Construction of olefinic coordination polymer single crystal platforms: precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms and beyond

Olefin [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions based on coordination-bond templates provide numerous advantages for the selective synthesis of cyclobutane compounds. This review outlines the recent advances in the design and construction of single crystal platforms of olefinic coordination polymers for precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms, and possible developments as comprehensively as possible. Numerous examples are presented to illustrate how the arrangements of the olefin pairs influence the solid-state photoreactivity and examine the types of cyclobutane products. Furthermore, the photocycloaddition reaction mechanisms are investigated by combining advanced techniques such as single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, laser scanning confocal microscopy and theoretical calculations. Finally, potential applications resulting from promising physicochemical properties before and after photoreactions are discussed, and existing challenges and possible solutions are also proposed.

Chemo- and Stereoselective Intermolecular [2+2] Photocycloaddition of Conjugated Dienes using Colloidal Nanocrystal Photocatalysts

The use of visible-light photosensitizers to power [2+2] photocycloadditions that produce complex tetrasubstituted cyclobutanes is a true success of photochemistry, but the scope of this reaction has been limited to activated α, β-unsaturated carbonyls. This paper describes selective intermolecular homo- and hetero-[2+2] photocycloadditions of terminal and internal aryl conjugated dienes - substrates historically unsuited for this reaction because of their multiple possible reaction pathways and product configurations - through triplet-triplet energy transfer from CdSe nanocrystal photocatalysts, to generate valuable and elusive syn-trans aryl vinylcyclobutanes. The negligible singlet-triplet splitting of nanocrystals' excited states allows them to drive the [2+2] pathway over the competing [4+2] photoredox pathway, a chemoselectivity not achievable with any known molecular photosensitizer. Reversible tethering of the cyclobutane product to the nanocrystal surface results in near quantitative yield of the syn-trans product. Flat colloidal CdSe nanoplatelets produce cyclobutanes coupled at the terminal alkenes of component dienes with up to 89% regioselectivity.

Fluorocarbon-Functionalized Superhydrophobic Metal-Organic Framework: Enhanced CO2 Uptake via Photoinduced Postsynthetic Modification

The design and synthesis of porous materials for selective capture of CO₂ in the presence of water vapor is of paramount importance in the context of practical separation of CO₂ from the flue gas stream. Here, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of a photoresponsive fluorinated MOF {[Cd(bpee)(hfbba)]·EtOH}_n (1) constructed by using 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)bis(benzoic acid) (hfbba), Cd(NO₃)₂, and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpee) as building units. Due to the presence of the fluoroalkyl -CF₃ functionality, compound 1 exhibits superhydrophobicity, which is validated by both water vapor adsorption and contact angle measurements (152°). The parallel arrangement of the bpee linkers makes compound 1 a photoresponsive material that transforms to {[Cd₂(rctt-tpcb)(hfbba)₂]·2EtOH}_n (rctt-tpcb = regio cis,trans,trans-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)cyclobutane; 1IR) after a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. The photomodified framework 1IR exhibits increased uptake of CO₂ in comparison to 1 under ambient conditions due to alteration of the pore surface that leads to additional weak electron donor-acceptor interactions with the -CF₃ groups, as examined through periodic density functional theory calculations. The enhanced uptake is also aided by an expansion of the pore window, which contributes to increasing the rotational entropy of CO₂, as demonstrated through force field based free energy calculations.

Blue- and white-light-emitting 2D-coordination polymers and their solid-state photodimerization reaction

Two Pb(ii) coordination polymers (CPs) isolated and show 2D-sheet-like structures. CPs with the formate, undergoes solid-state photodimerization and displays blue emission. While 2D sheet with acetate is photostable and show white-light emission.

Photochemical cycloaddition and temperature-dependent breathing in pillared-layer metal-organic frameworks

Single crystallinity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) enables the studies of their flexible behaviors with atomic precision. Here, we investigated the structural transformations triggered by photochemical cycloaddition and with temperature-dependent breathing in a series of pillared-layer MOF structures using a variety of pyrazolecarboxylate linkers for the layers and bipyridyl linkers as the pillars. The ethylenic double bonds from the pillars in close proximity undergo quantitative and seteroselective photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition upon UV irradiation, transforming the MOFs into structures with cyclobutane-based pillars. Furthermore, reversible breathing of the new pillared-layer MOF was evidenced by the 10.8% unit cell parameter change along c axis upon temperature change between 298 and 173 K. As revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, this transformation originates from the relative flattening of the wavy layers upon cooling. These two different types of characteristic structural transformations responding to inherent reactions and external stimuli happen at single crystalline state, providing a well-defined robust system with controlled flexibility.

Regioselective Photochemical Cycloaddition Reactions of Diolefinic Ligands in Coordination Polymers

The pure diolefinic ligand 1,4-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3-butadiene (bpbde) is photostable in the crystalline state. With the assistance of coordination-driven metal-organic assemblies, the photoreactivity of this diolefinic ligand can be significantly enhanced. A hydrothermal reaction of bpbde with Cd(NO₃ )₂ ⋅4 H₂ O and the auxiliary ligand adipic acid resulted in the formation of a two-dimensional photoreactive coordination polymer (CP), [Cd(adipate)(bpbde)]_n (1). When the aliphatic carboxylic acid was replaced by pimelic acid, another photoreactive CP [Cd(pimelate)(bpbde)]_n (2) with a three-dimensional framework was obtained. With irradiation of 365 nm UV light, the bpbde ligands in crystalline 1 and 2 underwent a regioselective photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition reaction and converted to 3,4,7,8-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)tricyclo[4.2.0.0^2,5 ]octane (tptco) and 1,3-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-2,4-bis(2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)cyclobutane (bpbpvcb), respectively. The results provide an interesting insight into the rational design of highly regio- or stereoselective photocatalytic reactions for the formation of special organic molecules.

1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid: a versatile hydrogen bonding template for controlling the regioselective topochemical synthesis of head-to-tail photodimers from stilbazole derivatives

The crystal engineering of hydrogen bonded organic assemblies based on 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (H4bta) and stilbazole derivatives (1-10) is exploited to provide regio-controlled [2 + 2] photocycloadditions in the solid state. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses have revealed that all the arrays are built-up from the self-assembly of the (H2bta)2- dianion with two stilbazolium cations via O-HO- and N+-HO- charge-assisted H-bonding synthons: (4-Hstilbazolium+)2(H2bta2-). The dianion displays an interesting diversity of H-bonding motifs. Such structural flexibility allowed us to obtain four structure-types defined by the preferential formation of intramolecular or intermolecular hydrogen bonds between carboxylate-carboxylic groups. In these ionic assemblies two predominant structural H-bonding patterns were observed. The first pattern is characterised by the formation of intramolecular H-bonds in the dianion, leading to discrete assemblies based on ternary arrays. The second hydrogen pattern consists of 2-D hydrogen networks built-up from the self-assembly of anions via intermolecular H-bonds that are linked to the cations. Two additional examples, in which the dianion is self-assembled in two types of ribbons, were also observed. Another supramolecular feature predominant in all these arrays is the stacking of the cations in a head-to-tail fashion, which is controlled via cation-π interactions. These arrays are photoactive in the solid state upon UV-irradiation leading to the regioselective synthesis of rctt-cyclobutane head-to-tail-isomers in high to quantitative yield. In this work, the template tolerance either to steric or electronic effects by changing the number or positions of the supramolecular interactions exerted by distinctive functional groups was also explored. In addition, assemblies bearing 2-chloro (7 and 8) and 3-chloro-4-stilbazole (1 and 9) crystallize in two different crystalline forms, leading to novel examples of supramolecular isomers with similar solid state reactivity.

Cu(I) Coordination Polymers as the Green Heterogeneous Catalysts for Direct C-H Bonds Activation of Arylalkanes to Ketones in Water with Spatial Confinement Effect

To develop coordination polymers (CPs) as catalysts to selectively catalyze the reaction of C-H bond activation of arylalkanes to their homologous ketones, three new Cu(I)-based coordination polymers (Cu^I-CPs) [CuI(aas-TPB)]_n (1), [CuBr(ass-TPB)CH₃CN]_n (2), and {[Cu(ass-TPB)]Cl}_n (3) (TPB = N,N,N-tris(3-pyridinyl)-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxamide) were synthesized. Structural variations from a herringbone fashion one-dimensional framework of 1 to a two-dimensional framework of 2 containing a 48-membered macrocycle and a cationic three-dimensional framework of 3 filled with Cl^- anions were observed arising from the different halogen ions (I^-, Br^-, and Cl^-). 1-3 were used as the green heterogeneous catalysts to catalyze direct C-H bond activation reactions of arylalkanes to ketones under mild reaction conditions with water as solvent. Handy product separation, convenient reaction procedures, and recyclability of these catalysts make the catalytic system fascinating. Moreover, the Cu^I-CPs performed the reaction with high regioselectivity due to the unique spatial confinement effect of CPs.

Liquid-free single-crystal to single-crystal transformations in coordination polymers

Single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) transformations not only can create new materials, but also provide an opportunity to explore the process of forming a chemical bond. SCSC transformations discussed in this paper are confined to transformationsviaan absolutely liquid-free mode and involve the breakage and formation of new chemical bonds.

Deciphering the Structural Relationships of Five Cd-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The one-pot reaction of Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O and 5-(6-(hydroxymethyl)pyridin-3-yl)isophthalic acid (H₂L) in DMF/H₂O (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) produced a two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) of [Cd(L)(H₂O)₂] (A) bearing aqua-bridged Cd centers, accompanied by two three-dimensional (3D) MOFs [Cd(L)(DMF)_0.5] (B) and [Cd(L)] (C). Removing the bridging aqua molecules of A by heating led to the formation of an additional 3D MOF of [Cd(L)] (D) in a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) manner. The search for the preceding compound that could convert to A resulted in the isolation of a 2D MOF [Cd(L)(DMF)] (E) that readily converted to A in water, but with the loss of single crystallinity. Upon excitation at 350 nm, A, D, E, and the ligand H₂L fluoresced at 460 nm, 468 nm, 475 nm, and 411 nm, respectively. The fluorescence of A could be used for the selective detection of Fe³⁺ in water down to 0.58 ppm. This quenching was not affected by the presence of other common metal ions.

Platforms Formed from a Three-Dimensional Cu-Based Zwitterionic Metal-Organic Framework and Probe ss-DNA: Selective Fluorescent Biosensors for Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 ds-DNA and Sudan Virus RNA Sequences

We herein report a water-stable three-dimensional Cu-based metal-organic framework (MOF) 1 supported by a tritopic quaternized carboxylate and 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide as an ancillary ligand. This MOF exhibits unique pore shapes with aromatic rings, positively charged pyridinium and unsaturated Cu(II) cation centers, free carboxylates, tessellating H2O, and coordinating SO4(2-) on the pore surface. Compound 1 can interact with two carboxyfluorescein (FAM)-labeled single-stranded DNA sequences (probe ss-DNA, delineated as P-DNA) through electrostatic, π-stacking, and/or hydrogen-bonding interactions to form two P-DNA@1 systems, and thus quench the fluorescence of FAM via a photoinduced electron-transfer process. These P-DNA@1 systems can be used as effective fluorescent sensors for human immunodeficiency virus 1 double-stranded DNA and Sudan virus RNA sequences, respectively, with detection limits of 196 and 73 pM, respectively.
