Abstract
This review comprehensively covers synthetic catalysts for the hydrolysis of biorelevant phosphates and pyrophosphates, which bridge between nanoarchitectonics and biology to construct their interdisciplinary hybrids. In the early 1980s, remarkable catalytic activity of Ce4+ ion for phosphate hydrolysis was found. More recently, this finding has been extended to Ce-based solid catalysts (CeO2 and Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)), which are directly compatible with nanoarchitectonics. Monoesters and triesters of phosphates, as well as pyrophosphates, were effectively cleaved by these catalysts. With the use of either CeO2 nanoparticles or elegantly designed Ce-based MOF, highly stable phosphodiester linkages were also hydrolyzed. On the surfaces of all these solid catalysts, Ce4+ and Ce3+ coexist and cooperate for the catalysis. The Ce4+ activates phosphate substrates as a strong acid, whereas the Ce3+ provides metal-bound hydroxide as an eminent nucleophile. Applications of these Ce-based catalysts to practical purposes are also discussed.

Abstract
Potentiometric speciation studies, mass spectrometry, and DFT calculations helped to predict the various structural possibilities of the dinuclear trivalent lanthanide ion (LnIII , Ln=La, Eu, Tb, Yb, Y) complexes of a novel macrocyclic ligand, m-ODO2A-dimer (H4 L), to correlate with their luminescence properties and the promoted BNPP and HPNP phosphodiester bond hydrolysis reaction rates. The stability constants of the dinuclear Ln2 (m-ODO2A-dimer) complexes and various hydrolytic species confirmed by mass spectrometry were determined. DFT calculations revealed that the Y2 LH-1 and the Y2 LH-2 species tended to form structures with the respective closed- and open-form conformations. Luminescence lifetime data for the heterodimetallic TbEuL system confirmed the fluorescence resonance energy transfer from the TbIII to EuIII ion. The internuclear distance RTbEu values were estimated to be in the range of 9.4-11.3 Å (pH 6.7-10.6), which were comparable to those of the DFT calculated open-form conformations. Multiple linear regression analysis of the kobs data was performed using the equation: kobs, corr. =kobs -kobs,OH =kLn2LHM->1 [Ln2 LH-1 ]+kLn2LH-2 [Ln2 LH-2 ] for the observed Ln2 L-promoted BNPP/HPNP hydrolysis reactions in solution pH from 7 to 10.5 (Ln=Eu, Yb). The results showed that the second-order rate constants for the Eu2 LH-2 and Yb2 LH-2 species were about 50-400 times more reactive than the structural analogous Zn2 (m-12 N3 O-dimer) system.

Abstract
The cyclization of the RNA model 2-hydroxypropyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate (HPNPP, 1) promoted by Zn2+ alone and the 1,5,9-triazacyclododecane complex of Zn2+ (Zn2+:[12]aneN3) is studied in ethanol in the presence of 0.5 equiv of -OEt/Zn2+ to investigate the effect of a low polarity/dielectric medium on a metal-catalyzed reaction of biological relevance. Ethanol exerts a medium effect that promotes strong binding of HPNPP to Zn2+, followed by a dimerization to form a catalytically active complex (HPNPP:Zn2+)2 in which the phosphate undergoes cyclization with a rate constant of kcat = 2.9 s(-1) at s(s)pH 7.1. In the presence of the triaza ligand:Zn2+ complex, the change from water to methanol and then to ethanol brings about a mechanism where two molecules of the complex, suggested as EtOH:Zn2+:[12]aneN3 and its basic form, EtO-:Zn2+:[12]aneN3, bind to HPNPP and catalyze its decomposition with a rate constant of kcat of 0.13 s(-1) at s(s)pH 7.1. Overall, the acceleration exhibited in these two situations is 4 x 10(14)-fold and 1.7 x 10(12)-fold relative to the background ethoxide-promoted reactions at the respective s(s)pH values. The implications of these findings are discussed within the context of the idea that enzymatic catalysis is enhanced by a reduced effective dielectric constant within the active site.

Abstract
The hydrolysis of cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate and 2'-deoxythymidylyl(3'-5')2'-deoxythymidine by Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6 was kinetically studied. The rate of hydrolysis was fairly proportional to the concentration of [Ce2(IV) (OH)4]4+ , showing that this is the catalytically active species. According to quantum-chemical calculation, the two Ce(IV) ions in this [Ce2(IV) (OH)4]4+ cluster are bridged by two OH residues. Upon the complex formation with H2 PO4- (a model compound for the phosphodiesters), these two Ce(IV) ions bind the two oxygen atoms of the substrate and enhance the electrophilicity of the phosphorus atom. The catalytic mechanism of Ce(IV)-induced hydrolysis of phosphodiesters has been proposed on the basis these results.

Abstract
Neutral aqueous solutions of cerium ammonium nitrate obtained by dilution of their acetonitrile stock solution with imidazole buffer show high catalytic activity in the hydrolysis of bis(p-nitrophenyl) phosphate (BNPP) and better reproducibility than other similar systems, but suffer from low stability. The kinetics of catalytic hydrolysis is second-order in Ce(IV), independent of pH in the range 5-8 and tentatively involves the Ce2(OH)7+ species as the active form. Attempts to stabilize the active species by different types of added ligands failed, but the use of Ce(IV) complexes pre-synthesized in an organic solvent with potentially stabilizing ligands as precursors of active hydroxo species appeared to be more successful. Three new Ce(IV) complexes, [Ce(Phen)2O(NO3)2], [Ce(tris)O(NO3)(OH)] and [Ce(BTP)2(NO3)4].2H2O (BTP = bis-tris propane, 1,3-bis[tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]propane), were prepared by reacting cerium ammonium nitrate with the respective ligands in acetonitrile and were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. Aqueous solutions of these complexes undergo rapid hydrolysis producing nearly neutral polynuclear Ce(IV) oxo/hydroxo species with high catalytic activity in BNPP hydrolysis. Potentiometric titrations of the solutions obtained from the complex with BTP revealed the formation of Ce4(OH)15+ species at pH > 7, which are protonated affording Ce4(OH)14(2+) and then Ce4(OH)13(3+) on a decrease in pH from 7 to 5. The catalytic activity increases strongly on going to species with a higher positive charge. The reaction mechanism involves first- and second-order in catalyst paths as well as intermediate complex formation with the substrate for higher charged species.

Abstract
The methanolyses of several organophosphate/phosphonate/phosphorothioate esters (O,O-diethyl O-(4-nitrophenyl) phosphate, paraoxon, ; O,O-diethyl S-(3,5-dichlorophenyl) phosphorothioate, ; O-ethyl O-(2-nitro-4-chlorophenyl) methylphosphonate, ; O,O-dimethyl O-(3-methyl-4-nitrophenyl) phosphorothioate, fenitrothion, ; O-ethyl S-(3,5-dichlorophenyl) methylphosphonothioate ) and a carboxylate ester (p-nitrophenyl acetate, ) catalyzed by methoxide and the Zn(2+)((-)OCH(3)) complex of 1,5,9-triazacyclododecane ( : Zn(2+)((-)OCH(3))) were studied in methanol and d(1)-methanol at 25 degrees C. In the case of the methoxide reactions inverse skie's were observed for the series with values ranging from 2 to 1.1, except for where the k(D)/k(H) = 0.90 +/- 0.02. The inverse k(D)/k(H) values are consistent with a direct nucleophilic methoxide attack involving desolvation of the nucleophile with varying extents of resolvation of the TS. With the : Zn(2+)((-)OCH(3)) complex all the skie values are k(D)/k(H) = 1.0 +/- 0.1 except for where the value is 0.79 +/- 0.06. Arguments are presented that the fractionation factors associated with complex : Zn(2+)((-)OCH(3)) are indistinguishable from unity. The skie's for all the complex-catalyzed methanolyses are interpreted as being consistent with an intramolecular nucleophilic attack of the Zn(2+)-coordinated methoxide within a pre-equilibrium metal : substrate complex.

Abstract
The methanolysis of hydroxypropyl-p-nitrophenyl phosphate (HPNPP, 1) promoted by La(OTf)(3) under buffered conditions was studied in methanol as a function of pH at 25 degrees C. (31)P NMR studies at -90 degrees C indicate that there are at least three La/1 complexes formed at pH approximately 5.3 of 1:1, 2:2, and 1:2 stoichiometry. Kinetic studies of the observed pseudo-first-order rate constants for the methanolysis of 1 as a function of [La(3+)] at 4.5 < pH < 10.5 indicate there are two general pH regimes. In the low pH regime between 4.5 and 7.6, the plots of k(obs) versus [La(3+)] exhibit saturation behavior with very strong 1:1 binding, with a plateau rate constant that depends on [OCH(3)(-)]. The catalytically productive species is shown to be a 2:2 complex of La(3+) and 1, where the phosphate is proposed to be doubly activated, thereby promoting the methoxide reaction by some 4.6 x 10(10)-fold. In the high pH regime from 7.9 to 10.5, 1:1, 2:2, and 2:1 La(3+)/1 complexes are formed with the La(3+) coordinated in the form of [La(3+)(OCH(3)(-))](1,2). Throughout this pH regime at high [La(3+)], a saturation complex, (La(3+)OCH(3)(-))(2)/1, is formed that spontaneously decomposes with a rate constant of (5-10) x 10(-)(3) s(-)(1), leading to an acceleration of 10(9)-fold at pH 8.0.

Abstract
The Ce(IV)-induced hydrolyses of DNA are kinetically investigated. The formation constants of the Ce(IV)-DNA complexes are in the following order: the single-stranded DNA > the double-stranded DNA >> the dinucleotide. On the other hand, the catalytic rate constants for the single-stranded DNA and the double-stranded DNA are comparable with each other, but both of them are much smaller than the value for the dinucleotide hydrolysis.
