Changes in macroinvertebrate community structure provide evidence of neutral mine drainage impacts

Assessment of the impacts of GABA and AChE targeting pesticides on freshwater invertebrate family richness in English Rivers

Globally, riverine system biodiversity is threatened by a range of stressors, spanning pollution, sedimentation, alterations to water flow, and climate change. Pesticides have been associated with population level impacts on freshwater invertebrates for acute high-level exposures, but far less is known about the chronic impact of episodic exposure to specific classes of pesticides or their mixtures. Here we employed the use of the UK Environment Agency's monitoring datasets over 40 years (covering years 1980 to 2019) to assess the impacts of AChE (acetylcholinesterase) and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptor targeting pesticides on invertebrate family richness at English river sites. Concentrations of AChE and GABA pesticides toxic to freshwater invertebrates occurred (measured) across 18 of the 66 river sites assessed. For one of the three river sites (all found in the Midlands region of England) where data recorded over the past 40 years were sufficient for robust modelling studies, both AChE and GABA pesticides associated with invertebrate family richness. Here, where AChE total pesticide concentrations were classified as high, 46 of 64 invertebrate families were absent, and where GABA total pesticide concentration were classified as high, 16 of 64 invertebrate families were absent. Using a combination of field evidence and laboratory toxicity thresholds for population relevant endpoints we identify families of invertebrates most at risk in the selected English rivers to AChE and GABA pesticides. We, furthermore, provide strong evidence that the absence of the invertebrate family Polycentropodidae (caddisfly) from one field site is due to exposure effects to AChE pesticides.

Sulfate and metals removal from acid mine drainage in a horizontal anaerobic immobilized biomass (HAIB) reactor

The acid mine drainage (AMD) can causes negative impacts to the environment. Physico-chemical methods to treat AMD can have high operational costs. Through passive biological methods, such as anaerobic reactors, sulfate reduction, and recovery of metals are promoted. This study evaluated the performance of a horizontal anaerobic immobilized biomass (HAIB) reactor for the treatment of synthetic AMD using polyurethane foam as support material, and anaerobic sludge as inoculum. Ethanol was used as an electron donor for sulfate reduction, resulting in an influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the range of 500-1,500 mg/L and COD/sulfate ratio at 1. A gradual increase of sulfate and COD concentration was applied that resulted in COD removal efficiencies higher than 78%, and sulfate removal efficiencies of 80%. Higher sulfate and COD concentrations associated with higher hydraulic retention times (36 h) proved to be a better strategy for sulfate removal. The HAIB reactor was able to accommodate an increase in the SLR up to 2.25 g SO₄^2-/L d^-1 which achieved the greatest performance on the entire process. Moreover, the reactor proved a suitable alternative for reaching high levels of metal removal (86.95 for Zn, 98.79% for Fe, and 99.59% for Cu).

The Impact of Metal-Rich Sediments Derived from Mining on Freshwater Stream Life

Metal-rich sediments have the potential to impair life in freshwater streams and rivers and, thereby, to inhibit recovery of ecological conditions after any remediation of mine water discharges. Sediments remain metal-rich over long time periods and have long-term potential ecotoxicological interactions with local biota, unless the sediments themselves are physically removed or replaced by less metal-rich sediment. Laboratory-derived environmental quality standards are difficult to apply to the field situation, as many complicating factors exist in the real world. Therefore, there is a strong case to consider other, field-relevant, measures of toxic effects as alternatives to laboratory-derived standards and to seek better biological tools to detect, diagnose and ideally predict community-level ecotoxicological impairment. Hence, this review concentrated on field measures of toxic effects of metal-rich sediment in freshwater streams, with less emphasis on laboratory-based toxicity testing approaches. To this end, this review provides an overview of the impact of metal-rich sediments on freshwater stream life, focusing on biological impacts linked to metal contamination.
