Abstract
Mechanochromic (MC) luminogens in response to external stimulus have shown promising applications as pressure sensors and memory devices. Meanwhile, research on their underlying mechanism is still in the initial stage. Here, three pyridinium-functionalized tetraphenylethylenes bearing n-pentyloxy, hydrogen and nitro groups, namely TPE-OP, TPE-H and TPE-NO, are designed to systematically investigate the influence of the push-pull electronic effect and molecular conformation on MC luminescence. Upon anisotropic grinding and isotropic hydrostatic compression, TPE-OP with strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) affords the best MC behavior among them. Analysis of three polymorphs of TPE-H clearly indicates that planarization of the molecular conformation plays an important role in their bathochromic shifts under mechanical stimuli. Theoretical calculations also verify that high twisting stress of AIEgens can be released under high pressure. This study presents a mechanistic insight into MC behaviour and an effective strategy to achieve high-contrast MC luminescence.

Abstract
Low-lying singlet excited states of pyrene derivatives originated from the 1La and 1Lb states of pyrene have decisive influences on their absorption and fluorescence emission behaviors. Calculation of these excited states with quantitative accuracy is required for the theoretical design of pyrene derivatives tailored to target applications; this has been a long-standing challenge for ab initio quantum chemical calculations. In this study, we explore an adequate computational scheme through calculations of pyrene and its phenyl-substituted derivatives using multi-reference perturbation theory (MRPT) methods. All valence π orbitals on the pyrene moiety were assigned to the active orbitals. Computational load was reduced by restricting the electron excitations within the active orbitals in the preparation of reference configuration space. A generalized multi-configuration quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (GMCQDPT) was adopted to treat the reference space other than the complete active space. The calculated 1La and 1Lb excitation energies of pyrene are in good agreement with the experimental values. Calculations of 1,3,6,8-tetraphenyl pyrene suggest that the energetic ordering of 1La and 1Lb is inverted through tetraphenyl substitution and its lowest singlet excited state is the 1La parentage of pyrene, which is consistent with the experimentally deduced scheme. These results are not readily obtained by MRPT calculations with a limited number of active orbitals and single-reference theory calculations. Diphenyl pyrenes (DPPy) were also calculated at the same level of theory to investigate the dependence on the substitution positions of phenyl groups.

Abstract
The relationship between the photophysical properties and molecular orientation of 1,3,6,8-tetraalkylpyrenes in the solid state is described herein. The introduction of alkyl groups with different chain structures (in terms of length and branching) did not affect the photophysical properties in solution, but significantly shifted the emission wavelengths and fluorescence quantum yields in the solid state for some samples. Pyrenes bearing ethyl, isobutyl, or neopentyl groups at the 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-positions showed similar emission profiles in both the solution and solid states. In contrast, pyrenes bearing other alkyl groups exhibited an excimer emission in the solid state, similar to that of the parent pyrene. On studying the photophysical properties in the solid state with respect to the obtained crystal structures, the observed solid-state photophysical properties were found to depend on the relative position of the pyrene chromophores. The solid-state photophysical properties can be controlled by the alkyl groups, which provide changing crystal packing. Among the pyrenes tested, 1,3,6,8-tetraethylpyrene showed the highest fluorescence quantum yield of 0.88 in the solid state.

Abstract
We discovered four new solvates for naturally sourced allocryptopine. The new found crystalline forms are isostructural and have similar crystal structures and packing patterns. However, they exhibit obviously different fluorescence appearance. In addition, the acetone solvate SA, N,N-dimethylformamide solvate SD, and tetrahydrofuran solvate ST also present both luminescent mechanochromic and hydrochromic properties.

Abstract
Five novel derivatives of pyrene, substituted at positions 1,3,6,8 with 4-(2,2-dimethylpropyloxy)pyridine (P1), 4-decyloxypyridine (P2), 4-pentylpyridine (P3), 1-decyl-1,2,3-triazole (P4), and 1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazole (P5), are obtained through a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction or CuI -catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction, respectively, and characterized thoroughly. TGA measurements reveal the high thermal stability of the compounds. Pyrene derivatives P1-P5 all show photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (Φ) of approximately 75 % in solution. Solid-state photo- and electroluminescence characteristics of selected compounds as organic light-emitting diodes are tested. In the guest-host configuration, two matrixes, that is, poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and a binary matrix consisting of PVK and 2-tert-butylphenyl-5-biphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) (50:50 wt %), are applied. The diodes show red, green, or blue electroluminescence, depending on both the compound chemical structure and the actual device architecture. In addition, theoretical studies (DFT and TD-DFT) provide a deeper understanding of the experimental results.

Abstract
The possibility to change the molecular assembled structures of organic and organometallic materials through mechanical stimulation is emerging as a general and powerful concept for the design of functional materials. In particular, the photophysical properties such as photoluminescence color, quantum yield, and emission lifetime of organic and organometallic fluorophores can significantly depend on the molecular packing, enabling the development of molecular materials with mechanoresponsive luminescence characteristics. Indeed, an increasing number of studies have shown in recent years that mechanical force can be utilized to change the molecular arrangement, and thereby the optical response, of luminescent molecular assemblies of π-conjugated organic or organometallic molecules. Here, the development of such mechanoresponsive luminescent (MRL) molecular assemblies consisting of organic or organometallic molecules is reviewed and emerging trends in this research field are summarized. After a brief introduction of mechanoresponsive luminescence observed in molecular assemblies, the concept of "luminescent molecular domino" is introduced, before molecular materials that show turn-on/off of photoluminescence in response to mechanical stimulation are reviewed. Mechanically stimulated multicolor changes and water-soluble MRL materials are also highlighted and approaches that combine the concept of MRL molecular assemblies with other materials types are presented in the last part of this progress report.

Abstract
To create a new series of mechanofluorochromic materials and to elucidate the mechanism of the phenomenon of mechanofluorochromism, 1-alkanoylaminopyrenes including 1-acetylaminopyrene (AAPy), 1-octanoylaminopyrene (OAPy), and 1-stearoylaminopyren (SAPy) were prepared. It was found that these materials exhibited mechanofluorochromism with emission colors in the crystalline samples changing reversibly from bluish purple to yellowish green, which could be induced by mechanical grinding. X-ray crystal structure analysis, electronic absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopies, as well as fluorescence lifetime analysis and powder X-ray diffraction analysis of AAPy suggested that the present mechanofluorochromism was caused by developing crystal defects through grinding. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds were suggested to play an important role in the occurrence of mechanofluorochromism, suppressing the face-to-face overlapping of pyrene moieties to form excimers in the pristine crystal.

Abstract
We have systematically synthesized 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-alkyl-substituted pyrene derivatives using the latest synthesis methods and investigated the effects of alkyl substitution on the photophysical properties of the pyrene chromophore. Like the trimethylsilyl group, which is known to enhance the fluorescence properties of some chromophores through σ*-π* conjugation, alkyl groups (primary, secondary, and tertiary) enhanced the fluorescence quantum yield of the pyrene chromophore through σ-π conjugation in most cases. While these enhancements in the fluorescence quantum yield were beyond expectations, the results were supported by absolute measurements. These results also indicate that ubiquitous alkyl groups can be used to tune the photophysical properties of the pyrene chromophore, as well as to improve the solubility or prevent aggregation. In other words, they can be used to develop new photofunctional materials.
