Novel ternary AgIICoIIIF5 fluoride: synthesis, structure and magnetic characteristics

We present a new compound in the silver-cobalt-fluoride system, featuring paramagnetic silver (d9) and high-spin cobalt (d6), synthesized by solid-state method in an autoclave under F2 overpressure. Based on powder X-ray diffraction, we determined that AgIICoIIIF5 crystallizes in a monoclinic system with space group C2/c. The calculated fundamental band-gap falls in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the compound has the character of charge-transfer insulator. AgCoF5 is likely a ferrimagnet with one predominant superexchange magnetic interaction constant between mixed spin cations (Ag-Co) of -62 meV (SCAN result). Magnetometric measurements conducted on a powdered sample allowed the identification of a transition at 128 K, which could indicate magnetic ordering.

Ag(II) as Spin Super-Polarizer in Molecular Spin Clusters

Using quantum mechanical calculations, we examine magnetic (super)exchange interactions in hypothetical, chemically reasonable molecular coordination clusters containing fluoride-bridged late transition metals or selected lanthanides, as well as Ag(II). By referencing to analogous species comprising closed-shell Cd(II), we provide theoretical evidence that the presence of Ag(II) may modify the magnetic properties of such systems (including metal-metal superexchange) to a surprising degree, specifically both coupling sign and strength may markedly change. Remarkably, this happens in spite of the fact that the fluoride ligand is the least susceptible to spin polarization among all monoatomic ligands known in chemistry. In an extreme case of an oxo-bridged Ni(II)₂ complex, the presence of Ag(II) leads to a nearly 17-fold increase of magnetic superexchange and switching from antiferro (AFM)- to ferromagnetic (FM) coupling. Ag(II)─with one hole in its d shell that may be shared with or transferred to ligands─effectively acts as spin super-polarizer, and this feature could be exploited in spintronics and diverse molecular devices.

Structural Phase Transitions and Magnetic Superexchange in MI AgII F3 Perovskites at High Pressure

Pressure-induced phase transitions of MI AgII F3 perovskites (M=K, Rb, Cs) have been predicted theoretically for the first time for pressures up to 100 GPa. The sequence of phase transitions for M=K and Rb consists of a transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic and back to orthorhombic, associated with progressive bending of infinite chains of corner-sharing [AgF6 ]4- octahedra and their mutual approach through secondary Ag⋅⋅⋅F contacts. In stark contrast, only a single phase transition (tetragonal→triclinic) is predicted for CsAgF3 ; this is associated with substantial deformation of the Jahn-Teller-distorted first coordination sphere of AgII and association of the infinite [AgF6 ]4- chains into a polymeric sublattice. The phase transitions markedly decrease the coupling strength of intra-chain antiferromagnetic superexchange in MAgF3 hosts lattices.

Phase Transitions and Amorphization of M2AgF4 (M = Na, K, Rb) Compounds at High Pressure

We report the results of high-pressure Raman spectroscopy studies of alkali metal fluoroargentates (M2AgF4, where M = Na, K, Rb) combined with theoretical and X-ray diffraction studies for the K member of the series. Theoretical density functional calculations predict two structural phase transitions for K2AgF4: one from low-pressure monoclinic P21/c (beta) phase to intermediate-pressure tetragonal I42d structure at 6 GPa, and another to high-pressure triclinic P1 phase at 58 GPa. However, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction data indicate that both polymorphic forms of K2AgF4, as well as two other fluoroargentate phases studied here, undergo amorphization at pressures as low as several GPa.

Crystal structure, lattice dynamics and superexchange in MAgF3 1D antiferromagnets (M = K, Rb, Cs) and a Rb3Ag2F7 Ruddlesden–Popper phase

With the use of lattice dynamics calculation within the hybrid HSE06 framework we were able to understand the vibrational spectra of MAgF3 (M = K, Rb, Cs) compounds.

The fate of compound with AgF2:AgO stoichiometry-A theoretical study

Metal oxyfluorides constitute a broad group of chemical compounds with a rich spectrum of crystal structures and properties. Surprisingly though, none of the ternary oxyfluorides contains a cation from group 11 of the periodic table. Intending to find one, we focused on the silver derivative, the Ag₂OF₂ system, which may be considered as the 1:1 "adduct" of AgF₂ (i.e., an antiferromagnetic positive U charge transfer insulator) and AgO (i.e., a diamagnetic disproportionated negative charge transfer insulator). Here, possible crystal structures of the silver oxyfluoride were studied using evolutionary algorithms based on the density functional theory approach. We analyzed the oxidation states of silver in the low-energy structures, possible magnetic interactions, and energetic stability with respect to the available substrates. Our findings suggest that silver oxyfluoride, if obtained, may form a metastable crystal with cations in three different oxidation states of the same element. Due to the small energy difference, existence of a fully disproportionated metallic compound cannot be ruled out. Finally, we outlined a prospect for the synthesis of polytypes of interest using diverse synthetic approaches, starting from the direct fluorination of Ag₂O.

Lattice Dynamics of KAgF3 Perovskite, Unique 1D Antiferromagnet

Theoretical DFT calculations using GGA+U and HSE06 frameworks enabled vibrational mode assignment and partial (atomic) phonon DOS determination in KAgF3 perovskite, a low-dimensional magnetic fluoroargentate(II). Twelve bands in the spectra of KAgF3 were assigned to either IR active or Raman active modes, reaching excellent correlation with experimental values (R2 > 0.997). Low-temperature Raman measurements indicate that the intriguing spin-Peierls-like phase transition at 230 K is an order–disorder transition and it does not strongly impact the vibrational structure of the material.

Silver route to cuprate analogs

The parent compound of high-[Formula: see text] superconducting cuprates is a unique Mott insulator consisting of layers of spin-[Formula: see text] ions forming a square lattice and with a record high in-plane antiferromagnetic coupling. Compounds with similar characteristics have long been searched for without success. Here, we use a combination of experimental and theoretical tools to show that commercial [Formula: see text] is an excellent cuprate analog with remarkably similar electronic parameters to [Formula: see text] but larger buckling of planes. Two-magnon Raman scattering and inelastic neutron scattering reveal a superexchange constant reaching 70% of that of a typical cuprate. We argue that structures that reduce or eliminate the buckling of the [Formula: see text] planes could have an antiferromagnetic coupling that matches or surpasses the cuprates.

Crystal, electronic, and magnetic structures of M2AgF4 (M = Na–Cs) phases as viewed from the DFT+U method

Theoretical analysis of various polymorphic forms of a series of four alkali metal fluoroargentates(ii), M₂AgF₄ (M = Na–Cs), helped to establish clear trends of crystal structures and magnetic properties across the alkali metal series.

AgPO2F2 and Ag9(PO2F2)14: the first Ag(i) and Ag(i)/Ag(ii) difluorophosphates with complex crystal structures

The reaction of AgF2 with P2O3F4 yields a mixed valence Ag(I)/Ag(II) difluorophosphate salt with AgAg(PO2F2)14 stoichiometry - the first Ag(ii)-PO2F2 system known. This highly moisture sensitive brown solid is thermally stable up to 120 °C, which points at further feasible extension of the chemistry of Ag(ii)-PO2F2 systems. The crystal structure shows a very complex bonding pattern, comprising of polymeric Ag(PO2F2)14(4-) anions and two types of Ag(I) cations. One particular Ag(II) site present in the crystal structure of Ag9(PO2F2)14 is the first known example of square pyramidal penta-coordinated Ag(ii) in an oxo-ligand environment. Ag(i)PO2F2 - the product of the thermal decomposition of Ag9(PO2F2)14 - has also been characterized by thermal analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. It has a complicated crystal structure as well, which consists of infinite 1D [Ag(I)O4/2] chains which are linked to more complex 3D structures via OPO bridges. The PO2F2(-) anions bind to cations in both compounds as bidentate oxo-ligands. The terminal F atoms tend to point inside the van der Waals cavities in the crystal structure of both compounds. All important structural details of both title compounds were corroborated by DFT calculations.

Electronic Properties of Fluoride and Half-fluoride Superlattices KZnF3/KAgF3 and SrTiO3/KAgF3

We present the formation of cupratelike electronic structures in KAgF3-related superlattices resulted from the confinement together with structural chemical modification by using the generalized gradient approximation augmented with maximally localized Wannier functions analysis. Strong antiferromagnetic coupling found in bulk KAgF3 is held in purely-fluoride KZnF3/KAgF3. Under 4% in-plane compression strain, its Fermi surface shape breaks away from the edge of electron pocket and resembles that of La2CuO4. While within half-fluoride SrTiO3/KAgF3, out-of-plane electronic reconstruction results in electron doping of AgF2 plane and antiferromagnetic state instability, and the Fermi surface shape presents considerable similarity to that in HgBaCuO4. These results shed light on two dimensional antiferromagnetic precursors of a new Ag(II) family of high-temperature superconductors.

Chemistry of silver(II): a cornucopia of peculiarities†

Silver is the heavier congener of copper in the Periodic Table, but the chemistry of these two elements is very different. While Cu(II) is the most common cationic form of copper, Ag(II) is rare and its compounds exhibit a broad range of peculiar physico-chemical properties. These include, but are not limited to: (i) uncommon oxidizing properties, (ii) unprecedented large mixing of metal and ligand valence orbitals, (iii) strong spin-polarization of neighbouring ligands, (iv) record large magnetic superexchange constants, (v) ease of thermal decomposition of its salts with O-, N- or C-ligands, as well as (vi) robust Jahn-Teller effect which is preserved even at high pressure. These intriguing features of the compounds of Ag(II) will be discussed here together with (vii) a possibility of electromerism (electronic tautomerism) for a certain class of Ag(II) salts.
