Diagnostic value of adenohypophyseal MRI features in female children with precocious puberty

AIM

To evaluate the diagnostic value of adenohypophyseal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features for precocious puberty (PP) in female children and also to establish a non-invasive diagnostic approach in clinics.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 126 female children (37, 57, and 32 female children clinically diagnosed with central PP [CPP], incomplete PP [IPP], and controls, respectively) were enrolled in this study. Data were collected and analysed using analysis of variance. Pearson correlation and stepwise multivariate linear regression analysis were used to examine the association and build prediction models. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy.

RESULTS

The values of adenohypophysis volume (aPV), adenohypophysis height (aPH), and signal-intensity ratio (SIR), height, weight, and seven laboratory testing characteristics were correlated closely with the activation status of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad axis in the different groups (all p<0.05). Model 1 including aPV, weight, and aPH and Model 2 including SIR, aPV, and height were built to obtain predicted luteinising hormone (LH; R2 = 0.271) and LH/follicle stimulating hormone (FSH; R2 = 0.311). ROC analysis showed the predicted LH, predicted LH/FSH, and aPV were the top 3 best predictors in distinguishing CPP from controls (AUC = 0.969, 0.949, and 0.938) while predicted LH/FSH was the best predictor in distinguishing CPP from IPP and controls (AUC = 0.829 and 0.828).

CONCLUSION

The adenohypophysis volume itself and the prediction models including main adenohypophyseal MRI features increased diagnostic efficiency for PP and offered a non-invasive and credible diagnostic method.

An in-sensor humidity computing system for contactless human-computer interaction

Being capable of processing large amounts of redundant data and decreasing power consumption, in-sensor computing approaches play significant roles in neuromorphic computing and are attracting increasing interest in perceptual information processing. Herein, we proposed a high performance humidity-sensitive memristor based on a Ti/graphene oxide (GO)/HfOx/Pt structure and verified its potential for application in remote health management and contactless human-machine interfaces. Since GO possesses abundant hydrophilic groups (carbonyl, epoxide, and hydroxyl), the memristor shows a high humidity sensitivity, fast response, and wide response range. By utilizing the proton-modulated redox reaction, humidity exposure to the memristor induces a dynamic change in the switching between high and low resistance states, ensuring essential synaptic learning functions, such as paired-pulse facilitation, spike number-dependent plasticity, and spike amplitude-dependent plasticity. More importantly, based on the humidity-induced salient features originating from the abundant hydrophilic functional groups in GO, we have implemented a noncontact human-machine interface utilizing the respiratory mode in humans, demonstrating the potential of promoting health monitoring applications and effectively blocking virus transmission. In addition, the high recognition accuracy of contactless handwriting in a 5 × 5 array artificial neural network was successfully achieved, which is attributed to the excellent emulated synaptic behaviors. This study provides a feasible method to develop an excellent humidity-sensitive memristor for constructing efficient in-sensor computing for application in health management and contactless human-computer interaction.

Correlation between iron metabolism indicators and programmed death ligand 1 expression in advanced non-small cell lung cancer

The dysregulation of iron metabolism is closely linked to the onset and progression of lung cancer. This study aimed to explore the association between iron metabolism indicators (serum iron, transferrin, ferritin) and the expression level of programmed death factor ligand 1 in primary lesions of advanced non-small cell lung cancer. A cohort of 62 patients, including 42 men and 20 women, was recruited from October 2022 to July 2023, all diagnosed with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, confirmed through radiographic imaging and histopathological analysis. Comprehensive clinical data (such as gender, age, familial lung cancer history, smoking history, pathological classification, clinical stage, etc.) and concentrations of fasting serum iron, transferrin, and ferritin were collected. Patients were categorized into PD-L1 negative (<1% expression) and programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) positive (≥1% expression) groups based on PD-L1 expression levels in tumor tissues. Subsequently, the correlation between levels of serum iron, transferrin, ferritin, and PD-L1 expression in advanced non-small cell lung cancer were examined. Patients in the PD-L1 positive group exhibited lower levels of peripheral serum iron and transferrin compared to those in the PD-L1 negative group (P<0.05). For patients exhibiting positive PD-L1 expression, a negative correlation was observed between PD-L1 expression and both serum iron and transferrin levels (r = -0.465, P=0.003; r = -0.447, P=0.005), and a positive correlation was noted between PD-L1 expression and ferritin levels (r=0.393, P=0.015). We conclude that in In patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, serum iron and transferrin levels can serve as partial predictors of PD-L1 expression; among those positive for PD-L1, a significant association exists between indicators of iron metabolism and PD-L1 expression.

Porous crystalline materials for memories and neuromorphic computing systems

Porous crystalline materials usually include metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) and zeolites, which exhibit exceptional porosity and structural/composition designability, promoting the increasing attention in memory and neuromorphic computing systems in the last decade. From both the perspective of materials and devices, it is crucial to provide a comprehensive and timely summary of the applications of porous crystalline materials in memory and neuromorphic computing systems to guide future research endeavors. Moreover, the utilization of porous crystalline materials in electronics necessitates a shift from powder synthesis to high-quality film preparation to ensure high device performance. This review highlights the strategies for preparing porous crystalline materials films and discusses their advancements in memory and neuromorphic electronics. It also provides a detailed comparative analysis and presents the existing challenges and future research directions, which can attract the experts from various fields (e.g., materials scientists, chemists, and engineers) with the aim of promoting the applications of porous crystalline materials in memory and neuromorphic computing systems.

Covalent Organic Frameworks for Neuromorphic Devices

Neuromorphic computing could enable the potential to break the inherent limitations of conventional von Neumann architectures, which has led to widespread research interest in developing novel neuromorphic memory devices, such as memristors and bioinspired artificial synaptic devices. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as crystalline porous polymers, have tailorable skeletons and pores, providing unique platforms for the interplay with photons, excitons, electrons, holes, ions, spins, and molecules. Such features encourage the rising research interest in COF materials in neuromorphic electronics. To develop high-performance COF-based neuromorphic memory devices, it is necessary to comprehensively understand materials, devices, and applications. Therefore, this Perspective focuses on discussing the use of COF materials for neuromorphic memory devices in terms of molecular design, thin-film processing, and neuromorphic applications. Finally, we provide an outlook for future directions and potential applications of COF-based neuromorphic electronics.

Association of body mass index and intestinal (faecal) Streptococcus in adults in Xining city, China P.R

Body mass index (BMI) and gut microbiota show significant interaction, but most studies on the relationship between BMI and gut microbiota have been done in Western countries. Relationships that are also identified in other cultural backgrounds are likely to have functional importance. Hence here we explore gut microbiota in adults living in Xining city (China P.R.) and relate results to subject BMI. Analysis of bacterial 16s rRNA gene was performed on faecal samples from participants with normal-weight (n=24), overweight (n=24), obesity (n=11) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) (n=8). The results show that unweighted but not weighted Unifrac distance was significantly different when gut microbiota composition was compared between the groups. Importantly, the genus Streptococcus was remarkably decreased in both obese subjects and subjects suffering from T2D, as compared to normal-weight subjects. Accordingly, strong association was identified between the genus Streptococcus and BMI and especially Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophiles was a major contributor in this respect. As previous studies have shown that Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophiles is also negatively associated with obesity in Western cohorts, our results suggest that this species is a potential probiotic for the prevention of obesity and related disorders.

[Advances of enhancers in regulating craniomaxillofacial development in mammals]

As a key regulatory element of gene differential expression, enhancer plays a crucial role in craniomaxillofacial development through regulating the spatiotemporal expression of target genes to promote tissue-specific differentiation. With the development of CRISPR and chromosome conformation capture technique, the function of enhancer and its regulatory mechanism has been explored in depth. This paper gave a systematic review on the mechanism of enhancer regulating target gene expression and the role of enhancer in oral craniofacial development and malformation.

Filament Engineering of Two-Dimensional h-BN for a Self-Power Mechano-Nociceptor System

The switching variability caused by intrinsic stochasticity of the ionic/atomic motions during the conductive filaments (CFs) formation process largely limits the applications of diffusive memristors (DMs), including artificial neurons, neuromorphic computing and artificial sensory systems. In this study, a DM device with improved device uniformity based on well-crystallized two-dimensional (2D) h-BN, which can restrict the CFs formation from three to two dimensions due to the high migration barrier of Ag⁺ between h-BN interlayer, is developed. The BN-DM has potential arrayable feature with high device yield of 88%, which can be applied for building a reservoir computing system for digital pattern recognition with high accuracy rate of 96%, and used as an artificial nociceptor to sense the external noxious stimuli and mimic the important biological nociceptor properties. By connecting the BN-DM to a self-made triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), a self-power mechano-nociceptor system, which can successfully mimic the important nociceptor features of "threshold", "relaxation" and "allodynia" is designed.

A van der Waals Integrated Damage-Free Memristor Based on Layered 2D Hexagonal Boron Nitride

2D materials with intriguing properties have been widely used in optoelectronics. However, electronic devices suffered from structural damage due to the ultrathin materials and uncontrolled defects at interfaces upon metallization, which hindered the development of reliable devices. Here, a damage-free Au/h-BN/Au memristor is reported using a clean, water-assisted metal transfer approach by physically assembling Au electrodes onto the layered h-BN which minimized the structural damage and undesired interfacial defects. The memristors demonstrate significantly improved performance with the coexistence of nonpolar and threshold switching as well as tunable current levels by controlling the compliance current, compared with devices with evaporated contacts. The devices integrated into an array show suppressed sneak path current and can work as both logic gates and latches to implement logic operations allowing in-memory computing. Cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis validates the feasibility of this nondestructive metal integration approach, the crucial role of high-quality atomically sharp interface in resistive switching, and a direct observation of percolation path. The underlying mechanism of boron vacancies-assisted transport is further supported experimentally by conductive atomic force microscopy free from process-induced damage, and theoretically by ab initio simulations.

Reconfigurable 2D WSe2 -Based Memtransistor for Mimicking Homosynaptic and Heterosynaptic Plasticity

The mimicking of both homosynaptic and heterosynaptic plasticity using a high-performance synaptic device is important for developing human-brain-like neuromorphic computing systems to overcome the ever-increasing challenges caused by the conventional von Neumann architecture. However, the commonly used synaptic devices (e.g., memristors and transistors) require an extra modulate terminal to mimic heterosynaptic plasticity, and their capability of synaptic plasticity simulation is limited by the low weight adjustability. In this study, a WSe₂ -based memtransistor for mimicking both homosynaptic and heterosynaptic plasticity is fabricated. By applying spikes on either the drain or gate terminal, the memtransistor can mimic common homosynaptic plasticity, including spiking rate dependent plasticity, paired pulse facilitation/depression, synaptic potentiation/depression, and filtering. Benefitting from the multi-terminal input and high adjustability, the resistance state number and linearity of the memtransistor can be improved by optimizing the conditions of the two inputs. Moreover, the device can successfully mimic heterosynaptic plasticity without introducing an extra terminal and can simultaneously offer versatile reconfigurability of excitatory and inhibitory plasticity. These highly adjustable and reconfigurable characteristics offer memtransistors more freedom of choice for tuning synaptic weight, optimizing circuit design, and building artificial neuromorphic computing systems.

Near-Infrared Artificial Synapses for Artificial Sensory Neuron System

The computing based on artificial neuron network is expected to break through the von Neumann bottleneck of traditional computer, and to greatly improve the computing efficiency, displaying a broad prospect in the application of artificial visual system. In the specific structural layout, it is a common method to connect the discrete photodetector with the artificial neuron in series, which enhances the complexity of signal recognition, conversion and storage. In this work, organic small molecule IR-780 iodide is inserted into the memory device as both the charge trapping layer and near-infrared (NIR) photoresponsive film. Through electrical and optical regulation, artificial synaptic functions including short-term plasticity, long-term plasticity, and spike rate dependence are realized. In the established artificial sensory neuron system, NIR optical pulses can significantly improve the spiking rate. Moreover, the spiking neural networks are further constructed by simulation for handwritten digit classification. This research may contribute to the development of light driven neural robots, optical signal encryption, and neural computing.

Stacked Two-Dimensional MXene Composites for an Energy-Efficient Memory and Digital Comparator

Two-dimensional MXene has enormous potential for application in industry and academia owing to its surface hydrophilicity and excellent electrochemical properties. However, the application of MXene in optoelectronic memory and logical computing is still facing challenges. In this study, an optoelectronic resistive random access memory (RRAM) based on silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs)@MXene-TiO₂ nanosheets (AMT) was prepared through a low-cost and facile hydrothermal oxidation process. The fabricated device exhibited a typical bipolar switching behavior and controllable SET voltage. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrated a 4-bit in-memory digital comparator with AMT RRAMs, which can replace five logic gates in a traditional approach. The AMT-based digital comparator may open the door for future integrated functions and applications in optoelectronic data storage and simplify the complex logic operations.

Modulation of Binary Neuroplasticity in a Heterojunction-Based Ambipolar Transistor

To keep pace with the upcoming big-data era, the development of a device-level neuromorphic system with highly efficient computing paradigms is underway with numerous attempts. Synaptic transistors based on an all-solution processing method have received growing interest as building blocks for neuromorphic computing based on spikes. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrated the dual operation mode in poly{2,2-(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-dioxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-diyl)dithieno[3,2-b]thiophene-5,5-diyl-alt-thiophen-2,5-diyl}(PDPPBTT)/ZnO junction-based synaptic transistor from ambipolar charge-trapping mechanism to analog the spiking interfere with synaptic plasticity. The heterojunction formed by PDPPBTT and ZnO layers serves as the basis for hole-enhancement and electron-enhancement modes of the synaptic transistor. Distinctive synaptic responses of paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) and paired-pulse depression (PPD) were configured to achieve the training/recognition function for digit image patterns at the device-to-system level. The experimental results indicate the potential application of the ambipolar transistor in future neuromorphic intelligent systems.

Recent advances in synthesis and application of perovskite quantum dot based composites for photonics, electronics and sensors

In recent years, halide perovskite quantum dots (HP-QDs) based composites have been widely developed and used in various applications owing to their unique photonic, electronic and mechanical properties, as well as high stability to water, oxygen, heat and illumination. Remarkable efforts have been made in the synthesis and applications of these materials in photonics, electronics, sensors and other fields. Besides these topics, we also cover enhancement of optoelectronic properties as well as chemical, thermal and photostability of HP-QDs-based composites. We hope this review will promote both the development and applications of perovskite-based materials.

Ultrafast extreme rejuvenation of metallic glasses by shock compression

Structural rejuvenation of glasses not only provides fundamental insights into their complicated dynamics but also extends their practical applications. However, it is formidably challenging to rejuvenate a glass on very short time scales. Here, we present the first experimental evidence that a specially designed shock compression technique can rapidly rejuvenate metallic glasses to extremely high-enthalpy states within a very short time scale of about 365 ± 8 ns. By controlling the shock stress amplitude, the shock-induced rejuvenation is successfully frozen at different degrees. The underlying structural disordering is quantitatively characterized by the anomalous boson heat capacity peak of glasses. A Deborah number, defined as a competition of time scales between the net structural disordering and the applied loading, is introduced to explain the observed ultrafast rejuvenation phenomena of metallic glasses.

Probiotics maintain intestinal secretory immunoglobulin A levels in healthy formula-fed infants: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

Formula-fed infants are more susceptible to infectious diseases because they lack the maternal immune factors transferred from breast milk, while their own immune system is still immature. As timely probiotic administration was suggested to promote immune system development in formula-fed infants, this study aimed at assessing the safety and the effects of a probiotic supplement (Bifidobacterium infantis R0033, Bifidobacterium bifidum R0071, and Lactobacillus helveticus R0052) on mucosal immune competence and digestive function in formula-fed infants. Healthy infants (3.5-6 months old) were randomised to receive either probiotic- (n=66) or placebo-supplemented (n=66) formula once a day for four weeks. In the probiotics group, faecal secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) levels remained similar between visit 2 (baseline; V2) and visit 3 (end-of-treatment; V3), but decreased in the placebo group. Changes in SIgA levels following treatment (log₁₀ΔV3-V2 [95%CI]) between the probiotic and placebo groups were statistically significant (23 ng/dl [-57;102] and -137 ng/dl [-212;-62], respectively (P=0.0044; ANCOVA)). While log₁₀ΔV3-V2 [95%CI] for salivary SIgA levels increased in both groups, this trend was more pronounced in the probiotics than in the placebo group with an increase of 123 ng/dl [9;236] and 37 ng/dL [-72;147], respectively (P=0.2829; ANCOVA). The weekly average number of stools/day was significantly higher in the probiotics group compared to placebo during the last week of treatment for the per protocol population. There was no difference in microbiota composition or anthropometric parameters between groups. No serious adverse event was reported, and all adverse events were mild and unrelated to the product or study. Our results show that formula-fed infants receiving probiotics maintained higher faecal SIgA levels at the end of the four-week treatment period, suggesting a positive effect of probiotics on SIgA production. This study demonstrates the safety of this probiotic formulation in infants. Formula-fed infants may benefit from probiotics supplementation to sustain the development of mucosal immunity.

Light Driven Active Transition of Switching Modes in Homogeneous Oxides/Graphene Heterostructure

Depending on the mobile species involved in the resistive switching process, redox random access memories and conductive bridge random access memories are widely studied with distinct switching mechanisms. Although the two resistance switching types have faithfully proved to be electrochemically linked in metal oxide-based memristive devices, the corresponding photo-induced transition has not yet been realized. Here, a photo-induced transition through the integration of a graphene layer into a titanium oxide-based memory device is demonstrated. Coupled with Raman mapping and an electron energy loss spectroscopy technique, the photo-induced interaction at the heterostructure of graphene/titanium oxide are considered to dominate the transition process. Moreover, a negative differential resistance effect is observed by controlling the applied voltage, which can be credited to the saturation of trap centers (oxygen vacancies) and the increase of interfacial barrier at the graphene/titanium oxide heterojunction.

miR-33a expression sensitizes Lgr5+ HCC-CSCs to doxorubicin via ABCA1

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are responsible for the unrestrained cell growth and chemo-resistance of malignant tumors. Reports about miR-33a in different type of cancer are limited, and it remains elusive whether there is a link between miR-33a and chemo-resistance of CSCs. Here we report that Lgr5+ hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells from primary tissues and cell lines behave similarly to CSCs and are chemo-resistant to doxorubicin. Significantly, reduced miR-33a expression is associated with the chemo-resistance of Lgr5+ HCC-CSCs, accompanied by an overexpression of ABCA1 which is identified as target of miR-33a by mainly using miRNA luciferase assay and western-blotting. We demonstrate that down-regulation of miR-33a expression directly contributes to chemo-resistance of Lgr5+ HCC-CSCs, and restoring miR-33a expression sensitizes them to doxorubicin via apoptosis by mainly using TUNEL assay, soft agar colony formation assay and xenograft assay. Additionally, reduced miR-33a expression in HCC tissues is associated with chemo-response and poor patient survival, which suggests the therapeutic potential of miR-33a. In conclusion, our work indicates that ectopic miR-33a expression sensitizes Lgr5+ HCC-CSCs to doxorubicin via direct targeting ABCA1, which sheds new light on understanding the mechanism of chemo-resistance in HCC-CSCs and contributes to development of potential therapeutics against HCC.

Configurable multi-state non-volatile memory behaviors in Ti3C2 nanosheets

MXenes have drawn considerable attention in both academia and industry due to their attractive properties, such as a combination of metallic conductivity and surface hydrophilicity. However, to the best of our knowledge, the potential use of MXenes in non-volatile resistive random access memories (RRAMs) has rarely been reported. In this paper, we first demonstrated a RRAM device with MXene (Ti3C2) as the active component. The Ti3C2-based RRAM exhibited typical bipolar switching behavior, long retention characteristics, low SET voltage, good mechanical stability and excellent reliability. By adjusting different compliance currents in the SET process, multi-state information storage was achieved. The charge trapping assisting hopping process is considered to be the main mechanism of resistive switching for this fabricated Ti3C2-based RRAM, which was verified by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). Moreover, this flexible Ti3C2-based RRAM, with good mechanical stability and long retention properties, was successfully fabricated on a plastic substrate. Ti3C2-based RRAMs may open the door to additional applications and functionalities, with high potential for application in flexible electronics.

Infrared-Sensitive Memory Based on Direct-Grown MoS2 -Upconversion-Nanoparticle Heterostructure

Photonic memories as an emerging optoelectronic technology have attracted tremendous attention in the past few years due to their great potential to overcome the von Neumann bottleneck and to improve the performance of serial computers. Nowadays, the decryption technology for visible light is mature in photonic memories. Nevertheless, near-infrared (NIR) photonic memristors are less progressed. Herein, an NIR photonic memristor based on MoS₂ -NaYF₄ :Yb³⁺ , Er³⁺ upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) nanocomposites is designed. Under excitation by 980 nm NIR light, the UCNPs show emissions well overlapping with the absorption band of the MoS₂ nanosheets. The heterostructure between the MoS₂ and the UCNPs acting as excitons generation/separation centers remarkably improves the NIR-light-controlled memristor performance. Furthermore, in situ conductive atomic force microscopy is employed to elucidate the photo-modulated memristor mechanism. This work provides novel opportunities for NIR photonic memory that holds promise in future multifunctional robotics and electronic eyes.

Developing ionic liquid forms of picloram with reduced negative effects on the aquatic environment

As a widely used herbicide, picloram has been frequently detected in the aquatic environment due to its high leaching potential and low adsorption by soil. To reduce aquatic environmental risk of this herbicide caused by leaching and runoff, five herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) based on picloram were prepared by pairing isopropylamine, octylamine, octadecylamine, 1-methylimidazole, 4-methylmorpholine respectively. Their physicochemical properties including water solubility, octanol-water partition coefficient, surface activity, leaching, as well as soil adsorption were compared. The results showed that these properties could be adjusted by appropriate selection of counter cations. The HILs with long alkyl chains in cations had low water solubility and leaching characteristics, good surface tension and lipophilicity, as well as high soil adsorption. Compared with currently used picloram in the forms of potassium salts, HIL3 had more excellent herbicidal activity against broadleaf weeds and may offer a lower use dosage. The HILs based on picloram can reduce its negative effects on the aquatic environment and can be used as a desirable alternative to commercial herbicidal formulations of picloram in future.

Selective CD28 Blockade Results in Superior Inhibition of Donor-Specific T Follicular Helper Cell and Antibody Responses Relative to CTLA4-Ig

Donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) are a barrier to improved long-term outcomes after kidney transplantation. Costimulation blockade with CTLA4-Ig has shown promise as a potential therapeutic strategy to control DSAs. T follicular helper (Tfh) cells, a subset of CD4⁺ T cells required for optimal antibody production, are reliant on the CD28 costimulatory pathway. We have previously shown that selective CD28 blockade leads to superior allograft survival through improved control of CD8⁺ T cells relative to CTLA4-Ig, but the impact of CD28-specific blockade on CD4⁺ Tfh cells is unknown. Thus, we identified and characterized donor-reactive Tfh cells in a murine skin transplant model and then used this model to evaluate the impact of selective CD28 blockade with an anti-CD28 domain antibody (dAb) on the donor-specific Tfh cell-mediated immune response. We observed that the anti-CD28 dAb led to superior inhibition of donor-reactive CXCR5⁺ PD-1^high Tfh cells, CD95⁺ GL7⁺ germinal center B cells and DSA formation compared with CTLA4-Ig. Interestingly, donor-reactive Tfh cells differentially upregulated CTLA4 expression, suggesting an important role for CTLA4 in mediating the superior inhibition observed with the anti-CD28 dAb. Therefore, selective CD28 blockade as a novel approach to control Tfh cell responses and prevent DSA after kidney transplantation warrants further study.

Prevalence of honeybee viruses in different regions of China and Argentina

Honeybees are threatened by various pathogens and parasites. More than 18 viruses have been described in honeybees and many of them have been detected in China and Argentina. In China, both Apis cerana and Apis mellifera are raised. In Argentina, beekeepers raise different ecotypes of A. mellifera: European honeybees (in both temperate and subtropical regions) and Africanised honeybees (in subtropical areas only). A thorough study was carried out in both China and Argentina to analyse the current virus presence and distribution in different climatic zones and gather information on different bee species/subspecies. Adult honeybees were collected from apiaries in temperate and subtropical regions of China (including areas with exclusive populations of A. mellifera, areas where A. mellifera and A. cerana co-exist, and areas with exclusive populations of A. cerana) and Argentina. Six viruses, namely, deformed wing virus (DWV), black queen cell virus (BQCV), sacbrood virus (SBV), chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV), acute bee paralysis virus (ABPV) and Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV) were detected in China, both in A. cerana and in A. mellifera, while four viruses (DWV, BQCV, CBPV and ABPV) were present in Argentina. Interestingly, multiple infections were commonly found in China, with up to five different viruses co-circulating in some colonies without apparent abnormalities. In this study, no Chinese samples were positive for slow bee paralysis virus. The most prevalent viruses were BQCV (China) and DWV (Argentina). Kashmir bee virus was absent from samples analysed for both countries.

Polyketides with different post-modifications from desert endophytic fungus Paraphoma sp

Three new polyketides 4,6,8-trihydroxy-5-methyl-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one (1), 5,7-dihydroxy-3-(1-hydroxyethyl)-3,4-dimethylisobenzofuran-1(3H)-one (2) and 1-(4-hydroxy-6-methoxy-1,7-dimethyl-3-oxo-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-1-yl) ethyl acetate (3) together with seven known analogues (4-10) were isolated from desert endophytic fungus Paraphoma sp. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by analysis of NMR data. The absolute configuration of (1-3) was established on the basis of CD experiments. The possible biosynthetic pathway of compounds (1-10) was suggested, which implied that these secondary metabolites might be originated from polyketide biosynthesis with different post-modification reactions. Compounds 2, and 5-8 were evaluated for bioactivities against plant pathogen A. solani, whereas none of them displayed any biological effects. In addition, compounds 1, 2 and 5-10 were also tested for cytotoxic activities against three human cancer cell lines (HepG2 cells, MCF-7 cells and Hela cells) without biological effects.

Extreme polyandry aids the establishment of invasive populations of a social insect

Although monandry is believed to have facilitated the evolution of eusociality, many highly eusocial insects have since evolved extreme polyandry. The transition to extreme polyandry was likely driven by the benefits of within-colony genetic variance to task specialization and/or disease resistance, but the extent to which it confers secondary benefits, once evolved, is unclear. Here we investigate the consequences of extreme polyandry on the invasive potential of the Asian honey bee, Apis cerana. In honey bees and other Hymenoptera, small newly founded invasive populations must overcome the genetic constraint of their sex determination system that requires heterozygosity at a sex-determining locus to produce viable females. We find A. cerana queens in an invasive population mate with an average of 27 males (range 16-42) that would result in the founding queen/s carrying 75% of their source population's sex alleles in stored sperm. This mating frequency is similar to native-range Chinese A. cerana (mean 29 males, range 19-46). Simulations reveal that extreme polyandry reduces the risk, relative to monandry or moderate polyandry, that colonies produce a high incidence of inviable brood in populations that have experienced a founder event, that is, when sex allele diversity is low and/or allele frequencies are unequal. Thus, extreme polyandry aids the invasiveness of A. cerana in two ways: (1) by increasing the sex locus allelic richness carried to new populations with each founder, thereby increasing sex locus heterozygosity; and (2) by reducing the population variance in colony fitness following a founder event.

Pain Levels after Local Anaesthetic with or without Hyaluronidase in Carpal Tunnel Release: A Randomised Controlled Trial

Purpose. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that temporarily liquefies the interstitial barrier, allowing easy dispersal of local anaesthetic through cleavage of tissue planes. This prospective, blinded, randomised controlled study investigates the utility of adding hyaluronidase to local anaesthetic in the setting of carpal tunnel release. Methods. 70 consecutive carpal tunnel release patients were recruited and randomised into a control group only receiving local anaesthetic and a hyaluronidase group receiving both hyaluronidase and local anaesthetic. Pain scores were rated using the visual analogue scale (VAS) by patients immediately after local anaesthetic injection and again immediately after the carpal tunnel release. Results. Preoperative VAS scores, taken after local anaesthetic injection, were greater than postoperative VAS scores. Postoperative VAS scores were significantly lower in the hyaluronidase group and tourniquet times were significantly shorter in the hyaluronidase group. Conclusion. Hyaluronidase addition to local anaesthetic in carpal tunnel release resulted in significant reductions in operative time and pain immediately after operation.
