A Noncentrosymmetric Metal-Free Borophosphate: Achieving a Large Birefringence and Excellent Stability by Covalent-Linkage

Organic-inorganic hybrid linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have received increasingly wide spread attention in recent years. Herein, the first hybrid noncentrosymmetric (NCS) borophosphate, (C5H6N)2B2O(HPO4)2 (4PBP), is rationally designed and synthesized by a covalent-linkage strategy. 4-pyridyl-boronic acid (4 PB) is considered as a bifunctional unit, which may effectively improve the optical properties and stability of the resultant material. On the one hand, 4 PB units are covalently linked with PO3(OH) groups via strong B-O-P connections, which significantly enhances the thermal stability of 4PBP (decomposition at 321, vs lower 200 °C of most of hybrid materials). On the other hand, the planar π-conjugated C5H6N units and their uniform layered arrangements represent large structural anisotropy and hyperpolarizability, achieving the largest birefringence (0.156 @ 546 nm) in the reported borophosphates and a second-harmonic generation response (0.7 × KDP). 4PBP also exhibits a wide transparency range (0.27-1.50 µm). This work not only provides a promising birefringent material, but also offers a practical covalent-attachment strategy for the rational design of new high-performance optical materials.

Preparation, X-ray Characterization, and Reactivity of the Rod-like and Angular Germanium- and Titanium(IV)-Capped Iron(II) Bis-Clathrochelates and Their Mono- and Bis-Capped (Semi)clathrochelate Precursors

Transmetalation of the bis{triethylantimony(V)}-capped iron(II) tris-α-dioximate with n-butylboronic acid afforded the mixed antimony, boron cross-linked clathrochelate with single reactive antimony(V)-based apical fragment. This macrobicyclic precursor easily underwent the transmetalation reactions with germanium and titanium(IV) alkoxides to give the rod-like and angular FeII2MIV-trinuclear bis-clathrochelates. Those of the aforementioned diantimony(V)-capped complex with 3- and 4-carboxyphenylboronic acids afforded the monoboron-capped iron(II) semiclathrochelates, undergoing a double-cyclization (macrobicyclization) with germanium- and titanium(IV)-based capping agents. The reactions in the low-temperature range unexpectedly gave the stable 2:1 associates, formed by the bridging of two carboxyl-terminated macrobicyclic molecules of the mixed carboxylboron, triethylantimony-capped iron(II) clathrochelate with a triethylantimony(V)-based linker fragment. The obtained complexes were characterized using elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF, 1H and 13C{1H} NMR and UV-vis spectra, and single-crystal XRD experiments. The encapsulated iron(II) ion in their 3D-molecules is situated almost in the center of its FeN6-coordination polyhedron possessing a truncated trigonal-pyramidal geometry. Fe-N distances fall in the range 1.887(7)-1.945(4) Å characteristic of the low-spin iron(II) complexes. The cross-linking titanium and germanium(IV) ions in the corresponding bis-clathrochelate molecules form the octahedral MIVO6-coordination polyhedra, the MIV-O distances of which vary from 1.946(2) to 1.964(2) Å and from 1.879(7) to 1.907(6) Å, respectively.

Multistep synthesis and X-ray structures of carboxyl-terminated hybrid iron(II) phthalocyaninatoclathrochelates and their postsynthetic transformation into polytopic carboranyl-containing derivatives

A multistep general synthetic strategy towards polytopic carboranyl-containing (semi)clathrochelate metal complexes, based on the template synthesis, transmetallation, amide condensation and 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions, is developed. Their mono(semi)clathrochelate precursors with a single reactive group were obtained using a transmetallation of the triethylantimony-capped macrobicyclic precursor. The thus obtained carboxyl-terminated iron(II) semiclathrochelate underwent a macrobicyclization with zirconium(IV) phthalocyaninate to form the corresponding phthalocyaninatoclathrochelate. The direct one-pot template condensation of the suitable chelating and cross-linking ligand synthons on the Fe²⁺ ion as a matrix was also used for its preparation. Further amide condensation of the aforementioned semiclathrochelate and hybrid complexes with propargylamine in the presence of carbonyldiimidazole gave the (pseudo)cage derivatives with a terminal CC bond. Their "click" reaction with an appropriate carboranylmethyl azide afforded the ditopic carboranosemiclathrochelates and the tritopic carboranyl-containing phthalocyaninatoclathrochelates with a flexible spacer fragment between their polyhedral entities. The obtained new complexes were characterized using elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, multinuclear NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy, and by single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. Their FeN₆-coordination polyhedra show a truncated trigonal-pyramidal geometry, while the cross-linking heptacoordinate Zr⁴⁺ or Hf⁴⁺ cations in the hybrid compounds form the M^IVN₄O₃-coordination polyhedra with the geometry of a capped trigonal prism.

Synthesis, crystal polymorphism and spin crossover behavior of adamantylboron-capped cobalt(II) hexachloroclathrochelate and its transformation into the CoIIICoIICoIII-bis-macrobicyclic derivative

Fast crystallization of the monoclathrochelate cobalt(II) intracomplex [Co(Cl₂Gm)₃(BAd)₂] (where Cl₂Gm^2- is a dichloroglyoxime dianion and BAd is an adamantylboron capping group, 1), initially obtained by the direct template condensation of the corresponding chelating α-dioximate and cross-linking ligand synthons on the Co²⁺ ion as a matrix, from benzene or dichloromethane afforded its structural triclinic and hexagonal polymorphs. Its prolonged recrystallization from dichloromethane under air atmosphere and sunlight irradiation unexpectedly gave the crystals of the Co^IIICo^IICo^III-trinuclear dodecachloro-bis-clathrochelate intracomplex [[Co^III(Cl₂Gm)₃(BAd)]₂Co^II] (2), the molecule of which consists of two macrobicyclic frameworks with encapsulated low-spin (LS) Co³⁺ ions, which are cross-linked by a μ₃-bridging Co²⁺ ion as a bifunctional Lewis-acidic center. The most plausible pathway of such a 1 → 2 transformation is based on the photoinitiated radical oxidation of dichloromethane with air oxygen giving the reactive species. Cobalt(II) monoclathrochelate 1 was found to undergo a temperature-induced spin crossover (SCO) both in its solutions and in the solid state. In spite of the conformational rigidity of the corresponding quasiaromatic diboron-capped tris-α-dioximate framework, the main parameters of this SCO transition (i.e., its completeness and gradual character) are strongly affected by the nature of the used solvent (in the case of its solutions) and by the structural polymorphism of its crystals (in the solid state). In the latter case, the LS state (S = 1/2) of this complex is more thermally stable and, therefore, the cobalt(II)-centered 1/2 → 3/2 SCO is more gradual than that in solutions.

Regioselective access to di- and trisubstituted pyridines via a metal-oxidant-solvent-free domino reaction involving 3-chloropropiophenones

A remarkable metal-oxidant-solvent- and base-free domino route for regioselective access to a wide range of 2,4-di- and 2,3,4/6-trisubstituted pyridines including carbo- and heterocyclic fused pyridines is reported. This [3C + 2C + 1N] cyclization reaction occurs between 3-chloropropiophenones (3C units), enolizable acyclic/cyclic ketones (2C sources) and NH₄OAc as a robust N source under neat conditions under an open atmosphere, producing new C=C and C=N-C bonds in highly chemo- and regioselective manners. Interestingly, this eco-friendly method has many positive features: excellent functional group tolerance, broad substrate scope, good to excellent regioselectivities, promising yields, no-unwanted products, neutral reaction conditions and appropriateness for large-scale synthesis. Mechanism studies reveal that the in situ generated β-amino ketone from 3-chloropropiophenone and an ammonium salt undergoes C=N bond formation with a ketone followed by an intramolecular cyclization process (C=C bond), which are the decisive steps for pyridine synthesis.

Dramatic Effect of A Ring Size of Alicyclic α-Dioximate Ligand Synthons on Kinetics of the Template Synthesis and of the Acidic Decomposition of the Methylboron-Capped Iron(II) Clathrochelates

Kinetics and thermodynamics of the template synthesis and of the acidic decomposition of the methylboron-capped iron(II) tris-1,2-dioximates—the clathrochelate derivatives of six (nioxime)- and eight (octoxime)-membered alicyclic ligand synthons—were compared. In the case of a macrobicyclic iron(II) tris-nioximate, the plausible pathway of its formation contains a rate-determining stage and includes a reversible formation of an almost trigonal-antiprismatic (TAP) protonated tris-complex, followed by its monodeprotonation and addition of CH₃B(OH)₂. Thus, the formed TAP intermediate undergoes a multistep rate-determining stage of double cyclization with the elimination of two water molecules accompanied by a structural rearrangement, thus giving an almost trigonal-prismatic (TP) iron(FII) semiclathrochelate. It easily undergoes a cross-linking with CH₃B(OH)₂, resulting in the elimination of H⁺ ion and in the formation of a macrobicyclic structure. In contrast, the analogous scheme for its macrobicyclic tris-octoximate analog was found to contain up to three initial stages affecting the overall synthesis reaction rate. The rates of acidic decomposition of the above clathrochelates were found to be also affected by the nature of their ribbed substituents. Therefore, the single crystal XRD experiments were performed in order to explain these results. The difference in the kinetic schemes of a formation of the boron-capped iron(II) tris-nioximates and tris-octoximates is explained by necessity of the substantial changes in a geometry of the latter ligand synthon, caused by its coordination to the iron(II) ion, due to both the higher distortion of the FeN₆-coordination polyhedra, and the intramolecular sterical clashes in the molecules of the macrobicyclic iron(II) tris-octoximates.

Fluorinated Iron(ii) clathrochelate units in metalorganic based copolymers: improved porosity, iodine uptake, and dye adsorption properties

We report the synthesis of metalorganic copolymers made from the palladium catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between various iron(ii) clathrochelate building blocks with diethynyl-triptycene and fluorene derivatives. The target copolymers CCP1-5 were isolated in excellent yield and characterized by various instrumental analysis techniques. Interestingly, investigation of the copolymers' porosity properties discloses BET surface areas up to 337 m2 g-1 for the target compounds bearing fluorinated iron(ii) clathrochelate units CCP2,5. Moreover, the fluorinated copolymers display an outstanding uptake capacity of iodine with a maximum adsorption of 200 wt%. The target metalorganic copolymers CCP1-5 reveal very good adsorption of organic dyes, namely, methyl blue and methylene blue, from aqueous media.

Synthesis and spectral characterization of the first fluorescein-tagged iron(ii) clathrochelates, their supramolecular interactions with globular proteins, and cellular uptake

A fluorescein-tagged iron(ii) cage complex was obtained in a moderate total yield using a two-step synthetic procedure starting from its propargylamine-containing clathrochelate precursor. An 11-fold decrease in fluorescence quantum yield is observed in passing from the given fluorescein-based dye to its clathrochelate derivative. An excitation energy transfer from the terminal fluorescent group of the macrobicyclic molecule to its quasiaromatic highly π-conjugated clathrochelate framework can explain this effect. The kinetics of the hydrolysis of the acetyl groups of acetylated fluorescein azide and its clathrochelate derivative in the presence of one equivalent of BSA evidenced no strong supramolecular host-guest interactions between BSA and the tested compounds. Study of a chemical stability of the deacetylated iron(ii) clathrochelate suggested the formation of a supramolecular 1 : 1 BSA-clathrochelate assembly. Moreover, an addition of BSA or HSA to its solution caused the appearance of strong clathrochelate-based ICD outputs. The fluorescence emission anisotropy studies also evidenced the supramolecular binding of the fluorescein-tagged iron(ii) clathrochelate to the BSA macromolecule, leading to a high increase in this type of anisotropy. Subcellular uptake of the fluorescein-tagged molecules was visualized using fluorescence microscopy and showed its distribution to be mainly in the cytosol without entering the nucleus or accumulating in any other organelle. An X-rayed crystal of the above propargylamide macrobicyclic precursor with a reactive terminal C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond contains the clathrochelate molecules of two types, A and B. The encapsulated iron(ii) ion in these molecules is situated in the center of its FeN6-coordination polyhedron, the geometry of which is intermediate between a trigonal prism (TP) and a trigonal antiprism (TAP). The Fe-N distances vary from 1.8754(6) to 1.9286(4) Å and the heights h of their distorted TP-TAP polyhedra are very similar (2.30 and 2.31 Å); their values of φ are equal to 25.3 and 26.6°. In this crystal, the molecules of types A and B participate in different types of hydrogen bonding, giving H-bonded clathrochelate tetramers through their carboxylic and amide groups, respectively; these tetramers are connected to H-bonded chains.

Identification of a Heteroleptic Pd6L6L'6 Coordination Cage by Screening of a Virtual Combinatorial Library

The design of structurally defined heteroleptic coordination cages is a challenging task, and only few examples are known to date. Here we describe a selection approach that allowed the identification of a novel hexanuclear Pd cage containing two types of dipyridyl ligands. A virtual combinatorial library of [Pd_nL_2n](BF₄)_2n complexes was prepared by mixing six different dipyridyl ligands with substoichiometric amounts of [Pd(CH₃CN)₄](BF₄)₂. Analysis of the equilibrated reaction mixture revealed the preferential formation of a heteroleptic [Pd₆L₆L'₆](BF₄)₁₂ assembly. The complex was prepared on a preparative scale by a targeted synthesis, and its structure was elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It features an unprecedented trigonal-antiprismatic cage structure with two triangular Pd₃L₃ macrocycles bridged by six L' ligands. A related but significantly larger [Pd₆L₆L'₆](BF₄)₁₂ cage was obtained by using metalloligands instead of organic dipyridyl ligands.

Two-Step Synthesis of Linear and Bent Dicarboxylic Acid Metalloligands with Lengths of up to 3 nm

Nanometer-sized polycarboxylate ligands are interesting building blocks for metallasupramolecular chemistry, but access to these compounds is often limited by complicated synthetic pathways. Here, we describe a simple two-step protocol, which allows preparing linear and bent dicarboxylate ligands with lengths of up to 3 nm from commercially available compounds. The ligands are prepared by iron-templated polycondensation reactions involving arylboronic acids and nioxime. The final products contain two iron clathrochelate complexes and two terminal carboxyphenylene groups. To demonstrate that the new ligands are suitable for the construction of more complex molecular nanostructures, we have prepared a Cu-based metal-organic polyhedron, which represents the largest M₄L₄ cage described so far.

Highly Selective Room-Temperature Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling of Bromo-2-sulfonyloxypyridines for Unsymmetrical Diarylpyridines

A new and mild synthetic approach has been developed for the synthesis of pharmaceutically important unsymmetrical diarylpyridines via chemoselective Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions of bromo-2-sulfonyloxypyridines. Most reactions allow for facile access to aryl-2-sulfonyloxypyridines at room temperature in yields of 5-99% with excellent chemoselectivity in the presence of Pd(OAc)₂ (2.0 mol %) and Ad₂BnP (2.4 mol %). The second arylation of the remaining tosyl or triflyl group in the monoarylpyridine derivatives obtained was successfully accomplished for the synthesis of unsymmetrical 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,5-, and 2,6-diarylpyridine derivatives. Furthermore, a one-pot synthesis of unsymmetrical diarylpyridines starting from bromo-2-sulfonyloxypyridine was accomplished to demonstrate the practical convenience. Finally, with this method, an antibacterial agent, a topoisomerase inhibitor, and etoricoxib, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, were successfully synthesized from the corresponding bromo-2-hydroxypyridines in overall yields of 80, 86, and 49%, respectively.

Solvent-Induced Encapsulation of Cobalt(II) Ion by a Boron-Capped tris-Pyrazoloximate

Boron-cross-linked cobalt(II) pseudoclathrochelate was obtained by the template reaction of 2-acetylpyrazoloxime, phenylboronic acid, and a new DMF cobalt(II) solvato complex with a decachloro-closo-decaborate dianion. As confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, this complex crystallizes with two symmetry-independent cobalt(II) pseudoclathrochelate cations, one decachloro-closo-decaborate dianion, one benzene, one dichloromethane solvent molecule, and two molecules of DMF. The latter act as pseudocapping fragments to the monocapped tris-pyrazoloximate ligands by forming N-H···O hydrogen bonds with their pyrazole groups. The Co^IIN₆-coordination polyhedra adopt a nearly ideal TP geometry with distortion angles φ equal to 1.22(16) and 2.58(17)° for two symmetry-independent pseudoclathrochelate cations, both containing the encapsulated cobalt(II) ion in its high-spin state (Co-N 2.115(4)-2.198(3) Å). Magnetic properties of this complex were studied both by dc-magnetometry and by solution-state NMR spectroscopy to reveal a high magnetic anisotropy, thus suggesting a large magnetic susceptibility tensor anisotropy (25.8 × 10^-32 m³ at 298 K) and a large negative zero-field splitting energy (-85 cm^-1). The results of magnetometry studies in the ac magnetic field suggest a single molecule magnet behavior of this TP complex with an effective magnetization reversal barrier of approximately 130 cm^-1. Its pseudocapping DMF molecules that form H-bonds with tris-pyrazoloximate fragments are easy to substitute by strong H-bond acceptors, such as chloride ions and di- and tetramethylureas, thus affecting the magnetic properties of a whole pseudomacrobicyclic paramagnetic system.

Porous networks based on iron(ii) clathrochelate complexes

Microporous networks based on boronate ester-capped iron(ii) clathrochelate complexes are described. The networks were obtained by covalent cross-linking of tetrabrominated clathrochelate complexes via Suzuki-Miyaura polycross-coupling reactions with diboronic acids, or by Sonogashira-Hagihara polycross-coupling of clathrochelate complexes with terminal alkyne functions and 1,3,5-tribromobenzene. The networks display permanent porosity with apparent Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas of up to SABET = 593 m2 g-1. A clathrochelate complex based on an enantiopure dioximato ligand was used to prepare chiral networks. One of these networks was shown to preferentially absorb d-tryptophan over l-tryptophan.

Clathrochelate Metalloligands in Supramolecular Chemistry and Materials Science

The term "clathrochelate" describes a complex in which a coordinatively saturated metal ion is surrounded by a macropolycyclic ligand. First examples of clathrochelate complexes were reported 50 years ago. Meanwhile, the synthesis and reactivity of clathrochelates have been investigated in detail, and numerous applications have been explored. In this Account, we summarize work on the utilization of transition metal clathrochelates as metalloligands in supramolecular chemistry and materials science, with special focus on results from our group. First, we discuss the chemistry of boron-capped clathrochelates. These complexes are facile to synthesize by metal-templated condensation reactions. The synthesis is modular, and it is straightforward to implement structural variations. Importantly, it is possible to attach functional groups such as amines, pyridines, or carboxylic acids to the ligand periphery. Other noteworthy features of boron-capped clathrochelates are high thermodynamic and kinetic stability, tunable redox potential, and good solubility. Next, we show that clathrochelate-based metalloligands can be used to build molecularly defined metal-ligand assemblies of nanoscale dimensions. Different molecular architectures are described, including coordination cages with unusual gyrobifastigium or square orthobicupola-like structures. Metalloligands containing multiple clathrochelate complexes are particularly well suited to build large metal-ligand assemblies (>3 nm) with minimal synthetic efforts. Boron-capped clathrochelates have also been investigated in the context of materials chemistry. Linear or cross-linked clathrochelate polymers were found to display permanent porosity. Furthermore, such polymers were used to prepare conducting films on electrodes. Clathrochelate metalloligands are well suited to prepare metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The high stability of clathrochelates ensures compatibility with harsh reaction conditions, and it mitigates potential problems such as exchange reactions. Boron-capped clathrochelates can be decorated with functional groups in lateral and apical position, and it is possible to use these complexes as multiconnected nodes in polymeric structures. Overall, we hope to convey the utility of clathrochelate complexes in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. The work published thus far gives a first glimpse of the potential of these compounds, but there are other directions, which are waiting to be explored. For example, it will be interesting to study the properties of nanostructures based on chiral clathrochelate complexes. Furthermore, the redox and magnetic properties of clathrochelates may give rise to novel functional materials. Given that clathrochelates are straightforward to prepare, we hope that others will join the efforts to explore the supramolecular and materials chemistry of these interesting molecular building blocks.

Sulfate Donor Based Dinuclear Heteroleptic Triple-Stranded Helicates from Sulfite and Ditopic Nitrogen Donor Ligands and Their Transformation to Dinuclear Homoleptic Double-Stranded Mesocates

Sulfate donor based supramolecular coordination complexes [{ fac-Re(CO)₃}(μ-SO₄)(L ⁿ)₂{ fac-Re(CO)₃}] (1-3) were obtained using ditopic N donors (L ⁿ; n = 1-3), NaHSO₃, and Re₂(CO)₁₀ in a one-pot, multicomponent, coordination-driven self-assembly approach, in which SO₃^2- becomes oxidized to SO₄^2- during the reaction and acts as a building framework. Complexes 1-3 were characterized using IR, ESI-TOF-MS, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The structures of complexes 1-3 were confirmed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The transformation of the dinuclear heteroleptic triple-stranded helicate to the dinuclear homoleptic double-stranded mesocate [{Re(CO)₃Cl}₂(L ⁿ)₂] (L ⁿ = L¹, L², L³; 4a-6a) was achieved by the addition of BaCl₂. The direct treatment of Re(CO)₅X (X = Cl, Br) with L¹/L²/L³ yielded the dinuclear homoleptic double-stranded helicates [{Re(CO)₃X}₂ (L ⁿ)₂] (4b-6b and 7-9).

Self-assembled orthoester cryptands: orthoester scope, post-functionalization, kinetic locking and tunable degradation kinetics

Dynamic adaptability and biodegradability are key features of functional, 21st century host-guest systems. We have recently discovered a class of tripodal supramolecular hosts, in which two orthoesters act as constitutionally dynamic bridgeheads. Having previously demonstrated the adaptive nature of these hosts, we now report the synthesis and characterization - including eight solid state structures - of a diverse set of orthoester cages, which provides evidence for the broad scope of this new host class. With the same set of compounds, we demonstrated that the rates of orthoester exchange and hydrolysis can be tuned over a remarkably wide range, from rapid hydrolysis at pH 8 to nearly inert at pH 1, and that the Taft parameter of the orthoester substituent allows an adequate prediction of the reaction kinetics. Moreover, the synthesis of an alkyne-capped cryptand enabled the post-functionalization of orthoester cryptands by Sonogashira and CuAAC "click" reactions. The methylation of the resulting triazole furnished a cryptate that was kinetically inert towards orthoester exchange and hydrolysis at pH > 1, which is equivalent to the "turnoff" of constitutionally dynamic imines by means of reduction. These findings indicate that orthoester cages may be more broadly useful than anticipated, e.g. as drug delivery agents with precisely tunable biodegradability or, thanks to the kinetic locking strategy, as ion sensors.

An Efficient Synthesis of Arylated Pyridines from Conjugated Acetylenes and Substituted Benzylamines Catalyzed by Base

An efficient base-catalyzed synthesis of arylated pyridines has been disclosed. This reaction involving conjugated acetylenes and substituted benzylamines proceeded smoothly, giving rise to tri-aryl substituted pyridines which are biologically relevant compounds in good to excellent yields in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) under air at 140 °C with K₂CO₃ as catalyst.

PdII2L4-type coordination cages up to three nanometers in size

The utilization of large ligands in coordination-based self-assembly represents an attractive strategy for the construction of supramolecular assemblies more than two nanometers in size. However, the implementation of this strategy is hampered by the fact that the preparation of such ligands often requires substantial synthetic effort. Herein, we describe a simple one-step protocol, which allows large bipyridyl ligands with a bent shape to be synthesized from easily accessible and/or commercially available starting materials. The ligands were used to construct PdII2L4-type coordination cages of unprecedented size. Furthermore, we provide evidence that these cages may be stabilized by close intramolecular packing of lipophilic ligand side chains. Packing effects of this kind are frequently encountered in protein assemblies, but they are seldom used as a design element in metallasupramolecular chemistry.

On rhenium(i)–silver(i) cyanide porous macrocyclic clusters

Photofunctional multinuclear rhenium(i) diimine carbonyl complexes

In this review, we summarize the synthesis, photophysical properties and applications of a wide variety of multinuclear complexes consisting of Re(i)-diimine-carbonyl units.

Rhenium(I)-Based Monocyclic and Bicyclic Phosphine Oxide-Coordinated Supramolecular Complexes

Neutral, flexible ditopic phosphine (P-P) or phosphine oxide (O=P-P=O) donors, rigid anionic bis-chelating oxygen donors, and Re₂(CO)₁₀ were used to assemble ten phosphine oxide (P=O)-donor-based neutral monocyclic M₂LL'-, bicyclic M₄L₂L″-, and bicyclic M₄LL'₂-type supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs). A soft ditopic phosphine donor was transformed into a hard ditopic phosphine oxide donor, during the formation of the cyclic complexes 1-3, 5-6, and 9-10. Complexes 4, 7, and 8 were obtained using a hard P=O donor ligand. These SCCs were characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The absorption properties of 1-8 were studied using absorption UV-vis spectroscopic methods, and the results were analyzed using theoretical calculations. The results revealed that the neutral P=O donor significantly influenced the photophysical properties by enhancing the absorption coefficient in the visible region.

Internal dynamics and guest binding of a sterically overcrowded host

Substituent control in self-assembled host systems allows for a fine-tuning of structure, dynamics and guest preference. Flat banana-shaped ligands L1 assemble with Pd(ii) cations into the interpenetrated coordination cage dimer [3BF4@Pd4L18], capable of sequential guest uptake. In contrast, the introduction of bulky adamantyl groups in ligand L2 prevents dimerization and results in the clean formation of monomeric cage species [Pd2L24]. Owing to steric crowding, the adamantyl substituent is considerably bent sideways with respect to the ligand backbone, and is rapidly flipping between both faces of the free ligand giving rise to two energetically degenerate conformers. Surprisingly, the flipping is preserved in the cage, albeit at a lower rate due to entropic reasons. Despite the very dense packing within the self-assembled structure, the cage is able to encapsulate a series of bis-anionic guests in an induced-fit fashion. Electronic structure calculations revealed a substantial contribution from dispersion interactions between the guest and the surrounding adamantyl groups that stabilize the host-guest complex. Guest exchange kinetics were quantified and the influence that encapsulated guests imparted on the ligand flipping dynamics was examined by a series of 2D NMR experiments. Four synchrotron X-ray structures of the cage and its host-guest complexes are presented, allowing for unprecedented insight into the host-guest interactions of a sterically overcrowded host and its guest-induced distortion.

Ligand Aspect Ratio as a Decisive Factor for the Self-Assembly of Coordination Cages

It is possible to control the geometry and the composition of metallasupramolecular assemblies via the aspect ratio of their ligands. This point is demonstrated for a series of iron- and palladium-based coordination cages. Functionalized clathrochelate complexes with variable aspect ratios were used as rod-like metalloligands. A cubic Fe(II)8L12 cage was obtained from a metalloligand with an intermediate aspect ratio. By increasing the length or by decreasing the width of the ligand, the self-assembly process resulted in the clean formation of tetrahedral Fe(II)4L6 cages instead of cubic cages. In a related fashion, it was possible to control the geometry of Pd(II)-based coordination cages. A metalloligand with a large aspect ratio gave an entropically favored tetrahedral Pd(II)4L8 assembly, whereas an octahedral Pd(II)6L12 cage was formed with a ligand of the same length but with an increased width. The aspect ratio can also be used to control the composition of dynamic mixtures of Pd(II) cages. Out of two metalloligands with only marginally different aspect ratios, one gave rise to a self-sorted collection of Pd(II)4L8 and Pd(II)6L12 cages, whereas the other did not.

Surface functionalization of dinuclear clathrochelates via Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions: facile synthesis of polypyridyl metalloligands

Clathrochelates can be decorated with pyridyl groups by cross-coupling reactions. They represent interesting ligands for supramolecular chemistry and materials science.

Large heterometallic coordination cages with gyrobifastigium-like geometry

Large coordination cages with unusual gyrobifastigium-like geometry were obtained by combining cis-blocked Pt^II or Pd^II complexes with clathrochelate-based metalloligands.

One-pot synthesis of 2,4,6-triarylpyridines from β-nitrostyrenes, substituted salicylic aldehydes and ammonium acetate

The diversity-oriented synthesis of 2,4,6-trisubstituted pyridines via K₂CO₃-promoted multicomponent reactions of the β-nitrostyrenes, available substituted salicylic aldehydes and ammonium acetate have been developed.

Heterometallic Rings: Their Physics and use as Supramolecular Building Blocks

An enormous family of heterometallic rings has been made. The first were Cr7 M rings where M = Ni(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and rings have been made with as many as fourteen metal centers in the cyclic structure. They are bridged externally by carboxylates, and internally by fluorides or a penta-deprotonated polyol. The size of the rings is controlled through templates which have included a range of ammonium or imidazolium ions, alkali metals and coordination compounds. The rings can be functionalized to act as ligands, and incorporated into hybrid organic-inorganic rotaxanes and into molecules containing up to 200 metal centers. Physical studies reported include: magnetic measurements, inelastic neutron scattering (including single crystal measurements), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (including measurements of phase memory times), NMR spectroscopy (both solution and solid state), and polarized neutron diffraction. The rings are hence ideal for understanding magnetism in elegant exchange-coupled systems.

A Functional Group Approach for Prediction of APPI Response of Organic Synthetic Targets

Atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) is a technique of choice for ionization of non-polar molecules in mass spectrometry (MS). Reported APPI-based studies tend to focus on a selected compound class, which may contain a variety of functional groups. These studies demonstrate that APPI response frequently differs substantially, indicating a certain dependence on the functional group present. Although this dependence could be employed for APPI response prediction, its systematic use is currently absent. Here, we apply APPI MS to a judiciously-compiled set of 63 compounds containing a number of diverse functional groups commonly utilized in synthesis, reactive functional groups, as well as those containing boron and silicon. Based on the outcome of APPI MS of these compounds, we propose and evaluate a simple guideline to estimate the APPI response for a novel compound, the key properties of which have not been characterized in the gas phase. Briefly, we first identify key functional groups in the compound and gather knowledge on the known ionization energies from the smallest analogues containing said functional groups. We then consider local inductive and resonance effects on said ionization energies for the compounds of interest to estimate the APPI response. Finally, application of APPI MS to compounds of interest considered herein demonstrated extended upper mass ionization limit of 3.5 kDa for non-polymeric compounds.
