Vanadium as a Ti-like mediator boosting electronic transmission in Fe-based MOFs for photocatalytic sterilization

Efficient metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) photocatalytic bactericidal catalysts are urgently needed in water purification. Herein, a Fe-MOF (MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5) with promoted electron transport was achieved by vanadium (V) ions doping and V/Fe ratio optimization, showing excellent photocatalytic bactericidal activity againstE. coliunder visible light irradiation (99.92%). The efficient antibacterial mechanism, V as a Ti-like mediator boosting electronic transmission in MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5), was revealed by its band structure, transient photocurrent, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scavenger quenching experiments. The enhancement of photocatalytic bactericidal performance of Fe-MOFs by V-ion-doping was confirmed by two other Fe-MOFs, MIL-53-NH2(V1Fe5) and MIL-101-NH2(V1Fe5), with the same metal ions and ligands, both of which have higher performance than the corresponding undoped MOFs. Among them, MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5) exhibits the highest photocatalytic bactericidal activity due to its suitable metal clusters ([M(μ3-O)] cluster) and topological structure (three-dimensional rhomboid network structure). This work demonstrated the amplification effect of V ion doping on electron transport in Fe-MOFs photocatalysts.

In Situ TEM Characterization and Modulation for Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

Solid-state phase transformation is an intriguing phenomenon in crystalline or noncrystalline solids due to the distinct physical and chemical properties that can be obtained and modified by phase engineering. Compared to bulk solids, nanomaterials exhibit enhanced capability for phase engineering due to their small sizes and high surface-to-volume ratios, facilitating various emerging applications. To establish a comprehensive atomistic understanding of phase engineering, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques have emerged as powerful tools, providing unprecedented atomic-resolution imaging, multiple characterization and stimulation mechanisms, and real-time integrations with various external fields. In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in in situ TEM studies to characterize and modulate nanomaterials for phase transformations under different stimuli, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, environmental, optical, and magnetic factors. We briefly introduce crystalline structures and polymorphism and then summarize phase stability and phase transformation models. The advanced experimental setups of in situ techniques are outlined and the advantages of in situ TEM phase engineering are highlighted, as demonstrated via several representative examples. Besides, the distinctive properties that can be obtained from in situ phase engineering are presented. Finally, current challenges and future research opportunities, along with their potential applications, are suggested.

Low-Temperature Propane Activation and Mineralization over a Co3O4 Sub-nanometer Porous Sheet: Atomic-Level Insights

Light alkanes make up a class of widespread volatile organic compounds (VOCs), bringing great environmental hazards and health concerns. However, the low-temperature catalytic destruction of light alkanes is still a great challenge to settle due to their high reaction inertness and weak polarity. Herein, a Co3O4 sub-nanometer porous sheet (Co3O4-SPS) was fabricated and comprehensively compared with its bulk counterparts in the catalytic oxidation of C3H8. Results demonstrated that abundant low-coordinated Co atoms on the Co3O4-SPS surface boost the activation of adsorbed oxygen and enhance the catalytic activity. Moreover, Co3O4-SPS has better surface metal properties, which is beneficial to electron transfer between the catalyst surface and the reactant molecules, promoting the interaction between C3H8 molecules and dissociated O atoms and facilitating the activation of C-H bonds. Due to these, Co3O4-SPS harvests a prominent performance for C3H8 destruction, 100% of which decomposed at 165 °C (apparent activation energy of 49.4 kJ mol-1), much better than the bulk Co3O4 (450 °C and 126.9 kJ mol-1) and typical noble metal catalysts. Moreover, Co3O4-SPS also has excellent thermal stability and water resistance. This study deepens the atomic-level insights into the catalytic capacity of Co3O4-SPS in light alkane purification and provides references for designing efficacious catalysts for thermocatalytic oxidation reactions.

The Ambiguous Origin of Thermochromism in Molecular Crystals of Dichalcogenides: Chalcogen Bonds versus Dynamic Se-Se/Te-Te Bonds

We report thermochromism in crystals of diphenyl diselenide (dpdSe) and diphenyl ditelluride (dpdTe), which is at variance with the commonly known mechanisms of thermochromism in molecular crystals. Variable temperature neutron diffraction studies indicated no conformational change, tautomerization or phase transition between 100 K and 295 K. High-pressure crystallography studies indicated no associated piezochromism in dpdSe and dpdTe crystals. The evolution of the crystal structures and their electronic band structure with pressure and temperature reveal the contributions of intramolecular and intermolecular factors towards the origin of thermochromism-especially the intermolecular Se⋅⋅⋅Se and Te⋅⋅⋅Te chalcogen bonds and torsional modes of vibrations around the dynamic Se-Se and Te-Te bonds. Further, a co-crystal of dpdSe with iodine (dpdSe-I2 ) and an alloy crystal of dpdSe and dpdTe implied a predominantly intramolecular origin of the observed thermochromism associated with vibronic coupling.

Regulating Zinc Storage Behaviors of Tunnel Structure Cathodes Via Tungsten Induction

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have received continuous interests because of applying low-cost and eco-friendly aqueous electrolytes and having high safety. Beyond energetically to explore new-type cathode materials, it is of great significance to regulate the zinc storage behavior of the existing cathodes in order to understand the underlying working mechanism. Therefore, as a proof of concept, this work achieves the regulation of zinc storage behaviors of the tunnel structure tunnel structure B-phase vanadium dioxide (VO2 (B)) and vanadium oxide (V6 O13 ) cathodes via a simple chemical tungsten-doping induction approach. Under low-concentration tungsten-doping induction of 1, 2 and 3 at.%, the tunnel sizes of VO2 (B) can be controlled readily. Moreover, the V6 O13 with large size tunnels can be achieved by medium-concentration tungsten induction of 6 and 9 at.%. It is demonstrated that tungsten induced VO2 (B) can achieve zinc storage without lattice structure change via operando X-ray diffraction analyses. Remarkably, via operando and non-operando analyses, tungsten induced V6 O13 with lager size tunnels can realize the oriented 1D zinc ion intercalation/deintercalation. The further kinetics analysis shows that the zinc storage is mainly diffusion control, which is different from most of vanadium-based cathodes with capacitance control. This viable tungsten-doping induction strategy provides a new insight into achieving the controllable regulation of zinc storage behaviors.

Chemical Modulation of Metal-Insulator Transition toward Multifunctional Applications in Vanadium Dioxide Nanostructures

The metal-insulator transition (MIT) of vanadium dioxide (VO2 ) has been of great interest in materials science for both fundamental understanding of strongly correlated physics and a wide range of applications in optics, thermotics, spintronics, and electronics. Due to the merits of chemical interaction with accessibility, versatility, and tunability, chemical modification provides a new perspective to regulate the MIT of VO2 , endowing VO2 with exciting properties and improved functionalities. In the past few years, plenty of efforts have been devoted to exploring innovative chemical approaches for the synthesis and MIT modulation of VO2 nanostructures, greatly contributing to the understanding of electronic correlations and development of MIT-driven functionalities. Here, this comprehensive review summarizes the recent achievements in chemical synthesis of VO2 and its MIT modulation involving hydrogen incorporation, composition engineering, surface modification, and electrochemical gating. The newly appearing phenomena, mechanism of electronic correlation, and structural instability are discussed. Furthermore, progresses related to MIT-driven applications are presented, such as the smart window, optoelectronic detector, thermal microactuator, thermal radiation coating, spintronic device, memristive, and neuromorphic device. Finally, the challenges and prospects in future research of chemical modulation and functional applications of VO2 MIT are also provided.

Acidity of Carboxylic Acid Ligands Influences the Formation of VO2(A) and VO2(B) Nanocrystals under Solvothermal Conditions

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) can adopt many different crystal structures at ambient temperature and pressure, each with different, and often desirable, electronic, optical, and chemical properties. Understanding how to control which crystal phase forms under various reaction conditions is therefore crucial to developing VO2 for various applications. This paper describes the impact of ligand acidity on the formation of VO2 nanocrystals from the solvothermal reaction of vanadyl acetylacetonate (VO(acac)2) with stoichiometric amounts of water. Carboxylic acids examined herein favor the formation of the monoclinic VO2(B) phase over the tetragonal VO2(A) phase as the concentration of water in the reaction increases. However, the threshold concentration of water required to obtain phase-pure VO2(B) nanocrystals increases as the pKa of the carboxylic acid decreases. We also observe that increasing the concentration of VO(acac)2 or the concentration of acid while keeping the concentration of water constant favors the formation of VO2(A). Single-crystal electron diffraction measurements enable the identification of vanadyl carboxylate species formed in reactions that do not contain enough water to promote the formation of VO2. Increasing the length of the carbon chain on aliphatic carboxylic acids did not impact the phase of VO2 nanocrystals obtained but did result in a change from nanorod to nanoplatelet morphology. These results suggest that inhibiting the rate of hydrolysis of the VO(acac)2 precursor either by decreasing the ratio of water to VO(acac)2 or by increasing the fraction of water molecules that are protonated favors the formation of VO2(A) over VO2(B).

Medicinal applications of vanadium complexes with Schiff bases

Many transition metal complexes have been explored for their therapeutic properties after the discovery of cisplatin. Schiff bases have an efficient complexation tendency with the transition metals and several medicinal properties have been reported. However, fewer studies have reported the medicinal utility of vanadium and its Schiff base complexes. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of vanadium complexes with Schiff bases along with their mechanistic insight. Vanadium complexes in + 4 and + 5 oxidation states have exhibited well-defined geometry and found to be thermodynamically stable. The studies have reported the G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest and decreased delta psi m, inducing mitochondrial membrane depolarization in cancer cell lines along with the alterations in the metabolism of the cancer cells upon dosing with the vanadium complexes. Cancer cell invasion and growth are also found to be markedly reduced by peroxo complexes of vanadium. The studies included in the review paper have been taken from leading indexing databases and focus was laid on recent reports in literature. The biological potential of vanadium complexes of Schiff bases opens new horizons for future interdisciplinary studies and investigation focussed on understanding the biochemistry of these complexes, along with designing new complexes which have better bioavailability, solubility and low or non-toxicity.

A Review of Phase-Change Materials and Their Potential for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Phase-change materials (PCMs) and metal-insulator transition (MIT) materials have the unique feature of changing their material phase through external excitations such as conductive heating, optical stimulation, or the application of electric or magnetic fields, which, in turn, results in changes to their electrical and optical properties. This feature can find applications in many fields, particularly in reconfigurable electrical and optical structures. Among these applications, the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising platform for both wireless RF applications as well as optical ones. This paper reviews the current, state-of-the-art PCMs within the context of RIS, their material properties, their performance metrics, some applications found in the literature, and how they can impact the future of RIS.

Preventing Vanishing Gradient Problem of Hardware Neuromorphic System by Implementing Imidazole-Based Memristive ReLU Activation Neuron

With advances in artificial intelligent services, brain-inspired neuromorphic systems with synaptic devices are recently attracting significant interest to circumvent the von Neumann bottleneck. However, the increasing trend of deep neural network parameters causes huge power consumption and large area overhead of a nonlinear neuron electronic circuit, and it incurs a vanishing gradient problem. Here, a memristor-based compact and energy-efficient neuron device is presented to implement a rectifying linear unit (ReLU) activation function. To emulate the volatile and gradual switching of the ReLU function, a copolymer memristor with a hybrid structure is proposed using a copolymer/inorganic bilayer. The functional copolymer film developed by introducing imidazole functional groups enables the formation of nanocluster-type pseudo-conductive filaments by boosting the nucleation of Cu nanoclusters, causing gradual switching. The ReLU neuron device is successfully demonstrated by integrating the memristor with amorphous InGaZnO thin-film transistors, and achieves 0.5 pJ of energy consumption based on sub-10 µA operation current and high-speed switching of 650 ns. Furthermore, device-to-system-level simulation using neuron devices on the MNIST dataset demonstrates that the vanishing gradient problem is effectively resolved by five-layer deep neural networks. The proposed neuron device will enable the implementation of high-density and energy-efficient hardware neuromorphic systems.

Impact of the uniaxial strain on terahertz modulation characteristics in flexible epitaxial VO2 film across the phase transition

Exploring flexible electronics is on the verge of innovative breakthroughs in terahertz (THz) communication technology. Vanadium dioxide (VO₂) with insulator-metal transition (IMT) has excellent application potential in various THz smart devices, but the associated THz modulation properties in the flexible state have rarely been reported. Herein, we deposited an epitaxial VO₂ film on a flexible mica substrate via pulsed-laser deposition and investigated its THz modulation properties under different uniaxial strains across the phase transition. It was observed that the THz modulation depth increases under compressive strain and decreases under tensile strain. Moreover, the phase-transition threshold depends on the uniaxial strain. Particularly, the rate of the phase transition temperature depends on the uniaxial strain and reaches approximately 6 °C/% in the temperature-induced phase transition. The optical trigger threshold in laser-induced phase transition decreased by 38.9% under compressive strain but increased by 36.7% under tensile strain, compared to the initial state without uniaxial strain. These findings demonstrate the uniaxial strain-induced low-power triggered THz modulation and provide new insights for applying phase transition oxide films in THz flexible electronics.

Vanadium Oxide: Phase Diagrams, Structures, Synthesis, and Applications

Vanadium oxides with multioxidation states and various crystalline structures offer unique electrical, optical, optoelectronic and magnetic properties, which could be manipulated for various applications. For the past 30 years, significant efforts have been made to study the fundamental science and explore the potential for vanadium oxide materials in ion batteries, water splitting, smart windows, supercapacitors, sensors, and so on. This review focuses on the most recent progress in synthesis methods and applications of some thermodynamically stable and metastable vanadium oxides, including but not limited to V₂O₃, V₃O₅, VO₂, V₃O₇, V₂O₅, V₂O₂, V₆O₁₃, and V₄O₉. We begin with a tutorial on the phase diagram of the V-O system. The second part is a detailed review covering the crystal structure, the synthesis protocols, and the applications of each vanadium oxide, especially in batteries, catalysts, smart windows, and supercapacitors. We conclude with a brief perspective on how material and device improvements can address current deficiencies. This comprehensive review could accelerate the development of novel vanadium oxide structures in related applications.

Amorphous ITZO-Based Selector Device for Memristor Crossbar Array

In the era of digital transformation, a memristor and memristive circuit can provide an advanced computer architecture that efficiently processes a vast quantity of data. With the unique characteristic of memristor, a memristive crossbar array has been utilized for realization of nonvolatile memory, logic-in-memory circuit, and neuromorphic system. However, the crossbar array architecture suffers from leakage of current, known as the sneak current, which causes a cross-talk interference problem between adjacent memristor devices, leading to an unavoidable operational error and high power consumption. Here, we present an amorphous In-Sn-Zn-O (a-ITZO) oxide semiconductor-based selector device to address the sneak current issue. The a-ITZO-selector device is realized with the back-to-back Schottky diode with nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. Its nonlinearity is dependent on the oxygen plasma treatment process which can suppress the surface electron accumulation layer arising on the a-ITZO surface. The a-ITZO-selector device shows reliable characteristics against electrical stress and high temperature. In addition, the selector device allows for a stable read margin over 1 Mbit of memristor crossbar array. The findings may offer a feasible solution for the development of a high-density memristor crossbar array.

Aging-Responsive Phase Transition of VOOH to V10O24·nH2O vs Zn2+ Storage Performance as a Rechargeable Aqueous Zn-Ion Battery Cathode

Vanadium oxyhydroxide has been recently investigated as a starting material to synthesize different phases of vanadium oxides by electrochemical or thermal conversion and has been used as an aqueous zinc-ion battery (AZIB) cathode. However, the low-valent vanadium oxides have poor phase stability under ambient conditions. So far, there is no study on understanding the phase evolution of such low-valent vanadium oxides and their effect on the electrochemical performance toward hosting the Zn²⁺ ions. The primary goal of the work is to develop a high-performance AZIB cathode, and the highlight of the current work is the insight into the auto-oxidation-induced phase transition of VOOH to V₁₀O₂₄·nH₂O under ambient conditions and Zn²⁺ intercalation behavior thereon as an aqueous zinc-ion battery cathode. Herein, we demonstrate that hydrothermally synthesized VOOH undergoes a phase transition to V₁₀O₂₄·nH₂O during both the electrochemical cycling and aerial aging over 38-45 days. However, continued aging till 150 days at room temperature in an open atmosphere exhibited an increased interlayer water content in the V₁₀O₂₄·nH₂O, which was associated with a morphological change with different surface area/porosity characteristics and notably reduced charge transfer/diffusion resistance as an aqueous zinc-ion battery cathode. Although the fresh VOOH cathode had impressive specific capacity at rate performance, (326 mAh/g capacity at 0.1 A/g current and 104 mAh/g capacity at 4 A/g current) the cathode suffered from a continuous capacity decay. Interestingly, the aged VOOH electrodes showed gradually decreasing specific capacity with aging at low current and however followed the reverse order at high current. At a comparable specific power of ∼64-66 W/kg, the fresh VOOH and aged VOOH after 60, 120, and 150 days of aging showed the respective energy densities of 208.3, 281.2, 269.2, and 240.6 Wh/kg. Among all the VOOH materials, the 150 day-aged VOOH cathode exhibited the highest energy density at a power density beyond 1000 W/kg. Thanks to the improved kinetics, the 150 day-aged VOOH cathode delivered a considerable energy density of 39.7 Wh/kg with a high specific power of 4466 W/kg. Also, it showed excellent cycling performance with only 0.002% capacity loss per cycle over 20 300 cycles at 10 A/g.

A green chemistry approach for oxidation of alcohols using novel bioactive cobalt composite immobilized on polysulfone fibrous network nanoparticles as a catalyst

In this study, cobalt composite immobilized on polysulfone fibrous network nanoparticles (CCPSF NPs) were synthesized in a controllable and one-step way under microwave-assisted conditions. The structure of CCPSF NPs was characterized by SEM images (for morphology and size distribution), TGA (for thermal stability), BET technique (for the specific surface area), FT-IR spectroscopy (for relation group characterization), and XRD patterns (for crystal size). The oxidation of the primary and secondary alcohols to aldehyde and ketone was investigated using synthesized CCPSF NPs under solvent-free microwave-assisted conditions, and high oxidizing activity was observed. In addition to oxidation properties, the anticancer activity of the synthesized CCPSF NPs in breast cancer was evaluated by the MTT method , and significant results were obtained.

Facile Synthesis of Two Dimensional (2D) V2O5 Nanosheets Film towards Photodetectors

Most of the studies focused on V₂O₅ have been devoted to obtaining specific morphology and microstructure for its intended applications. Two dimensional (2D) V₂O₅ has the most valuable structure because of its unique planar configuration that can offer more active sites. In this study, a bottom-up and low-cost method that is hydrothermal combined with spin-coating and subsequent annealing was developed to prepare 2D V₂O₅ nanosheets film on quartz substrate. First, VOOH nanosheets were prepared by the hydrothermal method using V₂O₅ powders and EG as raw materials. Further, V₂O₅ nanosheets with an average lateral size over 500 nm and thickness less than 10 nm can be prepared from the parent VOOH nanosheets by annealing at 350 °C for 15 min in air. The prepared V₂O₅ nanosheets film was assembled of multiple nanosheets. The structural, morphological, microstructural and optical properties of the films were respective investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis. The photodetector based on V₂O₅ nanosheets film shows good photoresponse with a response time of 2.4 s and a recovery time of 4.7 s.

Synthesis of efficient cobalt-metal organic framework as reusable nanocatalyst in the synthesis of new 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives with antioxidant activity

Efficient cobalt-metal organic framework (Co-MOF) was prepared via a controllable microwave-assisted reverse micelle synthesis route. The products were characterized by SEM image, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm, FTIR spectrum, and TG analysis. Results showed that the products have small particle size distribution, homogenous morphology, significant surface area, and high thermal stability. The physicochemical properties of the final products were remarkable compared with other MOF samples. The newly synthesized nanostructures were used as recyclable catalysts in the synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives. After the confirmation of related structures, the antioxidant activity of derivatives based on the DPPH method was evaluated and the relationship between structures and antioxidant activity was observed. In addition to recyclability, the catalytic activity of Co-MOF studied in this research has remarkable effects on the synthesis of 1,4 dihydropyridine derivatives.

Persona of Transition Metal Ions in Solids: A Statistical Learning on Local Structures of Transition Metal Oxides

The local structure of a transition metal (TM) ion is a function of cation elements and valence states. More than that, in this work, by employing a trove of first-principles data of TM oxides, the local structures of TM cations are statistically analyzed to extract detailed information about cation site preference, bond length, site structural distortion, and cation magnetization. It is found that cation radius alone poorly describes the local structure of a transition metal oxide, while the statistics of coordination number as well as the TMO bond length distribution, especially that of the 3d TMs, can provide comprehensive knowledge for understanding the behavior of TM elements. Based on these statistics, the interplay of site distortion due to the Jahn-Teller effect, cation site similarity, and a new set of ionic radii are all obtained to chart the "persona" of transition metal ions in solids.

Progress on two-dimensional binary oxide materials

Two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials have attracted much attention because of their unique electronic and optical properties. Since the successful isolation of graphene in 2004, many interesting 2D materials have emerged, including elemental olefins (silicene, germanene, etc.), transition metal chalcogenides, transition metal carbides (nitrides), hexagonal boron, etc. On the other hand, 2D binary oxide materials are an important group in the 2D family owing to their high structural diversity, low cost, high stability, and strong adjustability. This review systematically summarizes the research progress on 2D binary oxide materials. We discuss their composition and structure in terms of vdW and non-vdW categories in detail, followed by a discussion of their synthesis methods. In particular, we focus on strategies to tailor the properties of 2D oxides and their emerging applications in different fields. Finally, the challenges and future developments of 2D binary oxides are provided.

Mapping the electrocatalytic water splitting activity of VO2 across its insulator-to-metal phase transition

The electrocatalytic water splitting activity of V-based oxides has been rarely investigated, even though several polymorphs in VO₂ are expected to exhibit different electrocatalytic activities depending on their crystal and electronic structures. The rutile structure of VO₂(R), showing metallic character, is a good candidate for a new electrocatalyst since it undergoes insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) from the insulating VO₂(M1) at a low temperature of 68 °C, and involves a substantially increased electrical conductivity by three orders of magnitude. The extensive improvements in the electrocatalytic activity for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are confirmed when the IMT is induced where the overpotential (η₁₀) is reduced from 1056 mV to 598 mV in the OER and 411 mV to 136 mV in the HER, respectively. This improvement is attributed to the increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), reduced charge transfer resistance, and increased electron density, driven by the IMT to the metallic VO₂(R) phase.

Facile Synthesis of 4,4'-biphenyl Dicarboxylic Acid-Based Nickel Metal Organic Frameworks with a Tunable Pore Size towards High-Performance Supercapacitors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant research interest for supercapacitor applications due to their high-tunable conductivity and their structure’s pore size. In this work, we report a facile one-step hydrothermal method to synthesize nickel-based metal-organic frameworks (MOF) using organic linker 4,4′-biphenyl dicarboxylic acid (BPDC) for high-performance supercapacitors. The pore size of the Ni-BPDC-MOF nanostructure is tuned through different synthesization temperatures. Among them, the sample synthesized at 180 °C exhibits a nanoplate morphology with a specific surface area of 311.99 m²·g⁻¹, a pore size distribution of 1–40 nm and an average diameter of ~29.2 nm. A high specific capacitance of 488 F·g⁻¹ has been obtained at a current density of 1.0 A·g⁻¹ in a 3 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. The electrode shows reliable cycling stability, with 85% retention after 2000 cycles. The hydrothermal process Ni-BPDC-MOF may provide a simple and efficient method to synthesize high-performance hybrid MOF composites for future electrochemical energy storage applications.

Facile Solution Process of VO2 Film with Mesh Morphology for Enhanced Thermochromic Performance

The fabrication and applications of VO₂ film continue to be of considerable interest due to their good thermochromic performance for smart windows. However, low visible transmittance (T_lum) and solar modulation efficiency (∆T_sol) impede the application of VO₂ film, and they are difficult to improve simultaneously. Here, a facile zinc solution process was employed to control the surface structure of dense VO₂ film and the processed VO₂ film showed enhanced visible transmittance and solar modulation efficiency, which were increased by 7.5% and 9.5%, respectively, compared with unprocessed VO₂ film. This process facilitated the growth of layered basic zinc acetate (LBZA) nanosheets to form mesh morphology on the surface of VO₂ film, where LBZA nanosheets enhance the visible transmittance as an anti-reflection film. The mesh morphology also strengthened the solar modulation efficiency with small caves between nanosheets by multiplying the times of reflection. By increasing the zinc concentration from 0.05 mol/L to 0.20 mol/L, there were more LBZA nanosheets on the surface of the VO₂ film, leading to an increase in the solar/near-infrared modulation efficiency. Therefore, this work revealed the relationship between the solution process, surface structure, and optical properties, and thus can provide a new method to prepare VO₂ composite film with desirable performance for applications in smart windows.

V2 O3 /MnS Arrays as Bifunctional Air Electrode for Long-Lasting and Flexible Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries

Exploring highly efficient, stable, and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial for the wide commercialization of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Herein, a vanadium-oxide-based hybrid air electrode comprising a heterostructure of V₂ O₃ and MnS (V₂ O₃ /MnS) is reported. The V₂ O₃ /MnS catalyst shows a decent catalytic activity that is comparable to Pt/C toward the oxygen reduction reaction and acceptable toward oxygen evolution. The extraordinary stability as well as the low cost set the V₂ O₃ /MnS among the best bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. In a demonstration of an assembled liquid-state Zn-air battery using V₂ O₃ /MnS as cathode, high power density (118 mW cm^-2 ), specific capacity (808 mAh g_Zn ^-1 ), and energy density (970 Wh kg_Zn ^-1 ), as well as the outstanding rechargeability and durability for 4000 cycles (>1333 h, i.e., >55 days) are enabled. The V₂ O₃ /MnS is also integrated into an all-solid-state Zn-air battery to demonstrate its great potential as a flexible power source for next-generation electronics. Density functional theory calculations further elucidate the origin of the intrinsic activity and stability of the V₂ O₃ /MnS heterostructure.

2D Materials for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Although one of the most mature battery technologies, lithium-ion batteries still have many aspects that have not reached the desired requirements, such as energy density, current density, safety, environmental compatibility, and price. To solve these problems, all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLB) based on lithium metal anodes with high energy density and safety have been proposed and become a research hotpot in recent years. Due to the advanced electrochemical properties of 2D materials (2DM), they have been applied to mitigate some of the current problems of ASSLBs, such as high interface impedance and low electrolyte ionic conductivity. In this work, the background and fabrication method of 2DMs are reviewed initially. The improvement strategies of 2DMs are categorized based on their application in the three main components of ASSLBs: The anode, cathode, and electrolyte. Finally, to elucidate the mechanisms of 2DMs in ASSLBs, the role of in situ characterization, synchrotron X-ray techniques, and other advanced characterization are discussed.

VO2-based ultra-reconfigurable intelligent reflective surface for 5G applications

As demand for higher capacity wireless communications increases, new approaches are needed to improve capacity. The lack of configurable radio platforms and power consumed to create new signals are some of the limitations preventing further advancements. To address these limitations, we propose an Ultra-Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (URIS) platform based on the metal-to-insulator transition property of VO₂. A VO₂ layer is placed on a high-density micro-heater matrix consisting of pixels that can be electronically switched on. With this manner of control, heat can be transferred to selected areas of the VO₂ layer and convert it to highly conductive metallic phase. This technique allows dynamically changing the shape of the reflection surface with high speed. We numerically investigated the heat activated switching and RF reflection characteristics of a reflectarray designed for potential 5G applications operating at 32 GHz. It consists of heating pixels with the size of 40 × 40 μm which can generate metallic VO₂ patches or arbitrary shapes with ~ 100 × 100 μm spatial resolution. Our analyses resulted in large phase range of ~ 300° and approximate losses of −2 dB. The proposed device can serve as a novel platform for ultra-reconfigurable reflectarrays, other IRSs, and various wide spectral range RF applications.

Fast Ionic Storage in Aqueous Rechargeable Batteries: From Fundamentals to Applications

The highly dynamic nature of grid-scale energy systems necessitates fast kinetics in energy storage and conversion systems. Rechargeable aqueous batteries are a promising energy-storage solution for renewable-energy grids as the ionic diffusivity in aqueous electrolytes can be up to 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than in organic systems, in addition to being highly safe and low cost. Recent research in this regard has focussed on developing suitable electrode materials for fast ionic storage in aqueous electrolytes. In this review, breakthroughs in the field of fast ionic storage in aqueous battery materials, and 1D/2D/3D and over-3D-tunnel materials are summarized, and tunnels in over-3D materials are not oriented in any direction in particular. Various materials with different tunnel sizes are developed to be suitable for the different ionic radii of Li⁺ , Na⁺ , K⁺ , H⁺ , NH₄ ⁺ , and Zn²⁺ , which show significant differences in the reaction kinetics of ionic storage. New topochemical paths for ion insertion/extraction, which provide superfast ionic storage, are also discussed.

Ladder Oxygenation of Group VIII Metal Clusters and the Formation of Metalloxocubes M13O8. J Phys Chem Lett 2022;13:733-739. [PMID: 35025527 DOI: 10.1021/acs.jpclett.1c04098]

The diversity of valence and bonding of transition metals makes their oxidation processes perplexing at reduced sizes. Here we report a comprehensive study on the oxidation reactions of rhodium clusters Rh_n^± (n = 3-30) and find that Rh_3,4O₄⁺, Rh_5-7O₆⁺, and Rh_8-13O₈⁺ always dominate the mass distributions showing size-dependent ladder oxygenation which is closely associated with the O-binding modes. While the Rh_8-13O₈⁺ clusters display a μ₃-O binding mode (hollow site adsorption), Rh_3-4O₄⁺ and Rh_5-7O₆⁺ favor the μ₂-O binding mode (edge-site adsorption) or a mixture of the two modes. The μ₃-O binding mode is inclined to yield a cubic Rh₁₃O₈, while the μ₂-O binding mode gives rise to oxygen-bridge protection for the metal clusters. Such ladder oxidation was also observed for Pt_n⁺, Fe_n⁺, Co_n⁺, and Ni_n⁺ clusters. We propose a three-dimensional diagram for the oxidation states and O-binding modes of metals, and highlight the metalloxocubes M₁₃O₈⁺ for cluster-genetic materials.

Topochemical Transformation of Two-Dimensional VSe2 into Metallic Nonlayered VO2 for Water Splitting Reactions in Acidic and Alkaline Media

The engineering of the structural and morphological properties of nanomaterials is a fundamental aspect to attain desired performance in energy storage/conversion systems and multifunctional composites. We report the synthesis of room temperature-stable metallic rutile VO₂ (VO₂ (R)) nanosheets by topochemically transforming liquid-phase exfoliated VSe₂ in a reductive Ar-H₂ atmosphere. The as-produced VO₂ (R) represents an example of two-dimensional (2D) nonlayered materials, whose bulk counterparts do not have a layered structure composed by layers held together by van der Waals force or electrostatic forces between charged layers and counterbalancing ions amid them. By pretreating the VSe₂ nanosheets by O₂ plasma, the resulting 2D VO₂ (R) nanosheets exhibit a porous morphology that increases the material specific surface area while introducing defective sites. The as-synthesized porous (holey)-VO₂ (R) nanosheets are investigated as metallic catalysts for the water splitting reactions in both acidic and alkaline media, reaching a maximum mass activity of 972.3 A g^-1 at -0.300 V vs RHE for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ (faradaic efficiency = 100%, overpotential for the HER at 10 mA cm^-2 = 0.184 V) and a mass activity (calculated for a non 100% faradaic efficiency) of 745.9 A g^-1 at +1.580 V vs RHE for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH (overpotential for the OER at 10 mA cm^-2 = 0.209 V). By demonstrating proof-of-concept electrolyzers, our results show the possibility to synthesize special material phases through topochemical conversion of 2D materials for advanced energy-related applications.

Recent Advances in Fabrication of Flexible, Thermochromic Vanadium Dioxide Films for Smart Windows

Monoclinic-phase VO₂ (VO₂(M)) has been extensively studied for use in energy-saving smart windows owing to its reversible insulator–metal transition property. At the critical temperature (T_c = 68 °C), the insulating VO₂(M) (space group P21/c) is transformed into metallic rutile VO₂ (VO₂(R) space group P42/mnm). VO₂(M) exhibits high transmittance in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength; however, the NIR transmittance decreases significantly after phase transition into VO₂(R) at a higher T_c, which obstructs the infrared radiation in the solar spectrum and aids in managing the indoor temperature without requiring an external power supply. Recently, the fabrication of flexible thermochromic VO₂(M) thin films has also attracted considerable attention. These flexible films exhibit considerable potential for practical applications because they can be promptly applied to windows in existing buildings and easily integrated into curved surfaces, such as windshields and other automotive windows. Furthermore, flexible VO₂(M) thin films fabricated on microscales are potentially applicable in optical actuators and switches. However, most of the existing fabrication methods of phase-pure VO₂(M) thin films involve chamber-based deposition, which typically require a high-temperature deposition or calcination process. In this case, flexible polymer substrates cannot be used owing to the low-thermal-resistance condition in the process, which limits the utilization of flexible smart windows in several emerging applications. In this review, we focus on recent advances in the fabrication methods of flexible thermochromic VO₂(M) thin films using vacuum deposition methods and solution-based processes and discuss the optical properties of these flexible VO₂(M) thin films for potential applications in energy-saving smart windows and several other emerging technologies.

Modelling local structural and electronic consequences of proton and hydrogen-atom uptake in VO2 with polyoxovanadate clusters

We report the synthesis and characterisation of a series of siloxide-functionalised polyoxovanadate-alkoxide (POV-alkoxide) clusters, [V6O6(OSiMe3)(OMe)12] n (n = 1-, 2-), that serve as molecular models for proton and hydrogen-atom uptake in vanadium dioxide, respectively. Installation of a siloxide moiety on the surface of the Lindqvist core was accomplished via addition of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethylsulfonate to the fully-oxygenated cluster [V6O7(OMe)12]2-. Characterisation of [V6O6(OSiMe3)(OMe)12]1- by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the incorporation of the siloxide group does not result in charge separation within the hexavanadate assembly, an observation that contrasts directly with the behavior of clusters bearing substitutional dopants. The reduced assembly, [V6O6(OSiMe3)(OMe)12]2-, provides an isoelectronic model for H-doped VO2, with a vanadium(iii) ion embedded within the cluster core. Notably, structural analysis of [V6O6(OSiMe3)(OMe)12]2- reveals bond perturbations at the siloxide-functionalised vanadium centre that resemble those invoked upon H-atom uptake in VO2 through ab initio calculations. Our results offer atomically precise insight into the local structural and electronic consequences of the installation of hydrogen-atom-like dopants in VO2, and challenge current perspectives of the operative mechanism of electron-proton co-doping in these materials.

Bistable absorption in a 1D photonic crystal with a nanocomposite defect layer

We investigate the nonlinear absorption properties of a defective one-dimensional photonic crystal at the near-infrared range using the nonlinear transfer matrix method. The defect is a nanocomposite layer containing vanadium dioxide nanoparticles sandwiched between two nonlinear dielectric layers. The linear absorption spectrum of the designed structure has three resonant absorption lines at the bandgap region of the photonic crystal. We can reconfigure the structure in the linear regime from nearly transparent to absorbent or vice versa in multiple resonant wavelengths by adjusting the temperature. Moreover, the system shows absorptive bistability by adjusting the intensity and incident angle of the input light. We discuss the tunability of the nonlinear absorption in detail. In the nonlinear regime, we show that, besides the temperature, the structure can be reconfigured from absorbent to transparent and vice versa by adjusting the incident optical power and the incident angle. We validate the results by examining the electric field distribution throughout the structure.

Controllable Heterojunctions with a Semicoherent Phase Boundary Boosting the Potassium Storage of CoSe2 /FeSe2

Heterostructure construction is an efficient method for reinforcing K⁺ storage of transition metal selenides. The spontaneously developed internal electric fields give a strong boost to charge transport and significantly reduce the activation energy. Nevertheless, perfection of the interfacial region based on the energy level gradient and lattice matching degree is still a great challenge. Herein, rich vacancies and ultrafine CoSe₂ -FeSe₂ heterojunctions with semicoherent phase boundary are simultaneously obtained, which possess unique electronic structures and abundant active sites. When employed as anodes for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), CoSe₂ -FeSe₂ @C composites display a reversible potassium storage of 401.1 mAh g^-1 at 100 mA g^-1 and even 275 mAh g^-1 at 2 A g^-1 . Theoretical calculation also reveals that the potassium-ion diffusion can be dramatically promoted by the controllable CoSe₂ -FeSe₂ heterojunction.

Strain engineering of optical properties in transparent VO2/muscovite heterostructures

Transparent VO₂/muscovite heterostructures have attracted considerable attention because of their unique chemical and physical properties and potential practical applications. In this paper, we investigated the influence of uniaxial mechanical strain on the optical properties of VO₂/muscovite heterostructures through Raman scattering and optical transmittance measurements. Under applied strain, linear shifts in peak positions of Raman-active phonon modes at approximately 340, 309, and 391 cm^-1 were observed. The extracted Grüneisen parameter values were approximately between 0.44 and 0.57. Furthermore, a pronounced strain-induced change in the metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature was observed, which decreased under compressive strain and increased under tensile strain. The rates of MIT temperature variation reached 4.5 °C per % and 7.1 °C per % at a wavelength of 1200 nm during heating and cooling processes, respectively. These results demonstrate that the modulation of the optical properties of VO₂/muscovite heterostructures is controllable and reversible through strain engineering, opening up new opportunities for applications in flexible and tunable photonic devices.

On-off near-infrared absorbance based on thermal-responsive plasmonic coupling in vanadium dioxide arrays for thermochromic windows

Vanadium dioxide (VO₂) emerges as an attractive plasmonic material due to its unique reversible thermal-responsive phase transition and the promising application in energy-saving smart windows. Here, by optimizing the geometry of VO₂ nano-cylinder arrays, we demonstrate a significant performance enhancement for energy-efficient thermochromic windows. Such a performance enhancement relies on the on-off behavior of plasmonic resonance in the extremely high packing density of VO₂ nano-cylinder arrays. Different from the typical plasmonic material, silver, VO₂ nano-cylinders are characterized to have strong absorbance in near-infrared spectrum with significantly weaker plasmonic coupling to their neighbors, making them suitable to be arranged with a high packing density. The VO₂ nano-cylinder arrays exhibit a 160% luminous transmittance increment, comparing to a flat film with the same solar modulation of ∼10%. The work provides a better understanding of the plasmonic behavior on phase-change VO₂ and an efficient method to enhance smart window performance.

Surface/Interface Chemistry Engineering of Correlated-Electron Materials: From Conducting Solids, Phase Transitions to External-Field Response

Correlated electronic materials (CEMs) with strong electron-electron interactions are often associated with exotic properties, such as metal-insulator transition (MIT), charge density wave (CDW), superconductivity, and magnetoresistance (MR), which are fundamental to next generation condensed matter research and electronic devices. When the dimension of CEMs decreases, exposing extremely high specific surface area and enhancing electronic correlation, the surface states are equally important to the bulk phase. Therefore, surface/interface chemical interactions provide an alternative route to regulate the intrinsic properties of low-dimensional CEMs. Here, recent achievements in surface/interface chemistry engineering of low-dimensional CEMs are reviewed, using surface modification, molecule-solid interaction, and interface electronic coupling, toward modulation of conducting solids, phase transitions including MIT, CDW, superconductivity, and magnetism transition, as well as external-field response. Surface/interface chemistry engineering provides a promising strategy for exploring novel properties and functional applications in low-dimensional CEMs. Finally, the current challenge and outlook of the surface/interface engineering are also pointed out for future research development.

Binary and Ternary Vanadium Oxides: General Overview, Physical Properties, and Photochemical Processes for Environmental Applications

This review article is a comprehensive report on vanadium oxides which are interesting materials for environmental applications. Therefore, a general overview of vanadium and its related oxides are presented in the first two parts. Afterwards, the physical properties of binary and ternary vanadium oxides in single and mixed valence states are described such as their structural, optical, and electronic properties. Finally, the use of these vanadium oxides in photochemical processes for environmental applications is detailed, especially for the production of hydrogen by water splitting and the degradation of organic pollutants in water using photocatalytic and photo-Fenton processes. The scientific aim of such a review is to bring a comprehensive tool to understand the photochemical processes triggered by vanadium oxide based materials where the photo-induced properties are thoroughly discussed based on the detailed description of their intrinsic properties.

Highly Efficient Alkaline Water Splitting with Ru-Doped Co-V Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets as a Bifunctional Electrocatalyst

Active electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are decisive for achieving efficient energy conversion from electricity to hydrogen fuel through water electrolysis. In this study, tremella-like Ru-doped Co-V layered double hydroxide nanosheets on Ni Foam (Ru-CoV-LDH@NF) was fabricated by a one-pot solvothermal reaction. As-prepared Ru-CoV-LDH@NF, with a nominal Ru loading of around 51.6 μg cm^-2 exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic activity towards HER and OER in alkaline media. To accomplish a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 , it demands 32 mV and 230 mV overpotentials for HER and OER, respectively. The alkali electrolyzer utilizing Ru-CoV-LDH/NF as bifunctional electrocatalyst affords 10 mA cm^-2 electrolytic current density at an extremely low cell voltage of 1.50 V, showing excellent performance compared to a Pt/C-RuO₂ -based electrolyzer and many other bifunctional electrocatalyst-based ones. The incorporation of Ru changes the morphology of the resultant nanosheets to offer high electrochemical surface areas for electrocatalysis; at the same time, it significantly boosts the intrinsic HER/OER electrocatalytic activity. For HER, the energy barrier of the Volmer step is efficiently reduced upon Ru doping, whereas the Ru dopants optimize the absorption strength of *O intermediates to facilitate the OER process. This work offers a feasible means to optimize the Co-based hydroxide materials for improved electrocatalysis in overall water splitting.

Selective MOCVD synthesis of VO2 crystals on nanosharp Si structures

High-quality single VO₂ nanocrystals and ordered arrays of VO₂ nanorings were selectively synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) respectively on the tip apices and on the sidewall scallops.

Reconfigurable Multistate Optical Systems Enabled by VO2 Phase Transitions

Reconfigurable optical systems are the object of continuing, intensive research activities, as they hold great promise for realizing a new generation of compact, miniaturized, and flexible optical devices. However, current reconfigurable systems often tune only a single state variable triggered by an external stimulus, thus, leaving out many potential applications. Here we demonstrate a reconfigurable multistate optical system enabled by phase transitions in vanadium dioxide (VO₂). By controlling the phase-transition characteristics of VO₂ with simultaneous stimuli, the responses of the optical system can be reconfigured among multiple states. In particular, we show a quadruple-state dynamic plasmonic display that responds to both temperature tuning and hydrogen-doping. Furthermore, we introduce an electron-doping scheme to locally control the phase-transition behavior of VO₂, enabling an optical encryption device encoded by multiple keys. Our work points the way toward advanced multistate reconfigurable optical systems, which substantially outperform current optical devices in both breadth of capabilities and functionalities.

Synthesis of Self-Assembled Randomly Oriented VO2 Nanowires on a Glass Substrate by a Spin Coating Method

Randomly oriented vanadium dioxide (VO₂) nanowires were produced on a glass substrate by spin coating from a cosolvent. SEM studies reveal that highly dense VO₂ nanowires were grown at an annealing temperature of 400 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides evidence of the high crystallinity of the VO₂ nanowires-embedded VO₂ thin films on the glass substrate at 400 °C. Characterization by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) confirmed the formation of VO₂ nanowires. The optical band gap of the nanowires-embedded VO₂ thin films was also calculated from the transmittance data to be 2.65-2.70 eV. The growth mechanism of the solution-processed semiconducting VO₂ nanowires was proposed based on both solvent selection and annealing temperature. Finally, the solar water splitting ability of the VO₂ nanowires-embedded VO₂ thin films was demonstrated in a photoelectrochemical cell (PEC).

Natural Polyphenol-Vanadium Oxide Nanozymes for Synergistic Chemodynamic/Photothermal Therapy

The selection of suitable nanozymes with easy synthesis, tumor specificity, multifunction, and high therapeutics is meaningful for tumor therapy. Herein, a facile one-step assembly approach was employed to successfully prepare a novel kind of natural polyphenol tannic acid (TA) hybrid with mixed valence vanadium oxide nanosheets (TA@VO_x NSs). In this system, VO_x is assembled with TA through metal-phenolic coordination interaction to both introduce superior peroxidase-like activity and high near infrared (NIR) absorption owing to partial reduction of vanadium from V⁵⁺ to V⁴⁺ . The presence of mixed valence vanadium oxide in TA@VO_x NSs is proved to be the key for the catalytic reaction of hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) to ^. OH, and the corresponding catalytic mechanism of H₂ O₂ by TA@VO_x NSs is proposed. Benefitting from such peroxidase-like activity of TA@VO_x NSs, the overproduced H₂ O₂ of the tumor microenvironment allows the realization of tumor-specific chemodynamic therapy (CDT). As a valid supplement to CDT, the NIR absorption enables TA@VO_x NSs to have NIR light-mediated conversion ability for photothermal therapy (PTT) of cancers. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that TA@VO_x NSs can effectively inhibit the growth of tumors by synergistic CDT/PTT. These results offer a promising way to develop novel vanadium oxide-based nanozymes for enhanced synergistic tumor-specific treatment.

Vanadium based carbide-oxide heterogeneous V2O5@V2C nanotube arrays for high-rate and long-life lithium-sulfur batteries

Due to their ultra-high theoretical energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness, lithium-sulfur batteries have become a potentially strong competitor for next-generation energy storage devices. The search for a host material that can effectively anchor sulfur to a cathode to solve the adverse effects of the shuttle effect on batteries has become a research hotspot in the academic world. Here, we propose a three-dimensional heterostructure of V₂O₅ nanotube arrays vertically grown on V₂C-MXenes as a sulfur-supporting host material for the cathode of lithium-sulfur batteries. Through first-principles calculations, we found that V₂O₅@V₂C exhibits an extreme adsorption capacity for polysulfides. Besides, thanks to the excellent catalytic performance of V₂O₅ for oxidation reactions, the conversion reaction potential of polysulfides to Li₂S and Li₂S₂ is significantly reduced, and the shuttle effect of lithium-sulfur batteries is effectively suppressed. Also, the larger specific surface area and tubular structure of the composite host material can increase the sulfur loading of the cathode while ensuring the stability of the electrode structure. The V₂O₅@V₂C/S electrode exhibits higher initial capacity (1173 mA h g^-1 at 0.2C), longer cycle life (1000 cycles with 0.047% decay per period), and higher sulfur loading (8.4 mg cm^-2). We believe that this work can provide a reference for the design of cathode host materials for lithium-sulfur batteries with long cycle life.

Electron density modulation of a metallic GeSb monolayer by pnictogen doping for excellent hydrogen evolution

The catalyst assisted water-splitting method as an eco-friendly and cleaner pathway for energy generation has gained much interest in recent times. In this regard, numerous two-dimensional electrocatalysts such as mono/binary compounds synthesized from group IV, III-V and V elements with compatible activity towards hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, oxygen reduction and CO₂ reduction have been reported. Motivated by the novel approach of material design and the need for better and cheaper electrocatalytic materials, we have investigated the ground state properties of the GeSb monolayer using state-of-the-art density functional theory. The computed electronic properties reveal the metallic nature of the pristine GeSb monolayer, indicating its potential for utilization as an electrocatalyst. The site-dependent catalytic response of the GeSb monolayer indicates that the Sb-site is more sensitive towards hydrogen adsorption amongst the considered sites. The computed adsorption and Gibbs free energies follow the trend of E < E < E. Finally, we have investigated the role of arsenic (As) and bismuth (Bi) doping on the catalytic activity of the GeSb monolayer. We notice that the electron density modulation occurs at the Sb-site due to incorporation of substitutional doping which results in a 72% enhancement in the catalytic activity of the monolayer on As substitution. The present study envisages that the electron density modulation can be utilized as a pathway for tailoring the catalytic activity of a system for the hydrogen evolution reaction.
