Abstract
The synthesis of symmetrical 3,3'-bisoxindoles from simple acyclic β-oxoanilides is reported. The described method forges three new C-C bonds in a single step via a sequential Mn(OAc)3·2H2O mediated oxidative radical cyclization-fragmentation-dimerization process. The scope of this reaction is demonstrated in the preparation of a variety of 3,3'-bisoxindoles, as well as its application toward the formal synthesis of the Calycanthaceae alkaloid, (±)-folicanthine.

Abstract
A new low-temperature procedure for the synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted 2-oxindoles via cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) is reported. The use of a strong, nonreversible base in these reactions has been found to effect a dramatic drop in reaction temperature (to room temperature) relative to the current state-of-the-art (>100 °C) procedure. When employing iodine as an "oxidant", new evidence suggests that this transformation may occur via a transiently stable iodinated intermediate rather than by direct single-electron oxidation.

Abstract
We developed a palladium-catalyzed diastereoselective three-component reaction of N-aryl diazoamides, pyridine, and chloroformate, which proceeded through trapping of transient zwitterionic intermediates by in situ formed N-acylpyridinium salts in a regioselective 1,4-addition fashion. This reaction can rapidly provide a library of biologically relevant 4-(2-oxoindolin-3-yl)-1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives in high yields (up to 98%) with moderate to excellent diastereoselectivities (up to >95:5 dr) under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
The synthesis of acridanes and related compounds through a Cu-catalysed radical cross-dehydrogenative coupling of simple 2-[2-(arylamino)aryl]malonates is reported. This method can be further streamlined to a one-pot protocol involving the in situ fomation of the 2-[2-(arylamino)aryl]malonate by α-arylation of diethyl malonate with 2-bromodiarylamines under Pd catalysis, followed by Cu-catalysed cyclisation.

Abstract
In this work, we demonstrate that the tBuO− anion serves not only as the base but also as a mediator to promote the reduction of Cu(ii) to Cu(i) in copper catalysis. XAFS and EPR spectroscopy evidence the [Cu(OtBu)3]− ate complex as the key intermediate which undergoes homolytic cleavage of the O–Cu(ii) bond generating [Cu(OtBu)2]− ate complex.

Abstract
A synthetic method to prepare (E)-(pyridin-2-yl)enones and (E)-(quinolin-8-yl)enones that relies on the respective copper(I)-catalyzed formal cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction of 2-methylpyridine and 8-methylquinoline with methyl ketones has been discovered. The mechanism was delineated to follow a pathway involving oxidation of the N-heterocycle to its corresponding aldehyde adduct prior to reaction with the methyl ketone. The versatility and substrate dependent divergence in the reactivity of the copper-mediated CDC strategy was exemplified by its application to the synthesis of N-(quinolin-8-ylmethyl)amide and N-(quinolin-8-ylmethyl)aniline adducts on switching the cross-coupling partner to benzamides or an aniline derivative.

Abstract
A metal-free oxidative decarbonylative coupling of aromatic aldehydes with electron-rich or electron-deficient arenes to produce biaryl compounds was developed. This novel coupling was proposed to proceed via a non-chain radical homolytic aromatic substitution (HAS) type mechanism, based on the substrate scope, ortho-regioselectivity, radical trapping experiments and DFT calculation studies. With the ready availability of aromatic aldehydes and arenes, metal-free conditions should make this coupling attractive for the biaryl synthesis.

Abstract
Three orthogonal cascade CH functionalization processes are described, based on ruthenium-catalyzed CH alkenylation. 1-Indanones, indeno indenes, and indeno furanones were accessed through cascade pathways by using arylacetophenones as substrates under conditions of catalytic [{Ru(p-cymene)Cl2 }2 ] and stoichiometric Cu(OAc)2 . Each transformation uses CH functionalization methods to form CC bonds sequentially, with the indeno furanone synthesis featuring a CO bond formation as the terminating step. This work demonstrates the power of ruthenium-catalyzed alkenylation as a platform reaction to develop more complex transformations, with multiple CH functionalization steps taking place in a single operation to access novel carbocyclic structures.
