Plant-Based Bimetallic Silver-Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles: A Comprehensive Perspective of Synthesis, Biomedical Applications, and Future Trends

The universal emphasis on the study of green nanotechnology has led to biologically harmless uses of wide-ranged nanomaterials. Nanotechnology deals with the production of nanosized particles with regular morphology and properties. Various researches have been directed on nanomaterial synthesis by physical, chemical, and biological means. Understanding the safety of both environment and in vivo, a biogenic approach particularly plant-derived synthesis is the best strategy. Silver-zinc oxide nanoparticles are most effective. Moreover, these engineered nanomaterials via morphological modifications attain improved performance in antimicrobial, biomedical, environmental, and therapeutic applications. This article evaluates manufacturing strategies for silver-zinc oxide nanoparticles via plant-derived means along with highlighting their broad range of uses in bionanotechnology.

ZnO encapsulants: Design and new view

ZnO encapsulants with capsular configurations (e.g. a large inner cavity, sizeable pore, low density and high specific surface area) have attracted considerable attention as effective and promising candidates in various fields owing to the merits of ZnO (e.g. UV protection, photoelectric catalysis, gas sensitivity, antibacterial effect). However, the research on ZnO encapsulants has not yet reached the eruptive stage. This probably due to their high morphological flexibility and relatively low structural strength that is not easy to control during the preparation process. In this review, the principles of cavity-generating and pore-forming are firstly discussed in depth after going through the synthesis of hollow ZnO in the past ten years. Moreover, the regulation of cavity diameter and pore size of different synthetic strategies is investigated. Then, the research progress of ZnO encapsulants is debated in detail from the loading and release of functional materials and the corresponding characterization. Finally, some potential designs and new views on the future research and development of ZnO encapsulants are concluded.

Significant Enhancement of Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 with H2O over ZnO by the Formation of Basic Zinc Carbonate

Electron-hole pair separation efficiency and adsorption performance of photocatalysts to CO₂ are the two key factors affecting the performance of photocatalytic CO₂ reduction with H₂O. Distinct from conventional promoter addition, this study proposed a novel approach to address these two issues by tuning the own surface features of semiconductor photocatalyst. Three ZnO samples with different morphologies, surface area, and defect content were fabricated by varying preparation methods, characterized by XRD, TEM, and room-temperature PL spectra, and tested in photoreduction of CO₂ with H₂O. The results show that the as-prepared porous ZnO nanosheets exhibit a much higher activity for photoreduction of CO₂ with H₂O when compared to ZnO nanoparticles and nanorods attributed to the existence of more defect sites, that is, zinc and oxygen vacancies. These defects would lower the combination rate of electron-hole pair as well as promote the formation of basic zinc carbonate by Lewis acid-base interaction, which is the active intermediate species for photoreduction of CO₂. ZnO nanoparticles and ZnO nanorods with few defects show weak adsorption for CO₂ leading to the inferior photocatalytic activities. This work provides new insight on the CO₂ activation under light irradiation.

In Situ Study on the Evolution of Multimodal Particle Size Distributions of ZnO Quantum Dots: Some General Rules for the Occurrence of Multimodalities

Properties of small semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) are strongly governed by their size. Precise characterization is a key requirement for tailored dispersities and thus for high-quality devices. Results of a careful analysis of particle size distributions (PSDs) of ZnO are presented combining advantages of UV/vis absorption spectroscopy, analytical ultracentrifugation, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Our study reveals that careful cross-validation of these different methods is mandatory to end up with reliable resolution. PSDs of ZnO NPs are multimodal on a size range of 2-8 nm, a finding that is not yet sufficiently addressed. In the second part of our work the evolution of PSDs was studied using in situ SAXS. General principles for the appearance of multimodalities covering a temperature range between 15 and 45 °C were found which are solely determined by the aging state indicated by the size of the medium-sized fraction. Whenever this fraction exceeds a critical diameter, a new multimodality is identified, independent of the particular time-temperature combination. A fraction of larger particles aggregates first before a fraction of smaller particles is detected. Fixed multimodalities have not yet been addressed adequately and could only be evidenced due to careful size analysis.
