Abstract
A water-soluble polymeric pyrene-based polythioacetal (PTA-Py) with thioacetal units in the main chain is simply synthesized by direct polycondensation of 3, 6-dioxa-1, 8-octanedithiol, 1-pyrene formaldehyde, and mPEG2k-SH. The probe PTA-Py shows a good fluorescence response to Hg2+ ions due to the Hg2+-promoted deprotection reaction of thioacetal groups to regenerate the original 1-pyrene formaldehyde compound. After adding Hg2+ to the PTA-Py solution, the fluorescence intensity (FI) gradually increases with increasing concentrations of Hg2+. Compared with other metal ions, the probe exhibits high sensitivity, good selectivity, and rapid response to Hg2+. The low detection limits are 12.3 nm in ethanol-PBS buffer and 13.3 nm in water, respectively. The results imply that the simply synthesized water-soluble polymeric probe had potential applications in the rapid detection of Hg2+ ions in aqueous solutions. Moreover, the polymeric PTA-Py shows high sensitivity for CH3Hg+ with detection limits of 26.5 nm in ethanol/PBS buffer. In addition, PTA-Py can efficiently detect Hg2+ ions in HeLa cells. The results demonstrate that a valuable method is developed for biocompatible polymeric sensors for Hg2+ ions in biological and environmental samples.

Abstract
An anionic mercury(II) complex of 2-(anthracen-9-ylmethylene)-N-phenylhydrazine carbothioamide (HATU) and two isomers of a neutral mercury(II) complex of the anion of the same ligand (ATU) were reported. The anionic complex [Hg(HATU)2Cl2]·CH2Cl2 had a monodentate HATU ligand (a neutral form of the ligand) and chloride ligands. The two conformational isomers were of the neutral mercury(II) complex Hg(ATU)2·2DMF. The two isomers were from the E or Z geometry of the ligands across the conjugated C=N-N=C-N scaffold of the coordinated ligand. The two isomers of the complex were independently prepared and characterized. The spectroscopic properties of the isomers in solution were studied by 1H NMR as well as fluorescence spectroscopy. Facile conversion of the E-isomer to the Z-isomer in solution was observed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Z-isomer of the complex was stable compared to the E-isomer by an energy of 14.35 kJ/mol; whereas, E isomer of the ligand was more stable than Z isomer by 8.37 KJ/mol. The activation barrier for the conversion of the E-isomer to the Z-isomer of the ligand was 167.37 kJ/mol. The role of the mercury ion in the conversion of the E-form to the Z-form was discussed. The mercury complex [Hg(HATU)2Cl2]·CH2Cl2 had the E-form of the ligand. Distinct photophysical features of these mercury complexes were presented.

Abstract
Azulene is a bicyclic aromatic chromophore that absorbs in the visible region. Its absorption maximum undergoes a hypsochromic shift if a conjugated electron-withdrawing group is introduced at the C1 position. This fact can be exploited in the design of a colorimetric chemodosimeter that functions by the transformation of a dithioacetal to the corresponding aldehyde upon exposure to Hg2+ ions. This chemodosimeter exhibits good chemoselectivity over other metal cations, and responds with an unambiguous colour change clearly visible to the naked eye. Its synthesis is concise and its ease of use makes it appropriate in resource-constrained environments, for example in determing mercury content of drinking water sources in the developing world.

Abstract
Reported herein is the sensitive and selective cyclodextrin-promoted fluorescence detection of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and cumene (BTEXC) fuel components in contaminated snow samples collected from several locations in the state of Rhode Island. This detection method uses cyclodextrin as a supramolecular scaffold to promote analyte-specific, proximity-induced fluorescence modulation of a high-quantum-yield fluorophore, which leads to unique fluorescence responses for each cyclodextrin-analyte-fluorophore combination investigated and enables unique pattern identifiers for each analyte using linear discriminant analysis (LDA). This detection method operates with high levels of sensitivity (sub-micromolar detection limits), selectivity (100% differentiation between structurally similar compounds, such as ortho-, meta-, and para-xylene isomers), and broad applicability (for different snow samples with varying chemical composition, pH, and electrical conductivity). The high selectivity, sensitivity, and broad applicability of this method indicate significant potential in the development of practical detection devices for aromatic toxicants in complex environments.

Abstract
Self-assembly of suitable molecular building blocks is an efficient and convenient approach to generate nanomaterials with various morphologies and functions. Moreover, understanding the nature of molecules and controlling factors of their self-assembly process is crucial in fundamental aspects of molecular self-assembly which provide insights into the design of new assemblies with functional nano-architectures. To this end, the present study reports water induced self-assembled multifaceted morphology formation and the plausible pathway of the morphology transformation of a single poly(aryl ether) dendron amphiphile 1(D). In THF, 1(D) self-assembles into helical fibers. However, with an increase in the water fraction in its THF solution, the morphology changes to nanorods through an intermediate scroll-up pathway of exfoliated fibers. The nanorod formation and transformation of 1(D) are investigated using various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques, which indicate that it has highly ordered multilayered arrays of 1(D) molecules. Finally, these multilayered arrays of 1(D) nanorods are exploited for constructing a model light-harvesting system via the incorporation of small quantities of two newly designed BODIPY based molecules as energy acceptors and 1(D) as an antenna chromophore.

Abstract
An aldoxime containing fluorescent probe based on vinylpydine-appended triphenylamine-BODIPY has been designed and used for hypochlorite detection. OX-PPA-BODIPY was developed by introducing an aldoxime group into the 2-position of BODIPY, which can be used for the detection of hypochlorite with a sharp color change from pink to green. The attachment of 4-vinylpyridine moiety to triphenylamine-BODIPY constructs a fluorogen with desirable conjugated system. The probe, which displays extremely weak fluorescence owing to the CN isomerization mechanism at 2-position of BODIPY, responds to HClO/ClO- through a dramatic enhancement of its fluorescence intensity. This new probe, a naked-eye visible and fluorometric chemodosimeter, exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity toward hypochlorite over other reactive oxygen species (ROS) and anions. The detection is accompanied by a 20-fold increase in fluorescent intensity (ΦF from 0.02 to 0.43). The detection limit of the probe for hypochlorite is 7.37×10-7M. Moreover, OX-PPA-BODIPY can be used to detect hypochlorite in real water samples.

Abstract
Inclusion complex between N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine (NPN) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was studied by FT-IR, (1)H and 2D NMR, XRD, FT-Raman, SEM and DSC techniques. The formation of 1:1 stoichiometric inclusion complex of NPN with β-CD was proposed based on the Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Molecular docking study. The molecular encapsulation of host-guest inclusion complex based on simple chemosensor has high selectivity and sensitivity for the determination of Pd(2+) ion. Host-guest inclusion complex as a spectroscopic probe is used for the detection of transition metal cation Pd(2+). Coordination of this Pd(2+) with (NPN/β-CD) inclusion complex exhibited a noticeable color change in the solution state it used for naked-eye detection.
