Abstract
A series of metal salen complexes, original in view of the presence in their structure of a highly flexible and hydrophobic spacer, were prepared on the basis of the reaction of 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane with 3,5-dichloro-, 3,5-dibromo- and 3-hydroxy-salicylaldehyde and various metal ions (Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+). The isolated products were completely characterized from the structural point of view by FTIR, NMR, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction, and further investigated from the perspective of the behavior induced mainly by the structural peculiarities. Emphasis is placed on self-assembly properties, both in bulk and in solution, depending on temperature, solvent nature and concentration, including thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals (LC). LCs that appear in the form of nematic toroidal droplets have been fully demonstrated by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and fluorescence anisotropy studies. The fluorescence analysis results revealed the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon, where the emission occurs only for liquid crystals, with a few exceptions. Because these complexes can exist in both amorphous and crystalline states, it raised the question of how properties, such as electrical, change when switching from one state to another. These were well highlighted by DSC, BDS, PXRD, FTIR and fluorescence anisotropy.

Abstract
AzuFluor® 435-DPA-Zn, an azulene fluorophore bearing two zinc(II)-dipicolylamine receptor motifs, exhibits fluorescence enhancement in the presence of adenosine diphosphate. Selectivity for ADP over ATP, AMP and PPi results from appropriate positioning of the receptor motifs, since an isomeric sensor cannot discriminate between ADP and ATP.

Abstract
A soluble, green-blue fluorescent, π-extended azatrioxa[8]circulene was synthesized by oxidative condensation of a 3,6-dihydroxycarbazole and 1,4-anthraquinone by using benzofuran scaffolding. This is the first circulene to incorporate anthracene within its carbon framework. Solvent-dependent fluorescence and bright green electroluminescence accompanied by excimer emission are the key optical properties of this material. The presence of sliding π-stacked columns in the single crystal of dianthracenylazatrioxa[8]circulene is found to cause a very high electron-hopping rate, thus making this material a promising n-type organic semiconductor with an electron mobility predicted to be around 2.26 cm2 V-1 s-1 . The best organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device based on the dianthracenylazatrioxa[8]circulene fluorescent emitter has a brightness of around 16 000 Cd m-2 and an external quantum efficiency of 3.3 %. Quantum dot-based OLEDs were fabricated by using dianthracenylazatrioxa[8]circulene as a host matrix material.

Abstract
The synthesis of argentivorous molecules (L1 and L2) having two chromophores (4-(anthracen-9-yl)benzyl or 4-(pyren-1-yl)benzyl groups) and two benzyl groups and the fluorescence properties of their silver complexes in a solution and the solid state are reported. A crystallographic approach for the Ag+ complexes with L1 and L2 revealed that the observed fluorescence changes stem from the excimer formation and extinction of fluorescent. Furthermore, binding stabilities of L1 and L2 toward Ag+ ions were estimated by the Ag+-induced UV-vis and PL spectral changes.

Abstract
The dizinc(ii) complexes of L were used for the recognition of anions by fluorescence spectroscopy (L is a heteroditopic hexaazamacrocycle with two diethylenetriamine coordination heads with 2-methylpyridyl and dansylamido ethyl arms, and m-xylyl spacers). The protonation of L and stability constants of its zinc(ii) complexes were determined in aqueous solution, at 298.2 ± 0.1 K and I = 0.10 ± 0.01 M in KNO3. At a 2 : 1 Zn2+/L ratio, the dinuclear complexes clearly dominate. The ligand alone does not display fluorescence changes upon increasing the pH value, but in the presence of Zn2+ the emission reaches a maximum at pH ≅ 7.5, at which 95% of the ligand is in the dinuclear complex form. The emission appears concomitantly with the [Zn2H-1L]3+ species formation, which supports that the latter complex corresponds to the metal-promoted deprotonation of dansylamide NH. The [Zn2H-1L]3+ complexes were used for the recognition of phosphate and polyphosphate anions in aqueous solution buffered at pH 7.5 with 2 mM PIPPS, at 298.2 K. The binding of anions causes a decrease of the emission. The association constant determination revealed that HPPi3- is the strongest bound anion (log Kapp = 5.57), followed by HATP3- (two times weaker), and the remaining anions show lower binding constants, with HPO42- having the weakest uptake by the receptor. The observed selectivity of the [Zn2H-1L]3+ receptor for PPi in relation to HPO42-, and the fact that the formation of the [Zn2H-1L]3+ complex is not disturbed by the presence of Mg2+, allowed monitoring of the PPi hydrolysis by using inorganic pyrophosphatase in real-time.

Abstract
We presented a novel approach for pyrophosphate (PPi) sensing. Two tetraphenylethene (TPE)-functionalised pyridine salts (TPM and TPH) were designed and synthesized. Both of them exhibited weak emission in the solution state that originates from intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from TPE to the pyridine; the addition of PPi into the TPM aqueous solution would enhance the fluorescence intensity, which eliminates the emission quenching effect of the iodide ion by the formation of PPi-sensor nanoparticles. The detection limit of TPM was determined to be as low as 133 nM. Meanwhile, a thin solid film of TPM that could detect PPi rapidly was conveniently prepared.

Abstract
Combining metal-anion coordination and π-π stacking interactions, a zinc complex of a novel anthracene-based cyclophane was designed to recognise adenine nucleoside polyphosphates. This complex was found to show selective fluorescence enhancement for ATP, ADP, AMP and PPi in neutral aqueous solution. Among them, ADP induced the largest fluorescence change to the complex, while ATP showed the strongest binding affinity to the complex. This property was used to sense ATP in the presence of excess amounts of other phosphates such as ADP, AMP, PPi and Pi.
