Abstract
Building bridges among different types of catalysts to construct cascades is a highly worthwhile pursuit, such as chemo-, bio-, and chemo-bio cascade reactions. Cascade reactions can improve the reaction efficiency and selectivity while reducing steps of separation and purification, thereby promoting the development of "green chemistry". However, compatibility issues in cascade reactions pose significant constraints on the development of this field, particularly concerning the compatibility of diverse catalyst types, reaction conditions, and reaction rates. Metal-organic framework micro/nano reactors (MOF-MNRs) are porous crystalline materials formed by the self-assembly coordination of metal sites and organic ligands, possessing a periodic network structure. Due to the uniform pore size with the capability of controlling selective transfer of substances as well as protecting active substances and the organic-inorganic parts providing reactive microenvironment, MOF-MNRs have attracted significant attention in cascade reactions in recent years. In this Perspective, we first discuss how to address compatibility issues in cascade reactions using MOF-MNRs, including structural design and synthetic strategies. Then we summarize the research progress on MOF-MNRs in various cascade reactions. Finally, we analyze the challenges facing MOF-MNRs and potential breakthrough directions and opportunities for the future.

Cobalt isatin-Schiff-base derivative of MOF as a heterogeneous multifunctional bio-photocatalyst for sunlight-induced tandem air oxidation condensation process. Sci Rep 2023; 13:5115. Abstract
A sunlight-induced tandem air oxidation-condensation of alcohols with ortho-substituted anilines or malononitrile for the efficient synthesis of benz-imidazoles/-oxazoles/-thiazoles, or benzylidene malononitrile catalyzed by Co-isatin-Schiff-base-MIL-101(Fe) as a heterogeneous multifunctional bio-photocatalyst is reported. In these reactions, Co-isatin-Schiff-base-MIL-101(Fe) acts both as a photocatalyst, and a Lewis acid to catalyze the reaction of the in-situ formed aldehydes with o-substituted anilines or malononitrile. A significant decrease in the band gap energy and an increase in the characteristic emission of MIL-101(Fe) after functionalization with cobalt Schiff-base according to the DRS analysis and fluorescence spectrophotometry, respectively, indicate that the photocatalytic effectiveness of the catalyst is associated primarily to the synergetic influence of Fe-O cluster and Co-Schiff-base. EPR results obviously pointed out that Co-isatin-Schiff-base-MIL-101(Fe) is capable of creating 1O2 and O2⋅- as active oxygen species under visible light irradiation. Using an inexpensive catalyst, sunlight irradiation, air as a cost-effective and abundant oxidant, and a low amount of the catalyst with recoverability and durability in ethanol as a green solvent, make this methodology as an environmentally friendly process with energy-saving organic synthetic strategies. Furthermore, Co-isatin-Schiff-base-MIL-101(Fe) displays excellent photocatalytic antibacterial activity under sunlight irradiation against E. coli, S. aureus and S. pyogenes. Based on our knowledge, this is the first report of using a bio-photocatalyst for the synthesis of the target molecules.

Abstract
Using cyclodextrin and chitosan that are bio-based compounds, a novel bi-functional catalytic composite is designed, in which metal-organic framework encapsulated phosphomolybdic acid was incorporated in a dual chitosan-cyclodextrin nanosponge bead. The composite was characterized via XRD, TGA, ICP, BET, NH3-TPD, FTIR, FE-SEM/EDS, elemental mapping analysis and its catalytic activity was examined in alcohol oxidation and cascade alcohol oxidation-Knoevenagel condensation reaction. It was found that the designed catalyst that possess both acidic feature and redox potential could promote both reactions in aqueous media at 55 °C and various substrates with different electronic features could tolerate the aforementioned reactions to furnish the products in 75-95% yield. Furthermore, the catalyst could be readily recovered and recycled for five runs with slight loss of the catalytic activity. Notably, in this composite the synergism between the components led to high catalytic activity, which was superior to each component. In fact, the amino groups on the chitosan served as catalysts, while cyclodextrin nanosponge mainly acted as a phase transfer agent. Moreover, measurement of phosphomolybdic acid leaching showed that its incorporation in metal-organic framework and bead structure could suppress its leaching, which is considered a drawback for this compound. Other merits of this bi-functional catalyst were its simplicity, use of bio-based compounds and true catalysis, which was proved via hot filtration.

Abstract
A porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (COF), namely Porph-UOZ-COF (UOZ stands for the University of Zabol), has been designed and prepared via the condensation reaction of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (DHPP) with 1,4-benzenediboronic acid (DBBA), under the solvothermal condition. The solid was characterized by spectroscopic, microscopic, and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. The resultant multifunctional COF revealed an outstanding performance in catalyzing a one-pot tandem selective benzylic C-H photooxygenation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction in the absence of additives or metals under visible-LED-light irradiation. Notably, the catalytic activity of the COF was superior to individual organic counterparts and the COF was both stable and reusable for four consecutive runs. The present approach illustrates the potential of COFs as promising metal-free (photo) catalysts for the development of tandem reactions.

Abstract
Using boehmite as an available and low-cost natural compound, a bi-functional catalytic composite is prepared through vinyl-functionalization of boehmite, followed by polymerization with the as-prepared bis-vinylimidazolium bromide ionic liquid and supporting of phosphotungstic acid. The catalyst was characterized via ICP, XRD, TGA, FTIR, SEM/EDS and elemental mapping analysis and applied for promoting alcohol oxidation reaction and one-pot tandem alcohol oxidation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction in aqueous media under mild reaction condition. The results indicated high catalytic activity of the catalyst for both reactions. This protocol showed high generality and aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic alcohols could be applied as substrates to furnish the corresponding products in high to excellent yields. Furthermore, hot filtration test confirmed true heterogeneous nature of the catalysis. The catalyst could also be recovered readily and reused for at least five runs of the reaction with low loss of the activity and phosphotungstic acid leaching upon each run.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal halide perovskites are currently under much investigation due to their unique properties and applications. Herein, an innovative strategy has been developed combining an iron-porphyrin MOF, PCN-222(Fe), and an in situ-grown CsCu2I3 nontoxic lead-free halide perovskite based on an earth-abundant metal that becomes incorporated within the MOF channels [CsCu2I3@PCN-222(Fe)]. Encapsulation was designed to decrease and control the particle size and increase the stability of CsCu2I3. The hybrid materials were characterized by various techniques including FE-SEM, elemental mapping and line scanning EDX, TEM, PXRD, UV-Vis DRS, BET surface area, XPS, and photoemission measurements. Hybrid CsCu2I3@PCN-222(Fe) materials were examined as heterogeneous multifunctional (photo)catalysts for copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) and one-pot selective photo-oxidation/Knoevenagel condensation cascade reaction. Interestingly, CsCu2I3@PCN-222(Fe) outperforms not only its individual components CsCu2I3 and PCN-222(Fe) but also other reported (photo)catalysts for these transformations. This is attributed to cooperation and synergistic effects of the PCN-222(Fe) host and CsCu2I3 nanocrystals. To understand the catalytic and photocatalytic mechanisms, control and inhibition experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, and time-resolved phosphorescence were performed, revealing the main role of active species of Cu(I) in the click reaction and the superoxide ion (O2•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) in the photocatalytic reaction.

Abstract
Three new NiII/CoII-metal organic frameworks were self-assembled by the reaction of C3 symmetric 1,3,5-tribenzoic acid (H3BTC) and 2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (4-TPT) ligands and NiII/CoII salts under solvothermal conditions. Isomorphous MOF1 and MOF2 exhibit a 3D pillar-layer framework based on binuclear M2(OH)(COO)2 units connected by tritopic BTC3- and 4-TPT ligands with a novel (3,5)-connected topology net. MOF3 displays a 3-fold interpenetrated 3D network exhibiting a (3,4)-connected topology net. The porous MOF3 can reversibly take up I2. The activated MOFs contain both Lewis acid (NiII center) and basic (uncoordinated pyridyl or carboxylic groups) sites, and act as bifunctional acid-base catalysts. The catalytic measurements demonstrate that the activated MOF3 exhibits good activities for benzyl alcohol oxidation and the Knoevenagel reaction and can be recycled and reused for at least four cycles without losing its structural integrity and high catalytic activity. Thus, the catalytic properties for the oxidation-Knoevenagel cascade reaction have also been studied.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline porous materials that have been actively used for several industrial and synthetic applications. MOFs are spatially and geometrically extrapolated coordination polymers with intriguing properties such as tunable porosity and dimensionality. In terms of their catalytic efficiency, MOFs combine the easy recoverability of heterogeneous catalysts with the increased selectivity of biological catalysts. It is therefore not surprising that a lot of work on optimizing MOF catalysts for organic transformations has been carried out over the past decade. In this review, recent developments in MOF catalysis are summarized, with special attention being paid to C-C, C-N, and C-O coupling reactions. The influence of pore size, pore environment, and load on catalytic activity is described. Post-synthetic stabilization techniques and host-guest interactions in caged MOF scaffolds are detailed. Mechanistic aspects pertaining to the use of MOFs in asymmetric heterogeneous catalysis are highlighted and categorized.

Abstract
Great attention has been given to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived solid bases because of their attractive structure and catalytic performance in various organic reactions. The extraordinary skeleton structure of MOFs provides many possibilities for incorporation of diverse basic functionalities, which is unachievable for conventional solid bases. The past decade has witnessed remarkable advances in this vibrant research area; however, MOFs for heterogeneous basic catalysis have never been reviewed until now. Therefore, a review summarizing MOFs-derived base catalysts is highly expected. In this review, we present an overview of the recent progress in MOFs-derived solid bases covering preparation, characterization, and catalytic applications. In the preparation section, the solid bases are divided into two categories, namely, MOFs with intrinsic basicity and MOFs with modified basicity. The basicity can originate from either metal sites or organic ligands. Different approaches used for generation of basic sites are included, and each approach is described with representative examples. The fundamental principles for the design and fabrication of MOFs with basic functionalities are featured. In the characterization section, experimental techniques and theoretical calculations employed for characterization of basic MOFs are summarized. Some representive experimental techniques, such as temperature-programmed desorption of CO2 (CO2-TPD) and infrared (IR) spectra of different probing molecules, are covered. Following preparation and characterization, the catalytic applications of MOFs-derived solid bases are dealt with. These solid bases have potential to catalyze some well-known "base-catalyzed reactions" like Knoevenagel condensation, aldol condensation, and Michael addition. Meanwhile, in contrast to conventional solid bases, MOFs show some different catalytic properties due to their special structural and surface properties. Remarkably, characteristic features of MOFs-derived solid bases are described by comparing with conventional inorganic counterparts, keeping in mind the current opportunities and challenges in this field.

Abstract
A novel one-pot aerobic oxidation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction system was developed employing a Cu(ii)/amine bifunctional, basic metal-organic framework (MOF) as the catalyst. The sequential aerobic alcohol oxidation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction was efficiently promoted by the Cu3TATAT MOF catalyst in the absence of basic additives. The benzylidenemalononitrile product was produced in high yield and selectivity from an inexpensive benzyl alcohol starting material under an oxygen atmosphere. The role of the basic functionality was studied to demonstrate its role in the aerobic oxidation and Knoevenagel condensation reactions. The reaction progress was monitored in order to identify the reaction intermediate and follow the accumulation of the desired product. Lastly, results showed that the yield was not significantly compromised by the reuse of a batch of catalyst, even after more than five cycles.

Abstract
A series of 3D oxalate-bridged ruthenium-based coordination polymers with the formula of {[ZII(bpy)3][MIRu(C2O4)3]}n (ZII = Zn2+ (1), Cu2+ (3, 4), Ru2+ (5, 6), Os2+ (7, 8); MI = Li+, Na+; bpy = 2,2’-bipyridine) and {[ZnII(bpy)3](H2O)[LiRu(C2O4)3]}n (2) has been synthesized at room temperature through a self-assembly reaction in aqueous media and characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, infrared and diffuse reflectance UV–Vis spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The crystal structures of all compounds comprise chiral 3D honeycomb-like polymeric nets of the srs-type, which possess triangular anionic cages where [ZII(bpy)3]2+ cationic templates are selectively embedded. Structural analysis reveals that the electronic configuration of the cationic guests is affected by electrostatic interaction with the anionic framework. Moreover, the MLCT bands gaps values for 1–8 can be tuned in a rational way by judicious choice of [ZII(bpy)3]2+ guests. The 3D host-guest polymeric architectures can be used as self-supported heterogeneous photocatalysts for the reductive splitting of water, exhibiting photocatalytic activity for the evolution of H2 under UV light irradiation.

Abstract
Cascade or tandem reactions where two or more individual reactions are carried out in one pot constitute a clear example of process intensification, targeting the maximization of spatial and temporal productivity with mobilization of minimum resources. In the case of catalytic reactions, cascade processes require bi-/multifunctional catalysts that contain different classes of active sites. Herein, we show that the features and properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) make these solids very appropriate materials for the development of catalysts for cascade reactions. Due to composition and structure, MOFs can incorporate different types of sites at the metal nodes, organic linkers, or at the empty internal pores, allowing the flexible design and synthesis of multifunctional catalysts. After some introductory sections on the relevance of cascade reactions from the point of view of competitiveness, sustainability, and environmental friendliness, the main part of the text provides a comprehensive review of the literature reporting the use of MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts for cascade reactions including those that combine in different ways acid/base, oxidation/reduction, and metal-organic centers. The final section summarizes the current state of the art, indicating that the development of a first commercial synthesis of a high-added-value fine chemical will be a crucial milestone in this area.
