Abstract
An efficient Cu-catalyzed annulation reaction of ketone oxime acetates with ortho-trifluoroacetyl anilines has been disclosed. With the developed protocol, a series of 4-trifluoromethyl quinolines were obtained in good to excellent yields (58-99%) under redox-neutral conditions. The protocol also could be extended to ferrocene-based ketone oxime acetates for the construction of ferrocene-substituted fluorine-containing quinolines.

Abstract
A macrocycle that integrates three ferrocene-pyrene dyads in a triangular C2-symmetric arrangement is synthesised as a racemate in a simple one-pot approach. Crystal structural analysis reveals two enantiomeric conformers that pack alternatingly via π-π stacking and interconvert dynamically in solution. Electrochemical investigations indicate weak electrostatic interactions between Fc groups upon oxidation to a mixed valence triangle.

Abstract
Ion-pair recognition has emerged from cation and anion recognition and become a diverse and active field in its own right. The last decade has seen significant advances in receptor design in terms of the types of binding motifs, understanding of cooperativity and increase in complexity from heteroditopic to multitopic receptors. As a result, attention has turned to applying this knowledge to the rational design of ion-pair receptors for applications in salt solubilisation and extraction, membrane transport and sensing. This Review highlights recent progress and developments in the design and applications of heteroditopic and multitopic receptors for ion-pair recognition.

Abstract
Chemoselective palladium-catalyzed arylation of polyamines with 6-bromoquinoline has been explored to prepare chelators for the detection of metal cations in aqueous media. The introduction of a single aromatic moiety into non-protected polyamine molecules was achieved using the commercially available Pd(dba)2/BINAP precatalyst to afford nitrogen chelators, in which the aromatic signalling unit is directly attached to the polyamine residue. Water-soluble receptors were then synthesized using N-alkylation of these polyamines by hydrophilic coordinating residues. By combining rich photophysical properties of the 6-aminoquinoline unit with a high coordination affinity of chelating polyamines and a hydrophilic character of carboxamido-substituted phosphonic acid diesters in a single molecular device, we synthesized chemosensor 5 for selective double-channel (UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies) detection of CuII ions in aqueous media at physiological levels. This receptor is suitable for the analysis of drinking water and fabrication of paper test strips for the naked-eye detection of CuII ions under UV-light. By increasing the number of donor sites we also obtained chemosensor 6 which is efficient for the detection of HgII ions. Moreover, chemosensor 6 is also suitable for multiple detection of metal ions because it chelates not only HgII but also CuII and ZnII ions displaying different responses of emission in the presence of these three cations.

Abstract
A low-energy collision induced dissociation (CID) (low-energy CID) approach that can determine both activation energy and activation entropy has been used to evaluate gas-phase binding energies of host-guest (H-G) complexes of a heteroditopic hemicryptophane cage host (Zn (II)@1) with a series of biologically relevant guests. In order to use this approach, preliminary calibration of the effective temperature of ions undergoing resonance excitation is required. This was accomplished by employing blackbody infrared radiative dissociation (BIRD) which allows direct measurement of activation parameters. Activation energies and pre-exponential factors were evaluated for more than 10 H-G complexes via the use of low-energy CID. The relatively long residence time of the ions inside the linear ion trap (maximum of 60 s) allowed the study of dissociations with rates below 1 s-1 . This possibility, along with the large size of the investigated ions, ensures the fulfilment of rapid energy exchange (REX) conditions and, as a consequence, accurate application of the Arrhenius equation. Compared with the BIRD technique, low-energy CID allows access to higher effective temperatures, thereby permitting one to probe more endothermic decomposition pathways. Based on the measured activation parameters, guests bearing a phosphate (-OPO3 2- ) functional group were found to bind more strongly with the encapsulating cage than those having a sulfonate (-SO3 - ) group; however, the latter ones make stronger bonds than those with a carboxylate (-CO2 - ) group. In addition, it was observed that the presence of trimethylammonium (-N(CH3 )3 + ) or phenyl groups in the guest's structure improves the strength of H-G interactions. The use of this technique is very straightforward, and it does not require any instrumental modifications. Thus, it can be applied to other H-G chemistry studies where comparison of bond dissociation energies is of paramount importance.

Abstract
The self-assembly of ligands of different geometries with metal ions gives rise to metallosupramolecular architectures of differing structural types. The rotational flexibility of ferrocene allows for conformational diversity, and, as such, self-assembly processes with 1,1'-disubstituted ferrocene ligands could lead to a variety of interesting architectures. Herein, we report a small family of three bis-bidentate 1,1'-disubstituted ferrocene ligands, functionalized with either 2,2'-bipyridine or 2-pyridyl-1,2,3-triazole chelating units. The self-assembly of these ligands with the (usually) four-coordinate, diamagnetic metal ions Cu(I), Ag(I), and Pd(II) was examined using a range of techniques including 1H and DOSY NMR spectroscopies, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory calculations. Additionally, the electrochemical properties of these redox-active metallosupramolecular assemblies were examined using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The copper(I) complexes of the 1,1'-disubstituted ferrocene ligands were found to be coordination polymers, while the silver(I) and palladium(II) complexes formed discrete [1 + 1] or [2 + 2] metallomacrocyclic architectures.

Abstract
The synthesis and crystal structures with alkali halides of a ditopic benzo-15-crown-5 bis-urea receptor have been presented. In addition, the anion binding properties of and its alkali metal complexes in solution are presented. A comprehensive single-crystal X-ray crystallographic study of , all together 13 crystal structures, including the ion pair complexes with NaCl, NaBr, NaI, KF, KCl, KBr, KI, RbF, RbCl, and RbI, give a detailed view of how behaves in the solid-state with different alkali halides depending on the size of the cation and anion. In the solid-state forms a 1 : 1 complex with a sodium cation and the anion is complexed as a contact (NaCl) or a separate ion pair (NaBr, NaI). With larger potassium and rubidium cations assembles into a 2 : 1 complex and forms a separated ion pair complex with the anion. Reflecting the crystal structures the forms a 1 : 1 complex with Na(+) in solution, and a 2 : 1 complex with K(+), which were verified by Job's plot analysis in 4 : 1 CDCl3/dimethyl sulfoxide. The binding strength of the monomeric [·Na](+) and the dimeric [2·K](+) toward chloride, bromide and iodide anions was studied by (1)H NMR titrations in 4 : 1 CDCl3/DMSO, and a clear turn-on effect of the cation complexation compared to the neutral receptor alone (Ka with for Cl(-), Br(-) and I(-) being 832, 174 and 32 M(-1), respectively) was observed. The monomeric [·Na](+) binds chloride 9, bromide 8, and iodide 12 times stronger than , while for the dimeric [2K](+) the corresponding increase in binding is 51 (Cl(-)), 84 (Br(-)), and 22 (I(-)) times with the same stoichiometric ratios as observed for the ion pair complexes in the solid-state.

Abstract
Synthesis and ion-pair complexation properties of novel ditopic bis-urea receptors based on dibenzo[21]crown-7 (R(1) ) and dibenzo[24]crown-8 (R(2) ) scaffolds have been studied in the solid state, solution, and gas phase. In a 4:1 CDCl3 /[D6 ]DMSO solution, both receptors clearly show positive heterotropic cooperativity toward halide anions when complexed with Rb(+) or Cs(+) , with the halide affinity increasing in order I(-) <Br(-) <Cl(-) . In solution, the rubidium complexes of both receptors have higher halide affinities compared to the caesium complexes. However, Rb(+) and Cs(+) complexes of R(2) show stronger affinities toward all the studied anions compared to the corresponding cationic complexes of R(1) . Similar selectivity of the receptors toward the studied ion pairs was also observed also in the gas phase by competition experiments with mass spectrometry. A total of eight crystal structures with different rubidium and caesium halides and oxyanions were obtained in addition to the crystal structure of R(2) ⋅BaCl2 . The selectivity observed in solution and in the gas phase is explainable by the conformational differences observed in the crystal structures of ion-pair complexes with R(1) and R(2) . In the solid state, R(1) has an open conformation due to the asymmetric crown-ether scaffold, whereas R(2) has a compact, folded conformation. Computational studies of the ion-pair complexes of R(2) show that the interaction energies of the complexes increase in the order CsI<CsBr<CsCl<RbCl, supporting the selectivity observed in solution and the gas-phase.

Self-assembled copper(II) metallacycles derived from asymmetric Schiff base ligands: efficient hosts for ADP/ATP in phosphate buffer. Dalton Trans 2015; 44:17152-65. Abstract
Novel asymmetric Schiff base ligands 2-{[3-(3-hydroxy-1-methyl-but-2-enylideneamino)-2,4,6-trimethylphenylimino]-methyl}-phenol (H2L(1)) and 1-{[3-(3-hydroxy-1-methyl-but-2-enylideneamino)-2,4,6-trimethylphenylimino]-methyl}-naphthalen-2-ol (H2L(2)) possessing dissimilar N,O-chelating sites and copper(ii) metallacycles (CuL(1))4 (1) and (CuL(2))4 (2) based on these ligands have been described. The ligands and complexes have been thoroughly characterized by satisfactory elemental analyses, and spectral (IR, (1)H, (13)C NMR, ESI-MS, UV/vis) and electrochemical studies. Structures of H2L(2) and 1 have been unambiguously determined by X-ray single crystal analyses. The crystal structure of H2L(2) revealed the presence of two distinct N,O-chelating sites on dissimilar cores (naphthalene and β-ketoaminato groups) offering a diverse coordination environment. Metallacycles 1 and 2 having a cavity created by four Cu(ii) centres coordinated in a homo- and heteroleptic fashion with respective ligands act as efficient hosts for adenosine-5'-diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) respectively, over other nucleoside polyphosphates (NPPs). The disparate sensitivity of these metallacycles toward ADP and ATP has been attributed to the size of the ligands assuming diverse dimensions and spatial orientations. These are attuned for π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions suitable for different guest molecules under analogous conditions, metallacycle 1 offers better orientation for ADP, while 2 for ATP. The mechanism of the host-guest interaction has been investigated by spectral and electrochemical studies and supported by molecular docking studies.
