Abstract
With increasing demand for public security and environmental protection, it is highly desirable to develop strategies to identify trace explosives (e. g., 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT)). Herein, we report novel photonic crystal (PC)-based sensor chips for trace TNT detection by using amplification effect of PCs on fluorescence (FL) signals. The sensor chips are constructed by integrating silica nanoparticles (NPs) modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and fluorescein isothiocyanate isomer (FITC) and PC substrates. The amino groups on FITC-APTES-silica NPs can specifically bind with TNT molecules to form Meisenheimer complexes and strongly quench the FL signal of neighboring fluorophores FITC through Förster resonance energy transfer. PCs with matched PBG can amplify the FL signal of FITC-APTES-silica NPs about 24.4-fold and significantly improve sensitivity and resolution of trace TNT detection with the limit of detection of 0.23 nM. The PC-based sensor chips are stable, sensitive, and reliable TNT sensing platforms, showing great potential in homeland safety and environmental protection.

Abstract
According to 4H-chromenes importance, we synthesized a novel magnetic UiO-66 functionalized with 4,4′-diamino-2,2′-stilbenedisulfonic as an efficient and reusable solid acid catalyst for synthesizing 4H-chromene skeletons via a one-pot three components reaction in a green solvent. The structure of the synthesized catalyst was confirmed by various techniques including FT-IR, XRD, BET, TGA, TEM, EDX, and SEM, and also the product yields were obtained in 83–96% of yields for all the reactions and under mild conditions. The reported procedure presents an environmentally friendly approach for synthesizing a significant number of 4H-chromene derivatives. Correspondingly, MOF-based catalyst makes it easy to separate from reaction media and reuse in the next runs.

Abstract
It is crucial to determine and control the metronidazole (MET) ingredient in food and pharmaceuticals for human health and food safety. Even though many sensors have been previously reported to detect MET, there is still a need for a highly selective and sensitive, easy, fast, cost-effective sensor in this area. Herein, we report a fluorescent calix[4]arene derivative (PIMC) for highly selective and sensitive and facile and rapid MET detection based on fluorescence (FL) quenching. The highest FL quenching occurs when PIMC is exposed to MET solution at 400 nm (λex = 340). Owing to the quenching efficacy of MET linearly up to 5.5 × 104 nM was obtained a detection limit of 2.44 nM. Besides, interferences of other pharmaceuticals and ions on probe performance were investigated. The FL probe was successful in MET detection without the assistance of any separation techniques in a pharmaceutical sample (tablet) with an acceptable recovery of 101.3%. The applicability of the current probe as a paper-based sensor to MET detection has been successfully tested. As a result, the proposed probe presents a fast and suitable strategy to sensitive and selective detect MET and proves a good potential for practical applications, especially pharmaceutical preparations.

Abstract
The exploitation of carbon nanotube (CNT) and metal-organic framework (MOF) composite materials has been highly desirable in a number of applications. However, the construction of high dispersibility and stability CNT/MOF complex structures is still an enormous challenge. Herein, a novel assembly method is established for the construction of a CNT/Ni-MOF (0.1 CNT/MOF, 0.2 CNT/MOF, 0.3 CNT/MOF) interpenetrated structure by a solvothermal process. The MOFs can be robustly anchored on the surface of CNTs. Through a series of characterizations, the MOF can be comfortably integrated into the CNT fibers, which exhibits the enhancement of carrier mobility and fluorescence properties. The microwave absorption properties of the CNT/MOF are explored by a vector network analyzer. The 0.1 CNT/MOF has a maximum absorption of -9.2 dB at 18 GHz with a thickness of 5 mm, while the 0.2 CNT/MOF has a maximum absorption of -24.32 dB at 4.5 GHz with a thickness of 5 mm, a performance maximum. Therefore, the 0.2 CNT/MOF structures are potential candidates to ameliorate the microwave absorption properties.

Abstract
In the present paper, new functionalized UiO-67 metal-organic frameworks (MOF) which contain aromatic tagged groups such as phenyl, naphthyl, and anthracene have been synthesized, characterized, and used for sensing water-soluble amino acids. The results show that anthracene-tagged UiO-67-MOF is shown to act as a highly efficient and selective aqueous sensor for arginine over other water-soluble amino acids in nanoscale. Upon adding an increasing amount of arginine, PL bands of the anth-UiO-67 MOF quenched completely, while there is no perturbation in the PL bands for other amino acid observed. This MOF allows a selective ratiometric detection of arginine without any interference from other amino acids.

Abstract
The illegal use of explosives by terrorists and other criminals is an increasing issue in public spaces, such as airports, railway stations, highways, sports venues, theaters, and other large buildings. Security in these environments can be achieved by different means, including the installation of scanners and other analytical devices to detect ultra-small traces of explosives in a very short time-frame to be able to take action as early as possible to prevent the detonation of such devices. Unfortunately, an ideal explosive detection system still does not exist, which means that a compromise is needed in practice. Most detection devices lack the extreme analytical sensitivity, which is nevertheless necessary due to the low vapor pressure of nearly all explosives. In addition, the rate of false positives needs to be virtually zero, which is also very difficult to achieve. Here we present an immunosensor system based on kinetic competition, which is known to be very fast and may even overcome affinity limitation, which impairs the performance of many traditional competitive assays. This immunosensor consists of a monolithic glass column with a vast excess of immobilized hapten, which traps the fluorescently labeled antibody as long as no explosive is present. In the case of the explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), some binding sites of the antibody will be blocked, which leads to an immediate breakthrough of the labeled protein, detectable by highly sensitive laser-induced fluorescence with the help of a Peltier-cooled complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) camera. Liquid handling is performed with high-precision syringe pumps and chip-based mixing-devices and flow-cells. The system achieved limits of detection of 1 pM (1 ppt) of the fluorescent label and around 100 pM (20 ppt) of TNT. The total assay time is less than 8 min. A cross-reactivity test with 5000 pM solutions showed no signal by pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX). This immunosensor belongs to the most sensitive and fastest detectors for TNT with no significant cross-reactivity by non-related compounds. The consumption of the labeled antibody is surprisingly low: 1 mg of the reagent would be sufficient for more than one year of continuous biosensor operation.

Abstract
Nitroaromatic explosives, such as 2-4-6 trinitrotoluene (TNT) are dangerous materials that pose safety and environmental risks. Even though many sensors have been reported for the detection of nitroaromatic explosives, a facile, rapid, cost-effective sensor is still sought-after in the field. Here we demonstrate a facile and rapid method to synthesize a fluorescent metal-organic framework for the highly selective and sensitive detection of nitroaromatic explosives. Zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) is synthesized and enhanced with fluorescent 8-hydroxyquinoline zinc (ZnQ). The synthesized material shows visible colour changes upon exposure to TNT from ivory to light red. In addition, fluorescence quenching is noted under UV illumination when the ZnQ@ZIF-8 is exposed to TNT. The ZnQ@ZIF-8-coated paper sensors show the highest fluorescence quenching at an emission wavelength of 455 nm with TNT concentration as low as 1 ppm. Therefore, the proposed strategy not only offers a fast and convenient protocol for selective detection of TNT but also offers great potential in practical applications, especially for airport/railway security inspection and prevention of terrorist attacks.

Abstract
Precise analysis of explosives is important for environmental pollution evaluation and terrorist prevention. However, rapid assay of explosives with high selectivity and sensitivity remains difficult. Here, we show that the gold nanocluster-modified metal-organic frameworks are excellent optical probes for explosive detection. The nanoclusters exhibit enhanced luminescence and selectively respond toward 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene over other explosives with a detection limit of 5 nM and fast response within 1 min. The efficient assay is resulted from the framework-mediated cluster aggregation and TNT binding.

Abstract
In this work, we present novel kinds of γ-Fe2O3@SiO2-NH2-CMC/MOF5 and γ-Fe2O3@SiO2-NH2-CMC/IRMOF3 magnetic metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles which possess both magnetic characteristics and fluorescent properties. Here, [Zn4O(bdc)3] (MOF-5, bdc=1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) is a kind of shell. IRMOF3, a known MOF with a cubic topology prepared from Zn(NO3)2⋅4H2O and 2-amino-1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid, is another kind of shell which is attractive due to its highly porous, crystalline structure and the presence of non-coordinating amino groups on the benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) linker, which are amenable to post-synthetic modification. γ-Fe2O3@SiO2-NH2-CMC magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) could be prepared by covalent modification of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The structure of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles could be determined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra could be used for the characterisation of γ-Fe2O3@SiO2-NH2, γ-Fe2O3@SiO2-NH2-CMC, γ-Fe2O3@SiO2-NH2-CMC/MOF5, and γ-Fe2O3@SiO2-NH2-CMC/IRMOF3 nanoparticles. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of enrofloxacin (Enr) experiments exhibited that, for γ-Fe2O3@SiO2-NH2-CMC/IRMOF3, the best effects of adsorption could be obtained at pH 4 and 6, while elution conditions of 0.1mol L−1 NaOH and 1% sodium dodecyl sulfate could achieve the best elution effect. The addition of Tb3+ ions could sensitise the fluorescence of Enr. At the same time, via the addition of Tb3+ ions, coordination could occur between nanoparticles and Tb3+ ions, which could be verified by XPS.

Abstract
A new HfIV -based metal-organic framework with UiO-66 topology was synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method by using 3-methyl-4-phenylthieno[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2 MPTDC) as a ligand. The MOF material showed a high stability in a broad pH range (from pH 2 to pH 12) in an aqueous medium. The presence of hydrophobic methyl and phenyl substituents in the carboxylic acid ligand and strong Hf-O bond play crucial roles in its stability. The new MOF material was systematically characterized by various techniques such as XRPD, N2 sorption, thermogravimetric analyses and FT-IR spectroscopy. The photophysical properties of the MOF material were also examined by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence studies. It was observed that the blue fluorescence of the MOF material was selectively quenched in the presence of Fe3+ ion in pure aqueous medium. A mechanistic study disclosed that quenching occurs via a strong inner filter effect (IFE) arising from Fe3+ ion in aqueous medium. Interestingly, the fluorescence of the MOF material can be recovered by elimination of the IFE of Fe3+ ion via reduction of Fe3+ ion by ascorbic acid (AA). Based on the fluorescence recovery by AA, a MOF based on-off-on probe was developed for the sensing of Fe3+ ion and AA in aqueous medium. Inspired by this reversible sensing event, we demonstrate basic (NOT, OR, YES, INHIBIT and IMP) and higher integrated logic operations utilizing this fluorescent MOF. This MOF-based logic systems could be potentially used for next-generation logic-gate based analytical applications as well as for the detection and discrimination of targeted molecules in various complex domains.

Abstract
This study reports on a method for fluorometric aptasensing of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It is based on the interaction of dispersed (red) and agglomerated (blue) gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with a water-dispered terbium(III) based metal-organic framework (Tb-MOF). The dispersed AuNPs quench the emissions of the Tb-MOF, while the aggregated AuNPs have little effect. Under the condition of high salt concentration, the free aptamer against ATP does not stabilize the AuNPs against aggregation. This causes a color change from red to blue and weak quenching of the fluorescence of the Tb-MOF (with peaks at 489 nm and 544 nm after excitation at 290 nm). On addition of ATP, it will be bound by its aptamer to form a complex that is adsorbed on the AuNPs. This protects the AuNPs from salt-induced aggregation and the color (with a peak at 525 nm) remains red. The two fluorescence bands of the Tb-MOF are therefore suppressed by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between Tb-MOF and the dispersed AuNPs. Fluorescence drops linearly in the 50 nM to 10 μM ATP concentration range, and the detection limit is 23 nM. ATP analogs such as guanosine triphosphate, uridine triphosphate, cytidine triphosphate, adenosine monophosphate and cyclic adenosine monophosphate have no obvious interference. The method was successfully applied to the determination of ATP in (spiked) human plasma samples and gave satisfactory recoveries. Graphical abstract Schematic of a terbium-based metal-organic framework@gold nanoparticle system as a fluorometric probe for aptamer based determination of adenosine triphosphate. The dispersed gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) quench the fluorescence of the terbium-based metal-organic framework (Tb-MOF), while the aggregated AuNPs have little effect. In the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the aptamer-ATP complexes provide greater protection towards AuNPs than aptamer alone under high salt condition. Based on this, a novel Tb-MOF@AuNP platform is established for ATP detection.

Abstract
An overview of the current status of coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) pertaining to the field of energetic materials is provided. The explosive applications of MOFs are discussed from two aspects: one for detection of explosives, and the other for explosive desensitization. By virtue of their adjustable pore/cage sizes, high surface area, tunable functional sites, and rich host-guest chemistry, MOFs have emerged as promising candidates for both explosive sensing and desensitization. The challenges and perspectives in these two areas are thoroughly discussed, and the processing methods for practical applications are also discussed briefly.

Abstract
Schiff base organic compound (SOC) has been prepared as a tritopic chemosensor for selective sensing by fluorescence signalling towards ions like Al3+, F- and explosive molecule like TNP. In general, fluorescence like photophysical property has been used for selective detection of analyte where Al3+ and F- show turn-on fluorescence signal at different wavelengths (nm) however, quenching was found with TNP. As a consequence, the chemosensor has become a selective sensor for Al3+, F- and TNP. Reversibility of fluorescence responses for Al3+ and F- are observed in presence of ammonium nitrate and H+ respectively. Similar to the detection of TNP, the detection of explosive like NO3- salts is also essential from homeland security point of view. In the present work, the finding of reversible sequential fluorescence response can be promoted for fabrication of next generation AND-NOT-OR-NAND-XOR-XNOR-NOR based complex logic circuit which is applicable in photonics, security and other fields including inorganic and material science. In the case of TNP recognition, the pathway mainly depends on non-covalent interaction (quenching constant: 4.4 × 105 M-1) which is even better than the recently reported materials. Detection limit for Al3+, F- and TNP is 1 μM, 3 μM and 500 nM respectively. DFT-D3 has been carried out to explore the host⋯guest interaction along with the structure-property correlation of the present host-guest system. All three guest analytes have been detected inside the living cell at a certain level and in its consequence, the successful in vitro recognition ability of the SOCs inside human cell line HeLa has been explored too. In real time stepping, an easy to operate and an economically affordable pocket prototype has also been fabricated for on spot detection of TNP like explosive.

Abstract
Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) hold great promise for future biomedical applications because of their magnetic properties as well as other intrinsic properties such as low toxicity, colloidal stability, and surface engineering capability. Numerous related studies on iron oxide NPs have been conducted. Recent progress in nanochemistry has enabled fine control over the size, crystallinity, uniformity, and surface properties of iron oxide NPs. This review examines various synthetic approaches and surface engineering strategies for preparing naked and functional iron oxide NPs with different physicochemical properties. Growing interest in designed and surface-engineered iron oxide NPs with multifunctionalities was explored in in vitro/in vivo biomedical applications, focusing on their combined roles in bioseparation, as a biosensor, targeted-drug delivery, MR contrast agents, and magnetic fluid hyperthermia. This review outlines the limitations of extant surface engineering strategies and several developing strategies that may overcome these limitations. This study also details the promising future directions of this active research field.

Abstract
Here we present metal-organic frameworks prepared by a one-step synthesis method, possessing both architectural properties of MOF building and up-conversion luminescence of rare earth Er(3+) (hereafter denoted as Up-MOFs). Up-MOFs have characteristic up-conversion emissions at 520, 540, and 651 nm under the excitation of 980 nm owing to the multiple photon absorption. The up-conversion mechanism of these Up-MOFs has been discussed, and it can be attributed to the excited state absorption process. The design and synthesis of Up-MOF materials possessing near-infrared region excitation and up-conversion luminescence are fully expected to be candidates for the advancement of applications in bioimaging, sensors, optoelectronics, and energy conversion/storage devices.

Abstract
The assembly of a fluorescent pentiptycene-based ligand with copper ion resulted in the formation of a 3D porous metal-organic framework (UPC-21) based on well-known paddlewheel SBUs. UPC-21 exhibits selective adsorption of CO2 over CH4 and N2 at 273 K and 295 K, C2H2 over CH4 at 273 K. The most significant performance of UPC-21 is its highly efficient detection of NACs such as 4-NP, 1,4-DNB, NB, and 1,3-DNB with the calculated quenching constants, Ksv, being 3.097 × 10(6), 1.406 × 10(6), 4.420 × 10(5), and 1.498 × 10(5 )M(-1) for 4-NP, 1,4-DNB, NB, 1,3-DNB, respectively, which keeps a record on the fluorescence detection of NACs. This is the first porous Cu(II) MOF that exhibits fluorescent detection of NACs with high sensitivities.

Abstract
The detection of explosives is one of the current pressing concerns in global security. In the past few decades, a large number of emissive sensing materials have been developed for the detection of explosives in vapor, solution, and solid states through fluorescence methods. In recent years, great efforts have been devoted to develop new fluorescent materials with various sensing mechanisms for detecting explosives in order to achieve super-sensitivity, ultra-selectivity, as well as fast response time. This review article starts with a brief introduction on various sensing mechanisms for fluorescence based explosive detection, and then summarizes in an exhaustive and systematic way the state-of-the-art of fluorescent materials for explosive detection with a focus on the research in the recent 5 years. A wide range of fluorescent materials, such as conjugated polymers, small fluorophores, supramolecular systems, bio-inspired materials and aggregation induced emission-active materials, and their sensing performance and sensing mechanism are the centerpiece of this review. Finally, conclusions and future outlook are presented and discussed.
