Anthocyanins of Delonix Regia Floral Petals: A Novel Approach on Fluorescence Enhancement, Forster Resonance Energy Transfer Mechanism and Photostability Studies for Optoelectronic Applications

In this work, we focused on extracting the anthocyanin dye in acetone, butanol, ethanol, and water solvents from Delonix regia flowers by a simple maceration extraction process. The identification of functional group analysis, vibrational studies, energy transfer mechanisms, optoelectronic properties, photostability studies, FRET-assisted potential light emissions and photometric properties of the anthocyanin dyes are successively investigated. FTIR spectroscopy and vibrational studies have confirmed the existence of polyphenolic groups in 2-phenyl chromenylium (anthocyanin) dyes. The optoelectronic results show the least direct bandgap (2.04 eV), indirect bandgap (1.55 eV), Urbach energy (0.380 eV), high refractive index (1.20), dielectric constant (2.794), and high optical conductivity (1.954 × 103 S/m) for the anthocyanin dye extracted found in water solvent. The photoluminescence properties such as Stoke's shift, high quantum yield, and lifetime results show that anthocyanin dyes are promising candidates for red-LEDs and optical materials. The absorption and emission spectra of the anthocyanin dyes follow the mirror image rule and the Franck-Condon factor exists between vibrational energy levels corresponding to all the electronic transitions. The excellent correspondence between the absorption and emission spectra reinforces that the anthocyanins are efficient (46%) FRET probes. Further, photometric properties such as CIE, CRI, CCT and colour purity results of anthocyanins in all studied solvents revealed that this material exhibits orange to red shades (x = 0.48 → 0.54 and y = 0.36 →0.45) and is well suitable for have great potential in the manufacturing of Organic-LEDs and other optoelectronic device applications.

A new class of teraryl-based AIEgen for highly selective imaging of intracellular lipid droplets and its detection in advanced-stage human cervical cancer tissues

Lipid droplets (LDs) have drawn much attention in recent years. They serve as the energy reservoir of cells and also play an important role in numerous physiological processes. Furthermore, LDs are found to be associated with several pathological conditions, including cancer and diabetes mellitus. Herein, we report a new class of teraryl-based donor-acceptor-appended aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen), 6a, for selective staining of intracellular LDs in in vitro live 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and the HeLa cancer cell line. In addition, AIEgen 6a was found to be capable of staining and quantifying the LD accumulation in the tissue sections of advanced-stage human cervical cancer patients. Unlike commercial LD staining dyes Nile Red, BODIPY and LipidTOX, AIEgen 6a showed a high Stokes shift (195 nm), a good fluorescence lifetime decay of 12.7 ns, and LD staining persisting for nearly two weeks.

Benzoquinoline Derivatives: An Attractive Approach to Newly Small Molecules with Anticancer Activity

This study presents the synthesis, structural characterization, and in vitro evaluation of anticancer activity of some newly benzo[f]quinoline derivatives. The synthesis is facile and efficient, involving two steps: quaternization of nitrogen heterocycle followed by a [3+2] dipolar cycloaddition reaction. The synthesized compounds were characterized by FTIR, NMR, and X-ray diffraction on monocrystal in the case of compounds 6c and 7c. An in vitro single-dose anticancer assay of eighteen benzo[f]quinoline compounds, quaternary salts, and cycloadducts, was performed. The results showed that the most active compounds were quaternary salts 3d and 3f with aromatic R substituents. Quaternary salt 3d revealed non-selective activity against all types of cancer cells, while salt 3f exhibited a highly selective activity against leukemia cells. Compound 3d also presented remarkable cytotoxic efficiency against four distinct types of cancer cells-namely, non-small cell lung cancer HOP-92, melanoma LOX IMVI, melanoma SK-MEL-5, and breast cancer MDA-MB-468. Compound 3f was selected for five-dose screening. The study also includes SAR correlations.

The syntheses, photophysical properties and pH-sensitive studies of heterocyclic azo dyes bearing coumarin-thiophene-thiazole

This study reports the synthesis of two novel thiazolylazo dyes (4 and 5) bearing coumarin-thiophene moiety. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to investigate the photophysical properties of 4 and 5 in different solvents. The dyes displayed good potential for hydroxide sensing in different mediums. The reversibility was also studied, and it was found that 4 and 5 could be reverted to their original state by adding acid. Furthermore, the acidochromic properties were studied in protic and aprotic media. Both dyes displayed a good acidochromic response in DCM. Moreover, 4 and 5 were investigated for pH sensing, and it was found that both compounds displayed changes in absorption spectra in a basic media. The theoretical calculations were carried out to investigate the deprotonation and protonation mechanisms using density functional theory (DFT). The thermal properties of the dyes were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed good thermal stability up to around 200 °C.

A Review on Synthetic Approaches of Phenanthridine

Abstract:

The phenanthridine family is widely found in medicinal chemistry and material science because of the biological activity and its presence in a variety of significant natural products and synthetic dye stuffs. The phenanthridine has many clinical applications, for e.g., being used as an anticancer agent, possessing antibacterial, antiprotozoal, pharmaceutical, and optoelectronic properties. Many methods have been reported for the synthesis of phenanthridine and phenanthridine alkaloids, such as Pd catalyzed C-C bond formation, a reaction involving C-H activation, radical, microwave-assisted, transition metal-catalyzed, one-pot cascade, benzyne mediated, photochemical, hypervalent iodine promoted methods, etc. Here, we have summarized the literature data from 2014 to the present concerning novel or improved synthetic approaches.

1H-Pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinolines: Synthesis and Properties over 100 Years of Research

This paper summarises a little over 100 years of research on the synthesis and the photophysical and biological properties of 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinolines that was published in the years 1911–2021. The main methods of synthesis are described, which include Friedländer condensation, synthesis from anthranilic acid derivatives, multicomponent synthesis and others. The use of this class of compounds as potential fluorescent sensors and biologically active compounds is shown. This review intends to summarize the abovementioned aspects of 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline chemistry. Some of the results that are presented in this publication come from the laboratories of the authors of this review.

Functionalized D/A–A–D quinolines for application in solution-processable p-channel organic field-effect transistors

New functionalized quinolines with a D/A–A–D architecture and pi-end-groups at terminals were designed and synthesized. OFETs fabricated from compounds with a D–A–D architecture exhibited p-channel transistor characteristics with high hole mobilities.

Synthesis and investigation on optical and electrochemical properties of 2,4-diaryl-9-chloro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroacridines

A facile synthesis of 2,4-diaryl-9-chloro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroacridine derivatives is reported which is based on POCl₃-mediated cyclodehydration followed by double Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. The absorption and fluorescence properties of the obtained products were investigated and their HOMO/LUMO energy levels were estimated by cyclic voltammetry measurements. Besides, density functional theory calculations were carried out for further exploration of their electronic properties.

Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties of Highly π-Conjugated Bipolar Carbazole-1,3,4-Oxadiazole-based D-π-A Type of Efficient Deep Blue Fluorescent Dye

In this contribution, we have designed and synthesized a novel carbazole-1,3,4-oxadiazole based bipolar fluorophore (E)-2-(4-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)styryl)phenyl)-5-(4-(tertbutyl) phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (CBZ-OXA-IV). Wittig reaction is utilised for the synthesis of the designed bipolar target compound CBZ-OXA-IV. ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FT-IR and ESI-MS results confirmed the designed chemical structure of the fluorophore CBZ-OXA-IV. The photophysical properties have been investigated in detail using UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence spectroscopy. Also, the photoluminescence studies on solid state samples (as thin films) were carried out. The CBZ-OXA-IV dye emits intense deep blue fluorescence with observed absorption and emission maxima occurring are at 353 nm and 470 nm, respectively. Fluorophore CBZ-OXA-IV has shown high Stokes shift of 7052 cm^-1. The experimentally measured optical band gap ([Formula: see text]) value is found to be 3.01 eV and the fluorescence quantum yields (Φ_f) is 0.40. The intramolecular charge transfer property of CBZ-OXA-IV dye was examined by using photophysical properties such as absorption, emission in different solvents of different varying polarities. In addition, Density Functional Theory computations are studied in detail including the MEP surface plots and natural bond orbital analysis. The electrochemical properties have been investigated in detail by using cyclic voltammetry measurements. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement results display a high thermal stability with decomposition temperature (T_d5%) 387 °C and a large glass transition temperature (Tg) of 98 °C. The obtained results demonstrated that the novel bipolar fluorophore CBZ-OXA-IV could play an important role in organic optoelectronics and possibly can be utilized as bipolar transport materials for electroluminescence applications in optoelectronic devices/OLEDs.

2,4-Bis(arylethynyl)-9-chloro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroacridines: synthesis and photophysical properties

Acridine derivatives have attracted considerable interest in numerous areas owing to their attractive physical and chemical properties. Herein, starting from readily available anthranilic acid, an efficient synthesis of 2,4-bis(arylethynyl)-9-chloro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroacridine derivatives was accomplished via a one-pot double Sonogashira cross-coupling method. The UV-visible absorption and emission properties of the synthesized molecules have been examined. Additionally, theoretical studies based on density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d)) were carried out.

Synthesis of Green/Blue Light Emitting Quinolines by Aza-D-A Reaction Using InCl3 Catalyst

An efficient InCl3-catalyzed sequential reaction of aromatic amines, aromatic aldehydes and functionalized alkynes leading to the formation of new quinoline derivatives exhibiting significant fluorescence activities is described. The photophysical investigations of quinolines were carried out by absorption and photoluminescence measurements. One particular compound 4 h having maximum intensity, emitting green colour (Φ = 0.78) with average life time of 6.20 ns was the best amongst the tested compounds. The presence of the amino group at the 4-aryl substituent of the quinoline backbone played an important role in executing the Povarov cyclization successfully and enhancing the flourescence properties of the newly synthesized quinolines.

Application of the Povarov Reaction in Biaryls under Iron Catalysis for the General Synthesis of Dibenzo[a,c]Acridines

A modified Povarov reaction involving 2'-alkynylbiaryl-2-carbaldehydes and aryl amines with tandem oxidation was performed using catalytic FeCl₃. The outcome was an efficient general synthesis of dibenzo[a,c]acridines with moderate to high yields. This method offers simplicity in the preparation of substrates, diverse substrate scope, and high atom economy. The generality of the protocol was verified by synthesizing a tribenzo[a,c,h]acridine derivative. Photophysical properties of the synthesized compounds were also studied. The compounds absorb UV light typically in the range 230-330 nm and emit in the visible range of 400-420 nm.

Synthesis, photophysical, quantum chemical investigation, linear and non-linear optical properties of coumarin derivative: Optoelectronic and optical limiting application

In order to develop a new photostable, light emitting and highly efficient synthesized material to exhibit display property and non-linear optical active materials with good band gap energy, we have synthesized molecule via simple catalytic method. The photophysical property of studied molecule in various organic solvents having different polarity exhibited considerably acceptable results. The results of quantum yield, lifetime and large Stoke shift shows the compound is a good promising candidate for the laser dyes and light emitting diode color filters. The energy band gap was determined by both experimentally and theoretically which is found to be an average of 3.2 eV which is well matched to the semiconducting materials band gap. The non-linear optical absorption properties of the synthesized molecule are dissolved in suitable solvents had been investigated using Z-scan technique. We have determined the sign and magnitude of nonlinear absorption coefficient by the method of open aperture Z-scan setup using an Nd: YAG continuous wave laser at 532 nm. The open aperture Z-scan profiles clearly demonstrate the presence of reverse saturable absorption kind nonlinearity in the investigated compound and are due to the two-photon absorption. Results of the non-linear optical studies confirm that the studied compound is more latent applications for optical limiting in continuous wave regime. Further, the optoelectronic properties were investigated the international commission on illumination, color rendering index, color purity, and correlated color temperature is results of the studied molecule in all studied solvents revels that this compound exhibits blue to cyan color and is suitable for organic light emitting diode which can be preferably used for daylight applications.

Synthesis of Solution-Processable Donor-Acceptor Pyranone Dyads for White Organic Light-Emitting Devices

A series of donor-acceptor pyranones (3a-m, 4a-h) were synthesized using α-oxo-ketene- S, S-acetal as the synthon for their application as emissive materials for energy-saving organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Among them, five pyranones 3f, 3g, 3h, 3m, and 4e exhibited highly bright fluorescence in the solid state and weak or no emission in the solution state. Photophysical analysis of these dyes revealed that only 3f and 3m showed aggregation-induced emission behavior in a THF/water mixture (0-99%) with varying water fractions ( f_w) leading to bright fluorescence covering the entire visible region, while other derivatives 3g, 3h, and 4e did not show any fluorescence signal. The computational studies of the compounds revealed that the longer wavelength absorption originates from HOMO to LUMO electronic excitation. These dyes exhibited good thermal stability with 5% weight loss temperature in the range of 218-347 °C. The potential application of the donor-acceptor pyranone dyads was demonstrated by fabrication of solution-processed OLEDs. Remarkably, OLED devices prepared using highly emissive compounds 6-(anthracen-9-yl)-4-(methylthio)-2-oxo-2 H-pyran-3-carbonitrile (3m) and 6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4-(methylthio)-2-oxo-2 H-pyran-3-carbonitrile (3f) displayed pure white emission with CIE coordinates of (0.29, 0.31) and (0.32, 0.32), respectively. Additionally, the resultant devices exhibited external quantum efficiencies of 1.9 and 1.2% at 100 cd m^-2, respectively.

Palladium-Catalyzed Regioselective Alkoxylation via C-H Bond Activation in the Dihydrobenzo[c]acridine Series

5,6-Dihydrobenzo[c]acridine belongs to the large aza-polycyclic compound family. Such molecules are not fully planar due to the presence of a partially hydrogenated ring. This paper describes the first Pd-catalyzed alkoxylation via C-H bond activation of variously substituted 5,6-dihydrobenzo[c]acridines. We determined suitable conditions to promote the selective formation of C-O bonds using 10% Pd(OAc)2, PhI(OAc)2 (2 eq.) and MeOH as the best combination of oxidant and solvent, respectively. Under these conditions, 5,6-dihydrobenzo[c]acridines bearing substituents at both rings A and D were successfully functionalized, giving access to polysubstitutited acridine motifs.

Synthesis and characterization of high quantum yield and oscillator strength 6-chloro-2-(4-cynophenyl)-4-phenyl quinoline (cl-CN-DPQ) organic phosphor for solid-state lighting

A novel blue luminescent 6-chloro-2-(4-cynophenyl) substituted diphenyl quinoline (Cl-CN DPQ) organic phosphor has been synthesized by the acid-catalyzed Friedlander reaction and then characterized to confirm structural, optical and thermal properties. Structural properties of Cl-CN-DPQ were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) spectroscopy. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of different functional groups and bond stretching. ¹ H-NMR and ¹³ C-NMR confirmed the formation of an organic Cl-CN-DPQ compound. X-ray diffraction study provided its crystalline nature. The surface morphology of Cl-CN-DPQ was analyzed by SEM, while EDAX spectroscopy revealed the elemental analysis. Differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) disclosed its thermal stability up to 250°C. The optical properties of Cl-CN-DPQ were investigated by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Cl-CN-DPQ exhibits intense blue emission at 434 nm in a solid-state crystalline powder with CIE co-ordinates (0.157, 0.027), when excited at 373 nm. Cl-CN-DPQ shows remarkable Stokes shift in the range 14800-5100 cm^-1 , which is the characteristic feature of intense light emission. A narrow full width at half-maximum (FWHM) value of PL spectra in the range 42-48 nm was observed. Oscillator strength, energy band gap, quantum yield, and fluorescence energy yield were also examined using UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra. These results prove its applications towards developing organic luminescence devices and displays, organic phosphor-based solar cells and displays, organic lasers, chemical sensors and many more.

Base-Promoted Selective Synthesis of 2H-Pyranones and Tetrahydronaphthalenes via Domino Reactions

A highly efficient domino protocol has been developed for the synthesis of 6-aryl-4-(methylthio/amine-1-yl)-2-oxo-2H-pyran-3-carbonitriles and 4-aryl-2-(amine-1-yl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene-1-carbonitriles from simple and readily available α-aroylketene dithioacetals, malononitrile, secondary amines, and cyclohexanone. This elegant domino process involved consecutive addition-elimination, intramolecular cyclization, and ring opening and closing sequences. Notably, in situ generated 2-imino-4-(methylthio/amine-1-yl)-6-aryl-2H-pyran-3-carbonitrile plays multiple roles in the construction of various novel polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

New visible light excitable donor-acceptor 7-hydroxy-coumarins as blue fluorescent probes for selective staining of vacuoles in yeasts and L. donovani

In order to address the existing limitations of the commercially available fluorescent probe CMAC (7-amino-4-chloromethylcoumarin), a new series of highly fluorescent donor-acceptor 7-hydroxy-coumarin derivatives was prepared and these derivatives were used as vacuole specific fluorescent probes for live cell imaging of unicellular parasitic protozoa L. donovani promastigotes and yeast cells S. pombe and S. cerevisiae. The synthesized 7-hydroxy-coumarins exhibited interesting photophysical properties and have advantages such as excitation in the visible region, good water solubility, photo-stability, good quantum yield and low cytotoxicity.

Discovery of biaryl-4-carbonitriles as antihyperglycemic agents that may act through AMPK-p38 MAPK pathway

A series of functionalized biaryl-4-carbonitriles was synthesized in three steps and evaluated for PTP-1B inhibitory activity. Among the synthesized compounds, four biaryls 6a-d showed inhibition (IC50 58-75 μM) against in vitro PTP-1B assay possibly due to interaction with amino acid residues Lys120, Tyr46 through hydrogen bonding and aromatic-aromatic interactions, respectively. Two biaryl-4-carbonitriles 6b and 6c showed improved glucose tolerance, fasting as well as postprandial blood glucose, serum total triglycerides, and increased high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol in SLM, STZ, STZ-S and C57BL/KsJ-db/db animal models. The bioanalysis of 4'-bromo-2,3-dimethyl-5-(piperidin-1-yl)biphenyl-4-carbonitrile (6b) revealed that like insulin, it increased 2-deoxyglucose uptake in skeletal muscle cells (L6 and C2C12 myotubes). The compound 6b significantly up-regulated the genes related to the insulin signaling pathways like AMPK, MAPK including glucose transporter-4 (GLUT-4) gene in muscle tissue of C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice. Furthermore, it was observed that the compound 6b up-regulated PPARα, UCP2 and HNF4α, which are key regulator of glucose, lipid, and fatty acid metabolism. Western blot analysis of the compound 6b showed that it significantly increased the phosphorylation of AMPK and p38 MAPK and ameliorated glucose uptake in C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice through the AMPK-p38 MAPK pathway.

Diversity-oriented general protocol for the synthesis of privileged oxygen scaffolds: pyrones, coumarins, benzocoumarins and naphthocoumarins

A new general methodology for the synthesis of various functionalized privileged oxygen heterocyclic scaffolds, viz. pyrones, coumarins, and benzannulated coumarins, is developed. The synthesis proceeds through carbanion-induced ring transformation of lactones with various methylene carbonyl compounds followed by DDQ-mediated unprecedented oxidative cleavage of oxaylidenes intermediates. Studies of the mechanism of the conversions of oxaylidene intermediates into corresponding carbonyl compounds in the presence of DDQ revealed that the reactions took place via the formation of a Michael adduct instead of an intermolecular charge transfer complex. The methodology offers the fabrication of diverse privileged scaffolds with tolerance for many functional groups onto the oxygen heterocyclic molecular framework.
