Abstract
Chirality, one of the most fundamental properties of natural molecules, plays a significant role in biochemical reactions. Nanomaterials with chiral characteristics have superior properties, such as catalytic properties, optoelectronic properties, and photothermal properties, which have significant potential for specific applications in nanomedicine. Biomolecular modifications such as nucleic acids, peptides, proteins, and polysaccharides are sources of chirality for nanomaterials with great potential for application in addition to intrinsic chirality, artificial macromolecules, and metals. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, as opposed to other dimensions, due to proper surface area, extensive modification sites, drug loading potential, and simplicity of preparation, are prepared and utilized in diagnostic applications, drug delivery research, and tumor therapy. Current advanced studies on 2D chiral nanomaterials for biomedicine are focused on novel chiral development, structural control, and materials sustainability applications. However, despite the advances in biomedical research, chiral 2D nanomaterials still confront challenges such as the difficulty of synthesis, quality control, batch preparation, chiral stability, and chiral recognition and selectivity. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the origins, synthesis, applications, and challenges of 2D chiral nanomaterials with biomolecules as cargo and chiral modifications and highlight their potential roles in biomedicine.

Abstract
The nonchiral sensor concept based on a sodalite (SOD) zeolite loaded CuxS (CuxS@SOD) catalyst is proposed as a sensing platform for chiral cysteine (Cys) determination. Chiral Cys is analyzed by the difference of binding capacity between CuxS catalysts. The observed current in amperometric i-t curve (A i-t C) is always positive for the L-cysteine (L-Cys), while it is negative for the D-cysteine (D-Cys). Under differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method, the characteristic current peak for the CuxS@SOD moves to right (positive potential position) with the addition of L-Cys while it moves to left (negative potential direction) with the addition of D-Cys, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) is consistent with DPV and discusses the diffusion control mechanism. In this work, the ultra-trace determination of cysteine enantiomers reaches the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.70 fM and 0.60 fM by the highly efficient CuxS catalyst restrained in the nanosized SOD zeolite cages of the opening window pores, respectively. The sensor opens up a novel potential prospect for achiral composite in the field of chiral recognition through electrochemical methods with extra-low concentration.

Abstract
In order to improve the recognition performance of MIPs sensors in chiral drug enantiomers, a novel a highly selective molecular recognition method based on protein-assisted immobilization of chiral molecular conformation was developed. S-fluoxetine (S-FLX) as the target chiral molecule, human serum albumin (HSA), which has a high affinity and strong interactions with S-FLX, was screened from 11 proteins to serve as an auxiliary recognition unit for the fixation of chiral conformation. By incorporating HSA into the preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), the natural chirality and high stereoselectivity of the protein were leveraged for the induction and fixation of the stereo conformation of S-FLX, refinement of internal structures of the imprinted cavities. The sensor exhibited excellent chiral recognition ability and high detection sensitivity. The changes of probe signal intensity of the MIPs/HSA sensor were positively correlated with the logarithmic concentration of S-FLX in the range of 1.0 × 10-16-1.0 × 10-11 mol L-1, where a detection limit of 6.43 × 10-17 mol L-1 was achieved (DL = 3δb/K). The selectivity of MIPs/HSA sensor in recognizing S-FLX was increased by 18.5 times and the sensitivity was increased by 2.6 times after the incorporation of HSA. The developed sensor was successfully used for the analysis of S-FLX in fluoxetine hydrochloride capsules.

Abstract
The use of chiral modifiers is among the simplest and most popular strategies for synthesizing enantioselective voltammetric sensors that are applied for the analysis and discrimination of enantiomerical drugs in various media. The type and structure of the chiral modifier are the key factors for the creation of enantioselectivity to a specified analyte. We suggest a novel approach to the prediction of the quality of a chiral modifier for preparing highly enantioselective sensors. The suggested approach is based on the molecular mechanics modeling of the adsorption of analyte enantiomers on chiral modifiers and on the comparison of the corresponding adsorption energies (ΔEads ). The efficiency of our approach is demonstrated using the example of cyclodextrins and chiral single-wall carbon nanotubes as chiral modifiers, and a wide range of chiral analytes. We found that the experimental enantioselectivity (ϑexp ) measured using voltammetry linearly correlates with ΔEads . The suggested approach also showed good predictive power in application to enantioselective chromatography, which further validates its general applicability.

Abstract
Around 5% of the population of the world is affected with the disease called diabetes mellitus. The main medication of the diabetes is the insulin; the active form is the insulin monomer, which is an instable molecule, because the long storage time, or the high temperature, can cause the monomer insulin to adapt an alternative fold, rich in β-sheets, which is pharmaceutically inactive. The aim of this study is to form different insulin complexes with all the cyclodextrin used for pharmaceutical excipients (native cyclodextrin, methyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl and sulfobutylether substituted β-cyclodextrin), in silico condition, with the AutoDock molecular modeling program, to determine the best type of cyclodextrin or cyclodextrin derivate to form a complex with an insulin monomer, to predict the molar ratio, the conformation of the complex, and the intermolecular hydrogen bonds formed between the cyclodextrin and the insulin. From the results calculated by the AutoDock program it can be predicted that insulin can make a stable complex with 5–7 molecules of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin or sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin, and by forming a complex potentially can prevent or delay the amyloid fibrillation of the insulin and increase the stability of the molecule.

Abstract
Achieving efficient chiral discrimination by a convenient method remains a challenge in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Our aim in this paper was to develop a dual-signaling enantioselective sensing strategy based on the competitive binding assay. A combination of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and methylene blue (MB) was used as an enantioselective discrimination probe to develop a straightforward electrochemical chiral sensor using the drug naproxen (R-and S-NaX) as the representative enantiomers. The principle relied on the difference between two enantiomers in the ability to replace a pre-binding redox probe, which in turn resulted in different dual signals for the two enantiomers. The applicability of the optimized procedure was demonstrated by the analysis of NaX enantiomers in the range of 0.4-6.0 μM. Featuring both signal-on and signal-off elements, the electrode presented significantly enhanced electrochemical activity with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.07 μM. We expect that our work will inspire interesting engineering strategies for developing novel enantioselective electrochemical sensors.

Abstract
Chiral discrimination has gained much focus in supramolecular chemistry, since it is one of the fundamental processes in biological systems, enantiomeric separation and biochemical sensors. Though most of the biochemical processes can routinely recognize biological enantiomers, enantioselective identification of chiral molecules in artificial systems is currently one of the challenging topics in the field of chiral discrimination. Inaccuracy, low separation efficiency and expensive instrumentation were considered typical problems in artificial systems. Recently, chiral recognition on the interfaces has been widely used in the fields of electrochemical detection and biochemical sensing. For the moment, a series of macrocyclic host functionalized interfaces have been developed for use as chiral catalysts or for enantiomeric separation. Here, we have briefly exposited the most recent advances in the fabrication of supramolecular functionalized interfaces and their application for chiral recognition.

Abstract
It is well known that a small number of graphene nanoparticles embedded in polymers enhance the electrical conductivity; the polymer changes from being an insulator to a conductor. The graphene nanoparticles induce several quantum effects, non-covalent interactions, so the percolation threshold is accelerated. We studied five of the most widely used polymers embedded with graphene nanoparticles: polystyrene, polyethylene-terephthalate, polyether-ketone, polypropylene, and polyurethane. The polymers with aromatic rings are affected mainly by the graphene nanoparticles due to the π-π stacking, and the long-range terms of the dispersion corrections are predominant. The polymers with linear structure have a CH-π stacking, and the short-range terms of the dispersion corrections are the important ones. We used the action radius as a measuring tool to quantify the non-covalent interactions. This action radius was the main parameter used in the Monte-Carlo simulation to obtain the conductivity at room temperature (300 K). The action radius was the key tool to describe how the percolation transition works from the fundamental quantum levels and connect the microscopic study with macroscopic properties. In the Monte-Carlo simulation, it was observed that the non-covalent interactions affect the electronic transmission, inducing a higher mean-free path that promotes the efficiency in the transmission.

Abstract
Chirality has become an important research subject. The research areas associated with chirality are under substantial development. Meanwhile, graphene is a rapidly growing star material and has hard-wired into diverse disciplines. Rational combination of graphene and chirality undoubtedly creates unprecedented functional materials and may also lead to great findings. This hypothesis has been clearly justified by the sizable number of studies. Unfortunately, there has not been any previous review paper summarizing the scattered studies and advancements on this topic so far. This overview paper attempts to review the progress made in chiral materials developed from graphene and their derivatives, with the hope of providing a systemic knowledge about the construction of chiral graphenes and chiral applications thereof. Recently emerging directions, existing challenges, and future perspectives are also presented. It is hoped this paper will arouse more interest and promote further faster progress in these significant research areas.

Abstract
Supramolecular chemistry, although focused mainly on noncovalent intermolecular and intramolecular interactions, which are considerably weaker than covalent interactions, can be employed to fabricate sensors with a remarkable affinity for a target analyte. In this review the development of cyclodextrin-based electrochemical sensors is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the general properties of cyclodextrins and their ability to form inclusion complexes, the cyclodextrin-based sensors are introduced. This includes the combination of cyclodextrins with reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, conducting polymers, enzymes and aptamers, and electropolymerized cyclodextrin films. The applications of these materials as chiral recognition agents and biosensors and in the electrochemical detection of environmental contaminants, biomolecules and amino acids, drugs and flavonoids are reviewed and compared. Based on the papers reviewed, it is clear that cyclodextrins are promising molecular recognition agents in the creation of electrochemical sensors, chiral sensors, and biosensors. Moreover, they have been combined with a host of materials to enhance the detection of the target analytes. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including the development of more robust methods for the integration of cyclodextrins into the sensing unit.

Abstract
Chiral molecules, such as amino acids and carbohydrates, are the building blocks of nature. As a consequence, most natural supramolecular structures, such as enzymes and receptors, are able to distinguish among different orientations in space of functional groups, and enantiomers of chiral drugs usually have different pharmacokinetic properties and physiological effects. In this regard, the ability to recognize a single enantiomer from a racemic mixture is of paramount importance. Alternatively, the capacity to synthetize preferentially one enantiomer over another through a catalytic process can eliminate (or at least simplify) the subsequent isolation of only one enantiomer. The advent of nanotechnology has led to noteworthy improvements in many fields, from material science to nanomedicine. Similarly, nanoparticles functionalized with chiral molecules have been exploited in several fields. In this review, we report the recent advances of the use of chiral nanoparticles grouped in four major areas, i.e., enantioselective recognition, asymmetric catalysis, biosensing, and biomedicine.

Abstract
Paper-based sensors open new avenue to produce simple, rapid, inexpensive and single-use analytical devices for a wide application fields involving medical diagnosis, food analysis and environmental monitoring. In this study, a new optical sensing platform for enantioselective recognition of chiral analytes was introduced by using in-situ synthesized silver nanoparticles-embedded transparent nanopaper. To this aim, nanopaper was obtained by environment-friendly approach using bacterial cellulose made of nanofibers and silver nanoparticles were embedded within nanopaper by an in-situ generation method. The chiral recognition capability of AgNPs was operated in both solution phase and nanopaper for the tested enantiomers. AgNPs showed a discriminative sensing response toward D-cysteine with a LOD value of 4.88 µM. The principle of optical sensing is the selective interaction of the inherently chiral AgNPs with enantiomers causing to aggregation of AgNPs to display a significant colour change from yellow to purple-brown in both aqueous phase and nanopaper. As for practical use, the obtained plasmonic nanopaper was punched into circular pieces and put on wax-printed PET film to produce disposable two-dimensional cuvette which could be inserted in an ordinary spectrophotometer. The enantiomeric percentage of D-cysteine was successfully determined by the fabricated nanopaper-based cuvettes.

Abstract
A rapid monitoring platform for sensitive voltammetric detection of thiamethoxam residues is reported in the present study. A β-cyclodextrin-reduced graphene oxide composite was used as a reinforcing material in electrochemical determination of thiamethoxam. Compared with bare glassy carbon electrodes, the reduction peak currents of thiamethoxam at reduced graphene oxide/glassy carbon electrode and β-cyclodextrin-reduced graphene oxide/glassy carbon electrode were increased by 70- and 124-fold, respectively. The experimental conditions influencing voltammetric determination of thiamethoxam, such as the amount of β-cyclodextrin-reduced graphene oxide, solution pH, temperature, and accumulation time, were optimized. The reduction mechanism and binding affinity of this material is also discussed. Under optimal conditions, the reduction peak currents increased linearly between 0.5 µM and 16 µM concentration of thiamethoxam. The limit of detection was 0.27 µM on the basis of a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. When the proposed method was applied to brown rice in a recovery test, the recoveries were between 92.20% and 113.75%. The results were in good concordance with the high-performance liquid chromatography method. The proposed method therefore provides a promising and effective platform for sensitive and rapid determination of thiamethoxam. Environ Toxicol Chem 2017;36:1991-1997. © 2017 SETAC.

Abstract
In this work glucose (G), α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) are used as dispersing agents for graphene oxide (GO), exploring the influence of both saccharide units and geometric/steric hindrance on the rheological, thermal, wettability and electrochemical properties of a GO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) nanocomposite. By acting on the saccharide-based additives, we can modulate the rheological, thermal, and wettability properties of the GO/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite. Firstly, the influence of all the additives on the rheological behaviour of GO and PEDOT:PSS was investigated separately in order to understand the effect of the dispersing agent on both the components of the ternary nanocomposite, individually. Subsequently, steady shear and dynamic frequency tests were conducted on all the nanocomposite solutions, characterized by thermal, wettability and morphological analysis. Finally, the electrochemical properties of the GO/PEDOT composites with different dispersing agents for supercapacitors were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The CV results revealed that GO/PEDOT with glucose exhibited the highest specific capacitance among the systems investigated.

Abstract
Due to their size and difficulty to obtain, cost/effective biological or synthetic receptors (e.g., antibodies or aptamers, respectively), organic toxic compounds (e.g., less than 1 kDa) are generally challenging to detect using simple platforms such as biosensors. This study reports on the synthesis and characterization of a novel multifunctional composite material, magnetic silica beads/graphene quantum dots/molecularly imprinted polypyrrole (mSGP). mSGP is engineered to specifically and effectively capture and signal small molecules due to the synergy among chemical, magnetic, and optical properties combined with molecular imprinting of tributyltin (291 Da), a hazardous compound, selected as a model analyte. Magnetic and selective properties of the mSGP composite can be exploited to capture and preconcentrate the analyte onto its surface, and its photoluminescent graphene quantum dots, which are quenched upon analyte recognition, are used to interrogate the presence of the contaminant. This multifunctional material enables a rapid, simple and sensitive platform for small molecule detection, even in complex mediums such as seawater, without any sample treatment.
