Abstract
An asymmetric aza-BODIPY analogue bearing quinoxaline moiety was synthesized via a titanium tetrachloride-mediated Schiff-base-forming reaction of 6,7-dimethyl-1,4-dihydroquinoxaline-2,3-dione and benzo[d]thiazol-2-amine. This novel aza-BODIPY analogue forms a complementary hydrogen-bonded dimer due to the quinoxaline moiety in the crystal structure. It also shows intense absorption and fluorescence, with fluorescence quantum yields close to unity. The electrochemical measurements and the DFT calculations revealed the presence of the low-lying HOMO, which benefits their potential applications as an electron-transporting material.

Abstract
A series of diphenylboron-chelating N-substituent 8-aminoquinoline, 5-aminoquinoxaline, and 1-aminophenazine were prepared. They exhibit lowest energy absorption peaks of 444-766 nm, emission peaks of 563-820 nm, and quantum yields of up to 46.5%. Electrochemical and theoretical studies indicate that the N-substituent mainly determines the HOMO and the framework determines the LUMO, thus allowing for a wide-tuning of absorptions/emissions. Intramolecular charge transfer transition leads to large Stokes shifts of up to 166 nm. One selected compound showed satisfactory cytocompatibility and cytoplasm-targeting cell imaging ability.

Abstract
Given potential applications of multiphoton absorbers, in the present work we have studied the symmetry-relaxation effects in one- and two-photon absorption spectra in two bichromophore systems based on difluoroborate core linked by biphenylene or bianthracene moieties. We have employed a palette of experimental methods (synthesis, one- and two-photon spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography) and state-of-the-art computational methods to shed light on how symmetry relaxation, a result of twisting of building blocks, affects one- and two-photon absorption of the two studied fluorescent dyes. Electronic-structure calculations revealed that the planarity of central biphenyl moiety, as well as deviations from planarity up to 30-40 deg., ensure maximum values of two-photon transition strengths. Perpendicular arrangement of phenylene units in biphenylene moiety leads to 20% drop in the two-photon transition strengths. More detailed studies demonstrated that equilibrium structures of both compounds in chloroform solution show very different values of two-photon absorption cross sections at absorption band maxima, i.e. 224 GM for and 134 GM for biphenyle and bianthracene linkers, respectively. The latter value is in good agreement with experimental value obtained using Z-scan method. The difference in two-photon absorption cross section between both compounds can be rationalized based on equilibrium geometry differences, i.e. interplanar angle is 35 deg and 91 deg in the case of biphenylene and bianthracene moiety, respectively. It is thus not beneficial to introduce conformationally locked central linker based on bianthracene moiety.

Abstract
Redox-active unsaturated chelate ligands can be realised with different ring sizes of the resulting metallacycles. An overview is presented, starting from an exposition of non-innocent behaviour and chelate effects. A systematic approach is used to describe the most familiar situation, the metal complexes of 1,4-hetero-1,3-dienes in established forms (e.g. o-quinone, α-dithiolene, and α-diimine ligands) and with less common combinations of O, S, and N heteroatoms. The different steric and electronic conditions in six-membered chelate ring systems derived from the β-diketonate structure will be discussed with examples of substituted and π extended ligands, including 9-oxidophenalenyl, formazanate, and anions derived from indigo or 9,10-anthraquinone. Four-membered chelate rings existing in at least two ligand-based oxidation states are available through steric and electronic stabilisation in amidinate or triazenide complexes. Three-membered and seven-membered chelate ring situations are discussed briefly as further alternatives.

Abstract
We develop the chemistry of boron difluoride hydrazone dyes (BODIHYs) bearing two aryl substituents and explore their properties. The low-energy absorption bands (λmax =427-464 nm) of these dyes depend on the nature of the N-aryl groups appended to the BODIHY framework. Electron-donating and extended π-conjugated groups cause a redshift, whereas electron-withdrawing groups result in a blueshift. The title compounds were weakly photoluminescent in solution and strongly photoluminescent as thin films (λPL =525-578 nm) with quantum yields of up to 18 % and lifetimes of 1.1-1.7 ns, consistent with the dominant radiative decay through fluorescence. Addition of water to THF solutions of the BODIHYs studied causes molecular aggregation which restricts intramolecular motion and thereby enhances photoluminescence. The observed photoluminescence of BODIHY thin films is likely facilitated by a similar molecular packing effect. Finally, cyclic voltammetry studies confirmed that BODIHY derivatives bearing para-substituted N-aryl groups could be reversibly oxidized (Eox1 =0.62-1.02 V vs. Fc/Fc+ ) to their radical cation forms. Chemical oxidation studies confirmed that para-substituents at the N-aryl groups are required to circumvent radical decomposition pathways. Our findings provide new opportunities and guiding principles for the design of sought-after multifunctional boron difluoride complexes that are photoluminescent in the solid state.

Abstract
In the periodic table of elements, boron (B, atomic number, 5) and nitrogen (N, atomic number, 7) are neighboring to the carbon (C, atomic number, 6). Thus, the total electronic number of two carbons (12) is equal to the electronic sum of one boron (5) and one nitrogen (7). Accordingly, replacing two carbons with one boron and one nitrogen in a π-conjugated structure gives an isoelectronic system, i.e., the BN perturbed π-conjugated system, comparing to their all-carbon analogs. The BN embedded π-conjugated systems have unique properties, e.g., optical absorption, emission, energy levels, bandgaps, and packing order in contrast to their all-carbon analogs and have been intensively studied in terms of novel synthesis, photophysical characterizations, and electronic applications in recent years. In this review, we try to summarize the synthesis methods, optoelectronic properties, and progress in organic photovoltaic (OPV) applications of the representative BN embedded polycyclic π-conjugated systems. Firstly, the narrative will be commenced with a general introduction to the BN units, i.e., B←N coordination bond, B-N covalent bond, and N-B←N group. Then, the representative synthesis strategies toward π-conjugated systems containing B←N coordination bond, B-N covalent bond, and N-B←N group will be summarized. Afterwards, the frontier orbital energy levels, optical absorption, packing order in solid state, charge transportation ability, and photovoltaic performances of typical BN embedded π-conjugated systems will be discussed. Finally, a prospect will be proposed on the OPV materials of BN doped π-conjugated systems, especially their potential applications to the small molecules organic solar cells.

Abstract
Although boron-based fluorophores incorporating nitrogenous chelating ligands have received much attention, there has been little work on examples of boron-salphen and azine derivatives. In this report, we present several π expanded boron salphen type complexes, incorporating both bis(2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde)azine as well as ortho, meta and para variants of the analogous 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde salphen compounds. For the azine, we observed only the formation of a single BF2 adduct, while for the naphth-phen compounds dimeric BF2 binding was observed. All new compounds were fully characterized via X-ray diffraction, and both DFT and TDDFT studies were carried out to probe the electronic structures of these fluorophores.

Abstract
The two first examples of zwitterionic BODIPYs have been synthesized via a simple SN-Ar methodology. The molecules exhibit excellent optical behavior, such as a large Stokes shift in solution and therefore a very intense emission, and can thus avoid self-quenching. The zwitterionic nature of the molecules was unambiguously elucidated using single crystal XRD studies. The electronic conjugation was investigated by NMR, DFT (NICS (0)) and XRD analysis. Due to their inherent ionic nature, their enhanced solubility in aqueous conditions was exploited for their utility in bio-imaging and cell viability studies. These molecules demonstrate promising localization inside live yeast cells.

Abstract
A new family of pyridyl-enamido-based organoboron complexes (Borepy1–4) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties were developed. They show very weak fluorescence in low-viscosity organic solvents and exhibit intense fluorescence in high-viscosity solvents or in their aggregate/solid states. X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that the weak intermolecular interactions by fixing the molecular conformations of Borepy1–4 are responsible for intense fluorescence in the solid state. TD-DFT calculations show that the maximum absorption bands for Borepy1–4 can be easily tuned.

Abstract
We synthesized novel boron chelate complexes by the reaction of pyrazoline derivatives and boron trifluoride diethyl etherate followed by a new rearrangement. The structures of the compounds were characterized by IR, NMR and HRMS, especially, a typical compound 3c was confirmed by X-ray single crystal analysis. We proposed a mechanism of the rearrangement. Moreover, the absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of these compounds were measured.

Abstract
By changing benzo-fused position on pyridyl unit, three aza boron-pyridyl-isoindoline isomers, a new type of BODIPY analog, are synthesized through a facile two step reaction. These isomers show broad envelopes of intense vibrational bands in the absorption and emission spectra with moderate fluorescence quantum yields. In comparison to those of classical BODIPYs, significant fluorescence intensity are observed for these isomers in film and powder. An analysis of the structure-property relationships has been carried out based on X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy, and theoretical calculation.
