Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of liquid salts with characteristics such as a low melting point, an ionic nature, non-volatility, and tunable properties. Because of their adaptability, they have a significant influence in the field of fluorescence. This paper reviews the primary literature on the use of ILs in fluorescence sensing technologies. The kind of target material is utilized to classify the fluorescence sensors made with the use of ILs. They include using ILs as probes for metals, nitro explosives, small organic compounds, anions, and gases. The efficacy of an IL-based fluorescence sensor depends on the precise design to guarantee specificity, sensitivity, and a consistent reaction to the desired analyte. The precise method can differ depending on the chemical properties of the IL, the choice of fluorophore, and the interactions with the analyte. Overall, the viability of the aforementioned materials for chemical analysis is evaluated, and prospective possibilities for further development are identified.

Abstract
Dithienylethenes are a type of diarylethene and they constitute one of the most widely studied classes of photoswitch, yet there have been no systematic studies of how electron-donor or -acceptor substituents affect their properties. Here we report eight dithienylethenes bearing push-push, pull-pull and push-pull substitution patterns with different lengths of conjugation in the backbone and investigate their photophysical and photochemical properties. Donor-acceptor interactions in the closed forms of push-pull dithienylethenes shift their absorption spectra into the near-infrared region (λmax ≈ 800 nm). The push-pull systems also exhibit low quantum yields for photochemical electrocyclization, and computational studies indicate that this can be attributed to stabilization of the parallel, rather than anti-parallel, conformations. The pull-pull systems have the highest quantum yields for switching in both directions, ring-closure and ring-opening. The chloride salt of a pull-pull DTE, with alkynes on both arms, is the first water-soluble dithienylethene that can achieve >95% photostationary state distribution in both directions with visible light. It has excellent fatigue resistance: in aqueous solution on irradiation at 365 nm, the photochemical quantum yields for switching and decomposition are 0.15 and 2.6 × 10-5 respectively, i.e. decomposition is more than 5000 times slower than photoswitching. These properties make it a promising candidate for biological applications such as super-resolution microscopy and photopharmacology.

Abstract
Exploring novel dithienylethenes (DTEs) with efficient photochromism has drawn increasing attention in virtue of the potential applications for photoelectric functional materials. In this contribution, we presented two novel acceptor-acceptor (A-A) type DTE derivatives (4a and 4b) by incorporating the diestervinyl moieties with strong electron-withdrawing capacity into two sides of DTE skeleton. The corresponding structures were well confirmed by the NMR (1H and 13C) and HRMS. When irradiated alternately with ultraviolet and visible light, 4a and 4b showed efficient photochromism in toluene, chloroform and DMSO, clearly implying a solvent-dependence feature. Moreover, excellent photoswitching behaviors were also observed in the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that strong Acceptor-Acceptor effect plays a dominative role in the efficient photochromic performance. Hence, this study will provide a useful guidance for developing high-performance DTE derivatives in multi-media.

Abstract
A dilactosyl-dicyanovinyl-functionalized tetraphenylethene (TPELC) was designed, synthesized and used for ratiometric sensing of cyanide. TPELC was comprised of three moieties (tetraphenylethylene, dicyanovinyl group and lactose unit) in one molecule, making TPELC water-soluble and aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active and selectively reactive to cyanide. Compared with other reported fluorescent probes containing dicyanovinyl group, TPELC is the first AIE luminogen to be assembled as fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) for sensing of cyanide in water without the use of surfactant or the help of organic solvents based on the nucleophilic addition reaction. The detection mechanism was verified by liquid chromatograph mass spectrometry experiments and by protonation of cyanide to reduce the nucleophilicity of cyanide. In addition, TPELC was used for detection of the cyanide content of food samples and test strips were developed to simplify the detection procedure.

Abstract
Colorimetric sensors have attracted wide scope of attentions due to its fascinating advantages, like handy, equipment-free and naked eye detections. In this investigation, a new and novel hydrazone based dual-responsive ratiometric/colorimetric chemosensor have been developed for highly selective and sensitive detection of Cu2+ and F- ions in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent. The probe showed highly selective sensing towards Cu2+ and F- ions by exhibiting a color change from pale yellow to yellowish green and pale yellow to yellowish brown respectively., in DMSO without any interference of other ions at same concentration. These experimental results have also substantiated by the NMR, HR-MS, UV-Vis spectroscopic, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry techniques and DFT calculations. The detection limits are found to be 5.8 μM for Cu2+ and 0.025 μM for F- ions which is far below to the values recommended by WHO. The stoichiometric ratios between NAPCBH and Cu2+/ F- ions were confirmed from the Job's plots and 1H NMR titration experiments which are found to be 2:1 and 1:1 respectively. The tracking ability of the DNA with NAPCBH-Cu2+ was studied by UV-Vis titration and Cyclic voltammetry measurements. It shows efficient affinity towards DNA with NAPCBH-Cu2+. The probe can also quantitatively determine the Copper and fluoride ions present in environmental samples & toothpaste. The NAPCBH was promptly recovered by utilizing very low concentration of HCl, showing that was found feasible and re-usable sensor for the convenient detection of Cu2+ and F- ions. Abstract
A new-synthesized diarylethene with near-infrared fluorochrome unit exhibited excellent photochromism under the irradiation of UV light (297 nm) and visible light (λ > 500 nm). When Cu2+ was added to the diarylethene solution, a fluorescent emission band centered at 736 nm appeared, indicating that the emission peak wavelength of compound is in near-infrared region. According to data of NMR, MS and other experiments, the complex ratio of the target compound to Cu2+ was 1:1 in the CH3CN-H2O solution (v/v = 9:1) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.10 μM. Furthermore, a logic circuit was constructed with four input signals (ultraviolet stimulus, visible light stimulus, Cu2+ and EDTA) and one output signal (fluorescent intensity at 736 nm).

Abstract
Two novel donor–π–acceptor-type dithienylethene derivatives, in which the triphenylamine group acts as electron donor and the formyl group functions as electron acceptor, have been developed. Their structures were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS (ESI). Investigation of their photochromic properties indicated that they had good photochromic behaviour and excellent fatigue resistance on irradiation with UV or visible light. DFT calculations further validated these experimental results for photochromic behaviour. Moreover, these compounds can be utilised as versatile building blocks to construct novel near-infrared photochromic materials.

Abstract
We synthesized a coumarin-spiropyran dyad with a hydrogenated pyran moiety (2), behaving as an off-on type fluorescent receptor for rapid, selective, and sensitive detection of cyanide anion (CN(-)) in aqueous media. The receptor itself shows almost no fluorescence with a quantum yield < 0.01, due to the delocalization of π-electrons over the molecule. Selective nucleophilic addition of CN(-) to the spirocarbon of the molecule rapidly promotes spirocycle opening within only 3 min. This leads to localization of π-electrons on the coumarin moiety and exhibits strong light-blue fluorescence at 459 nm with very high quantum yield (0.52). As a result of this, the receptor facilitates rapid, selective, and sensitive fluorometric detection of CN(-) as low as 1.0 μM.

Abstract
A new highly selective colorimetric chemosensor 1 (E)-9-(((5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-pyrido[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-8-ol was designed and synthesized for the sequential detection of Cu(2+) and CN(-). This sensor 1 exhibited an obvious color change from yellow to orange in the presence of Cu(2+) in a fully aqueous solution. The detection limit (0.9 μM) of 1 for Cu(2+) is far lower than the WHO limit (31.5 μM) for drinking water. In addition, the resulting Cu(2+)-2· 1 complex can be further used to detect toxic cyanide through a color change from orange to yellow, indicating the recovery of 1 from Cu(2+)-2·1. Importantly, chemosensor 1 could be used to detect and quantify Cu(2+) in water samples, and a colorimetric test strip of 1 for the detection of Cu(2+) could be useful for all practical purposes.

Abstract
The potential implication of photochromic materials with absorption and reactivity in the near-infrared region is far-reaching. In this work, three novel bisindole-containing diarylethene derivatives 1o–3o have been successfully synthesized and their photochromic behaviour exhibits a strong bathochromic shift effect compared with bisbenzothiophene diarylethene 4o. These new bisindole-diarylethene compounds 1o–3o are highly sensitive to photo-stimuli both in solution and in poly(methyl methacrylate) films. Besides, 1o–3o exhibit an excellent reversible fluorescence switching behavior modulated by optical stimuli.

Abstract
Three unsymmetrical diarylethenes with both thiophene and benzene moieties were synthesized. Their crystal structures and photochromic features were investigated systematically to elucidate the substituent effects of the terminal phenyl group on photochromism. Computational studies were performed to provide further insight into their frontier molecular orbitals and spatial distributions of electronic density. Each compound exhibited favorable photochromism in hexane and functioned as notable fluorescent photo-switches with fluorescence quenching efficiency of ∼96% induced by the intensity change of UV/vis light. Among the three diarylethenes, the cyano group on the terminal phenyl group significantly decreased the distance of the two reactive carbon atoms and strengthened the intermolecular hydrogen bond stacking interactions, resulting in improved stability in crystal state. Furthermore, it exhibited a red-shifted absorption maximum, an enhanced molar absorption coefficient, cyclization quantum yield, and fluorescence quantum yield in solution.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of two indolium probes 1 and 2 based on anthracene and pyrene derivatives and their interactions with various anions. Of these probes, the pyrene conjugate 2 acts as a dual colorimetric and fluorescent chemodosimeter for the selective and sensitive detection of cyanide ions. The detection limit of probe 2 for CN(-) ions was found to be 10 ppb (30 nM). The nature of interaction has been thoroughly studied through various techniques such as (1)H NMR and IR spectroscopy, HRMS, and isothermal calorimetric (ITC) studies. These studies confirm that probe 2 forms a 1,2-adduct in the presence of CN(-) ions. Kinetic studies using probe 2 showed the completion of the reaction within 15 s with a rate constant of k' = 0.522±0.063 s(-1). This probe can be coated on a solid surface (dipstick) and a polymer matrix for the on-site analysis and quantification of endogenous cyanide ions in natural sources such as Indian almonds.

Abstract
Two new dicyanovinyl (DCV) functionalized triarylboranes (Mes2B-π-spacer-DCV, for 1: π-spacer = C6H4, for 2: π-spacer = 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-phenyl) are reported. The molecular structures of 1 and 2 are similar except for the spacer which connects the boryl and DCV units. This small structural perturbation induces drastic changes in the optical properties of 1 and 2. Compound 2 shows weak dual fluorescence emission in nonpolar solvents and a stronger emission in polar solvents. Compound 1 is weakly fluorescent in polar environments but shows an intense single luminescence peak in less polar environments. Compound 1 exhibits a turn-off fluorescence response for both fluoride and cyanide: in contrast, 2 shows a turn on fluorescence response for both anions with different fluorescence signatures. The NMR titration studies reveal that for compound 2, fluoride binds to the boron centre and cyanide binds to the DCV unit. For compound 1, the fluoride ion binds to the boron center, whereas the CN(-) binds to both the Ar3B and DCV units.

Abstract
Three new 4-hydroxy aurone compounds 1-3 with dimethylamino (1), bromine (2) and cyano (3) as terminal group have been synthesized. Their photophysical properties as well as recognition properties for cyanide anions in acetonitrile and aqueous solution have also been examined. These compounds exhibit remarkable response to cyanide anions with obvious color and fluorescence change owing to hydrogen bonding reaction between cyanide anions and the O-H moiety of the sensors, which allows naked eye detection of cyanide anions.
