Straightforward access to mono- and bis-cycloplatinated helicenes that display circularly polarized phosphorescence using crystallization resolution methods

Enantiopure [6]-Azairidahelicene by Dynamic Kinetic Resolution of a Configurationally Labile [4]-Helicene

A pair of enantiopure [6]-azairidahelicenes incorporating chirality at the metal center and on the helicenic ligand were synthesized by dynamic kinetic resolution (dkr) of a configurationally labile [4]-helicenic ligand (4-(2-pyridyl)-benzo[g]phenanthrene, L1H) using bis-cyclometalated chiral-at-metal only iridium(III) precursors as chiral inductors. The origin of the observed dkr is attributed to the different conformation and stability of diastereomeric reaction intermediates formed during the cyclometalation process. The isolated enantiomers exhibited circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP), with |gphos| values of 1.8×10-3.

Boron-containing helicenes as new generation of chiral materials: opportunities and challenges of leaving the flatland

Increased interest in chiral functional dyes has stimulated activity in the field of boron-containing helicenes over the past few years. Despite the fact that the introduction of boron endows π-conjugated scaffolds with attractive electronic and optical properties, boron helicenes have long remained underdeveloped compared to other helicenes containing main group elements. The main reason was the lack of reliable synthetic protocols to access these scaffolds. The construction of boron helicenes proceeds against steric strain, and thus the methods developed for planar systems have sometimes proven ineffective in their synthesis. Recent advances in the general boron chemistry and the synthesis of strained derivatives have opened the way to a wide variety of boron-containing helicenes. Although the number of helically chiral derivatives is still limited, these compounds are currently at the forefront of emissive materials for circularly-polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Yet the design of good emitters is not a trivial task. In this perspective, we discuss a number of requirements that must be met to provide an excellent emissive material. These include chemical and configurational stability, emission quantum yields, luminescence dissymmetry factors, and color purity. Understanding of these parameters and some structure-property relationships should aid in the rational design of superior boron helicenes. We also present the main achievements in their synthesis and point out niches in this area, e.g. stereoselective synthesis, necessary to accelerate the development of this fascinating class of compounds and to realize their potential in OLED devices and in other fields.

Linker-dependent control of the chiroptical properties of polymethylene-vaulted trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) complexes

The effects of polymethylene bridges on the chiroptical properties of trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms were examined both experimentally and theoretically using newly designed planar chiral Pt analogues (1) having three-dimensional superstructures. A series of optically pure polymethylene-vaulted Pt complexes (R)- and (S)-1 were synthesized and characterized with regard to the chiroptical behaviour of the trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms. These complexes were found to exhibit structure-dependent chiroptical characteristics in solution, such that the absolute values of specific rotation, the circular dichroism dissymmetry factor (gabs) and the circularly polarized luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) all increased upon shortening the polymethylene bridges. Density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory calculations were used to analyse vaulted and non-vaulted complexes, which demonstrated that the present linker-dependent chiroptical properties resulted from constraint-induced changes in the square planar Pt coordination centres rather than from chiral distortion along the coordination platforms.

Chiral π-Conjugated Double Helical Aminyl Diradical with the Triplet Ground State

We report a neutral high-spin diradical of chiral C2-symmetric bis[5]diazahelicene with ΔEST ≈ 0.4 kcal mol-1, as determined by EPR spectroscopy/SQUID magnetometry. The diradical is the most persistent among all high-spin aminyl radicals reported to date by a factor of 20, with a half-life of up to 6 days in 2-MeTHF at room temperature. Its triplet ground state and excellent persistence may be associated with the unique spin density distribution within the dihydrophenazine moiety, which characterizes two effective 3-electron C-N bonds analogous to the N-O bond of a nitroxide radical. The enantiomerically enriched (ee ≥ 94%) (MM)- and (PP)-enantiomers of the precursors to the diradicals are obtained by either preparative chiral supercritical fluid chromatography or resolution via functionalization with the chiral auxiliary of the C2-symmetric racemic tetraamine. The barrier for the racemization of the solid tetraamine is ΔG‡ = 43 ± 0.01 kcal mol-1 in the 483-523 K range. The experimentally estimated lower limit of the barrier for the racemization of a diradical, ΔG‡ ≥ 26 kcal mol-1 in 2-MeTHF at 293 K, is comparable to the DFT-determined barrier of ΔG‡ = 31 kcal mol-1 in the gas phase at 298 K. While the enantiomerically pure tetraamine displays strong chiroptical properties, with anisotropy factor |g| = |Δε|/ε = 0.036 at 376 nm, |g| ≈ 0.005 at 548 nm of the high-spin diradical is comparable to that recently reported triplet ground-state diradical dication. Notably, the radical anion intermediate in the generation of diradical exhibits a large SOMO-HOMO inversion, SHI = 35 kcal mol-1.

Circularly polarized phosphorescence with a large dissymmetry factor from a helical platinum(II) complex

A chiral platinum(II) complex with a helical Schiff-base [4]helicene ligand exhibits intense red circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) with a glum of 0.010 in the dilute solution state. The intense CPP was caused by a change in the electronic transition character based on the induction of the helical structure.

Kinetically Controlled Structural Modulation of the Self-Assembled Silver Nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with atomic precision are growing into a fascinating class of building blocks for supramolecular chemistry. What makes it more interesting is the enhanced optical properties of the ordered structures, including aggregation-induced emission (AIE). However, algorithm dictating the self-assembly of metal NCs in multicomponent environment remains largely unknown, and effective means to manipulate the self-assembly is still lacking, especially under kinetic control. Herein, nanofibers which contain sub-1 nm nanowires and exhibit circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) are obtained from crystallization-induced self-assembly (CISA) of water-soluble, negatively charged silver NCs (Ag9 -NCs) in the presence of glutamic acid (Glu). By the introduction of a positively-charged additive (choline chloride, CC), the structure of the nanowires is modulated and the lateral interaction between adjacent nanofibers is adjusted, leading to simultaneous improvement of the phosphorescence and chirality which finally enhances CPP. Importantly, changing the time at which CC is introduced altered the kinetic pathway of the CISA, which enables to effectively manipulate both the final structures of the self-assembled Ag9 -NCs and the output of the optical signals.

Crystalline, Porous Helicene Covalent Organic Frameworks

Helicenes are a class of fascinating chiral helical molecules with rich chemistry developed continuously over the past 100 years. Their helical, conjugated, and twisted structures make them attractive for constructing molecular systems. However, studies over the past century are mainly focused on synthesizing helicenes with increased numbers of aromatic rings and complex heterostructures, while research on inorganic, organic, and polymeric helicene materials is still embryonic. Herein, we report the first examples of helicene covalent organic frameworks, i.e., [7]Helicene sp2 c-COF-1, by condensing [7]Helicene dialdehyde with trimethyl triazine via the C=C bond formation reaction under solvothermal conditions. The resultant [7]Helicene sp2 c-COF-1 exhibits prominent X-ray diffraction peaks and assumes a highly ordered 2D lattice structure originated from the twisted configuration of [7]Helicene unit. The C=C linked [7]Helicene sp2 c-COF-1 materials exhibited extended π conjugation and broadly tuned their absorption, emission, redox activity, photoconductivity, and light-emitting activity, demonstrating rich multifunctionalities and great potentials in developing various applications. This work opens a way to a new family of COFs as well as helicene materials, enabling the exploration of unprecedented π architectures and properties.

Deep-Blue Narrowband Hetero[6]helicenes Showing Circularly Polarized Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Toward High-Performance OLEDs

Helicenes exhibit substantial potential as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active molecules. However, their application in circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) is typically hindered by the challenge of integrating both high color purity and efficient triplet-harvesting capability, particularly in the blue spectral region. Herein, a series of hetero[6]helicene-based emitters that is strategically engineered through the helical extension of a deep-blue double-boron-based multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) motif, is introduced. Importantly, the helical extension does not cause apparent structural deformation or perturb frontier molecular orbitals; thus, preserving the deep-blue emission and MR-TADF characteristics of the parent molecule. This approach also leads to reduced reorganization energy, resulting in emitters with narrower linewidth and higher photoluminescence quantum yield. Further, the helical motif enhances the racemization barrier and leads to improved CPL performance with luminescence dissymmetry factor values up to 1.5 × 10-3 . Exploiting these merits, devices incorporating the chiral dopants demonstrate deep-blue emission within the Broadcast Service Television 2020 color-gamut range, record external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) up to 29.3%, and have distinctive circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) signals. Overall, the authors' findings underscore the helical extension as a promising strategy for designing narrowband chiroptical materials and advancing high-definition displays.

Enhancing Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence via Integrated Top-Down and Bottom-Up Approach

In the dynamic domain of chiroptical technologies, it is imperative to engineer emitters endowed with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. This research demonstrates an advancement by employing a combined top-down and bottom-up strategy for the simultaneous amplification of photoluminescence quantum yield (Φ) and the luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum ). Square-planar Pt(II) complexes form helical assemblies, driven by torsional strain induced by bis(nonyl) chains. Integration of chiral anions leads these assemblies to prefer distinct helical sense. This arrangement activates the metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) transition that is CPL-active, with Φ and |glum | observing an upswing contingent on the charge number and aryl substituents in chiral anions. Utilizing the soft-lithographic micromolding in capillaries technique, we could fabricate exquisitely-ordered, one-dimensional co-assemblies to achieve the metrics to Φ of 0.32 and |glum | of 0.13. Finally, our spectroscopic research elucidates the underlying mechanism for the dual amplification, making a significant stride in the advancement of CPL-active emitters.

Towards Fast Circularly Polarized Luminescence in 2-Coordinate Chiral Mechanochromic Copper(I) Carbene Complexes

A series of chiral mechanochromic copper(I) cAAC (cAAC=cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene) complexes with a variety of amide ligands have been studied with regard to their photophysical and chiroptical properties to elucidate structure-property relationships for the design of efficient triplet exciton emitters exhibiting circularly polarized luminescence. Depending on the environment, which determines the excited state energies, either thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) from 1/3 LLCT states or phosphorescence from 3 LLCT/LC states occurs. However, neither chiral moieties at the carbene nor at the carbazolate ligands provide detectable luminescence dissymmetries glum . An exception is [Cu(phenoxazinyl)(cAAC)], showing orange to deep red TADF with λmax =601-715 nm in solution, powders and in PMMA. In this case, the amide ligand can undergo distortions in the excited state. This design motif leads to the first linear, non-aggregated CPL-active copper(I) complex with glum of -3.4 ⋅ 10-3 combined with a high radiative rate constant of 6.7 ⋅ 105  s-1 .

DNA-induced circularly polarized luminescence of helicene racemates

Enantiopure helicenes have been extensively investigated due to their outstanding chiroptical properties, while helicene racemates are considered as chiroptically silent. Here, we describe a facile method to produce circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from helicene racemates via supramolecular association with DNA in aqueous solution. Racemic cationic helicene derivatives are immobilized in the grooves of commercially available double-stranded right-handed DNA, and the discrimination of left- and right-handed helicenes by chiral DNA is monitored by single molecule force spectroscopy. This subsequently leads to the generation of prominent CPL with dissymmetric factor |glum | of close to 0.01, which is approximate to enantiopure helicenes. The strategy developed in this work avoids the tedious and expensive chiral resolution process and provides a distinctive insight into the fabrication of CPL-emitting systems.

Chiroptical Response Control of Planar and Axially Chiral Polymethylene-Vaulted Platinum(II) Complexes Bearing 1,1'-Binaphthyl Frameworks

In this study, the synthesis, structure, and chiroptical response control of planar chiral polymethylene-vaulted trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)aryloxy]platinum(II) complexes bearing axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl ligands are described. A series of enantiopure polymethylene (n = 4-10)-vaulted complexes were prepared in 6 steps using commercially available (R)- or (S)-BINOL as the starting material without an optical resolution process. The trans-coordination and three-dimensional vaulted structures of the platinum complexes were elucidated from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The complexes were found to show structural dependence of chiroptical responses in the dilute solution state such that the absolute values of [α]D, dissymmetry factors gabs in circular dichroism (CD), and glum in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) increased upon shortening the length of the polymethylene bridges. The enhanced chiroptical responses were theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations, and the results are discussed in terms of the molecular structures and transition dipole moments of the ground states. The structural dependence of the chiroptical responses was ascribed to the distortion of the coordination platforms caused by restriction of the vaulting methylene linkers.

Helical Bilayer Nanographenes: Impact of the Helicene Length on the Structural, Electrochemical, Photophysical, and Chiroptical Properties

Helical bilayer nanographenes (HBNGs) are chiral π-extended aromatic compounds consisting of two π-π stacked hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) joined by a helicene, thus resembling van der Waals layered 2D materials. Herein, we compare [9]HBNG, [10]HBNG, and [11]HBNG helical bilayers endowed with [9], [10], and [11]helicenes embedded in their structure, respectively. Interestingly, the helicene length defines the overlapping degree between the two HBCs (number of benzene rings involved in π-π interactions between the two layers), being 26, 14, and 10 benzene rings, respectively, according to the X-ray analysis. Unexpectedly, the electrochemical study shows that the lesser π-extended system [9]HBNG shows the strongest electron donor character, in part by interlayer exchange resonance, and more red-shifted values of emission. Furthermore, [9]HBNG also shows exceptional chiroptical properties with the biggest values of g_abs and g_lum (3.6 × 10^-2) when compared to [10]HBNG and [11]HBNG owing to the fine alignment in the configuration of [9]HBNG between its electric and magnetic dipole transition moments. Furthermore, spectroelectrochemical studies as well as the fluorescence spectroscopy support the aforementioned experimental findings, thus confirming the strong impact of the helicene length on the properties of this new family of bilayer nanographenes.

Circularly polarized luminescence of helicenes: A data-informed insight

Helicenes are an interesting scaffold for chiroptical properties and in particular circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In this short review, we collect the luminescence (g_lum ) and absorption (g_abs ) dissymmetry factors associated to the first Cotton effect of the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectrum. Considering the data for 170 [n]-helicenes (n = 4-11), overall we found reasonable correlations between g_lum and g_abs . Despite a few notable exceptions, this would confirm a similarity in the stereochemistry of the ground and emitting excited states for most helicenes. These results may be useful in rationalizing chiroptical data and help chemists in designing new helicene structures with the desired CPL properties.

Mechano-Stimulus and Environment-Dependent Circularly Polarized TADF in Chiral Copper(I) Complexes and Their Application in OLEDs

Molecular emitters that combine circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and high radiative rate constants of the triplet exciton decay are highly attractive for electroluminescent devices (OLEDs) or next-generation photonic applications, such as spintronics, quantum computing, cryptography, or sensors. However, the design of such emitters is a major challenge because the criteria for enhancing these two properties are mutually exclusive. In this contribution, we show that enantiomerically pure {Cu(Cbz^R)[(S/R)-BINAP]} [R = H (1), 3,6-tBu (2)] are efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters with high radiative rate constants of k_TADF up to 3.1 × 10⁵ s^-1 from ^1/3LLCT states according to our temperature-dependent time-resolved luminescence studies. The efficiency of the TADF process and emission wavelengths are highly sensitive to environmental hydrogen bonding of the ligands, which can be disrupted by grinding of the crystalline materials. The origin of this pronounced mechano-stimulus photophysical behavior is a thermal equilibrium between the ^1/3LLCT states and a ³LC state of the BINAP ligand, which depends on the relative energetic order of the excited states and is prone to inter-ligand C-H···π interactions. The copper(I) complexes are also efficient CPL emitters displaying exceptional dissymmetry values g_lum of up to ±0.6 × 10^-2 in THF solution and ±2.1 × 10^-2 in the solid state. Importantly for application in electroluminescence devices, the C-H···π interactions can also be disrupted by employing sterically bulky matrices. Accordingly, we have investigated various matrix materials for successful implementation of the chiral copper(I) TADF emitters in proof-of-concept CP-OLEDs.

Low-Temperature Luminescence in Organic Helicenes: Singlet versus Triplet State Circularly Polarized Emission

The experimental measurement of the photophysical and chiroptical properties of helicene-based π-conjugated emitters with electron-accepting (-CN, -py, -NO₂) or donating (TMS, NMe₂, NH₂) moieties is reported at low temperature (77 K). The samples exhibit strong circularly polarized phosphorescence in frozen solution of 2-MeTHF, with a luminescence dissymmetry factor reaching 1.6 × 10^-2 and a lifetime of over 0.46 s for the most active molecule, the nitro compound. The theoretical investigation shows that although the singlet (S₁) and triplet (T₁) excited-state emissions mainly arise from the helicene core, the rotatory strengths of the spin-allowed versus spin-forbidden emission have opposite signs. Further analysis of the spin-orbit coupling matrix elements shows that there is no strong mixing between S₁ and T₁, justifying the different signs of the rotatory strengths. In the case of the nitro compound, the enhanced phosphorescence emission is due to an efficient intersystem crossing.

Circularly polarized luminescence of pinene-modified tetradentate platinum(II) enantiomers containing fused 5/6/6 metallocycles

In this study, a couple of tetradentate Pt(II) enantiomers ((−)-1 and (+)-1) and a couple of tetradentate Pt(IV) enantiomers ((−)-2 and (+)-2) containing fused 5/6/6 metallocycles have been synthesized by controlling reaction conditions. Two valence forms could transform into each other through mild chemical oxidants and reductants. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirms the structures of (−)-1 and (−)-2. The coordination sphere of the Pt(II) cation in (−)-1 displays a distorted square-planar geometry and a platinum centroid helix chirality. In contrast, the structure of (−)-2 reveals a distorted octahedral geometry. The solution and the solid of (−)-1 are highly luminescent. Complex (−)-1 shows a prominent aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) behavior in DMSO/water solution with emission quantum yield (Φ_em) up to 73.2%. Furthermore, highly phosphorescent Pt(II) enantiomers exhibit significant circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with a dissymmetry factor (g_lum) of order 10⁻³ in CH₂Cl₂ solutions at room temperature. Symmetrically appreciable CPL signals are observed for the enantiomers (−)-1 and (+)-1.

Triple Regioselective Functionalization of Cationic [4]Helicenes via Iridium-Catalyzed Borylation and Suzuki Cross-Coupling Reactivity

In essentially one-pot, using Ir- and Pd-catalysis, tris(arene)-functionalized cationic [4]helicenes are synthesized with full regioselectivity and enantiospecificity starting from a trivial precursor (17 examples). This poly-addition of aryl groups improves key optical properties, that is, fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. Electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signatures are observed up to the far-red domain, in particular with additional arenes prone to aggregation.

Research Progress of Intramolecular π-Stacked Small Molecules for Device Applications

Organic semiconductors can be designed and constructed in π-stacked structures instead of the conventional π-conjugated structures. Through-space interaction (TSI) occurs in π-stacked optoelectronic materials. Thus, unlike electronic coupling along the conjugated chain, the functional groups can stack closely to facilitate spatial electron communication. Using π-stacked motifs, chemists and materials scientists can find new ways for constructing materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE), thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), as well as enhanced molecular conductance. Organic optoelectronic devices based on π-stacked molecules have exhibited very promising performance, with some of them exceeding π-conjugated analogues. Recently, reports on various organic π-stacked structures have grown rapidly, prompting this review. Representative molecular scaffolds and newly developed π-stacked systems could stimulate more attention on through-space charge transfer the well-known through-bond charge transfer. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for utilizing and improving particular materials are discussed. The previous achievements and upcoming prospects may provide new insights into the theory, materials, and devices in the field of organic semiconductors.

Optical Activity of Spin-Forbidden Electronic Transitions in Metal Complexes from Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory with Spin-Orbit Coupling

The calculation of magnetic transition dipole moments and rotatory strengths was implemented at the zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) two-component relativistic time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) level. The circular dichroism of the spin-forbidden ligand-field transitions of tris(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) computed in this way agrees very well with available measurements. Phosphorescence dissymmetry factors g lum and the corresponding lifetimes are evaluated for three N-heterocyclic-carbene-based iridium complexes, two of which contain helicene moieties, and for two platinahelicenes. The agreement with experimental data is satisfactory. The calculations reproduce the signs and order of magnitude of g lum , and the large variations of phosphorescence lifetimes among the systems. The electron spin contribution to the magnetic transition dipole moment is shown to be important in all of the computations.

[5]Helicene-based chiral triarylboranes with large luminescence dissymmetry factors over a 10-2 level: synthesis and design strategy via isomeric tuning of steric substitutions

Constructing chiral luminescent systems with both large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) and high luminous efficiency has been considered a great challenge. We herein describe a highly efficient approach to sterically stabilize the helical configurations of carbo[5]helicenes for improved CPL properties in a series of π-donor and π-acceptor substituted [5]helicenes (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Enabled by the ortho-installation of methyl groups as well as the steric effects of triarylamine (Ar₃N) and triarylborane (Ar₃B) handles in meta-substituted [5]helicenes, their optical resolution into enantiomers has been accomplished using preparative chiral HPLC. The molecular chirality of [5]helicenes can be transferred to Ar₃B and Ar₃N as light emitters, which allowed further investigations of their chiroptics, including optical rotation, circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Remarkably, 4 has been demonstrated to display dramatically enhanced CPL performance with a much larger g_lum (>1.2 × 10^-2) and an increased emission quantum efficiency (Φ_S = 0.75) compared with the other analogues, as a result of the isomeric tuning of substitutions with differential steric and electronic effects. These experimentally observed CPL activities were rationalized by TD-DFT computations for the angle (θ_μ,m) between electric and magnetic transition dipole moments in the excited states. In addition, the conspicuous intramolecular donor-acceptor charge transfer led to thermal responses in the emissions of 2 and 4 over a broad temperature range.

Enhancement of Chiroptical Responses of trans-Bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) Complexes with Distorted Square Planar Coordination Geometry

The relationship between the coordination geometry and photophysical properties of trans‐bis[(β‐iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A series of platinum(II) complexes with differently substituted iminomethyl groups were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were examined in solution, in the crystalline, and in the PMMA film‐dispersed state, respectively (PMMA=poly(methyl methacrylate)). These complexes showed structure‐dependent emission spectra, in which the color of the luminescence in the crystalline state varied over a range of about 40 nm depending on the specific bowl‐shaped molecular structure. The chiral complexes with (R,R)‐ and (S,S)‐configurations were found to have structure‐dependent chiroptical properties both in solution and the PMMA film‐dispersed state such that the intensity of circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) were enhanced with bulky cyclic substituents at the nitrogen atoms. A theoretical study using density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent (TD)‐DFT calculations revealed that the enhancement of chiroptical responses is due to the amplification of the magnetic dipole moment caused by the distortion of the square planar geometry.

Helical donor-acceptor platinum complexes displaying dual luminescence and near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence

A series of chiral platina[5]helicenes displaying dual luminescence, i.e., fluorescence between 450 and 600 nm and red/NIR phosphorescence between 700 and 900 nm, has been synthesised, characterised and studied by first-principle calculations. This unusual behavior has been attributed to limited electronic interactions between the d orbitals of the metal and the π-orbitals of the organic ligand on the excited-state. Accordingly, the electron richness of the donor group on the helical ligand does not affect the energy of the phosphorescence process but does play a role on its efficiency. Interestingly, near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence can be obtained for the three complexes with dissymmetry factors up to 3 × 10^-3 at 750 nm.

Enantioenriched Ruthenium-Tris-Bipyridine Complexes Bearing One Helical Bipyridine Ligand: Access to Fused Multihelicenic Systems and Chiroptical Redox Switches

The synthesis and photophysical and chiroptical properties of novel aza[n]helicenes (6a-d, 10a,b, n = 4-7) substituted with one or two 2-pyridyl groups are described. The preparation was performed via an adapted Mallory reaction using aromatic imines as precursors. The obtained novel class of helical 2,2'-bipyridine ligands was then coordinated to Ru(bipy)₂²⁺ units, thus affording the first diastereomerically and enantiomerically pure [RuL(bipy)₂]²⁺ (11a,c, L = 6a,c) or [Ru₂L'(bipy)₄]⁴⁺ (12, L' = 10b) complexes. The topology and stereochemistry of these novel metal-based helical architectures were studied in detail, notably using X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, the coordination to ruthenium(II) enabled the preparation of fused multihelical systems incorporating aza- and ruthena-helicenes within the same scaffold. The photophysical, chiroptical, and redox properties of these complexes were examined in detail, and efficient redox-triggered chiroptical switching activity was evidenced.

Twist to Boost: Circumventing Quantum Yield and Dissymmetry Factor Trade-Off in Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) enables promising applications in asymmetric photonics. However, the performances of CPL molecules do not yet meet the requirements of these applications. The shortcoming originates from the trade-off in CPL between the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and the photoluminescence dissymmetry factor (g_PL). In this study, we developed a molecular strategy to circumvent this trade-off. Our approach takes advantage of the strong propensity of [Pt(N^C^N)Cl], where the N^C^N ligand is 1-(2-oxazoline)-3-(2-pyridyl)phenylate, to form face-to-face stacks. We introduced chiral substituents, including (S)-methyl, (R)- and (S)-isopropyl, and (S)-indanyl groups, into the ligand framework. This asymmetric control induces torsional displacements that give homohelical stacks of the Pt(II) complexes. X-ray single-crystal structure analyses for the (S)-isopropyl Pt(II) complex reveal the formation of a homohelical dimer with a Pt···Pt distance of 3.48 Å, which is less than the sum of the van der Waals radii of Pt. This helical stack elicits the metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MMLCT) transition that exhibits strong chiroptical activity due to the electric transition moment making an acute angle to the magnetic transition moment. The PLQY and g_PL values of the MMLCT phosphorescence emission of the (S)-isopropyl Pt(II) complex are 0.49 and 8.4 × 10^-4, which are improved by factors of ca. 6 and 4, respectively, relative to the values of the unimolecular emission (PLQY, 0.078; g_PL, 2.4 × 10^-4). Our photophysical measurements for the systematically controlled Pt(II) complexes reveal that the CPL amplifications depend on the chiral substituent. Our investigations also indicate that excimers are not responsible for the enhanced chiroptical activity. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, organic electroluminescence devices were fabricated. The MMLCT emission devices were found to exhibit simultaneous enhancements in the external quantum efficiency (EQE, 9.7%) and the electroluminescence dissymmetry factor (g_EL, 1.2 × 10^-4) over the unimolecular emission devices (EQE, 5.8%; g_EL, 0.3 × 10^-4). These results demonstrate the usefulness of using the chiroptically active MMLCT emission for achieving an amplified CPL.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Solvent-Free Chiral Organic π-Liquids

The solvent-free organic π-liquids have been attracting increasing attentions owing to the inherent optoelectronic properties accompanied by the advantages of non-volatility and high processability. Herein, we reported a series of naphthalene derivatives substituted with chiral branched alkyl chains, which are present as liquids (Nap1-3) or solid (Nap4) at room temperature, depending on the substitution positions. Circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) were only observed for enantiomeric Nap2 (2,3-substituted) liquid. It is suggested that the chiral aggregation in the π-liquid leads to the CD signal and the chiral excimer resulting in the CPL performance. When achiral anthracene or pyrene was dissolved in Nap2, the π-liquid could serve as chirality and energy transfer media in which both CD and CPL emerged from the achiral anthracene. A CPL dissymmetry factor (|g_lum |) of anthracene reached to 5.2×10^-2 when dissolved in chiral Nap2 liquid, which is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of the pure Nap2 π-liquid.

Synthesis of azahelicenes through Mallory reaction of imine precursors: corannulene substrates provide an exception to the rule in oxidative photocyclizations of diarylethenes

Typically, the synthesis of phenanthrene-based polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons relies on the Mallory reaction. In this approach, stilbene (PhCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHPh)-based precursors undergo an oxidative photocyclization reaction to join the two adjacent aromatic rings into an extended aromatic structure. However, if one C[double bond, length as m-dash]C carbon atom is replaced by a nitrogen atom (C[double bond, length as m-dash]N), the synthesis becomes practically infeasible. Here, we show the very first examples of a successful Mallory reaction on stilbene-like imine precursors involving the molecularly curved corannulene nucleus. The isolated yields exceed 90% and the resulting single and double aza[4]helicenes exhibit adjustable high affinity for electrons.

Access to functionalized luminescent Pt(ii) complexes by photoredox-catalyzed Minisci alkylation of 6-aryl-2,2'-bipyridines

Photoredox-mediated C-H bond alkylation of 6-aryl-2,2'-bipyridines with N-(acyloxy)phthalimides is reported. The reaction exhibits excellent functional group tolerance, including chiral aliphatic groups. The influence of the incorporated C6'-alkyl group on the photophysical properties of the corresponding (N^N^C) cyclometalated Pt(ii) complexes is described, including chiroptical properties.

Experimental and theoretical studies on circularly polarized phosphorescence of a [2.2]paracyclophane-based platinum(ii) complex

An optically active binuclear platinum(ii) complex based on planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane was synthesized. The corresponding enantiomers exhibited red circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) with the dissymmetry factor |g_lum| = 1.0 × 10^-3. We report, for the first time, theoretical estimation of the CPP |g_lum| value using relativistic calculations.

Synthesis and properties of chiral fluorescent helicene-BODIPY conjugates

A series of chiral fluorescent helicene-BODIPY conjugates was prepared by the regioselective formylation of aza[4]helicene precursors and then an efficient one-pot two-step BODIPY synthesis (13 examples, 28-82%). Fused conjugates exhibit absorption and fluorescence properties (ΦF 30-45%) in the red visible domain, and a CPL signature could be measured at 605 nm (glum ±5 × 10-4). Photophysical and electronic properties were investigated and rationalized through first principles.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Nanoassemblies: Generation, Amplification, and Application

Currently, the development of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials has drawn extensive attention due to the numerous potential applications in optical data storage, displays, backlights in 3D displays, and so on. While the fabrication of CPL-active materials generally requires chiral luminescent molecules, the introduction of the "self-assembly" concept offers a new perspective in obtaining the CPL-active materials. Following this approach, various self-assembled materials, including organic-, inorganic-, and hybrid systems can be endowed with CPL properties. Benefiting from the advantages of self-assembly, not only chiral molecules, but also achiral species, as well as inorganic nanoparticles have potential to be self-assembled into chiral nanoassemblies showing CPL activity. In addition, the dissymmetry factor, an important parameter of CPL materials, can be enhanced through various pathways of self-assembly. Here, the present status and progress of self-assembled nanomaterials with CPL activity are reviewed. An overview of the key factors in regulating chiral emission materials at the supramolecular level will largely boost their application in multidisciplinary fields.

Beyond Chiral Organic (p-Block) Chromophores for Circularly Polarized Luminescence: The Success of d-Block and f-Block Chiral Complexes

Chiral molecules are essential for the development of advanced technological applications in spintronic and photonic. The best systems should produce large circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as estimated by their dissymmetry factor (g _lum), which can reach the maximum values of -2 ≤ g _lum ≤ 2 when either pure right- or left-handed polarized light is emitted after standard excitation. For matching this requirement, theoretical considerations indicate that optical transitions with large magnetic and weak electric transition dipole moments represent the holy grail of CPL. Because of their detrimental strong and allowed electric dipole transitions, popular chiral emissive organic molecules display generally moderate dissymmetry factors (10^-5 ≤ g _lum ≤ 10^-3). However, recent efforts in this field show that g _lum can be significantly enhanced when the chiral organic activators are part of chiral supramolecular assemblies or of liquid crystalline materials. At the other extreme, chiral Eu^III- and Sm^III-based complexes, which possess intra-shell parity-forbidden electric but allowed magnetic dipole transitions, have yielded the largest dissymmetry factor reported so far with g _lum ~ 1.38. Consequently, 4f-based metal complexes with strong CPL are currently the best candidates for potential technological applications. They however suffer from the need for highly pure samples and from considerable production costs. In this context, chiral earth-abundant and cheap d-block metal complexes benefit from a renewed interest according that their CPL signal can be optimized despite the larger covalency displayed by d-block cations compared with 4f-block analogs. This essay thus aims at providing a minimum overview of the theoretical aspects rationalizing circularly polarized luminescence and their exploitation for the design of chiral emissive metal complexes with strong CPL. Beyond the corroboration that f-f transitions are ideal candidates for generating large dissymmetry factors, a special attention is focused on the recent attempts to use chiral Cr^III-based complexes that reach values of g _lum up to 0.2. This could pave the way for replacing high-cost rare earths with cheap transition metals for CPL applications.

Axially Chiral Biphenyl Compound-Based Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Materials for High-Performance Circularly Polarized Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

To boost intrinsic circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties of chiral emitters, an axially chiral biphenyl unit is inlaid in thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) skeleton, urging the participation of chiral source in frontier molecular orbital distributions. A pair of enantiomers, (R)-BPPOACZ and (S)-BPPOACZ, containing the cyano as electron-withdrawing moieties and carbazole and phenoxazine as electron-donating units are synthesized and separated. The circularly polarized TADF enantiomers exhibit both high photoluminescence quantum yield of 86.10% and excellent CPL activities with maximum dissymmetry factor |g PL| values of almost 10-2 in solution and 1.8 × 10-2 in doped film, which are among the best values of previously reported small chiral organic materials. Moreover, the circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes based on the TADF enantiomers achieve the maximum external quantum efficiency of 16.6% with extremely low efficiency roll-off. Obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with |g EL| values of 4 × 10-3 are also recorded.

Rational Design of the Platinahelicene Enantiomers for Deep-Red Circularly Polarized Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

[n]Helicene derivatives are most popular chiral structures to construct luminescent materials with circularly polarized (CP) light, which have revealed appealing application in chiral optoelectronics. Particularly, because of the unique phosphorescent emission, platinahelicene has great application prospects in CP organic light-emitting diode (CP-OLED). Herein, by decorating the pyridinyl-helicene ligand with trifluoromethyl (-CF₃) unit in a specific position, a pair of platinahelicene enantiomers was prepared and separated with extremely twisted structure showing not only superior thermal and configurational stability but also good CP luminescence (CPL) property with dissymmetry factors (|g_PL|) of 6 × 10⁻³. Moreover, the evaporated CP-OLEDs based on platinahelicene enantiomers exhibited the deep-red emission with the peak at 653 nm as well as obvious CP electroluminescence (CPEL) signals with the |g_EL| in 10⁻³ order. Therefore, the design strategy provides an efficient way to improve the CPL properties of platinahelicene to cope with the future application in CP-OLEDs.

Enhanced Circularly Polarized Luminescence Activity in Chiral Platinum(II) Complexes With Bis- or Triphenylphosphine Ligands

Distinct circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity was observed in chiral (C^∧N^∧N)Pt(II) [(C^∧N^∧N) = 4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine] complexes with bis- or triphenylphosphine ligands. Compared to the pseudo-square-planar geometry of chiral (C^∧N^∧N)Pt(II) complexes with chloride, phenylacetylene (PPV) and 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide (Dmpi) ligands, the coordination configuration around the Pt(II) nucleus of chiral (C^∧N^∧N)Pt(II) complexes with bulk phosphine ligands is far more distorted. The geometry is straightforwardly confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The phosphines' participation enhanced the CPL signal of Pt(II) complexes profoundly, with the dissymmetry factor (g _lum) up to 10^-3. The distorted structures and enhanced chiroptical signals were further confirmed by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations.

Chiral Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Helicene Polymer With Efficient Red Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Chiral diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-helicene polymers were synthesized to develop efficient red circularly polarized (CP) light emitters. These original chiral dyes display intense electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and CP luminescence (CPL) in the far-red spectral region owing to the presence of excitonic coupling between achiral DPPs within the chiral environment of the polymeric structure. This work affords an interesting example illustrating the potential of π-conjugated helical polymers for chiral optoelectronic applications.

Rational Design of Axially Chiral Platinabinaphthalenes with Aggregation-Induced Emission for Red Circularly Polarized Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials have received a lot of interest due to their potential applications in next-generation displays. However, the development of easily accessible red circularly polarized phosphorescent emitters for practical organic light-emitting diodes fabrication remains a grand challenge. In this paper, we report a new family of CPL-active platinum complexes based on the binaphthalene chiral platform. These axially chiral platinabinaphthalenes were facile synthesized by directly incorporating platinum(II) into the π-conjugated backbone of a commercially available enantiopure binaphthalene derivate. These complexes exhibit aggregation-induced circularly polarized phosphorescence enhancement with high quantum yields of up to 66% and luminescence dissymmetry factors of around 2.6 × 10^-3. Moreover, solution-processable circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CPOLEDs) using these complexes as emitters show good performance with the maximum luminance of up to 3500 cd m^-2 and dissymmetry factor values of around 1.0 × 10^-3. These findings by the rational design of axially chiral platinabinaphthalenes are important for the development of high-performance CPL complexes for CPOLEDs.

Rotaxane PtII-complexes: mechanical bonding for chemically robust luminophores and stimuli responsive behaviour

We report an approach to rotaxanes in which the metal ion of a cyclometallated Pt^II luminophore is embedded in the space created by the mechanical bond. Our results show that the interlocked ligand environment stabilises a normally labile Pt^II–triazole bond against displacement by competing ligands and that the crowded environment of the mechanical bond retards oxidation of the Pt^II centre, without perturbing the photophysical properties of the complex. When an additional pyridyl binding site is included in the axle, the luminescence of the Pt^II centre is quenched, an effect that can be selectively reversed by the binding of Ag^I. Our results suggest that readily available interlocked metal-based phosphors can be designed to be stimuli responsive and have advantages as stabilised triplet harvesting dopants for device applications.

We report an approach to interlocked Pt^II luminophores in which the mechanical bond stabilises the coordination environment of the embedded metal ion.

Recent advances in circularly polarized electroluminescence based on organic light-emitting diodes

This review summarizes the recent advances in CP-OLEDs based on chiral conjugated polymers, chiral metal complexes, and chiral simple organic molecules.

Ditopic Chiral Pineno-Fused 2,2':6',2″-Terpyridine: Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Optical Properties

The syntheses of 4'-substituted chiral 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands with predetermined configurations and directionalities are rather limited in the supramolecular chemistry field. In this study, a carbazole-linked ditopic chiral ligand L was synthesized using 4'-bromo-substituted pineno-fused tpy 5 as the precursor. Upon complexation with Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O and Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, two enantiomerically pure metallosupramolecules, [Cd₃L₃] and [Zn₄L₄], have been self-assembled and characterized by NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, traveling wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry, and DOSY analysis. In addition, their optical properties are characterized by UV-vis, fluorescence, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence, suggesting an efficiency transmission and amplification of chirality from the ligand to metal center via self-assembly.
