Radical and diradical states of bis(molybdenocene dithiolene) complexes

The synthesis and characterization of two bis(dithiolene) proligands involving heteroatomic linkers such as 1,4-dithiine and dihydro-1,4-disiline between the two protected dithiolene moieties are described. Two bimetallic complexes involving these heteroatomic bridges between two redox active bis(cyclopentadienyl)molybdenum dithiolene moieties have been synthesized and characterized by electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and their properties rationalized with (TD-)DFT. Cyclic voltammetry experiments show sequential oxidation of the two redox centers with ΔE values between successive one-electron transfers varying according to the nature of the bridge. Depending on the nature of the heteroatomic bridge, the bis-oxidized complexes exhibit either a diradical character with both radicals essentially localized on the metallacycles, or a closed-shell dicationic state.

Synthesis and structures of polyiodide radical cation salts of donors combining tetrathiafulvalene with multiple thiophene or oligo-thiophene substituents

The preparation and structures of the radical cation salts of a series of new TTF-based donors bearing thiophene or oligothiophene side chains with polyiodide counterions are described.

An aryl-fused redox-active tetrathiafulvalene with enhanced mixed-valence and radical-cation dimer stabilities

Molecular recognition of stable organic radicals is a relatively novel, but important structural binding motif in supramolecular chemistry. Here, we report on a redox-switchable veratrole-fused tetrathiafulvalene derivative VTTF which is ideally suited for this purpose and for the incorporation into stimuli-responsive systems. As revealed by electrochemistry, UV/Vis measurements, X-ray analysis, and electrocrystallisation, VTTF can be reversibly oxidised to the corresponding radical-cation or dication which shows optoelectronic and structural propterties similar to tetrathiafulvalene and tetrakis(methylthio)tetrathiafulvalene. However, theoretical calculations, variable temperature EPR, and NIR spectroscopy indicate that the dispersion-driven binding in the mixed-valence dimer (VTTF2)˙+ (KMV = 69 M-1 in CH2Cl2) and the radical-cation dimer (VTTF˙+)2 (KRC = 38 M-1 in CH3CN) is significantly enhanced by the additional veratrole π-surface in comparison to pristine tetrathiafulvalene.

A weaker donor shows higher oxidation state upon aggregation

The charge-transfer between TTFs and I2 shows that the stronger donor TTF1 is in a cation radical state and the weaker donor TTF2 is neutral in solution, whereas TTF1 exists as a cation radical and TTF2 is dicationic in complexes. The dicationic and neutral states of TTF2 are reversible upon aggregation and solvation.

Crystal structure of ethyl-ene-dioxy-tetra-thia-fulvalene-4,5-bis-(thiol-benzoic acid) 0.25-hydrate

In the title compound (systematic name: 4,4'-{[2-(5,6-di-hydro-[1,3]di-thiolo[4,5-b][1,4]dioxin-2-yl-idene)-1,3-di-thiole-4,5-di-yl]bis-(sulfanedi-yl)}di-benzoic acid 0.25-hydrate), C22H14O6S6·0.25H2O, the tetra-thia-fulvalene (TTF) core adopts a boat conformation, where the central S2C=CS2 plane makes dihedral angles of 31.34 (4) and 26.83 (6)°, respectively, with the peripheral S2C=CS2 and S2C2O2 planes. In the crystal, the benzoic acid mol-ecules are linked via O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming inversion dimers with R22(8) motifs. The dimers are linked through weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a chain structure along [-101]. The chains stack along the a axis through S⋯S and S⋯C short contacts, forming layers parallel to the ac plane.

Structure-dependent electronic transition in a new type of π-electron delocalized multi-sulfur bis(dithiolene)nickel complex

Four new nickel bis(dithiolene) complexes were synthesized and characterized. The UV-vis-NIR spectra and DFT calculations indicate that their HOMO and LUMO energy levels are highly depended on the donating/withdrawing abilities of their substituents.

Aryl-fused tetrathianaphthalene (TTN): synthesis, structures, properties, and cocrystals with fullerenes

A library of aryl-fused TTN has been synthesized to show shape complementary with fullerene molecules and form “TTN·fullerene” cocrystals.

Donor-acceptor type co-crystals of arylthio-substituted tetrathiafulvalenes and fullerenes

A series of donor-acceptor type co-crystals of fullerene (as the acceptor) and arylthio-substituted tetrathiafulvalene derivatives (Ar-S-TTF, as the donor) were prepared and their structural features were thoroughly investigated. The formation of co-crystals relies on the flexibility of Ar-S-TTF and the size matches between Ar-S-TTF and fullerene. Regarding their compositions, the studied co-crystals can be divided into two types, where types I and II have donor:acceptor ratios of 1:1 and 1:2, respectively. Multiple intermolecular interactions are observed between the donor and acceptor, which act to stabilize the structures of the resulting co-crystals. In the type I co-crystals, the fullerene molecule is surrounded by four Ar-S-TTF molecules, that is, two Ar-S-TTF molecules form a sandwich structure with one fullerene molecule and the other two Ar-S-TTF molecules interact with the fullerene molecule along their lateral axes. In the type II co-crystals, one fullerene molecule has the donor-acceptor mode similar to that in type I, whereas the other fullerene molecule is substantially surrounded by the aryl groups on Ar-S-TTF molecules and the solvent molecules.

Copper ion salts of arylthiotetrathiafulvalenes: synthesis, structure diversity and magnetic properties

The combination of CuBr2 and arylthio-substituted tetrathiafulvalene derivatives (1-7) results in a series of charge-transfer (CT) complexes. Crystallographic studies indicate that the anions in the complexes, which are derived from CuBr2, show diverse configurations including linear [Cu(I)Br2](-), tetrahedral [Cu(II)Br4](2-), planar [Cu(II)2Br6](2-), and coexistence of planar [Cu(II)Br4](2-) and tetrahedral [Cu(II)Br3](-) ions. On the other hand, the TTFs show either radical cation or dication states that depend on their redox potentials. The central TTF framework on most of TTFs is nearly planar despite the charge on them, whereas the two dithiole rings on molecule 4 in complex 4·CuBr4 are significantly twisted with a dihedral angle of 38.3°. The magnetic properties of the complexes were elucidated. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility of complex 5·Cu2Br6 shows the singlet-triplet transition with coupling constant J = -248 K, and that of 3·(CuBr4)0.5·CuBr3·THF shows the abrupt change at 270 K caused by the modulation of intermolecular interactions. The thermo variation of magnetic susceptibility for the other complexes follows the Curie-Weiss law, indicating the weak antiferromagnetic interaction at low temperature.

Decorating tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) with fluorinated phenyls through sulfur bridges: facile synthesis, properties, and aggregation through fluorine interactions

Tetrathiafulvalene derivatives (TTF1-TTF9) bearing fluorinated phenyl groups attached through the sulfur bridges have been synthesized by employing a copper-mediated C-S coupling reaction of C6 H5-x Fx I (x=1, 2, 5) and a zinc-thiolate complex, (TBA)2 [Zn(DMIT)2 ] (TBA=tetrabutyl ammonium, DMIT=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate), as the key step. Particularly, the selective synthesis of C6 F5 -substituted (TTF8) and C6 F4 -fused (TTF9) TTFs from C6 F5 I is disclosed. The physicochemical properties and crystal structures of these TTFs are fully investigated by UV/Vis absorption spectra, cyclic voltammetry, molecular orbital calculation, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The exchange of hydrogen versus fluorine on the peripheral phenyl groups show a notable influence on both the electronic and crystallographic natures of the resulting TTFs: 1) lowering both the HOMO and the LUMO energy levels, 2) modulating the electrochemical properties by regioselective and/or the degree of fluorination, 3) enhancing the driving forces of stacking by multiple fluorine interactions (F⋅⋅⋅S, CF⋅⋅⋅π/πF , CF⋅⋅⋅FC, and CF⋅⋅⋅H). This work indicates that the decoration with fluorinated phenyls holds promise to produce functional TTFs with novel electronic and aggregation features.

Disulfides as efficient thiolating reagents enabling selective bis-sulfenylation of aryl dihalides under mild copper-catalyzed conditions

Selective bis-sulfenylation reactions of aryl dihalides have been achieved by copper-catalyzed C–S coupling reactions under mild conditions of refluxing EtOH (80 °C).
