Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gathered significant interest due to their tunable porosity leading to diverse potential applications. In this study, we investigate the incorporation of the fluorosolvatochromic dye 2-butyl-5,6-dimethoxyisoindoline-1,3-dione ([double bond, length as m-dash]Phth) into various MOF structures as a means to assess the polarity of these porous materials. As a purely inorganic compound, zeolite Y was tested for comparison. The fluorosolvatochromic behavior of Phth, which manifests as changes in its emission spectra in response to solvent polarity, provides a sensitive probe for characterizing the local environment within the MOF pores. Through systematic variation of the MOF frameworks, we demonstrate the feasibility of using (fluoro-)solvatochromic dyes as probes for assessing the polarity gradients within MOF structures. Additionally, the fluorosolvatochromic response was studied as a function of loading amount. Our findings not only offer insights into the interplay between MOF architecture and guest molecule interactions but also present a promising approach for the rational design and classification of porous materials based on their polarity properties.

Abstract
Amorphous metal-organic frameworks are rarely formed via direct synthesis. Our limited understanding of their atomic assembly in solution prevents full exploitation of their unique structural complexity. Here, we use in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy with sub-second time resolution to probe the formation of the amorphous Fe-BTC framework. Using a combination of spectral fingerprinting, linear combination analysis, and principal component analysis coupled with kinetic analyses, we reveal a multi-stage formation mechanism that, crucially, proceeds via the generation of a transient intermediate species.

Abstract
Materials with photoswitchable electronic properties and conductance values that can be reversibly changed over many orders of magnitude are highly desirable. Metal-organic framework (MOF) films functionalized with photoresponsive spiropyran molecules demonstrated the general possibility to switch the conduction by light with potentially large on-off-ratios. However, the fabrication of MOF materials in a trial-and-error approach is cumbersome and would benefit significantly from in silico molecular design. Based on the previous proof-of-principle investigation, here, we design photoswitchable MOFs which incorporate spiropyran photoswitches at controlled positions with defined intermolecular distances and orientations. Using multiscale modelling and automated workflow protocols, four MOF candidates are characterized and their potential for photoswitching the conductivity is explored. Using ab initio calculations of the electronic coupling between the molecules in the MOF, we show that lattice distances and vibrational flexibility tremendously modulate the possible conduction photoswitching between spiropyran- and merocyanine-based MOFs upon light absorption, resulting in average on-off ratios higher than 530 and 4200 for p- and n-conduction switching, respectively. Further functionalization of the photoswitches with electron-donating/-withdrawing groups is demonstrated to shift the energy levels of the frontier orbitals, permitting a guided design of new spiropyran-based photoswitches towards controlled modification between electron and hole conduction in a MOF.

Abstract
The effectiveness of time- and temperature-sensitive medical products (TTSMPs) (vaccines, medicines, and biological agents) is generally evaluated by sporadically checking the storage conditions recorded in electronic thermometers. However, electronic thermometers do not achieve all-time and all-regional record, resulting in the wrong evaluation of a single TTSMP and seriously endangering public health. Herein, we report a photonic crystal sensor for evaluating the effectiveness of a single TTSMP processing storage environment. The photonic crystal sensor assembled by colloidal microspheres (WO3-x nanospheres were added into the microsphere gap) generates a fascinating composite color of angle-dependent structural color (maximum reflectivity = 45%) and durative color (WO3-x coloration). Effectiveness evaluation principle reveals that the pattern on the sensor, which was printed by the composite color, fades sensitively to time and temperature, thus having different visible periods (0-21 days affected by temperature). The visible periods of the patterns can be used to evaluate a single TTSMP's effectiveness stored under different temperatures. Furthermore, the photonic crystal sensor shows outstanding flexibility and slight adhesion, offering a promising application toward the effectiveness evaluation of TTSMPs throughout storage, transportation, and sales processes.

Abstract
Photonic crystal (PhC) light emitter (PC-LE) devices attract extensive attention in anticounterfeiting for their manipulated light emission and iridescent structural color, but their large-scale three-dimensional fabrication is still limited by poor mechanical strength and microstructural defects. Herein, colloidal nanospheres incorporated with photoluminescent dye were assembled to three-dimensional PC-LE devices through a large-scale compressing-induced strategy, which realized dual iridescent and reversible photochromic colors. Periodically distributed refractive indices between molten molecular chains and cross-linked nanospheres generated the iridescent structural color. Subsequently, the device surface reflected another different structural color after partially removing the surface molecular chains by etching. The light emission intensity of the dye was sufficient to obtain the reversible photochromic colors. Simultaneously, the manipulation toward light emission of the photonic band gap achieved the shape of the photoluminescent intenstiy spectra that varied in accordance with the reflective peak. Furthermore, by use of screen-printing tools and transparent masking glue, the etching process became an inkless color printing process, generating a colorful bar code (2 cm × 2 cm) on the device surface. The code was reversibly displayed and encrypted through control of the reflection and emission of light. Significantly, the PC-LE devices opened up a new route for advanced display, color printing, and anticounterfeiting stickers.

Abstract
Controlling the switching efficiency of photoactive hybrid systems is an obligatory key prerequisite for systematically improving the design of functional materials. By modulating the degree of fluorination and the amount being embedded into porous hosts, the E/Z ratios of fluorinated azobenzenes were adjusted as both functions of substitution and the degree of loading. Octafluoroazobenzene (F8-AZB) and perfluoroazobenzene (F10-AZB) were inserted into porous DMOF-1. Especially for perfluoroazobenzene (F10-AZB), an immense stabilization of the E isomer was observed. In complementary molecular dynamics simulations performed at the DFTB (density functional tight binding) level, an in-depth characterization of the interactions of the different photoisomers and the host structure was carried out. On the basis of the resulting structural and energetic data, the experimentally observed increase in the amount of the Z conformer for F8-AZB can be explained, while the stabilization of E-F10-AZB can be directly related to a fundamentally different interaction motif compared to its tetra- and octafluorinated counterparts.

Abstract
Efficient photoswitching in the solid-state remains rare, yet is highly desirable for the design of functional solid materials. In particular, for molecular solar thermal energy storage materials high conversion to the metastable isomer is crucial to achieve high energy density. Herein, we report that 4-methoxyazobenzene (MOAB) can be occluded into the pores of a metal-organic framework Zn2(BDC)2(DABCO), where BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane. The occluded MOAB guest molecules show near-quantitative E → Z photoisomerization under irradiation with 365 nm light. The energy stored within the metastable Z-MOAB molecules can be retrieved as heat during thermally-driven relaxation to the ground-state E-isomer. The energy density of the composite is 101 J g-1 and the half-life of the Z-isomer is 6 days when stored in the dark at ambient temperature.

Abstract
The incorporation of photoactive donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) moieties into Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) provides a new route to the development of visible light switching materials. Herein, a DUT-5 mixed-linker defect series was exploited to produce a derivative group of DASA-modified materials via postsynthetic modification (PSM). The photoactive MOFs exhibited conversion stimulated by visible wavelengths and were stable following multiple cycles. Thermodynamic and metastable states persisted over an extended time period.

Abstract
Understanding the interactions between the single components of hybrid systems is essential to drive the development of advanced functional materials. A prerequisite for this is the systematic variation of the building blocks of such compounds. Focusing on spiropyran@metal-organic framework (MOF) composite materials with noncovalently attached spiropyran dyes, both the host scaffold and the dye molecules can be systematically tuned. In this work, a broad substitution pattern was applied to systematically elucidate the characteristics of the resulting hybrid materials as a function of the supplemental substitution on spiropyran. The newly developed 12 composites exhibit substitution and host-dependent optical characteristics, which are particularly affected by the substitution of the 6'-position on the chromene ring. Through the favorable combination of the MOF host's polarity and an adequate strength of the spiropyran's indolinedonor-chromeneacceptor pair, reversible conversion between photoisomers is efficiently accomplished, especially for nitro-substituted spiropyrans inside MIL-68(In).

Abstract
Considering porous materials as host matrices is an elegant way to enable photoswitching of non-covalently attached organic dyes even in the solid state. By focusing on the resulting optical properties as a function of loading degree and synthesis procedure, the occurring host-guest and guest-guest interactions can be determined and further exploited. In the course of this study, the photochromic behavior of ortho-tetrafluoroazobenzene (tF-AZB) inside flexible DMOF-1 was investigated from these points of view. It was found that depending on the loading degree and temperature, tF-AZB shows varying E/Z ratios and switching efficiency. For systems with low loading, reversible visible light induced isomerization was observed over ten switching cycles: Upon violet light exposure, formation of 100% E isomer was generated, while green light irradiation resulted in ∼60% Z-tF-AZB. Complementary molecular dynamics simulations at DFTB (density functional tight binding)-level revealed changing binding sites for Z-tF-AZB inside DMOF-1. For the E isomer, only low oscillations have been found, which in turn display a rare T-stacking interaction. Although the interaction strengths of the E and Z isomers with DMOF-1 are in the same range, the different mobility of both isomers due to varying binding sites explains the preference of the E isomer even upon green light exposure.

Abstract
The preparation of functional materials from photoswitchable molecules where the molecular changes multiply to macroscopic effects presents a great challenge in material science. An attractive approach is the incorporation of the photoswitches in nanoporous, crystalline metal-organic frameworks, MOFs, often showing remote-controllable chemical and physical properties. Because of the short light-penetration depth, thin MOF films are particularly interesting, allowing the entire illumination of the material. In the present progress report, we review and discuss the status of photoswitchable MOF films. These films may serve as model systems for quantifying the isomer switching yield by infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as for uptake experiments exploring the switching effects on the host-guest interaction, especially on guest adsorption and diffusion. In addition, the straightforward device integration facilitates various experiments. In this way, unique features were demonstrated, such as photoswitchable membrane separation with continuously tunable selectivity, light-switchable proton conductivity of the guests in the pores, and remote-controllable electronic conduction.

Abstract
We demonstrate herein an all-optical switch based on stimuli-responsive and photochromic-free metal-organic framework (HKUST-1). Ultrafast near-infrared laser pulses stimulate a reversible 0.4 eV blue shift of the absorption band with up to 200 s-1 rate due to dehydration and concomitant shrinking of the structure-forming [Cu2 C4 O8 ] cages of HKUST-1. Such light-induced switching enables the remote modulation of intensities of photoluminescence of single crystals of HKUST-1 as well visible radiation passing through the crystal by 2 order of magnitude. This opens up the possibility of utilyzing stimuli-responsive MOFs for all-optical data processing devices.

Abstract
When fabricating macroscopic devices exploiting the properties of organic chromophores, the corresponding molecules need to be condensed into a solid material. Since optical absorption properties are often strongly affected by interchromophore interactions, solids with a well-defined structure carry substantial advantages over amorphous materials. Here, the metal-organic framework (MOF)-based approach is presented. By appropriate functionalization, most organic chromophores can be converted to function as linkers, which can coordinate to metal or metal-oxo centers so as to yield stable, crystalline frameworks. Photoexcitations in such chromophore-based MOFs are surveyed, with a special emphasis on light-switchable MOFs from photochromic molecules. The conventional powder form of MOFs obtained using solvothermal approaches carries certain disadvantages for optical applications, such as limited efficiency resulting from absorption and light scattering caused by the (micrometer-sized) powder particles. How these problems can be avoided by using MOF thin films is demonstrated.

Abstract
In this Review, we showcase the upsurge in the development and fundamental photophysical studies of more than 100 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as versatile stimuli-responsive platforms. The goal is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the field of photoresponsive MOFs while delving into the underlying photophysical properties of various classes of photochromic molecules including diarylethene, azobenzene, and spiropyran as well as naphthalenediimide and viologen derivatives integrated inside a MOF matrix as part of a framework backbone, as a ligand side group, or as a guest. In particular, the geometrical constraints, photoisomerization rates, and electronic structures of photochromic molecules integrated inside a rigid MOF scaffold are discussed. Thus, this Review reflects on the challenges and opportunities of using photoswitchable MOFs in next-generation multifunctional stimuli-responsive materials while highlighting their use in optoelectronics, erasable inks, or as the next generation of sensing devices.

Abstract
Two novel Cu(II)-based metal-organic frameworks [C40H34Cu2N6O18 (1) and C20H18CuN2O10 (2)] have been synthesized using 2-aminopyrimidine or pyrazine ligands and phthalate ion and characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Both 1 and 2 show electrical conductivity and photosensitivity, evidencing their potentiality in optoelectronic device applications. Experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the electrical conductivity under irradiation of visible light increases compared to that under dark condition (photosensitive Schottky barrier diode behavior), especially in complex 2. Both 1 and 2 have been successfully applied in technologically challenging thin-film active devices.

Abstract
A facile electrochemical plating strategy has been employed to prepare the electroactive metal-organic framework film (NENU-3) onto a copper electrode in the acid electrolyte containing 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) and phosphotungstic acid (PTA). The as-made NENU-3 films have been characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). These analyses indicate that NENU-3 films have high phase purity and high stability. Further, different electrochemical techniques are utilized for measuring the electrochemical behaviors of the NENU-3 film electrodes. Accordingly, the kinetic parameters of a NENU-3 film electrode towards the electrocatalytic reduction of bromate are obtained, including the electron transfer coefficient (α), the catalytic rate constant (ks), and the diffusion coefficient (D). The film electrodes present excellent electrocatalytic ability for the bromate reduction, and can be used successfully for the amperometric detection of bromate. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed sensor exhibits a wide linear range (0.05-72.74 mM) and a lower detection limit (12 μM) measured by chronoamperometry (CA). Moreover, the films possess high electrochemical stability and strong anti-interference capability in the bromate detection process. It has been demonstrated that the electrochemical plating method reported here offers a reliable and efficient way to fabricate MOF films on conductive substrates for bromate detection.

Abstract
A mechanically active spiropyran (SP) mechanophore is incorporated into the backbone of prepolymer which is further end-capped with ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) or urethane. Strong mechanochromic reaction of SP arises in the bulk films of UPy containing materials whereas much weaker activation occurs in urethane containing counterparts, coincident with their stress-strain responses. The difference in the magnitudes of supramolecular interactions leads to different degrees of chain orientation and strain induced crystallization (SIC) in the bulk and consequently distinct capabilities to transfer the load to the mechanophores. This study may aid the design of novel mechanoresponsive materials whose mechanoresponsiveness can be tailored by tuning supramolecular interactions.

Abstract
The first systems associating in a single molecule polyoxotungstates (POTs) and photochromic organic groups have been elaborated. Using the (TBA)4[PW11O39{Sn(C6H4I)}] precursor, two hybrid organic-inorganic species where a spiropyran derivative (SP) has been covalently grafted onto a {PW11Sn} fragment via a Sonogashira coupling have been successfully obtained. Alternatively, a complex containing a silicotungstate {PW11Si2} unit connected to two spiropyran entities has been characterized. The purity of these species has been assessed using several techniques, including (1)H and (31)P NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and electrochemical measurements. The optical properties of the hybrid materials have been investigated both in solution and in the solid state. These studies reveal that the grafting of SPs onto POTs does not significantly alter the photochromic behavior of the organic chromophore in solution. In contrast, these novel hybrid SP-POT materials display highly effective solid-state photochromism from neutral SP molecules initially nonphotochromic in the crystalline state. The photoresponses of the SP-POT systems in the solid state strongly depend on the nature and the number of grafted SP groups.
