyl sulfone 2 reacts with various aldehydes and ketones in the presence of t-BuOK (room temperature, 1 h) in dimethylformamide to give the corresponding terminal alkenes generally in high yields. For sensitive substrates, the reaction is better carried out at low temperature using sodium hexamethyldisilazide in 1,2-dimethoxyethane. The byproduct is easily removed from the products, and the reaction conditions are mild and practical. Reagent 2 can be easily prepared from commercially available 2-mercaptobenzimidazole 5 in 95% yield without any expensive reagents.

Abstract
A facile protocol for the synthesis of highly substituted fused γ-alkylidene butenolides using direct annulation of ketones with α-ketoesters, which proceeds through TiCl4-n-Bu3N mediated aldol addition followed by an intramolecular enol-lactonization/cyclization cascade, is reported. Diverse 6-5, 7-5 and 8-5 fused bicyclic γ-ylidene butenolides and highly substituted monocyclic analogs related to biologically relevant natural products were prepared from readily accessible ketone and α-ketoester building blocks. The highly step-economic cascade nature, good substrate scope, easy access to complex products with good to excellent yields, gram-scalability, demonstration of synthetic utility, and unambiguous structural confirmation through X-ray crystallography analyses and analogy are the salient features of this work.

Abstract
The dimeric lindenane sesquiterpenoids are mainly isolated from the plants of Chloranthaceae family. Structurally, they have a crowded molecular scaffold decorated with more than 11 stereogenic centers. Here we report divergent syntheses of eight dimeric lindenane sesquiterpenoids, shizukaols A, C, D, I, chlorajaponilide C, multistalide B, sarcandrolide J and sarglabolide I. In particular, we present a unified dimerization strategy utilizing a base-mediated thermal [4 + 2] cycloaddition between a common furyl diene, generated in situ, and various types of dienophiles. Accordingly, all the three types of lindenane [4 + 2] dimers with versatile biological activities are accessible, which would stimulate future probing of their pharmaceutical potential.

Abstract
Shizukaols possess a common heptacyclic framework containing more than ten contiguous stereocenters and potential biological activities. Here we report that the total syntheses of shizukaols A (1) and E (2), two lindenane-type dimers from the Chloranthaceae family, are achieved via a modified biomimetic Diels–Alder reaction. The common crucial biomimetic diene 23 and ethylene species (6, 17) are obtained through either a highly Z-selective olefination of α-siloxy ketone with ynolate anions or an intramolecular Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons olefination from commercially available Wieland–Miescher ketone (7). This synthetic approach here opens up practical avenues for the total syntheses of the intriguing Chloranthaceae family members, as well as the understanding of their relevant biological action in nature. Shizukaols, bioactive dimers naturally occurring in the Chloranthaceae family, possess a complex polycyclic framework with more than ten contiguous stereocenters. Here the authors report the total syntheses of shizukaols A and E achieved via a modified Diels–Alder reaction mimicking the biosynthetic pathway.

Abstract
This paper reports on the LGX fluorometric test for enzymatic MRSA/MSSA detection. It highlights the reasons rhodamines have been overlooked and also strategies to improve the synthesis of rhodamine-peptide conjugates. Evaluation of the LGX test for detection of MRSA/MSSA on surfaces is undertaken in the presence of potentially confounding E. coli and S. epidermidis for the first time.

Abstract
The [2 + 2] photocycloaddition is undisputedly the most important and most frequently used photochemical reaction. In this review, it is attempted to cover all recent aspects of [2 + 2] photocycloaddition chemistry with an emphasis on synthetically relevant, regio-, and stereoselective reactions. The review aims to comprehensively discuss relevant work, which was done in the field in the last 20 years (i.e., from 1995 to 2015). Organization of the data follows a subdivision according to mechanism and substrate classes. Cu(I) and PET (photoinduced electron transfer) catalysis are treated separately in sections 2 and 4 , whereas the vast majority of photocycloaddition reactions which occur by direct excitation or sensitization are divided within section 3 into individual subsections according to the photochemically excited olefin.

Abstract
A common enyne scaffold, resembling the structures of natural elemanes was found to be an excellent substrate for highly regioselective cycloisomerizations to produce diverse cyclopropane sesquiterpenoids. Platinum-catalysis was utilized to produce either lindenane or myliol cores, found in natural products, starting from enyne acetate 10 and its corresponding allene 12 respectively. Based on this concept, a second generation strategy allows the formal synthesis of sarcandralactone A.

Abstract
Numerous natural products possess ring systems and functionality for which Hajos-Parrish ketone isomers with a transposed methyl group (termed "iso-Hajos-Parrish ketones") would be of value. However, such building blocks have not been exploited to the same degree as the more typical Hajos-Parrish hydrindane. An efficient three-step synthesis of such materials was fueled by a simple method for the rapid preparation of highly functionalized cyclopentenones, several of which are new chemical entities that would be challenging to access through other approaches. Furthermore, one iso-Hajos-Parrish ketone was converted into two distinct natural product analogues and one natural product. As one indication of the value of these new building blocks, that latter target was obtained in 10 steps, having previously been accessed in 18 steps using the Hajos-Parrish ketone.

Abstract
The natural compound dendocarbin A, C15H22O3, is a sesquiterpene lactone isolated for the first time from Drimys winteri for var chilensis. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2₁2₁2₁ and its X-ray crystal structure confirmed the S/R character of the chiral centres at C-5/C-10 and C-9/C-11, respectively. The α-OH group at C-11 was found to be involved in intermolecular hydrogen bonding, defining chains along the <100> 2₁ screw axis.

Abstract
We report the first biomimetic syntheses of (-)-gochnatiolides A-C and (-)-ainsliadimer B based on our proposed biogenetic pathway. Our synthesis features one-pot cascade transformations including Saegusa oxidation, intermolecular Diels-Alder cycloaddition, and radical-mediated allylic oxidation, which allow for the rapid generation of (-)-gochnatiolides A-C in a collective manner. We also disclose an unprecedented "copper effect" on the stereochemical outcome of the radical-mediated allylic oxidation. Our synthetic endeavors led to the structural reassignment of (-)-gochnatiolide B. Ultimately, a biomimetic transformation from gochnatiolide B to ainsliadimer B was achieved through a remarkable direct enone hydration.
