Abstract
The UV-Vis spectrum of the solvated purine derivative Hypoxanthine (HYX) is investigated using the Quantum Mechanics/Fluctuating Charges (QM/FQ) multiscale approach combined with a sampling of configurations through atomistic Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. Keto 1H7H and 1H9H tautomeric forms of HYX are the most stable in aqueous solution and form different stable complexes with the surrounding water molecules, ultimately affecting the electronic absorption spectra. The final simulated spectrum resulting from the combination of the individual spectra of tautomers agrees very well with most of the characteristics in the measured spectrum. The importance of considering the effect of the solute tautomers and, in parallel, the contribution of the different solvent arrangements around the solute when modeling spectral properties, is highlighted. In addition, the high quality of the computed spectra leads to suggesting an alternative way for acquiring tautomeric populations from combined computational/experimental spectra.

Abstract
2,6-Diaminopurine (2,6-dAP) is an alternative nucleobase that potentially played a role in prebiotic chemistry. We studied its excited state dynamics in the gas phase by REMPI, IR-UV hole burning, and ps pump-probe spectroscopy and performed quantum chemical calculations at the SCS-ADC(2) level of theory to interpret the experimental results. We found the 9H tautomer to have a small barrier to ultrafast relaxation via puckering of its 6-membered ring. The 7H tautomer has a larger barrier to reach a conical intersection and also has a sizable triplet yield. These results are discussed relative to other purines, for which 9H tautomerization appears to be more photostable than 7H and homosubstituted purines appear to be less photostable than heterosubstituted or singly substituted purines.

Abstract
In the scientific endeavor to understand the chemical origins of life, the photochemistry of the smallest life building blocks, nucleobases, has been a constant object of focus and intense research. Here, we report the results of the first theoretical study on the photo-properties of an 8-oxo-hypoxanthine molecule, the chromophore of 8-oxo-inosine, which is relevant to the recently proposed, prebiotically plausible synthetic routes to the formation of purine- and pyrimidine-nucleotides. With ab initio and semi-empirical OM2/MRCI quantum-chemistry calculations, we predict a strong photostability of the 8-oxo-hypoxanthine system and see the origin of this effect in ultrafast nonradiative relaxation through puckering of the 6-membered heterocyclic ring.

Abstract
The photophysical relaxation pathways of tzA, tzG, and tzI luminescent nucleobases were investigated with the MS-CASPT2 quantum-chemical method and double-ζ basis sets (cc-pVDZ) in gas and condensed phases (1,4-dioxane and water) with the sequential Monte Carlo/CASPT2 and free energy gradient (FEG) methods. Solvation shell structures, in the ground and excited states, were examined with the pairwise radial distribution function (G(r)) and solute-solvent hydrogen-bond networks. Site-specific hydrogen bonding analysis evidenced relevant changes between both electronic states. The three luminescent nucleobases share a common photophysical pattern, summarized as the lowest-lying 1(ππ*) bright state that is populated directly after the absorption of radiation and evolves barrierless to the minimum energy structure, from where the excess of energy is released by fluorescence. From the 1(ππ*)min region, the conical intersection with the ground state ((ππ*/GS)CI) is not accessible due to the presence of high energetic barriers. By combining the present results with those reported earlier by us for the pyrimidine fluorescent nucleobases, we present a comprehensive description of the photophysical properties of this important class of new fluorescent nucleosides.

Abstract
Ultrafast energy dissipation is a crucial factor for the photostability of DNA and RNA, but even some of the key electronic deactivation pathways in monomeric nucleic acid building stones are still controversial. Here, we report on the excited-state dynamics of the rare nucleotide xanthosine monophosphate as a function of deprotonation state (XMP vs. XMP−) and excitation wavelength (λpump= 278–243 nm) by femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy. We show that the predominating relaxation channel leads to a return of the photo-excited molecules to the electronic ground state in τ∼1 ps. The mechanism likely involves an out-of-plane deformation of the five-membered ring, different from the main electronic deactivation pathways in the canonical purine bases adenine and guanine. The results are discussed in terms of the structural and electronic differences of XMP compared to the canonical nucleotides.

Abstract
The photophysical behavior of three lowest-energy tautomers of uric acid and seven most stable isomers of uric acid monohydrate is comprehensively studied by ab initio calculations. Ground-state energies are calculated with the CCSD(T) method, while excitation and ionization energies as well as excited-state potential energy profiles of photoinduced processes are calculated with the CC2 method. For the (1)ππ* state, it is found that the excitation energy of the monohydrate cluster is significantly lower than that of isolated uric acid when the water molecule is hydrogen-bonded at a specific carbonyl group. The calculated excited-state potential energy profiles suggest that some monohydrate isomers can undergo a migration of the water molecule from one site to another site in the (1)ππ* state with a small energy barrier. It is also found for both uric acid and its monohydrate that nonradiative decay via the NH bond dissociation in the (1)πσ* state is likely to occur at higher excitation energies. On the basis of the computational results, possible mechanisms for the absence of specific isomers of uric acid monohydrate from the resonant two-photon ionization spectrum are discussed.
