Intrinsic Elastomer with Remarkable Dielectric Constant via Elastification of Relaxor Ferroelectric Polymer

High-dielectric-constant elastomers always play a critical role in the development of wearable electronics for actuation, energy storage, and sensing; therefore, there is an urgent need for effective strategies to enhance dielectric constants. The present methods mainly involve adding inorganic or conductive fillers to the polymer elastomers, however, the addition of fillers causes a series of problems, such as large dielectric loss, increased modulus, and deteriorating interface conditions. Here, the elastification of relaxor ferroelectric polymers is investigated through slight cross-linking, aiming to obtain intrinsic elastomers with high-dielectric constants. By cross-linking of the relaxor ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-ter-trifluoroethylene-ter-chlorofluoroethylene) with a long soft chain cross-linker, a relaxor ferroelectric elastomer with an enhanced dielectric constant is obtained, twice that of the pristine relaxor ferroelectric polymer and surpassing all reported intrinsic elastomers. This elastomer maintains its high-dielectric constant over a wide temperature range and exhibits robust mechanical fatigue resistance, chemical stability, and thermal stability. Moreover, the ferroelectricity of the elastomer remains stable under strains up to 80%. This study offers a simple and effective way to enhance the dielectric constant of intrinsic elastomers, thus facilitating advancements in soft robots, biosensors, and wearable electronics.

Elastic Relaxor Ferroelectric by Thiol-ene Click Reaction

As ferroelectrics hold significance and application prospects in wearable devices, the elastification of ferroelectrics becomes more and more important. Nevertheless, achieving elastic ferroelectrics requires stringent synthesis conditions, while the elastification of relaxor ferroelectric materials remains unexplored, presenting an untapped potential for utilization in energy storage and actuation for wearable electronics. The thiol-ene click reaction offers a mild and rapid reaction platform to prepare functional polymers. Therefore, we employed this approach to obtain an elastic relaxor ferroelectric by crosslinking an intramolecular carbon-carbon double bonds (CF=CH) polymer matrix with multiple thiol groups via a thiol-ene click reaction. The resulting elastic relaxor ferroelectric demonstrates pronounced relaxor-type ferroelectric behaviour. This material exhibits low modulus, excellent resilience, and fatigue resistance, maintaining a stable ferroelectric response even under strains up to 70 %. This study introduces a straightforward and efficient approach for the construction of elastic relaxor ferroelectrics, thereby expanding the application possibilities in wearable electronics.

Hydrolysis of norfloxacin in the hyporheic zone: kinetics and pathways

Understanding the hydrolysis behavior and pathway of norfloxacin (NOR) in the hyporheic zone (HZ) is important for predicting its environmental persistence. Therefore, the effects of different environmental factors on NOR hydrolysis were investigated, and the hydrolysis pathway of NOR in the HZ was determined by DFT calculations and UPLC/TOF-MS. The hydrolysis process of NOR was consistent with the first-order kinetic. The experiment of environmental factors showed that DO was an important factor to affect NOR hydrolysis, and its hydrolysis rate was positively correlated with DO concentration. The superoxide radical (·O2-) was the main active species for NOR hydrolysis. The hydrolysis rates of NOR under neutral and alkaline conditions were higher than that under acidic conditions in both aerobic and anoxic environments. The ions of Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, CO32-, and NO3- in simulated water samples inhibited the hydrolysis of NOR, while Cl- promoted its hydrolysis. In addition, the electronegativity of NOR was determined by DFT calculations, and it was speculated that the active sites of NOR hydrolysis were mainly located in the piperazine ring and quinolone ring. The main hydrolysis pathway of NOR in aerobic environment was piperazine ring cracking and quinolone ring decomposition, and that in anoxic environment was piperazine ring cracking. The results are of great significance to evaluate the environmental fate of NOR in the HZ and provide a theoretical basis for further understanding the degradation and governance of fluoroquinolones in water environment.

Preparation of ECTFE Porous Membrane for Dehumidification of Gaseous Streams through Membrane Condenser

Due to the good hydrophobicity and chemical resistance of poly(ethylene trifluoroethylene) (ECTFE), it has been an attractive potential material for microfiltration, membrane distillation and more. However, few porous hydrophobic ECTFE membranes were prepared by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) for membrane condenser applications. In this work, the diluent, di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP), was selected to prepare the dope solutions. The calculated Hassen solubility parameter indicated that ECTFE has good compatibility with DnOP. The corresponding thermodynamic phase diagram was established, and it has been mutually verified with the bi-continuous structure observed in the SEM images. At 30 wt% ECTFE, the surface contact angle and liquid entry pressure reach their maximum values of 139.5° and 0.71 MPa, respectively. In addition, some other basic membrane properties, such as pore size, porosity, and mechanical properties, were determined. Finally, the prepared ECTFE membranes were tested using a homemade membrane condenser setup. When the polymer content is 30 wt%, the corresponding results are better; the water recovery and condensed water yield is 17.6% and 1.86 kg m⁻² h⁻¹, respectively.

High-entropy polymer produces a giant electrocaloric effect at low fields

More than a decade of research on the electrocaloric (EC) effect has resulted in EC materials and EC multilayer chips that satisfy a minimum EC temperature change of 5 K required for caloric heat pumps^1-3. However, these EC temperature changes are generated through the application of high electric fields^4-8 (close to their dielectric breakdown strengths), which result in rapid degradation and fatigue of EC performance. Here we report a class of EC polymer that exhibits an EC entropy change of 37.5 J kg^-1 K^-1 and a temperature change of 7.5 K under 50 MV m^-1, a 275% enhancement over the state-of-the-art EC polymers under the same field strength. We show that converting a small number of the chlorofluoroethylene groups in poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) terpolymer into covalent double bonds markedly increases the number of the polar entities and enhances the polar-nonpolar interfacial areas of the polymer. The polar phases in the polymer adopt a loosely correlated, high-entropy state with a low energy barrier for electric-field-induced switching. The polymer maintains performance for more than one million cycles at the low fields necessary for practical EC cooling applications, suggesting that this strategy may yield materials suitable for use in caloric heat pumps.

Enhanced energy storage density of all-organic fluoropolymer composite dielectric via introducing crosslinked structure

Polymer-based dielectrics have been attracted much attention to flexible energy storage devices due to their rapid charge–discharge rate, flexibility, lightness and compactness. Nevertheless, the energy storage performance of these dielectric polymers was limited by the weak dielectric breakdown properties. Crosslinked structure has been proven efficient to enhance breakdown strength (E_b) and charge–discharge efficiency (η) of polymer film capacitors. However, crosslinked networks usually lead to low electric displacement of dielectric capacitors, which greatly restrict their energy storage density (U_d). In this work, we present a tri-layered composite via layer-by-layer casting technology, where crosslinked polyvinylidene fluoride (c-PVDF) was used as the inter-layer to offer high breakdown strength, and the outer ternary fluoropolymer layers with high dielectric constant could provide high electric displacement. The optimal tri-layered composites exhibit an ultrahigh discharge energy density of 18.3 J cm⁻³ and a discharge efficiency of 60.6% at 550 kV mm⁻¹. This energy density is much higher than that of the PVDF terpolymer and commercially biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP, 1–2 J cm⁻³). The simulation results prove that the enhanced energy density originates from the effectively depressed charge transport in crosslinked structure at high applied electric field. Moreover, this work provides a feasible method for developing flexible all-organic high-energy-density composites for polymer capacitors.

Perfluoroalkylated alternating copolymer possessing solubility in fluorous liquids and imaging capabilities under high energy radiation

A highly fluorinated alternating polymer, P(RFMi-St), possessing improved thermal properties and patterning capabilities over perfluoroalkyl polymethacrylates under high energy radiation was achieved with semi-perfluorododecyl maleimide (RFMi) and styrene (St). RFMi could be synthesised efficiently via a Mitsunobu reaction condition and copolymerised with St by free radical and reversible-deactivation radical polymerisation protocols. P(RFMi-St) showed a satisfactory glass-transition temperature (108 °C) and intermolecular cross-linking behaviour under electron-beam and commercially more important extreme UV (λ = 13.5 nm) irradiation. The exposed regions lost their solubility, resulting in the successful formation of mechanically non-deteriorated negative-tone images down to 50 nm. In addition, P(RFMi-St) could be solution-processed with chemically non-damaging fluorous liquids, which enabled the polymer to be applied effectively on top of an organic semiconductor layer as a dielectric material (dielectric constant 2.7) for the organic field-effect transistor fabrication.

Gamma Radiation-Induced Unsaturated P(VDF-CTFE) Membranes with Improved Mechanical Properties

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE)) membranes were prepared by drop-casting with tetrahydrofuran (THF), and were then radiated by a low dose of gamma radiation without any other reagents. The apparent colour of the freshly prepared film was a semi-transparent white, which gradually darkened and finally turned black after 10.2kGy gamma radiation. Meanwhile, the yield and breaking strength of the membrane both improved. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) spectra showed that the structure of the microcrystal of the irradiated P(VDF-CTFE)-THF membrane was not changed. FT-IR analysis showed that the structure of the newly formed double bonds was dominated by –CF2–CF=CH–CF2–, which was formed by both dehydrofluorination and dehydrochlorination. This structure was further confirmed by 1H NMR spectra. The intermediates, such a radical-containing double bonds (–(CF=CH)n–C•F–) formed in this process were traced by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The thermal and mechanical properties were studied by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), stress–strain and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and all the changes of microstructure and optimization of apparent properties were not found in the corresponding membrane prepared by a solution-cast method with ethyl acetate (EtOAc). Therefore, this paper briefly analyses the probable mechanism of using low dose of gamma radiation to improve the mechanical properties of the P(VDF-CTFE) film prepared with THF.

In-depth understanding of interfacial crystallization via Flash DSC and enhanced energy storage density in ferroelectric P(VDF-CTFE)/Au NRs nanocomposites for capacitor application

High-capacity or high-power-density capacitors are being actively investigated for portable electronics, electric vehicles, and electric power systems. We describe the filler system in dielectric nanocomposites with a small loading of Au nanorods [NRs] to elucidate the mechanism of interfacial crystallization behavior including the crystallization kinetics, and crystalline morphology and structure, and to investigate the intrinsic causes for concurrent great improvements in the dielectric constant and energy density in the nanocomposite system. Remarkly, at high crystallization temperature, the addition of Au NRs, which are used as heterogeneous nucleators, can reduce the nucleation barrier, resulting in accelerating the crystallization rate. However, the crystallization rate slows down at low temperatures because the addition of Au NRs limited the mobility of poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-CTFE)] chains, and thus enhanced the diffusion barrier. Furthermore, the addition of NRs has a huge impact on the crystalline morphology and structure which changes from large paraelectric α-phase spherulites with TGTG' conformations into minor ferroelectric γ-phase spherulites with T3GT3G' conformations, and also produces more exogenous interfaces between the lamellar crystals and amorphous regions, resulting in a higher dielectric constant and higher electric energy density in P(VDF-CTFE)/Au NRs nanocomposites. Our approach provides a facile and straightforward way to design or understand PVDF-based polymers for their practical applications in high-energy-density capacitors.

Significantly Enhanced Electromechanical Performance of PDMS Crosslinked PVDF Hybrids

Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based ferroelectric polymers have large and tunable dielectric permittivity (εr), but rather high Young's modulus (Y), which limits its electromechanical response when used as actuators. In this work, a silicone oligomer involving amino groups is employed to crosslink a non-crystallized poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) matrix bearing double bonds (P(VDF-CTFE-DB)) via addition reaction. Thanks to the flexible silicone molecules, the modulus of the hybrids is reduced over 30% when compared with the pristine matrix. Most interestingly, the εr of the hybrids is improved to nearly 100% higher than that of the matrix when the silicone content reaches 30 wt %. This may be due to the dilution effect of silicone molecules, which favors macromolecular chain rearrangement and dipole orientation of the hybrids under an applied electric field. As a result, electric-field activated displacements of the above hybrid increases to 0.73 mm from 0.48 mm of the matrix under 60 MV/m. The maximum electric field-induced thickness strain increases from 1% of the matrix to nearly 3% of the crosslinked hybrid. This work may provide a facile strategy to fabricate PVDF-based hybrids with enhanced electromechanical performance under low activating voltage.

Inserting –CHCH– into P(VDF-TrFE) by C–F activation mediated with Cu(0) in a controlled atom transfer radical elimination process

A controlled single electron transfer radical elimination (SET-RE) reaction has been successfully developed to introduce CHCH bonds into poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)).

High Dielectric and Mechanical Properties Achieved in Cross-Linked PVDF/α-SiC Nanocomposites with Elevated Compatibility and Induced Polarization at the Interface

Remarkably improved dielectric properties including high-k, low loss, and high breakdown strength combined with promising mechanical performance such as high flexibility, good heat, and chemical resistivity are hard to be achieved in high-k dielectric composites based on the current composite fabrication strategy. In this work, a family of high-k polymer nanocomposites has been fabricated from a facile suspension cast process followed by chemical cross-linking at elevated temperature. Internal double bonds bearing poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE-DB)) in total amorphous phase are employed as cross-linkable polymer matrix. α-SiC particles with a diameter of 500 nm are surface modified with 3-aminpropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) as fillers for their comparable dielectric performance with PVDF polymer matrix, low conductivity, and high breakdown strength. The interface between SiC particles and PVDF matrix has been finely tailored, which leads to the significantly elevated dielectric constant from 10 to over 120 in SiC particles due to the strong induced polarization. As a result, a remarkably improved dielectric constant (ca. 70) has been observed in c-PVDF/m-SiC composites bearing 36 vol % SiC, which could be perfectly predicted by the effective medium approximation (EMA) model. The optimized interface and enhanced compatibility between two components are also responsible for the depressed conductivity and dielectric loss in the resultant composites. Chemical cross-linking constructed in the composites results in promising mechanical flexibility, good heat and chemical stability, and elevated tensile performance of the composites. Therefore, excellent dielectric and mechanical properties are finely balanced in the PVDF/α-SiC composites. This work might provide a facile and effective strategy to fabricate high-k dielectric composites with promising comprehensive performance.

Recent Progress on Ferroelectric Polymer-Based Nanocomposites for High Energy Density Capacitors: Synthesis, Dielectric Properties, and Future Aspects

Dielectric polymer nanocomposites are rapidly emerging as novel materials for a number of advanced engineering applications. In this Review, we present a comprehensive review of the use of ferroelectric polymers, especially PVDF and PVDF-based copolymers/blends as potential components in dielectric nanocomposite materials for high energy density capacitor applications. Various parameters like dielectric constant, dielectric loss, breakdown strength, energy density, and flexibility of the polymer nanocomposites have been thoroughly investigated. Fillers with different shapes have been found to cause significant variation in the physical and electrical properties. Generally, one-dimensional and two-dimensional nanofillers with large aspect ratios provide enhanced flexibility versus zero-dimensional fillers. Surface modification of nanomaterials as well as polymers adds flavor to the dielectric properties of the resulting nanocomposites. Nowadays, three-phase nanocomposites with either combination of fillers or polymer matrix help in further improving the dielectric properties as compared to two-phase nanocomposites. Recent research has been focused on altering the dielectric properties of different materials while also maintaining their superior flexibility. Flexible polymer nanocomposites are the best candidates for application in various fields. However, certain challenges still present, which can be solved only by extensive research in this field.

Chemical bonding-induced low dielectric loss and low conductivity in high-K poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluorethylene)/graphene nanosheets nanocomposites

Blending high-permittivity (εr) ceramic powders or conductive fillers into polymers to form 0-3-type composites has been regarded as one of the most promising processes to achieve high-dielectric-permittivity materials with excellent processing performance. The high dielectric loss and conductivity induced by the interface between the matrix and fillers as well as the leakage current have long been a great challenge of dielectric composites, and the resolution of these challenges is still an open question. In this work, poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluorethylene with double bonds)/graphene nanosheets (P(VDF-TrFE-DB)/GNS) terpolymer nanocomposites were fabricated via a solution-cast process. GNSs were functionalized with KH550 to improve the dispersion in the terpolymer matrix solution and crosslinked with P(VDF-TrFE-DB) by a free-radical addition reaction in the nanocomposites. Compared with neat terpolymer, significantly increased dielectric permittivity and a low loss were observed for the composites. For instance, at 1 kHz the P(VDF-TrFE-DB)/GNS composites with 4 vol % GNS possessed a dielectric permittivity of 74, which is over seven times larger than that of neat terpolymer. However, a rather low dielectric loss (0.08 at 1 kHz) and conductivity (3.47 × 10(-7) S/m at 1 kHz) are observed in the P(VDF-TrFE-DB)/GNS composites containing up to 12 vol % GNS. The covalent bonding constructed between P(VDF-TrFE-DB) and GNS is responsible for the reduced aspect ratio of the GNS and the crystalline properties of P(VDF-TrFE-DB) as well as the improved compatibility between them. As a result, the high-dielectric-loss conductivity of polymer composites, mainly induced by conduction loss and the interface polarization between the matrix and filler, were effectively restricted. Meanwhile, the 3D network established between P(VDF-TrFE-DB) and GNS endows the P(VDF-TrFE-DB)/GNS composites at high temperature with excellent mechanical and dielectric properties. Besides preparing high-performance dielectric composites, this facile route may also be utilized to fabricate high-performance nanocomposites by inhibiting the poor compatibility between fillers and polymeric matrix.
