Abstract
Planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophanes consist of two functionalized benzene rings connected by two ethylene bridges. These organic compounds have a wide range of applications in asymmetric synthesis, as both ligands and catalysts, and in materials science, as polymers, energy materials and dyes. However, these molecules can only be accessed by enantiomer separation via (a) time-consuming chiral separations and (b) kinetic resolution approaches, often with a limited substrate scope, yielding both enantiomers. Here, we report a simple, efficient, metal-free protocol for organocatalytic desymmetrization of prochiral diformyl[2.2]paracyclophanes. Our detailed experimental mechanistic study highlights differences in the origin of enantiocontrol of pseudo-para and pseudo-gem diformyl derivatives in NHC catalyzed desymmetrizations based on whether a key Breslow intermediate is irreversibly or reversibly formed in this process. This gram-scale reaction enables a wide range of follow-up derivatizations of carbonyl groups, producing various enantiomerically pure planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives, thereby underscoring the potential of this method.

Abstract
An unprecedented dearomatization of [2.2]paracyclophane-derived cyclic N-sulfonylimines was conducted through cyclopropanation with sulfur ylides, giving a series of dearomative cyclopropanes with good yields. DFT calculations suggested that the dearomatization was attributed to the relatively weak aromaticity of [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives that resulted from the effect of the unique [2.2]paracyclophane skeleton and the electron-withdrawing N-sulfonyl group. Some downstream elaborations of the products were demonstrated.

Abstract
Planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives are a type of structurally intriguing and practically useful chiral molecules, which have found a range of important applications in the field of asymmetric catalysis and material science. However, access to enantioenriched [2.2]paracyclophanes represents a longstanding challenge in organic synthesis due to their unique structures, which are still highly dependent on the chiral chromatography separation technique and classical chemical resolution strategy to date. In this work, we report on an efficient and versatile kinetic resolution protocol for various substituted amido[2.2]paracyclophanes, including those with pseudo-geminal, pseudo-ortho, pseudo-meta and pseudo-para disubstitutions, using chiral phosphoric acid (CPA)-catalyzed asymmetric amination reaction, which was also applicable to the enantioselective desymmetrization of an achiral diamido[2.2]paracyclophane. Detailed experimental studies shed light on a new reaction mechanism for the electrophilic aromatic C-H amination, which proceeded through sequential triazane formation and N[1,5]-rearrangement. The facile large-scale kinetic resolution reaction and diverse derivatizations of both the recovered chiral starting materials and the C-H amination products showcased the potential of this method.

Abstract
This short review focuses on enantiopure planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophanes (pCps), a fascinating class of molecules that possess an unusual three-dimensional core and intriguing physicochemical properties. In the first part of the review, different synthetic strategies for preparing optically active pCps are described. Although classical resolution methods based on the synthesis and separation of diastereoisomeric products still dominate the field, recent advances involving the kinetic resolution of racemic compounds and the desymmetrization of meso derivatives open up new possibilities to access enantiopure key intermediates on synthetically useful scales. Due to their advantageous properties including high configurational and chemical stability, [2.2]paracyclophanes are increasingly employed in various research fields, ranging from stereoselective synthesis to material sciences. The applications of [2.2]paracyclophanes in asymmetric organocatalysis are described in the second part of the review. While historically enantiopure pCps have been mainly employed by organic chemists as chiral ligands in transition-metal catalysis, these compounds can also be used as efficient catalysts in metal-free reactions and may inspire the development of new transformations in the near future.

Abstract
For almost 20 years, thioureas have been experiencing a renaissance of interest with the emerged development of asymmetric organocatalysts. Due to their relatively high acidity and strong hydrogen bond donor capability, they differ significantly from ureas and offer, appropriately modified, great potential as organocatalysts, chelators, drug candidates, etc. The review focuses on the family of chiral thioureas, presenting an overview of the current state of knowledge on their synthesis and selected applications in stereoselective synthesis and drug development.

Abstract
For seeking high enantiopurity, the previously reported thermal asymmetric catalysis is usually carried out at low temperature sometimes with limited yield, that is, the high enantiomeric excess (ee) usually at the cost of high yield. Thus, the achieving both high stereoselectivity and yield is an enormous challenge. We report herein two metal nanoparticle (M NP)-loaded and porphyrin-containing homochiral covalent organic framework (CCOF)-based composite catalysts, and their application in the thermally-driven asymmetric one-pot Henry and A3-coupling reactions. All the reactions are conducted at elevated temperatures with both excellent stereoselectivity and yield which resulted from the synergy of CCOF confinement effect and M NP catalytic activation. Notably, the needed thermal energy for the asymmetric reactions herein is derived from the photothermal conversion via porphyrin-based CCOF upon irradiation with visible light. Remarkably, the CCOF confinement effect can be effectively maintained up to 100 °C for the asymmetric one-pot Henry and A3-coupling reactions herein. Achieving both high stereoselectivity and yield is a challenge for conventional asymmetric catalysis. Here, the authors report two metal nanoparticle-loaded and porphyrin-containing homochiral covalent organic framework-based composite catalysts that exhibit high stereoselectivity and yield in the thermally-driven asymmetric reactions.

Abstract
The aroylhydrazone Schiff bases 2-hydroxy-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide and (2,3-dihydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide have been used to synthesize the bi- and tri-nuclear Ni(II) complexes [Ni2(L1)2(MeOH)4] (1) and [Ni3(HL2)2(CH3OH)8]· (NO3)2 (2). Both complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic techniques [IR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS)], and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The coordination behavior of the two ligands is different in the complexes: The ligand exhibits the keto form in 2, while coordination through enol form was found in 1. Herein, the catalytic activity of 1 and 2 has been compared with the nitroaldol condensation reaction under various conditions. Complex 2 exhibits the highest activity towards solvent-free conditions.

Abstract
Advanced multidimensional NMR techniques have been employed to investigate the intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) in a series of N,N′-([1,1′-binaphthalene]-2,2′-diyl)bis(benzamide) derivatives, with the site-specific substitution of different functional groups. The existence of intramolecular HBs and the elimination of any molecular aggregation and possible intermolecular HBs are ascertained by various experimental NMR techniques, including solvent polarity dependent modifications of HB strengths. In the fluorine substituted derivative, direct evidence for the engagement of organic fluorine in HB is obtained by the detection of heteronuclear through-space correlation and the coupling between two NMR active nuclei where the transmission of spin polarization is mediated through HBs (1hJFH). The extent of reduction in the strength of 1hJFH on dilution with high polarity solvents directly provided the qualitative measure of HB strength. The HB, although becoming weakened, does not get nullified even in pure high polarity solvent, which is attributed to the structural constraints. The rate of exchange of a labile hydrogen atom with the deuterium of the solvent permitted the measurement of their half-lives, that are correlated to the relative strengths of HBs. The experimental NMR findings are further validated by XRD and DFT-based theoretical computations, such as, NCI and QTAIM. NMR studies reveal very strong hydrogen bond unbreakable even in high polarity solvents.![]()

Abstract

Pd-catalyzed
cross-coupling reactions that form C–N bonds
have become useful methods to synthesize anilines and aniline derivatives,
an important class of compounds throughout chemical research. A key
factor in the widespread adoption of these methods has been the continued
development of reliable and versatile catalysts that function under
operationally simple, user-friendly conditions. This review provides
an overview of Pd-catalyzed N-arylation reactions found in both basic
and applied chemical research from 2008 to the present. Selected examples
of C–N cross-coupling reactions between nine classes of nitrogen-based
coupling partners and (pseudo)aryl halides are described for the synthesis
of heterocycles, medicinally relevant compounds, natural products,
organic materials, and catalysts.

Abstract
The role of cooperative effects arising from noncovalent attractive interactions as a vital factor governing stereoinduction in chiral H-bond catalyzed aza-Henry reactions is reported. Supporting this finding were density functional theory (DFT) calculations which revealed a shape and size dependency existed between the catalyst and substrates that when matched lead to high enantioselectivity, as reflected by favorable activation parameters. Associated with optimal catalyst and substrate pairing were a closed catalytic binding pocket and a synclinal orientation of the substrates that reinforced favorable stereoelectronic effects and dispersive type forces. Meanwhile, unfavorable steric interactions were found to be a dominant effect controlling diastereoselection.
