Abstract
Biodegradable polymers from bioresources are highly in demand for the development of sustainable polymer platforms for commodity plastics and in the biomedical field. Here, an elegant one-pot synthetic strategy is developed, for the first time, to access unexplored hybrid polymers from two naturally abundant resources: carbohydrates (sugars) and l-amino acids. A bottleneck in the synthetic strategy is overcome by tailor-making d-mannitol-based six- and five-membered bicyclic acetalized diols, and their structures are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and 2D NMR spectroscopy. l-Amino acids are converted into ester-urethane functional monomers, and they are polymerized with sugar-diols under solvent-free melt polycondensation to yield biodegradable poly(ester-urethane)s. Acid-catalyzed deprotection yielded amphiphilic polymers having exclusively alternating residues of sugar and l-amino acid in the polymer backbone. The polymer is self-assembled into 200 ± 10 nm sized nanoparticles that can encapsulate fluorescent dyes, are nontoxic to cells up to 250 μg/mL, and are readily endocytosed for lysosomal enzymatic biodegradation at the cellular level.

Abstract
The reluctance of a polyester with high glass transition temperature (Tg) and mechanical properties to hydrolyze is a well-known fact, for instance, the high hydrolysis resistance of aromatic polyesters based on terephthalic acid and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The synthesis of polyesters that have a high Tg (>100 °C) and a fast hydrolytic degradation quality at the same time is a valuable topic. Herein, a renewable rigid diester, N,N'-trans-1,4-cyclohexane-bis(pyrrolidone-4-methyl carboxylate) (CBPC), was obtained via Michael addition. CBPC was copolymerized with FDCA and ethylene glycol to prepare a series of copolyesters PECxEFy with a high Mn over 30 kDa. PECxEFy showed a Tg range of 75.2-109.2 °C which outdistanced the most biobased polyesters. The thermal stability of all PECxEFy remained unchanged with the introduction of CBPC. Moreover, PECxEFy presented superior mechanical performances which were matching or exceeding those of commercial polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid (PLA). PECxEFy was stable in air but was able to undergo noticeable hydrolytic degradation, proving their enhanced degradability. And the regulation between CBPC and FDCA composition can be leveraged to adjust the degradation and environmental durability of PECxEFy, up to practical applications. Computational studies systematically revealed the relationship between CBPC with a tricyclic structure and the improved Tg and hydrolyzation properties. The outstanding thermal and mechanical performances and hydrolysis of these copolyesters appear to be promising candidates for renewable alternatives to industrial petrochemical polyesters.

Abstract
Syntheses of two new monomers, namely the glucose derivatives 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-1 methacryloyl-glucopyranose (MGlc) and 2,3,4,6 tetra-O-acetyl-1-acryloylglucopyranose (AGlc), are presented. Their chemical structures were determined by the FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, the single-crystal X-ray analysis, supported by the powder X-ray diffraction, and the DSC analyses. Molecules of both monomers exist in the β-anomeric form in the solid state. The variable temperature X-ray diffraction studies, supported by the DSC analyses, revealed AGlc's propensity for polymorphism and temperature-induced phase transitions. MGlc and AGlc crystallised from methanol were polymerized or copolymerized with methyl methacrylate and N-vinylpyrrolidone. The biodegradabilities of polymers as well as thermal and optical properties were studied. The results show that some properties of the obtained homopolymers and copolymers resemble those of PMMA. The main difference is that the AGlc and MGlc homopolymers are biodegradable while PMMA is not. The ternary copolymers, i.e., MGlc/AGlc-MMA-NVP lose more than 10% of their weight after six months.

Synergistic interaction of renewable nipagin and eugenol for aromatic copoly(ether ester) materials with desired performance. Sci Rep 2021; 11:24119. [PMID: 34916589 PMCID: PMC8677751 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-021-03614-z] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/11/2021] [Accepted: 12/07/2021] [Indexed: 11/10/2022] Open
Abstract
Naturally occurring nipagin and eugenol were used as the collaborative starting materials for poly(ether ester) polymers. In this study, two series of nipagin and eugenol-derived copoly(ether ester)s, PHN11−xE1x and PHN11−xE2x (x = 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%), were prepared with renewable 1,6-hexanediol as a comonomer. The nipagin-derived component acts as the renewable surrogate of petroleum-based dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), while the eugenol-derived component acts as the cooperative property modifier of parent homopoly(ether ester) PHN1. 1,6-Hexanediol was chosen as the spacer because of its renewability, high boiling point, and short chain to enhance the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of materials. The molecular weights and chemical structures were confirmed by gel permeation chromatograph (GPC), NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. Thermal and crystalline properties were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD). The tensile assays were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties. The results suggested that properties of this kind of poly(ether ester)s could be finely tuned by the relative content of two components for the desired applications (elastomer, rubbery) suitable for different scenarios from polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

Abstract
Aromatic copolyesters, derived from bio-based nipagin and eugenol, were synthesized with renewable 1,6-hexandiol as the spacer. Number-average, weight-average molecular weights (Mn, Mw), and polydispersity (D) values were determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Chemical structures were confirmed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopies. Chemical microstructure analysis suggested that the nipagin and eugenol-derived units were inserted into polymer chains in an arbitrary manner. Due to the short chain of 1,6-hexanediol, the splitting of magnetically different methylene carbons, adjacent to the alcohol-oxygens, proved to be more sensitive towards sequence distributions, at the dyed level, than those from 1,10-decanediol. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that these polyester materials have excellent thermal stability (>360 °C), regardless of the content of eugenol-derived composition incorporated. Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) experiments revealed the semicrystalline nature for this kind of copolyesters. The crystallinities gradually decreased with the increase of eugenol-derived composition. Thermal and crystalline properties were well discussed from the microscopic perspective. The point of this work lies in establishing guidance for future design and modification of high-performance polymer materials from the microscopic perspective.

Abstract
In this work, alicyclic (1R,3S)-1,2,2-trimethylcyclopentane-1,3-dimethanol (TCDM), derived from natural camphor, was copolymerized with linear α,ω-diacids, terephthalic acid (TPA), and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), affording a series of polyesters with functional properties. 2D NMR spectroscopy revealed that the stereoconfiguration of TCDM was preserved after polymerization. The TCDM polyester based on TPA showed high thermostability, high Tg value (115 °C), high modulus (1.3 GPa), and high ultimate strength (29.8 MPa). The TCDM polyester based on 1,4-succinic acid exhibited excellent ductility and resilience. Lastly, the rigidity analysis based on van Krevelen's group contribution method, coupled with the comparisons between TCDM- and sugar-based polyesters, confirmed that TCDM is a highly reactive and rigid diol. Results indicate that TCDM polyesters are suitable for a wide range of applications, including hot-filled containers and transparent packaging materials. This work addresses some critical needs for high performance biopolymers such as achieving high Tg values, high thermostability, and high transparency.

Abstract
Environmental and health concerns force the search for sustainable super engineering plastics (SEPs) that utilise bio-derived cyclic monomers, e.g. isosorbide instead of restricted petrochemicals. However, previously reported bio-derived thermosets or thermoplastics rarely offer thermal/mechanical properties, scalability, or recycling that match those of petrochemical SEPs. Here we use a phase transfer catalyst to synthesise an isosorbide-based polymer with a high molecular weight >100 kg mol-1, which is reproducible at a 1-kg-scale production. It is transparent and solvent/melt-processible for recycling, with a glass transition temperature of 212 °C, a tensile strength of 78 MPa, and a thermal expansion coefficient of 23.8 ppm K-1. Such a performance combination has not been reported before for bio-based thermoplastics, petrochemical SEPs, or thermosets. Interestingly, quantum chemical simulations show the alicyclic bicyclic ring structure of isosorbide imposes stronger geometric restraint to polymer chain than the aromatic group of bisphenol-A.

Abstract
Three series of polyalkanoates (adipates, suberates and sebacates) were synthesized using as monomers three sugar-based bicyclic diols derived from D-glucose (Glux-diol and isosorbide) and D-mannose (Manx-diol). Polycondensations were conducted in the melt applying similar reaction conditions for all cases. The aim was to compare the three bicyclic diols regarding their suitability to render aliphatic polyesters with enhanced thermal and mechanical properties. The ensuing polyesters had molecular weights (Mw) in the 25,000–50,000 g mol−1 range with highest values being attained for Glux-diol. All the polyesters started to decompose above 300 °C and most of them did not display perceivable crystallinity. On the contrary, they had glass transition temperatures much higher than usually found in homologous polyesters made of alkanediols, and showed a stress–strain behavior consistent with their Tg values. Glux-diol was particularly effective in increasing the Tg and to render therefore polyesters with high elastic modulus and considerable mechanical strength.

Abstract
A facile and highly efficient strategy for the synthesis of functional polyesters from 10-undecenoic acid, which is abundantly available and derived from ricin oil, has been successfully achieved using 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl guanidine (TMG) as a promoter at room temperature. The experimental results indicate that high molecular weight polyesters have been obtained and a variety of functional groups, such as alkenyl, alkynyl, nitro, epoxy, hydroxyl, and bromoisobutyrate, can be incorporated as pendant groups. The structures of the obtained polymers were demonstrated by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and their thermal properties were studied by DSC and TGA.
