Covalent Organic Framework-Structured Raman Probes for Ultrasensitive In Vivo Bioimaging

Organic Raman probes, including polymers and small molecules, have attracted great attention in biomedical imaging owing to their excellent biocompatibility. However, the development of organic Raman probes is usually hindered by a mismatch between their absorption spectra and wavelength-fixed excitation, which makes it difficult to achieve resonance excitation necessary to obtain strong Raman signals. Herein, we introduce a covalent organic framework (COF) into the fine absorption spectrum regulation of organic Raman probes, resulting in their significant Raman signal enhancement. In representative examples, a polymer poly(diketopyrrolopyrrole-p-phenylenediamine) (DPP-PD) and a small molecule azobenzene are transformed into the corresponding COF-structured Raman probes. Their absorption peaks show an accurate match of less than 5 nm with the NIR excitation. As such, the COF-structured Raman probes acquire highly sensitive bioimaging capabilities compared to their precursors with negligible signals. By further mechanism studies, we discover that the crystallinity and size of COFs directly affect the π-conjugation degree of Raman probes, thus changing their bandgaps and absorption spectra. Our study offers a universal and flexible method for improving the signal performance of organic Raman probes without changing their structural units, making it more convenient to obtain the highly sensitive organic Raman probes for in vivo bioimaging.

Tetracyanobutadiene Bridged Push-Pull Chromophores: Development of New Generation Optoelectronic Materials

This review describes the design strategies used for the synthesis of various tetracyanobutadiene bridged donor-acceptor molecular architectures by a click type [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) reaction sequence. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the tetracyanobutadiene bridged molecular architectures based on various moieties including diketopyrrolopyrrole, isoindigo, benzothiadiazole, pyrene, pyrazabole, truxene, boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY), phenothiazine, triphenylamine, thiazole and bisthiazole are summarized. Further, we discuss some important applications of the tetracyanobutadiene bridged derivatives in dye sensitized solar cells, bulk heterojunction solar cells and photothermal cancer therapy.

Assessing the effects of increasing conjugation length on exciton diffusion: from small molecules to the polymeric limit

Organic solar cells (OSC) generally contain long-chain π-conjugated polymers as donor materials, but, more recently, small-molecule donors have also attracted considerable attention. The nature of these compounds is of crucial importance concerning the various processes that determine device performance, among which singlet exciton diffusion is one of the most relevant. The efficiency of the diffusion mechanism depends on several aspects, from system morphology to electronic structure properties, which vary importantly with molecular size. In this work, we investigated the effects of conjugation length on the exciton diffusion length through electronic structure calculations and an exciton diffusion model. By applying extrapolation procedures to thiophene and phenylene vinylene oligomer series, we investigate their electronic and optical properties from the small-molecule point of view to the polymeric limit. Several properties are calculated as a function of oligomer size, including transition energies, absorption and emission spectra, reorganization energies, exciton coupling and Förster radii. Finally, an exciton diffusion model is used to estimate diffusion lengths as a function of oligomer size and for the polymeric limit showing agreement with experimental data. Results also show that longer conjugation lengths correlate with longer exciton diffusion lengths in spite of also being associated with shorter exciton lifetimes.

Theoretical Studies of Photophysical Properties of D-π-A-π-D-Type Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Molecules for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes and Organic Solar Cells

A series of D-π-A diketopyrrolopyrrole(DPP)-based small molecules were designed for organic light-emitting diode(OLEDs) and organic solar cell(OSCs) applications. Applying the PBE0/6-31G(d,p) method, the ground state geometry and relevant electronic properties were investigated. The first excited singlet state geometry and the absorption and fluorescent spectra were simulated at the TD-PBE0/6-31G(d,p) level. The calculated results revealed that the photophysical properties were affected through the introduction of different end groups. Furthermore, the electronic transitions corresponding to absorption and emission exhibited an intramolecular charge transfer feature. Our results suggest that the designed molecules acted not only as luminescent for OLEDs, but also as donor materials in OSCs. Moreover, they can also be used as potential electron transfer materials for OLEDs and OSCs.

Molecular Engineering of a Donor-Acceptor Polymer To Realize Single Band Absorption toward a Red-Selective Thin-Film Organic Photodiode

Herein, we explore the strategy of realizing a red-selective thin-film organic photodiode (OPD) by synthesizing a new copolymer with a highly selective red-absorption feature. PCZ-Th-DPP, with phenanthrocarbazole (PCZ) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as donor and acceptor units, respectively, was strategically designed/synthesized based on a time-dependent density functional theory calculation, which predicted the significant suppression of the band II absorption of PCZ-Th-DPP due to the extremely efficient intramolecular charge transfer. We demonstrate that the synthesized PCZ-Th-DPP exhibits not only a high absorption coefficient within the red-selective band I region, as theoretically predicted, but also a preferential face-on intermolecular structure in the thin-film state, which is beneficial for vertical charge extraction as an outcome of a glancing incidence X-ray diffraction study. By employing PCZ-Th-DPP as a photoactive layer of Schottky OPD, to fully match its absorption characteristic to the spectral response of the red-selective OPD, we demonstrate a genuine red-selective specific detectivity in the order of 10¹² Jones while maintaining a thin active layer thickness of ∼300 nm. This work demonstrates the possibility of realizing a full color image sensor with a synthetic approach to the constituting active layers without optical manipulation.

Symmetrical N-acylsubstituted dihydrazones containing bithiophene core--Photophysical, electrochemical and thermal characterization

Four symmetrical N-acylsubstituted dihydrazones containing bithiophene core were synthesized from condensation of 2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-dicarboxyaldehyde with benzoic, isonicotinoyl, 2-thiophenic and 2-furoic hydrazide. The obtained compounds were characterized through the data from (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analysis, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements. Additionally, the electronic properties including orbital energies and resulting energy gaps were calculated by density functional theory (DFT). Their thermal behavior was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). They were thermal sable up to 320°C. The prepared N-acylsubstituted dihydrazones emitted light with λ(em) in the range of 499-530 nm in solution, whereas, in solid state as blend with PMMA blue emission was observed. They undergo quasi-reversible and irreversible electrochemical reduction and oxidation processes, respectively. Additionally, the selected compounds were tested preliminary as component of active layer in organic photovoltaic cells. The highest value of power conversion efficiency, equal to 1.68% under simulated 100 mW/cm(2) AM 1.5G irradiation was found for device with the architecture ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM:FBTH (1:2:2)/Al.

Broadband photoresponse promoted by interfacial electron transfer in diketopyrrolopyrrole-based compound/ZnO hybrid nanocomposites
