Electroactive poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/graphene composites for cardiac tissue engineering applications

Electroactive materials are increasingly being used in strategies to regenerate cardiac tissue. These materials, particularly those with electrical conductivity, are used to actively recreate the electromechanical nature of the cardiac tissue. In the present work, we describe a novel combination of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)), a highly electroactive polymer, with graphene (G), exhibiting high electrical conductivity. G/P(VDF-TrFE) films have been characterized in terms of topographical, physico-chemical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, and studied the response of cardiomyocytes adhering to them. The results indicate that the crystallinity and the wettability of the composites remain almost unaffected after G incorporation. In turn, surface roughness, Young modulus, and electric properties are higher in G/P(VDF-TrFE). Finally, the composites are highly biocompatible and able to support cardiomyocyte adhesion and proliferation, particularly surface treated ones, demonstrating the suitability of these materials for cardiac tissue engineering applications.

In vitro neuronal and glial response to magnetically stimulated piezoelectric poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)/cobalt ferrite (CFO) microspheres

Polymer biomaterials are being considered for tissue regeneration due to the possibility of resembling different extracellular matrix characteristics. However, most current scaffolds cannot respond to physical-chemical modifications of the cell microenvironment. Stimuli-responsive materials, such as electroactive smart polymers, are increasingly gaining attention once they can produce electrical potentials without external power supplies. The presence of piezoelectricity in human tissues like cartilage and bone highlights the importance of electrical stimulation in physiological conditions. Although poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is one of the piezoelectric polymers with the highest piezoelectric response, it is not biodegradable. Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a promising copolymer of poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) for tissue engineering and regeneration applications. It offers biodegradability, piezoelectric properties, biocompatibility, and bioactivity, making it a superior option to PVDF for biomedical purposes requiring biodegradability. Magnetoelectric polymer composites can be made by combining magnetostrictive particles and piezoelectric polymers to further tune their properties for tissue regeneration. These composites convert magnetic stimuli into electrical stimuli, generating local electrical potentials for various applications. Cobalt ferrites (CFO) and piezoelectric polymers have been combined and processed into different morphologies, maintaining biocompatibility for tissue engineering. The present work studied how PHBV/CFO microspheres affected neural and glial response in spinal cord cultures. It is expected that the electrical signals generated by these microspheres due to their magnetoelectric nature could aid in tissue regeneration and repair. PHBV/CFO microspheres were not cytotoxic and were able to impact neurite outgrowth and promote neuronal differentiation. Furthermore, PHBV/CFO microspheres led to microglia activation and induced the release of several bioactive molecules. Importantly, magnetically stimulated microspheres ameliorated cell viability after an in vitro ROS-induced lesion of spinal cord cultures, which suggests a beneficial effect on tissue regeneration and repair.

Materials and Strategies to Enhance Melt Electrowriting Potential

Melt electrowriting (MEW) is an emerging additive manufacturing (AM) technology that enables the precise deposition of continuous polymeric microfibers, allowing for the creation of high-resolution constructs. In recent years, MEW has undergone a revolution, with the introduction of active properties or additional functionalities through novel polymer processing strategies, the incorporation of functional fillers, postprocessing, or the combination with other techniques. While extensively explored in biomedical applications, MEW's potential in other fields remains untapped. Thus, this review explores MEW's characteristics from a materials science perspective, emphasizing the diverse range of materials and composites processed by this technique and their current and potential applications. Additionally, the prospects offered by postprinting processing techniques are explored, together with the synergy achieved by combining melt electrowriting with other manufacturing methods. By highlighting the untapped potentials of MEW, this review aims to inspire research groups across various fields to leverage this technology for innovative endeavors.

Ionic Thermoelectric Generators in Vertical and Planar Topologies Based on Fluorinated Polymer Hybrid Materials with Ionic Liquids

Ionic thermoelectrics (TEs), in which voltage generation is based on ion migration, are suitable for applications based on their low cost, high flexibility, high ionic conductivity, and wide range of Seebeck coefficients. This work reports on the development of ionic TE materials based on the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), Poly(VDF-co-TrFE), as host polymer blended with different contents of the ionic liquid, IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [EMIM][TFSI]. The morphology, physico-chemical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of the samples are evaluated together with the TE response. It is demonstrated that the IL acts as a nucleating agent for polymer crystallization. The mechanical properties and ionic conductivity values are dependent on the IL content. A high room temperature ionic conductivity of 0.008 S cm-1 is obtained for the sample with 60 wt% of [EMIM][TFSI] IL. The TE properties depend on both IL content and device topology-vertical or planar-the largest generated voltage range being obtained for the planar topology and the sample with 10 wt% of IL content, characterized by a Seebeck coefficient of 1.2 mV K-1 . Based on the obtained maximum power density of 4.9 µW m-2 , these materials are suitable for a new generation of TE devices.

State of the Art and Current Challenges on Electroactive Biomaterials and Strategies for Neural Tissue Regeneration

The loss or failure of an organ/tissue stands as one of the healthcare system's most prevalent, devastating, and costly challenges. Strategies for neural tissue repair and regeneration have received significant attention due to their particularly strong impact on patients' well-being. Many research efforts are dedicated not only to control the disease symptoms but also to find solutions to repair the damaged tissues. Neural tissue engineering (TE) plays a key role in addressing this problem and significant efforts are being carried out to develop strategies for neural repair treatment. In the last years, active materials allowing to tune cell-materials interaction are being increasingly used, representing a recent paradigm in TE applications. Among the most important stimuli influencing cell behavior are the electrical and mechanical ones. In this way, materials with the ability to provide this kind of stimuli to the neural cells seem to be appropriate to support neural TE. In this scope, this review summarizes the different biomaterials types used for neural TE, highlighting the relevance of using active biomaterials and electrical stimulation. Furthermore, this review provides not only a compilation of the most relevant studies and results but also strategies for novel and more biomimetic approaches for neural TE.

Biodegradable and biocompatible collagen-based hybrid materials for force sensing applications

With the aim of replacing synthetic macromolecules by biological macromolecules for advanced applications, collagen films were produced with two different ionic liquids (ILs), choline dihydrogen phosphate ([Ch][DHP]) and choline serinate ([Ch][Seri]), added in order to modulate the electrical responses. The films were prepared by casting, varying IL content between 0 and 6 wt%. The morphology and thermal properties of the resulting films were found to be independent of both IL type and content. However, the highest direct curret (d.c.) electrical conductivity (1.4 × 10-8 S·cm-1) was achieved for collagen films containing 3 wt% [Ch][DHP]. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that IL/collagen films were non-cytotoxic, with cell activity values exceeding 70 %. These collagen films were proven to be suitable for force sensing applications, displaying excellent sensitivity and stability upon repeated testing.

Melt Electrowriting of Nylon-12 Microfibers with an Open-Source 3D Printer

This study demonstrates how either a heated flat or cylindrical collector enables defect-free melt electrowriting (MEW) of complex geometries from high melting temperature polymers. The open-source "MEWron" printer uses nylon-12 filament and combined with a heated flat or cylindrical collector, produces well-defined fibers with diameters ranging from 33 ± 4 to 95 ± 3 µm. Processing parameters for stable jet formation and minimal defects based on COMSOL thermal modeling for hardware design are optimized. The balance of processing temperature and collector temperature is achieved to achieve auxetic patterns, while showing that annealing nylon-12 tubes significantly alters their mechanical properties. The samples exhibit varied pore sizes and wall thicknesses influenced by jet dynamics and fiber bridging. Tensile testing shows nylon-12 tubes are notably stronger than poly(ε-caprolactone) ones and while annealing has limited impact on tensile strength, yield, and elastic modulus, it dramatically reduces elongation. The equipment described and material used broadens MEW applications for high melting point polymers and highlights the importance of cooling dynamics for reproducible samples.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) Blends with Poly(caprolactone) and Poly(lactic acid): A Comparative Study

Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hidroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a biodegradable polymer, which is a potential substitute for plastics made from fossil resources. Due to its practical interest in the field of tissue engineering, packaging, sensors, and electronic devices, the demand for PHBV with specific thermal, electrical, as well as mechanical requirements is growing. In order to improve these properties, we have developed PHBV blends with two thermoplastic biodegradable polyesters, including poly(caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA). We analysed the effect of these biopolymers on the morphological, wetting, structural, thermal, mechanical, and electrical characteristics of the materials. Further, the biodegradation of the samples in simulated body fluid conditions was evaluated, as well as the antibacterial activity. The results demonstrate that the blending with PCL and PLA leads to films with a dense morphology, increases the hydrophilic character, and induces a reinforcement of the mechanical characteristics with respect to pristine PHBV. In addition, a decrease in dielectric constant and a.c. electrical conductivity was noticed for PHBV/PLA and PHBV/PCL blends compared to neat PHBV polymer. All neat polymers and blends showed antibacterial properties against S. aureus, with more than 40% bacterial reduction, which increased to 72% in the presence of PCL polymer for a blend ratio of 50/50. Thus, it is demonstrated a suitable way to further tailor a variety of functionalities of PHBV for specific applications, by the development of polymer blends with PLA or PCL.

Sustainable Collagen Composites with Graphene Oxide for Bending Resistive Sensing

This work reports on the development of collagen films with graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO NPs), aiming toward the development of a new generation of functional sustainable sensors. For this purpose, different GO NP contents up to 3 wt % were incorporated into a collagen matrix, and morphological, thermal, mechanical and electrical properties were evaluated. Independently of the GO NP content, all films display an increase in thermal stability as a result of the increase in the structural order of collagen, as revealed by XRD analysis. Further, the inclusion of GO NPs into collagen promotes an increase in the intensity of oxygen characteristic absorption bands in FTIR spectra, due to the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, which lead to an increase in the hydrophilic character of the surface. GO NPs also influence the mechanical properties of the composites, increasing the tensile strength from 33.2 ± 2.4 MPa (collagen) to 44.1 ± 1.0 MPa (collagen with 3 wt % GO NPs). Finally, the electrical conductivity also increases slightly with GO NP content, allowing the development of resistive bending sensors.

Analysis of the impact of handling and culture on the expansion and functionality of NK cells

Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes of the innate immune system that play a key role in the elimination of tumor and virus-infected cells. Unlike T cells, NK cell activation is governed by their direct interaction with target cells via the inhibitory and activating receptors present on their cytoplasmic membrane. The simplicity of this activation mechanism has allowed the development of immunotherapies based on the transduction of NK cells with CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) constructs for the treatment of cancer. Despite the advantages of CAR-NK therapy over CAR-T, including their inability to cause graft-versus-host disease in allogenic therapies, a deeper understanding of the impact of their handling is needed in order to increase their functionality and applicability. With that in mind, the present work critically examines the steps required for NK cell isolation, expansion and storage, and analyze the response of the NK cells to these manipulations. The results show that magnetic-assisted cell sorting, traditionally used for NK isolation, increases the CD16+ population of NK cultures only if the protocol includes both, antibody incubation and passage through the isolation column. Furthermore, based on the importance of surface potential on cellular responses, the influence of surfaces with different net surface charge on NK cells has been evaluated, showing that NK cells displayed higher proliferation rates on charged surfaces than on non-charged ones. The present work highlights the relevance of NK cells manipulation for improving the applicability and effectiveness of NK cell-based therapies.

High Performance Ternary Solid Polymer Electrolytes Based on High Dielectric Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Copolymers for Solid State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Renewable energy sources require efficient energy storage systems. Lithium-ion batteries stand out among those systems, but safety and cycling stability problems still need to be improved. This can be achieved by the implementation of solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) instead of the typically used separator/electrolyte system. Thus, ternary SPEs have been developed based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene), P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) as host polymers, clinoptilolite (CPT) zeolite added to stabilize the battery cycling performance, and ionic liquids (ILs) (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([BMIM][SCN])), 1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([PMPyr][TFSI]) or lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), incorporated to increase the ionic conductivity. The samples were processed by doctor blade with solvent evaporation at 160 °C. The nature of the polymer matrix and fillers affect the morphology and mechanical properties of the samples and play an important role in electrochemical parameters such as ionic conductivity value, electrochemical window stability, and lithium-transference number. The best ionic conductivity (4.2 × 10^-5 S cm^-1) and lithium transference number (0.59) were obtained for the PVDF-HFP-CPT-[PMPyr][TFSI] sample. Charge-discharge battery tests at C/10 showed excellent battery performance with values of 150 mAh g^-1 after 50 cycles, regardless of the polymer matrix and IL used. In the rate performance tests, the best SPE was the one based on the P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) host polymer, with a discharge value at C-rate of 98.7 mAh g^-1, as it promoted ionic dissociation. This study proves for the first time the suitability of P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) as SPE in lithium-ion batteries, showing the relevance of the proper selection of the polymer matrix, IL type, and lithium salt in the formulation of the ternary SPE, in order to optimize solid-state battery performance. In particular, the enhancement of the ionic conductivity provided by the IL and the effect of the high dielectric constant polymer P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) in improving battery cyclability in a wide range of discharge rates must be highlighted.

Magnetic Polymer Actuators with Self-Sensing Resistive Bending Response Based on Ternary Polymer Composites

A multifunctional polymer-based composite has been designed based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as polymer matrix and cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄, CFO) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as fillers, allowing to combine magnetic and electrical responses. The composites were prepared by solvent casting with a fixed 20 wt % concentration of CFO and varying the MWCNTs content between 0 and 3 wt %, allowing to tailor the electrical behavior. The morphology, polymer phase, and thermal and magnetic properties are nearly independent of the MWCNT filler content within the polymer matrix. On the other hand, the mechanical and electrical properties strongly depend on the MWCNT content and a maximum d.c. electrical conductivity value of 4 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1 has been obtained for the 20 wt %CFO-3 wt %MWCNT/PVDF sample, which is accompanied by an 11.1 emu·g^-1 magnetization. The suitability of this composite for magnetic actuators with self-sensing strain characteristics is demonstrated with excellent response and reproducibility.

Designing antimicrobial biomembranes via clustering amino-modified cellulose nanocrystals on silk fibroin β-sheets

The continuous rising of infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens is becoming a global healthcare concern. Developing new bio-based materials with unique chemical and structural features that allow efficient interaction with bacteria is thus important for fighting this phenomenon. To address this issue, we report an antimicrobial biomaterial that results from clustering local facial amphiphilicity from amino-modified cellulose on silk fibroin β-sheets, by simply blending the two components through casting technology. A simple but effective method for creating a membrane that is antibacterial and non-cytotoxic. Amino-modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-NH₂) were mixed with proteinaceous silk fibroin (SF) which resulted in a material with improved crystallinity, higher β-sheet content, and exposed amino-groups at its surface features, proven by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), that does not occur when the components are individually assembled. The resulting material possesses important antibacterial activity inducing >3 CFU log₁₀ reduction of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, while the pristine membranes show no antibacterial effect. The chemical interactions occurring between SF and CNC-NH₂ during casting, exposing the amino moieties at the surface of the material, are proposed as the main reason for this antimicrobial activity. Importantly, the membranes are non-cytotoxic, showing their potential to be used as a new bioinspired material with intrinsic antibacterial activity for biomedical applications. Those may include coatings for medical devices for the control of healthcare-associated infections, with no need for including external antimicrobial agents in the material.

High-Performance Sustainable Electrochromic Devices Based on Carrageenan Solid Polymer Electrolytes with Ionic Liquid

The development of sustainable functional materials with strong potential to be applied in different areas has been growing and gaining increasing interest to address the environmental impact of current materials and technologies. In this scope, this work reports on sustainable functional materials with electrochromic properties, based on their increasing interest for a variety of applications, including sensing technologies. The materials have been developed based on a natural derived polymer, carrageenan, in which different amounts of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([EMIM][SCN]) were blended. It is shown that the addition of different amounts of IL to the carrageenan matrix does not affect the properties of the samples in terms of morphology or physicochemical and thermal properties, the most significant difference being the increase of the ionic conductivity with increasing IL content, ranging from 2.3 × 10^-11 S·cm^-1 for pristine carrageenan to 4.6 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1 for the samples with 5 and 60 wt % IL content, respectively. A electrochromic device has been developed based on the different IL/carrageenan samples as electrolyte and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as electrodes. Spectroelectrochemistry testing demonstrates functional devices at low voltages between 0.3 and -0.9 V. Among the different samples, the one with 15 wt % IL content presents the best conditions for application, presenting an oxidation time of 6 s, a reduction time of 8 s, and a charge density of 1150 and 1050 μC·cm^-2 for oxidation and reduction, respectively. The same sample also presents excellent optical density as a function of load density, presenting an optical switch (Δ%Tx) of 99%. Thus, it is demonstrated that it is possible to develop high efficiency and sustainable electrochromic devices based on natural polymers and ionic liquids.

Influence of Solvent Evaporation Temperature on the Performance of Ternary Solid Polymer Electrolytes Based on Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) Combining an Ionic Liquid and a Zeolite

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) will allow improving safety and durability in next-generation solid-state lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Within the SPE class, ternary composites are a suitable approach as they provide high room-temperature ionic conductivity and excellent cycling and electrochemical stability. In this work, ternary SPEs based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) as a polymer host, clinoptilolite (CPT) zeolite, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([Bmim][SCN])) ionic liquid (IL) as fillers were produced by solvent evaporation at different temperatures (room temperature, 80, 120, and 160 °C). Solvent evaporation temperature affects the morphology, degree of crystallinity, and mechanical properties of the samples as well as the ionic conductivity and lithium transference number. The highest ionic conductivity (1.2 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1) and lithium transference number (0.66) have been obtained for the SPE prepared at room temperature and 160 °C, respectively. Charge-discharge battery tests show the highest value of discharge capacity of 149 and 136 mAh·g^-1 at C/10 and C/2 rates, respectively, for the SPE prepared at 160 °C. We conclude that the fine control of the solvent evaporation temperature during the preparation of the SPE allows us to optimize solid-state battery performance.

Framework of magnetostrain responsive Ni-Mn-Ga microparticles driving magnetic field induced out-of-plane actuation of laminate composite

Ni-Mn-Ga single crystals (SC) exhibiting a giant magnetic field induced strain (MFIS), resulting from twin boundaries rearrangements, are excellent materials for novel actuators although enhanced brittleness and high costs are remaining the issues for applications. In polycrystalline state Ni-Mn-Ga alloys show small MFIS due to grain boundary constraints. By simple size reduction of the mentioned materials it is hardly possible to create quasi-two-dimensional MFIS actuators on the microscale with a pertinent out-of-plane performance. In pursuit of the trend for next generation materials and functions by design, in the present work we have developed a laminate composite as a prototype of microactuator with the out-of-plane stroke being driven by a framework of magnetostrain responsive Ni-Mn-Ga microparticles. The laminate consisted of the layer of crystallographically oriented Ni-Mn-Ga semi-free SC microparticles sandwiched between bonding polymer and Cu foils. Such design provided a particles isolation with a minimum constraint condition from the polymer. MFIS of the individual particles and the whole laminate composite was investigated by X-ray micro-CT 3D imaging. Both particles and laminate exhibited the same recoverable out-of-plane stroke produced by the particles´ MFIS of around 3% under 0.9 T. The developed microactuator design is promising for applications in the areas of micro-robotics, optical image stabilization in cameras, pumps for microfluidics etc.

Sustainable Collagen Blends with Different Ionic Liquids for Resistive Touch Sensing Applications

Considering the sustainable development goals to reduce environmental impact, sustainable sensors based on natural polymers are a priority as the large im plementation of these materials is required considering the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. In this context, the present work reports on sustainable blends based on collagen and different ionic liquids (ILs), including ([Ch][DHP], [Ch][TSI], [Ch][Seri]) and ([Emim][TFSI]), processed with varying contents and types of ILs in order to tailor the electrical response. Varying IL types and contents leads to different interactions with the collagen polymer matrix and, therefore, to varying mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Collagen/[Ch][Seri] samples display the most pronounced decrease of the tensile strength (3.2 ± 0.4 MPa) and an increase of the elongation at break (50.6 ± 1.5%). The best ionic conductivity value of 0.023 mS cm^-1 has been obtained for the sample with 40 wt % of the IL [Ch][Seri]. The functional response of the collagen-IL films has been demonstrated on a resistive touch sensor whose response depends on the ionic conductivity, being suitable for the next generation of sustainable touch sensing devices.

Improving the Performance of Paper-Based Dipole Antennas by Electromagnetic Flux Concentration

One of the essential issues in modern advanced materials science is to design and manufacture flexible devices, in particular in the framework of the Internet of Things (IoT), to improve integration into applications. An antenna is an essential component of wireless communication modules and, in addition to flexibility, compact dimensions, printability, low cost, and environmentally friendlier production strategies, also represent relevant functional challenges. Concerning the antenna's performance, the optimization of the reflection coefficient and maximum range remain the key goals. In this context, this work reports on screen-printed paper@Ag-based antennas and optimizes their functional properties, with improvements in the reflection coefficient (S₁₁) from -8 to -56 dB and maximum transmission range from 208 to 256 m, with the introduction of a PVA-Fe₃O₄@Ag magnetoactive layer into the antenna's structure. The incorporated magnetic nanostructures allow the optimization of the functional features of antennas with possible applications ranging from broadband arrays to portable wireless devices. In parallel, the use of printing technologies and sustainable materials represents a step toward more sustainable electronics.

Magnetically responsive chitosan-pectin films incorporating Fe3O4 nanoparticles with enhanced antimicrobial activity

Chitosan-pectin films with iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by solution casting in order to produce biopolymer based magnetically active materials. Infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated physical interactions between the matrix and nanoparticles, corroborated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results. In addition, thermal characterization suggested that the interactions between chitosan, pectin and the nanoparticles resulted in a less compact structure, influencing the film mechanical properties. Regarding vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) and electrical analysis, chitosan-pectin films with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles showed ferrimagnetic behavior, with an increase of the dielectric constant as the nanoparticle concentration increased. Furthermore, films displayed enhanced antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (Gram-positive) bacteria. Therefore, chitosan-pectin films with Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles provide promising results for active and intelligent food packaging applications.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene-Based Composites with Permalloy with Tailored Magnetic Response

This work reports on tailoring the magnetic properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)-based composites for their application in magnetoactive systems, such as magnetic sensors and actuators. The magnetic properties of the composites are provided by the inclusion of varying permalloy (Py-Ni₇₅Fe₂₀Mo₅) nanoparticle content within the ABS matrix. Composites with Py nanoparticle content up to 80 wt% were prepared and their morphological, mechanical, thermal, dielectric and magnetic properties were evaluated. It was found that ABS shows the capability to include high loads of the filler without negatively influencing its thermal and mechanical properties. In fact, the thermal properties of the ABS matrix are basically unaltered with the inclusion of the Py nanoparticles, with the glass transition temperatures of pristine ABS and its composites remaining around 105 °C. The mechanical properties of the composites depend on filler content, with the Young's modulus ranging from 1.16 GPa for the pristine ABS up to 1.98 GPa for the sample with 60 wt% filler content. Regarding the magnetic properties, the saturation magnetization of the composites increased linearly with increasing Py content up to a value of 50.9 emu/g for the samples with 80 wt% of Py content. A numerical model has been developed to support the findings about the magnetic behavior of the NP within the ABS. Overall, the slight improvement in the mechanical properties and the magnetic properties provides the ABS composites new possibilities for applications in magnetoactive systems, including magnetic sensors, actuators and magnetic field shielding.

Enhanced neuronal differentiation by dynamic piezoelectric stimulation

Electroactive smart materials play an important role for tissue regenerative applications. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a specific subtype of piezoelectric electroactive material that generates electrical potential upon mechanical stimulation. This work focuses on the application of piezoelectric PVDF films for neural differentiation. Human neural precursor cells (hNPCs) are cultured on piezoelectric poled and non-poled β-PVDF films with or without a pre-coating step of poly-d-lysine and laminin (PDL/L). Subsequently, hNPCs differentiation into the neuronal lineage is assessed (MAP2⁺ and DCX⁺ ) under static or dynamic (piezoelectric stimulation) culture conditions. The results demonstrate that poled and coated β-PVDF films induce neuronal differentiation under static culture conditions which is further enhanced with mechanical stimulation. In silico calculations of the electrostatic potential of different domains of laminin, highlight the high polarity of those domains, which shows a clear preference to interact with the varying surface electric field of the piezoelectric material under mechanical stimulation. These interactions might explain the higher neuronal differentiation induced by poled β-PVDF films pre-coated with PDL/L under dynamic conditions. Our results suggest that electromechanical stimuli, such as the ones induced by piezoelectric β-PVDF films, are suitable to promote neuronal differentiation and hold great promise for the development of neuroregenerative therapies.

Surface charge and dynamic mechanoelectrical stimuli improves adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of neuron-like cells

Neuronal diseases and trauma are among the current major health-care problems. Patients frequently develop an irreversible state of neuronal disfunction that lacks treatment, strongly reducing life quality and expectancy. Novel strategies are thus necessary and tissue engineering research is struggling to provide alternatives to current treatments, making use of biomaterials capable to provide cell supports and active stimuli to develop permissive environments for neural regeneration. As neuronal cells are naturally found in electrical microenvironments, the electrically active materials can pave the way for new and effective neuroregenerative therapies. In this work the influence of piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) with different surface charges and dynamic mechanoelectrical stimuli on neuron-like cells adhesion, proliferation and differentiation was addressed. It is successfully demonstrated that both surface charge and electrically active dynamic microenvironments can be suitable to improve neuron-like cells adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. These findings provide new knowledge to develop effective approaches for preclinical applications.

Piezoelectric and Magnetically Responsive Biodegradable Composites with Tailored Porous Morphology for Biotechnological Applications

The biomedical area in the scope of tissue regeneration pursues the development of advanced materials that can target biomimetic approaches and, ideally, have an active role in the environment they are placed in. This active role can be related to or driven by morphological, mechanical, electrical, or magnetic stimuli, among others. This work reports on the development of active biomaterials based on poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid-co-3-hydroxyvaleric acid), PHBV, a piezoelectric and biodegradable polymer, for tissue regeneration application by tailoring its morphology and functional response. PHBV films with different porosities were obtained using the solvent casting method, resorting to high-boiling-point solvents, as N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), and the combination of chloroform (CF) and DMF for polymer dissolution. Furthermore, magnetoelectric biomaterials were obtained through the combination of the piezoelectric PHBV with magnetostrictive iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles. Independently of the morphology or filler content, all biomaterials proved to be suitable for biomedical applications.

Ionic Liquids as Biocompatible Antibacterial Agents: A Case Study on Structure-Related Bioactivity on Escherichia coli

The potential of ionic liquids (ILs) to be used as antimicrobial agents for biomedical applications has been hindered by the fact that most of them are cytotoxic toward mammalian cells. Understanding the mechanism of bacterial and mammalian cellular damage of ILs is key to their safety design. In this work, we evaluate the antimicrobial activity and mode of action of several ILs with varying anions and cations toward the clinically relevant Gram-negative Escherichia coli. Langmuir monolayer technique was used to evaluate if the IL's mode of action was related to the bacterial cell membrane interaction for an effective E. coli killing. 1-Decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide [DMIM][TFSI] and trihexyltetradecyl phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide [P_6,6,6,14][TFSI] were surface-active and induced bacterial cell lysis, through a membrane-disruption phenomenon on bacteria, in a mechanism that was clearly related to the long alkyl chains of the cation. 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate [EMIM][HSO₄] was highly antimicrobial toward E. coli and found suitable for biological applications since it was harmless to mammalian cells at most of the tested concentrations. The results suggest that the imidazolium cation of the ILs is mostly responsible not only for their antimicrobial activity but also for their cytotoxicity, and the inclusion of different anions may tailor the ILs' biocompatibility without losing the capacity to kill bacteria, as is the case of [EMIM][HSO₄]. Importantly, this IL was found to be highly antimicrobial even when incorporated in a polymeric matrix.

Reusable composite membranes for highly efficient chromium removal from real water matrixes

Natural or industrial hexavalent chromium water pollution continues to be a worldwide unresolved threat. Today, there is intense research on new active and cost-effective sorbents for Cr(VI), but most still exhibit a critical limitation: their powdered nature makes their recovery from water cost and energy consuming. In this work, Al(OH)₃, MIL-88-B(Fe), and UiO-66-NH₂ Cr(VI) sorbents were immobilized into a poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymeric substrate to develop an easily reactivable and reusable water filtering technology. The immobilization of the sorbents into the PVDF-HFP porous matrix modified the macro and meso-porous structure of the polymeric matrix, tuning in parallel its wettability. Although a partial blocking of the Cr(VI) adsorptive capacity was observed for of Al(OH)₃ and MIL-88-B(Fe) when immobilized into composite membranes, PVDF-HFP/UiO-66-NH₂ filter (i) exceeded the full capacity of the non-immobilized sorbent to trap Cr(VI), (ii) could be reactivated and reusable, and (iii) it was fully functional when applied in real water effluents.

Exploring ionic liquid-laden metal-organic framework composite materials as hybrid electrolytes in metal (ion) batteries

This review focuses on the combination of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and ionic liquids (ILs) to obtain composite materials to be used as solid electrolytes in metal-ion battery applications. Benefiting from the controllable chemical composition, tunable pore structure and surface functionality, MOFs offer great opportunities for synthesizing high-performance electrolytes. Moreover, the encapsulation of ILs into porous materials can provide environmentally benign solid-state electrolytes for electrochemical devices. Due to the versatility of MOF-based materials, in this review we also explore their use as anodes and cathodes in Li- and Na-ion batteries. Finally, solid IL@MOF electrolytes and their implementation into Li and Na batteries have been analyzed, as well as the design and advanced manufacturing of solid IL@MOF electrolytes embedded on polymeric matrices.

Fiber-Reinforced Polyester Composites with Photoluminescence Sensing Capabilities for UV Degradation Monitoring

The wide application of fiber-reinforced polymer composite (FRPC) materials has given rise to the problem of their durability and performance over time. These problems are largely associated with their environmental conditions and service procedures, including ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Here, we propose the production of polyester-based composites with different contents of synthesized Y₃Al₅O₁₂:Ce³⁺,Ga (YAG:Ce,Ga) particles to provide sensing abilities towards material degradation. In this regard, the composites were subjected to UV radiation exposure, and its influence on the morphological, mechanical, and optical properties of the materials was investigated. Our findings reveal the self-sensing capabilities of the developed FRPC. The results indicate the potential of the system for the development of highly effective coatings allowing to detect and monitor UV degradation in composite materials for demanding applications.

Ionic liquid-based electroactive materials: a novel approach for cardiac tissue engineering strategies

Cardiac tissue regeneration strategies are increasingly taking advantage of electroactive scaffolds to actively recreate the tissue microenvironment. In this context, this work reports on advanced materials based on two different ionic liquids (ILs), 2-hydroxyethyl-trimethylammonium dihydrogen phosphate ([Ch][DHP]) and choline bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Ch][TFSI]), combined with poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) for the development of ionic electroactive IL/polymer hybrid materials for cardiac tissue engineering (TE). The morphological, physico-chemical, thermal and electrical properties of the hybrid materials, as well as their potential use as scaffolds for cardiac TE applications, were evaluated. Besides inducing changes in surface topography, roughness and wettability of the composites, the incorporation of [Ch][DHP] and [Ch][TFSI] leads to the increase in surface (σ_surface) and volume (σ_volume) electrical conductivities. Furthermore, washing the hybrid samples with phosphate-buffered saline solution strongly decreases the σ_surface, whereas σ_surface and σ_volume of the composites remain almost unaltered after exposure to ultraviolet sterilization treatment. Additionally, it is verified that the incorporation of IL influences the P(VDF-TrFE) microstructure and crystallization process, acting as a defect during its crystallization. Cytotoxicity assays revealed that hybrid films based on [Ch][DHP] alone are not cytotoxic. These films also support H9c2 myoblast cell adhesion and proliferation, demonstrating their suitability for cardiac TE strategies based on electroactive microenvironments.

Lithium-Ion Battery Solid Electrolytes Based on Poly(vinylidene Fluoride)-Metal Thiocyanate Ionic Liquid Blends

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are required to improve battery safety through the elimination of the liquid electrolyte solution in current batteries. This work is focused on the development of a hybrid SPE based on poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cobalt(II) isothiocyanate, [BMIM]₂[(SCN)₄Co] magnetic ionic liquid (MIL), and its battery cycling behavior at room temperature. The addition of MIL in filler contents up to 40 wt % to the PVDF matrix does not influence the compact morphology of the samples obtained by solvent casting. The polar β-phase of PVDF increases with increasing MIL content, whereas the degree of crystallinity, thermal degradation temperature, and mechanical properties of the MIL/PVDF blends decrease with increasing MIL content. The ionic conductivity of the MIL/PVDF blends increases both with temperature and MIL content, showing the highest ionic conductivity of 7 × 10^-4 mS cm^-1 at room temperature for the MIL/PVDF blend with 40 wt % of MIL. The cathodic half-cells prepared with this blend as SPE show good reversibility and excellent cycling behavior at different C-rates, with a discharge capacity of 80 mAh g^-1 at a C/10-rate with a Coulombic efficiency of 99%. The developed magnetic SPE, with excellent performance at room temperature, shows potential for the implementation of sustainable lithium-ion batteries, which can be further tuned by the application of an external magnetic field.

Microfluidic Processing of Piezoelectric and Magnetic Responsive Electroactive Microspheres

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) combined with cobalt ferrite (CFO) particles is one of the most common and effective polymeric magnetoelectric composites. Processing PVDF into its electroactive phase is a mandatory condition for featuring electroactive behavior and specific (post)processing may be needed to achieve this state, although electroactive phase crystallization is favored at processing temperatures below 60 °C. Different techniques are used to process PVDF-CFO nanocomposite structures into microspheres with high CFO dispersion, with microfluidics adding the advantages of high reproducibility, size tunability, and time and resource efficiency. In this work, magnetoelectric microspheres are produced in a one-step approach. We describe the production of high content electroactive phase PVDF and PVDF-CFO microspheres using microfluidic technology. A flow-focusing polydimethylsiloxane device is fabricated based on a 3D printed polylactic acid master, which enables the production of spherical microspheres with mean diameters ranging from 80 to 330 μm. The microspheres feature internal and external cavernous structures and good CFO distribution with an encapsulation efficacy of 80% and prove to be in the electroactive γ-phase with a mean content of 75%. The microspheres produced using this approach show suitable characteristics as active materials for tissue regeneration strategies and other piezoelectric polymer applications.

Electro and magnetoactive printed bi-functional actuators based on alginate hybrid hydrogels

Soft materials are attracting much attention for the development of biostructures able to mimic the movement of natural systems by remote actuation. Multi-sensitive hydrogels are among the best materials for obtaining dynamic and biocompatible soft structures for soft actuators and related biomedical devices. Nevertheless, bioinks based on naturally occurring and stimuli responsive hydrogels able to be 3D printed continues being a challenge for advanced applications. In this work 3D printable electrically and magnetically responsive, non-cytotoxic, hybrid hydrogels based on alginate and zero monovalent iron nanoparticles (NPs) are presented. The effect of NPs addition on the physico-chemical properties of the hydrogels is addressed, together with its effect on the functional electroactive and magnetoactive response. NPs concentration up to 10 % do not affect the mechanical stability of the gels, while promoting an increase actuation response.

Understanding Myoblast Differentiation Pathways When Cultured on Electroactive Scaffolds through Proteomic Analysis

Electroactive materials allow the modulation of cell-materials interactions and cell fate, leading to advanced tissue regeneration strategies. Nevertheless, their effect at the cellular level is still poorly understood. In this context, the proteome analysis of C2C12 cell differentiation cultured on piezoelectric polymer films with null average surface charge (non-poled), net positive surface charge (poled +), and net negative surface charge (poled -) has been addressed. Protein/pathway alterations for skeletal muscle development were identified comparing proteomic profiles of C2C12 cells differentiated on poly(vinylidene fluoride), with similar cells differentiated on a polystyrene plate (control), using label-free liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Only significantly expressed proteins (P < 0.01, analysis of variance) were used for bioinformatic analyses. A total of 37 significantly expressed proteins were detected on the C2C12 proteome with PVDF "poled -" at 24 h, whereas on the PVDF "poled +", a total of 105 significantly expressed proteins were considered. At 5 days of differentiation, the number of significantly expressed proteins decreased to 23 and 31 in cells grown on negative and positive surface charge, respectively, the influence of surface charge being more explicit in some proteins. In both cases, proteins such as Fbn1, Hspg2, Rcn3, Tgm2, Mylpf, Anxa2, and Anxa6, involved in calcium-related signaling, were highly expressed during myoblast differentiation. Furthermore, some proteins involved in muscle contraction (Acta2, Anxa2, and Anxa6) were detected in the PVDF "poled +" sample. Upregulation of several proteins that enhance skeletal muscle development was detected in the PVDF "poled -" sample, including Ckm (422%), Tmem14c (384%), Serpinb6a (460%), adh7 (199%), and Car3 (171%), while for the "poled +" samples, these proteins were also upregulated at a smaller magnitude (254, 317, 253, 123, and 72%, respectively). Other differentially expressed proteins such as Mylpf (189%), Mybph (168%), and Mbnl1 (168%) were upregulated only in PVDF "poled -" samples, while Hba-a1 levels (581%) were increased in the PVDF "poled +" sample. On the other hand, cells cultured on non-poled samples have no differences with respect to the ones cultured on the control, in contrary to the poled films, with overall surface charge, demonstrating the relevance of scaffold surface charge on cell behavior. This study demonstrates that both positive and negative overall surface charges promote the differentiation of C2C12 cells through involvement of proteins related with the contraction of the skeletal muscle cells, with a more pronounced effect with the negative charged surfaces.

Electroactive functional microenvironments from bioactive polymers: A new strategy to address cancer

The present work reports on a new approach based on electroactive microenvironments to mitigate skeletal muscle cancer. For that, piezoelectric films based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) have been applied to evaluate the influence of mechano- and/or electrical stimuli on rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) proliferation. Human embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells were cultured on PVDF pristine films with different surface charge (non-poled, poled+ and poled-) and magnetic composites (10% and 20% Fe₃O₄, and 20% CFO filler content) to allow magneto-mechanical and magnetoelectrical stimulation films. Electrospun PVDF pristine (oriented and randomly) and magnetic (10% Fe₃O₄) fiber mats were also evaluated to take into consideration the morphology effect on cell response. It was found that the mechanical stimuli enhance RMS proliferation whereas the mechano-electrical decreases it. It was also verified that the RD cells proliferate better on randomly oriented fibers, whereas myoblast cells do it better in oriented ones. The obtained results confirm that electroactive microenvironments can be used to develop novel and effective approaches to deal with RMS cancer, that can be extrapolated to others cancer types.

Solid Polymer Electrolytes Based on Gellan Gum and Ionic Liquid for Sustainable Electrochromic Devices

Materials sustainability is becoming increasingly relevant in every developed technology and, consequently, environmentally friendly solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) based on gellan gum and different quantities of ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium-thiocyanate [Emim][SCN] have been prepared and applied in electrochromic devices (ECDs). The addition of the IL does not affect the crystalline phase of gellan gum, and the samples show a compact morphology, surface uniformity, no phase separation, and good distribution of the IL within the carrageenan matrix. The developed SPE are thermally stable up to ∼100 °C and show suitable mechanical properties. The most concentrated sample (39 wt % IL content) reaches a maximum ionic conductivity value of 6.0 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 and 1.8 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 at 30 and 90 °C, respectively. The electrochromic device (ECD) was fabricated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as working electrode and the developed SPE was compared with an aqueous 0.1 M KNO₃ solution. The electrochromic performance of the electrolyte was assessed in terms of spectroelectrochemistry, demonstrating a fully flexible ECD operating at voltages below 1.0 V. This novel electrolyte opens the door to the preparation of high performance sustainable ECD.

Greener Solvent-Based Processing of Magnetoelectric Nanocomposites

Polymer-based magnetoelectric (ME) nanocomposites are an enabling material technology for a wide range of applications in the area of digitalization strategies. Due to its highest piezoelectric response among polymers, poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) is the piezoelectric matrix most used in polymer-based ME materials with over 80% of the total reports, with the resulting composites typically processed from solutions with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), a toxic solvent. Nevertheless, environmentally friendlier approaches and sustainable technologies are increasingly being required. This work demonstrates that P(VDF-TrFE)/Co₂Fe₂O₄ nanocomposites can be successfully prepared from solution using three different environmentally friendlier solvents: dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N,N'-dimethylpropyleneurea (DMPU), and triethyl phosphate (TEP) with different dipole moments. It is shown that the prepared composite films, with a maximum ME voltage coefficient of 35 mV cm^-1 Oe^-1 and a maximum sensitivity of 2.2 mV T^-1, are suitable for applications, highlighting the path for a new generation of more sustainable ME sensors.

Multifunctional hybrid membranes for photocatalytic and adsorptive removal of water contaminants of emerging concern

This work focuses on the combination of multifunctional photocatalytic and adsorbent materials in a unique polymeric membrane. For this purpose, Au/TiO₂ and Y₂(CO₃)₃ nanoparticles were immobilised onto a poly (vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene), (PVDF-HFP) membrane, and the physical-chemical characterisation of these materials was performed, as well as pollutant removal efficiency. An efficient TiO₂ functionalisation with gold nanoparticles was achieved, endowing these particles with the capability to absorb visible radiation absorption. A favourable porous structure was obtained for the membranes, with an average pore size of 4 μm, and the nanoparticles immobilisation did not alter the chemical properties of the polymeric membrane. The produced hybrid materials, including both the Au/TiO₂ and Y₂(CO₃)₃ nanoparticles, presented an efficiency of 57% in the degradation of norfloxacin (5 mg/L) under ultraviolet radiation for 120 min, 80% under visible radiation for 300 min, and 58% in arsenic adsorption for 240 min. These membranes represent a new multifunctional platform for removing several pollutants, which may allow their incorporation in more efficient and less energy-consuming water treatment processes favouring its application, even in low energy resources countries.

Flexible TiCux Thin Films with Dual Antimicrobial and Piezoresistive Characteristics

The eradication of microorganisms from high traffic surfaces to prevent either viral or bacterial infections represents an urgent need, mainly in the scope of the present pandemic scenario. In this context, this work explores the dual functionality of titanium-copper thin films as pressure elements with antimicrobial properties, aiming for the implementation of touch and sensing capabilities in high traffic surfaces. Copper was employed as the antibacterial agent within a titanium matrix. The film's geometry and deposition parameters were varied in order to optimize antimicrobial and piezoresistive response. A considerable antimicrobial response has been obtained, increasing the copper amount (from 23 to 63 at. %) in the titanium matrix, leading to an outstanding 8 log₁₀ CFU bacterial reduction in the case of Escherichia coli. Moreover, for the same amount of copper, the piezoresistive sensibility of the thin films increases up to a maximum gauge factor of 5.18 ± 0.09, which indicates an adequate electromechanical behavior for sensing applications. Our findings demonstrate the best combined antimicrobial and piezoresistive characteristics for the films with a Cu content of 63 at. %, indicating a potential use of these films for electromechanical sensor applications.

Exploring electroactive microenvironments in polymer-based nanocomposites to sensitize bacterial cells to low-dose embedded silver nanoparticles

The search for alternative antimicrobial strategies capable of avoiding resistance mechanisms in bacteria are highly needed due to the alarming emergence of antimicrobial resistance. The application of physical stimuli as a mean of sensitizing bacteria for the action of antimicrobials on otherwise resistant bacteria or by allowing the action of low quantity of antimicrobials may be seen as a breakthrough for such purpose. This work proposes the development of antibacterial nanocomposites using the synergy between the electrically active microenvironments, created by a piezoelectric polymer (poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE)), with green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The electrical microenvironment is generated via mechanical stimulation of piezoelectric PVDF-TrFE/AgNPs films using a lab-made mechanical bioreactor. The generated material's electrical response further translates to bacterial cells, namely Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis which in combination with AgNPs and the specific morphological features of the material induce important antibacterial and antibiofilm activity. Both porous and non-porous PVDF composites have shown antibacterial characteristics when stimulated at a mechanical frequency of 4 Hz being the effect boosted when AgNPs were incorporated in the nanocomposite, reducing in more than 80% the S. epidermidis bacterial growth in planktonic and biofilm form. The electroactive environments sensitize the bacteria allowing the action of a low dose of AgNPs (1.69% (w/w)). Importantly, the material did not compromise the viability of mammalian cells, thus being considered biocompatible. The piezoelectric stimulation of PVDF-based polymeric films may represent a breakthrough in the development of antibacterial coatings for devices used at hospital setting, taking advantage on the use of mechanical stimuli (pressure/touch) to exert antibacterial and antibiofilm activity. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The application of physical methods in alternative to the common chemical ones is seen as a breakthrough for avoiding the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial strategies that take advantage on the capability of bacteria to sense physical stimuli such as mechanical and electrical cues are scarce. Electroactive nanocomposites comprised of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) and green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were developed to obtain material able to inhibit the colonization of microorganisms. By applying a mechanical stimuli to the nanocomposite, which ultimately mimics movements such as walking or touching, an antimicrobial effect is obtained, resulting from the synergy between the electroactive microenvironments created on the surface of the material and the AgNPs. Such environments sensitize the bacteria to low doses of antimicrobials.

Influence of glucose, sucrose, and dextran coatings on the stability and toxicity of silver nanoparticles

Aqueous colloids, consisting of 15-30 nm-sized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), were prepared using the reducing and stabilizing abilities of glucose, sucrose, and dextran. The long-term stability of coated Ag NPs increases from glucose over sucrose to dextran, i.e., with the increase of the molecular weight of carbohydrate molecules. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the partial atomic (Mulliken) charges and adsorption energies are applied to explain the enhanced stability of coated Ag NPs. All coated Ag NPs have a significantly broader concentration range of nontoxic behavior toward pre-osteoblast cells than bare Ag NPs prepared using sodium borohydride. The carbohydrate-coated Ag NPs display the same level of toxic ability against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria as bare Ag NPs. The differences in toxicity mechanism of the coated and bare Ag NPs are a consequence of the absence and presence of co-occurring Ag+ ions in examined dispersion, respectively.

Effect of Polymer Dissolution Temperature and Conditioning Time on the Morphological and Physicochemical Characteristics of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Membranes Prepared by Non-Solvent Induced Phase Separation

This work reports on the production of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent and water as non-solvent. The influence of the processing conditions in the morphology, surface characteristics, structure, thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated for polymer dissolution temperatures between 25 and 150 °C and conditioning time between 0 and 10 min. Finger-like pore morphology was obtained for all membranes and increasing the polymer dissolution temperature led to an increase in the average pore size (≈0.9 and 2.1 µm), porosity (≈50 to 90%) and water contact angle (up to 80°), in turn decreasing the β PVDF content (≈67 to 20%) with the degree of crystallinity remaining approximately constant (≈56%). The conditioning time did not significantly affect the polymer properties studied. Thus, the control of NIPS parameters proved to be suitable for tailoring PVDF membrane properties.

Reusable Ag@TiO2-Based Photocatalytic Nanocomposite Membranes for Solar Degradation of Contaminants of Emerging Concern

Two significant limitations of using TiO2 nanoparticles for water treatment applications are reduced photocatalytic activity under visible radiation and difficulty recovering the particles after use. In this study, round-shaped Ag@TiO2 nanocomposites with a ≈21 nm diameter and a bandgap energy of 2.8 eV were synthesised by a deposition-precipitation method. These nanocomposites were immobilised into a porous poly (vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) matrix and well-distributed within the pores. The photocatalytic activity of Ag@TiO2/PVDF-HFP against metronidazole (MNZ) under solar radiation was evaluated. Further, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was applied to predict the effect of four independent variables, including initial pollutant concentration, pH, light irradiation intensity, and reaction time, on the photocatalytic performance of the composite membrane on MNZ degradation. The 10% Ag@TiO2/PVDF-HFP composite membrane showed a maximum removal efficiency of 100% after 5 h under solar radiation. After three use cycles, this efficiency remained practically constant, demonstrating the membranes' reusability and suitability for water remediation applications.

High-Performance Room Temperature Lithium-Ion Battery Solid Polymer Electrolytes Based on Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) Combining Ionic Liquid and Zeolite

The demand for more efficient energy storage devices has led to the exponential growth of lithium-ion batteries. To overcome the limitations of these systems in terms of safety and to reduce environmental impact, solid-state technology emerges as a suitable approach. This work reports on a three-component solid polymer electrolyte system based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([BMIM][SCN]), and clinoptilolite zeolite (CPT). The influences of the preparation method and of the dopants on the electrolyte stability, ionic conductivity, and battery performance were studied. The developed electrolytes show an improved room temperature ionic conductivity (1.9 × 10^-4 S cm^-1), thermal stability (up to 300 °C), and mechanical stability. The corresponding batteries exhibit an outstanding room temperature performance of 160.3 mAh g^-1 at a C/15-rate, with a capacity retention of 76% after 50 cycles. These results represent a step forward in a promising technology aiming the widespread implementation of solid-state batteries.

Magnetic materials: a journey from finding north to an exciting printed future

The potential implications/applications of printing technologies are being recognized worldwide across different disciplines and industries. Printed magnetoactive smart materials, whose physical properties can be changed by the application of external magnetic fields, are an exclusive class of smart materials that are highly valuable due to their magnetically activated smart and/or multifunctional response. Such smart behavior allows, among others, high speed and low-cost wireless activation, fast response, and high controllability with no relevant limitations in design, shape, or dimensions. Nevertheless, the printing of magnetoactive materials is still in its infancy, and the design apparatus, the material set, and the fabrication procedures are far from their optimum features. Thus, this review presents the main concepts that allow interconnecting printing technologies with magnetoactive materials by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of this joint field, trying to highlight the scientific obstacles that still limit a wider application of these materials nowadays. Additionally, it discusses how these limitations could be overcome, together with an outlook of the remaining challenges in the emerging digitalization, Internet of Things, and Industry 4.0 paradigms. Finally, as magnetoactive materials will play a leading role in energy generation and management, the magnetic-based Green Deal is also addressed.
