Multiphase Microfluidics: Fundamentals, Fabrication, and Functions

Multiphase microfluidics enables an alternative approach with many possibilities in studying, analyzing, and manufacturing functional materials due to its numerous benefits over macroscale methods, such as its ultimate controllability, stability, heat and mass transfer capacity, etc. In addition to its immense potential in biomedical applications, multiphase microfluidics also offers new opportunities in various industrial practices including extraction, catalysis loading, and fabrication of ultralight materials. Herein, aiming to give preliminary guidance for researchers from different backgrounds, a comprehensive overview of the formation mechanism, fabrication methods, and emerging applications of multiphase microfluidics using different systems is provided. Finally, major challenges facing the field are illustrated while discussing potential prospects for future work.

Bubble Meets Droplet: Particle-Assisted Reconfiguration of Wetting Morphologies in Colloidal Multiphase Systems

Wetting phenomena are ubiquitous in nature and play key functions in various industrial processes and products. When a gas bubble encounters an oil droplet in an aqueous medium, it can experience either partial wetting or complete engulfment by the oil. Each of these morphologies can have practical benefits, and controlling the morphology is desirable for applications ranging from particle synthesis to oil recovery and gas flotation. It is known that the wetting of two fluids within a fluid medium depends on the balance of interfacial tensions and can thus be modified with surfactant additives. It is reported that colloidal particles, too, can be used to promote both wetting and dewetting in multifluid systems. This study demonstrates the surfactant-free tuning and dynamic reconfiguration of bubble-droplet morphologies with the help of cellulosic particles. It further shows that the effect can be attributed to particle adsorption at the fluid interfaces, which can be probed by interfacial tensiometry, making particle-induced transitions in the wetting morphology predictable. Finally, particle adsorption at different rates to air-water and oil-water interfaces can even lead to slow, reentrant wetting behavior not familiar from particle-free systems.

A simple and low-cost fully 3D-printed non-planar emulsion generator

We propose a low-cost 3D-printed emulsion generator. The 3-D pinch-off junction eliminates the need for surface treatment as the inner liquid never touches the channel wall. The same device can therefore pinch off both inner drops of oil or water.

Tailoring and understanding the mechanical properties of nanoparticle-shelled bubbles

One common approach to generate lightweight materials with high specific strength and stiffness is the incorporation of stiff hollow microparticles (also known as bubbles or microballoons) into a polymeric matrix. The mechanical properties of these composites, also known as syntactic foams, greatly depend on those of the hollow microparticles. It is critical to precisely control the properties of these bubbles to fabricate lightweight materials that are suitable for specific applications. In this paper, we present a method to tailor the mechanical properties and response of highly monodisperse nanoparticle-shelled bubbles using thermal treatment. We characterize the mechanical properties of individual as-assembled bubbles as well as those of thermally treated ones using nanoindentation and quantitative in situ compression tests. As-assembled bubbles display inelastic response, whereas thermally treated bubbles behave elastically. We also show that the stiffness and strength of bubbles are enhanced significantly, as much as 12 and 14 times that of the as-assembled bubbles, respectively, via thermal treatment. We complement the experimental results with finite element analysis (FEA) to understand the effect of shell thickness nonuniformity as well as the inelasticity on the mechanical response and fracture behavior of these bubbles. We demonstrate that the failure mechanism of bubbles incorporated into a polymer composite depends on the structure of the bubbles.
