Alkaline Stability of Low Oxophilicity Metallopolymer Anion-Exchange Membranes

Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are promising energy conversion devices due to their high efficiency and relatively low cost. Nonetheless, AEMFC operation time is currently limited by the low chemical stability of their polymeric anion-exchange membranes. In recent years, metallopolymers, where the metal centers assume the ion transport function, have been proposed as a chemically stable alternative. Here we present a systematic study using a polymer backbone with side-chain N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands complexed to various metals with low oxophilicity, such as copper, zinc, nickel, and gold. The golden metallopolymer, using the metal with the lowest oxophilicity, demonstrates exceptional alkaline stability, far superior to state-of-the-art quaternary ammonium cations, as well as good in-situ AEMFC results. These results demonstrate that judiciously designed metallopolymers may be superior to purely organic membranes and provides a scientific base for further developments in the field.

Blue-emitting acridine-tagged silver(i)-bis-N-heterocyclic carbene

Herein, the photophysical properties of an acridine derivative of a bis-N-heterocyclic carbene silver complex were investigated. The HOMO and LUMO energy differences between 9-[(N-methyl imidazol-2-ylidene)]acridine and 4,5-bis[(N-methyl-imidazol-2-ylidene)methyl]acridine were theoretically compared. Based on the calculation, the 4,5-bis N-heterocyclic carbene-tethered acridine type of ligand was found to be a potential source for tuning the fluorescent nature of the resultant metal derivatives. Thus, a 4,5-bis N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-tethered acridine silver(i) salt was synthesized, and its photophysical properties were investigated. The 4,5-bis[(N-isopropylimidazol-2-ylidene)methyl]acridine silver(i) hexafluorophosphate complex was obtained from the reaction between [4,5-bis{(N-isopropylimidazolium)methyl}acridine] hexafluorophosphate and Ag₂O in very good yield; this molecule was characterized by elemental analysis and FTIR, multinuclear (¹H and ¹³C) NMR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. The molecular structure has been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which has revealed that the complex is a homoleptic mononuclear silver(i) cationic solid. The charge of the Ag(i)–NHC cation is balanced by the hexafluorophosphate anion. The cationic moieties are closely packed in the chair and inverted chair forms where silver(i) possesses a quasi-linear geometry. Moreover, the silver complex provided blue emission from all the three excitations with good fluorescence quantum yield. The fluorescence lifetime of the silver(i) complex has been determined using the time-correlated single photon counting technique. Interestingly, the fluorescence decay pattern and the fluorescence lifetimes of the silver complex are largely different from those of the parent ligand acridine imidazolium salt. Moreover, the theoretical predictions have been found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

Dinuclear Nickel Complexes of Thiolate-Functionalized Carbene Ligands and Their Electrochemical Properties

Four dimeric nickel(II) complexes [Ni₂Cl₂(BnC₂S)₂] [1], [Ni₂Cl₂(BnC₃S)₂] [2], [Ni₂(PyC₂S)₂]Br₂ [3]Br₂, and [Ni₂(PyC₃S)₂]Br₂ [4]Br₂ of four different thiolate-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were synthesized, and their structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The four ligands differ by the alkyl chain length between the thiolate group and the benzimidazole nitrogen (two −C₂– or three −C₃– carbon atoms) and the second functionality at the NHC being a benzyl (Bn) or a pyridylmethyl (Py) group. The nickel(II) ions are coordinated to the NHC carbon atom and the pendent thiolate group, which bridges to the second nickel(II) ion creating the dinuclear structure. Additionally, in compounds [1] and [2], the fourth coordination position of the square-planar Ni(II) centers is occupied by the halide ions, whereas in [3]²⁺ and [4]²⁺, the additional pendant pyridylmethyl groups complete the coordination spheres of the nickel ions. The electrochemical properties of the four complexes were studied using cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential coulometry methods. The thiolate-functionalized carbene complexes [1] and [2] appear to be poor electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction; the complexes [3]Br₂ and [4]Br₂, bearing an extra pyridylmethyl group, show higher catalytic activity in proton reduction, indicating that the pyridine group plays an important role in the catalytic cycle.

Metal Confinement through N-(9-Alkyl)fluorenyl-Substituted N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and Its Consequences in Gold-Catalysed Reactions Involving Enynes

A series of gold(I) and gold(III) complexes containing bulky bis-N,N'-(9-alkylfluorenyl) heterocyclic carbene (^R F-NHC) ligands have been prepared in high yields from appropriate imidazolinium, imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts. In all complexes, the carbene ligand provides high steric protection of the Au-X bond trans to the carbenic C atom. Irrespective of the metal oxidation state, the complexes showed high efficiency in a tandem 3,3-rearrangement/Nazarov reaction of an enynyl acetate. One of the Au^III complexes, [AuCl₃ (^R F-NHC)], was further found to be suitable for the efficient cyclisation of a propargylcarboxamide. Furthermore, unlike related NHC-gold(I) complexes based on conventional bulky N-heterocyclic carbenes (notably, 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr), 1,3-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) and 1,3-(bis-tert-butyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (ItBu)), the studied [Au^I Cl(^R F-NHC)] complexes catalysed the conversion of a 1,6-enyne in the presence of indole into a single product; this arises from the embracing character of the ligand, which prevents indole addition on one of the catalytic intermediates. A structure/selectivity relationship was established for all carbenes tested that took into account percent buried volumes and topographic steric maps. The results illustrate the high potential of confining NHCs in organic synthesis.

PEGylated N-Heterocyclic Carbene Anchors Designed To Stabilize Gold Nanoparticles in Biologically Relevant Media

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as versatile ligands for surface functionalization. Their ease of synthesis and ability to form strong bonds with a range of substrates provide a unique complement to traditional surface modification methods. Gold nanoparticles (NPs) are a particularly useful class of materials whose applications intimately depend on surface functionalization. Here we report the development of PEGylated-NHC ligands for Au-NP surfaces and the first example of NHC-functionalized NPs that are compatible with biologically relevant conditions. Our PEGylated-NHC-Au-NPs are stable toward aggregation in aqueous solutions in the pH range of 3-14, in <250 mM electrolyte solutions, at high and low temperatures (95 and -78 °C), in cell culture media, and in aqueous H2O2 solutions. This work demonstrates for the first time that NHCs can serve as anchors for water-soluble Au-NPs and opens the door to potential biomedical applications of NHC surface anchors.
