Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) are carbon nanoparticles with sizes below 10 nm and have attracted attention due to their relatively low toxicity, great biocompatibility, water solubility, facile synthesis, and exceptional photoluminescence properties. Accordingly, CDs have been widely exploited in different sensing and biomedical applications, for example, metal sensing, catalysis, biosensing, bioimaging, drug and gene delivery, and theragnostic applications. Similarly, the well-known properties of silica, such as facile surface functionalization, good biocompatibility, high surface area, and tunable pore volume, have allowed the loading of diverse inorganic and organic moieties and nanoparticles, creating complex hybrid nanostructures that exploit distinct properties (optical, magnetic, metallic, mesoporous, etc.) for sensing, biosensing, bioimaging, diagnosis, and gene and drug delivery. In this context, CDs have been successfully grafted into diverse silica nanostructures through various synthesis methods (e.g., solgel chemistry, inverse microemulsion, surfactant templating, and molecular imprinting technology (MIT)), imparting hybrid nanostructures with multimodal properties for distinct objectives. This review discusses the recently employed synthesis methods for CDs and silica nanoparticles and their typical applications. Then, we focus on combined synthesis techniques of CD-silica nanostructures and their promising biosensing operations. Finally, we overview the most recent potential applications of these materials as innovative smart hybrid nanocarriers and theragnostic agents for the nanomedical field.

Abstract
"Hairy" nanoparticles (HNPs), i.e. inorganic NPs functionalized with polymer chains, are promising building blocks for the synthesis of advanced nanocomposite (NC) materials having several technological applications. Recent evidence shows that HNPs self-organize in a variety of anisotropic structures, resulting in an improvement of the functional properties of the materials, in which are embedded. In this paper, we propose a three-step colloidal synthesis of spherical SiO2-HNPs, with controlled particle morphology and surface chemistry. In detail, the SiO2 core, synthesized by a modified Stöber method, was first functionalized with a short-chain amino-silane, which acts as an anchor, and then covered by maleated polybutadiene (PB), a rubbery polymer having low glass transition temperature, rarely considered until now. An extensive investigation by a multi-technique analysis demonstrates that the synthesis of SiO2-HNPs is simple, scalable, and potentially applicable to different kind of NPs and polymers. Morphological analysis shows the overall distribution of SiO2-HNPs with a certain degree of spatial organization, suggesting that the polymer coating induces a modification of NP-NP interactions. The role of the surface PB brushes in influencing the special arrangement of SiO2-HNPs was observed also in cis-1,4-polybutadiene (cis-PB), since the resulting NC exhibited the particle packing in "string-like" superstructures. This confirms the tendency of SiO2-HNPs to self-assemble and create alternative structures in polymer NCs, which may impart them peculiar functional properties.

Abstract
Targeting enrichment of nanocarriers at tumor sites and effective drug release are critical in cancer treatment. Accordingly, we used fluorescent zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin (FZIF-8/DOX) as the core and a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as the shell to synthesize tumor-sensitive biodegradable FZIF-8/DOX-MIP nanoparticles (FZIF-8/DOX-MIPs). The MIP prepared with the epitope of CD59 cell membrane glycoprotein as the template allowed FZIF-8/DOX-MIPs to be enriched to tumor sites by actively targeting recognition of MCF-7 cancer cells (CD59-positive). Moreover, using N,N'-diacrylylcystamine as the cross-linker and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate as the main monomer, the MIP's framework will be broken under the stimulation of a tumor microenvironment (high-concentration glutathione and weakly acidic), so that the internal FZIF-8/DOX is exposed to a microacidic environment to release DOX through further degradation. More importantly, the ability of FZIF-8/DOX-MIPs in targeted fluorescence imaging and effective drug release has been validated both in vitro and in vivo. Compared to other cells and nanoparticles, FZIF-8/DOX-MIPs were more capable of being phagocytosed by MCF-7 cells and were more lethal to MCF-7 cells. In the comparative experiments carried out on tumor-bearing mice, FZIF-8/DOX-MIPs had the best inhibitory effect on the growth of MCF-7 tumors. Furthermore, the FZIF-8/DOX-MIPs can serve as a diagnostic agent because of the active targeting of MCF-7 cells and the stronger red fluorescence of the embedded carbon quantum dots. Because of the active targeting ability, good biocompatibility, tumor-sensitive biodegradability, and effective drug release performance, FZIF-8/DOX-MIPs can be widely used in tumor imaging and treatment.

Abstract
A multifunctional diagnosis and treatment integration platform is crucial in cancer treatments. Here, we show that by integrating Gd-doped silicon nanoparticles (Si-Gd NPs), chlorine e6 (Ce6), doxorubicin (DOX), zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) polymers (HOOC-PDMAEMA-SH), and folic acid-poly(ethylene glycol)-maleimide (MaL-PEG-FA) into one single nanoplatform by a self-assembly method, novel multifunctional MOFs (named FZIF-8/DOX-PD-FA) are synthesized with great biocompatibility and tumor targeting as well as pH responsiveness and no drug leakage for drug delivery. In the design, Si-Gd NPs and Ce6 embedded in the nanocomposites are used for magnetic resonance and fluorescence dual-modal imaging, respectively. DOX loaded by the FZIF-8/DOX-PD-FA porous structure is used for chemotherapy, while Ce6 is excited by near-infrared radiation (NIR) for photodynamic therapy. In addition, the pH-responsive ability of HOOC-PDMAEMA-SH to effectively prevent drug leakage is demonstrated by drug release studies in vitro. From the results of confocal microscopy imaging in vitro and fluorescence/magnetic resonance imaging in vivo, FZIF-8/DOX-PD-FA showed a targeting effect on MCF-7 cancer cells. More importantly, the results of treatment experiments on tumor-bearing mice showed that the tumor volume of the FZIF-8/DOX-PD-FA + NIR group is decreased the most compared to the original volume. Owing to the unique dual-modal imaging capability and excellent chemo-/photodynamic combinational cancer therapy effect, the present hybrid nanocarrier provides a new research platform for a new generation of theranostic nanoparticles.

Abstract
A straightforward methodology for the synthesis of isothiocyanate-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) by exposure of aminated MSNs to 1,1′-thiocarbonyldi-2(1H)-pyridone is reported. These nanoparticles are chemically stable, water tolerant, and readily react with primary amines without the formation of any by-product. This feature allows the easy modification of the surface of the nanoparticles for tuning their physical properties and the introduction of gatekeepers on the pore outlets. As a proof-of-concept, amino-isothiocyanate-functionalized MSNs have been used for the design of a nanocontainer able to release the drug Ataluren. The release profile of the drug can be easily fine-tuned with the careful choice of the capping amine.

Abstract
In this work, novel urchin-like Fe3O4@polydopamine (PDA)-Ag hollow microspheres have been prepared via a facile synthesis method by in situ reduction and growth of Ag nanoparticles on mussel-inspired PDA layers coated on Fe3O4 hollow cores. The catalytic reduction efficiency and adsorption performance of the as-prepared urchin-like Fe3O4@polydopamine (PDA)-Ag hollow microspheres for model organic dyes (i.e., methylene blue and rhodamine B) under varying pH condition have been systematically investigated, which are demonstrated to be significantly enhanced as compared to that of spherical (relatively smooth) solid Fe3O4@PDA-Ag microspheres. The as-prepared urchin-like Fe3O4@PDA-Ag hollow microspheres show high reusability, easy separability, and fast regeneration ability, with no obvious drop in the catalytic and adsorption efficiency after cyclic reuse. The versatile PDA coatings on the urchin-like microspheres allow further surface functionalization for development of multifunctional catalyst and adsorbent materials. This work provides a very useful and facile methodology for synthesizing and tuning the urchin-like morphology of Fe3O4@PDA-Ag microspheres, with great potential applications in catalysis and wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive nanoparticles (NPs) based on sustainable polymeric feedstock still need more exploration in comparison with NPs based on synthetic polymers. In this report, stimuli-responsive NPs from novel ionic cellulose derivatives were prepared via a facile nanoprecipitation. Cellulose 10-undecenoyl ester (CUE) with a degree of substitution (DS) of 3 was synthesized by esterification of cellulose with 10-undecenoyl chloride. Then, CUE was modified by photo-induced thiol-ene reactions, in order to obtain organo-soluble ionic cellulose derivatives with DSs of ∼3, namely cellulose 11-((3-carboxyl)ethylthio)undecanoate (CUE-MPA), cellulose 11-((2-aminoethyl)thio)undecanoate (CUE-CA), cellulose 11-(2-(2-(diethylamino)ethyl)thio)undecanoate (CUE-DEAET) and cellulose 11-(2-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)thio)undecanoate (CUE-DMAET). CUE-MPA could be transformed into NPs with average diameters in the range of 80-330 nm, but these NPs did not show particular stimuli-responsive properties. Moreover, the dropping technique resulted in smaller NPs than a dialysis technique. Stable NPs with average diameters in the range of 90-180 nm showing pH-responsive and switchable sizes were obtained from CUE-DEAET and CUE-DMAET possessing tertiary amines using nanoprecipitation. Thus, altering the terminal functional groups will be a new approach to prepare stimuli-responsive cellulose-derived polymeric NPs.
